~~**$$MSN Messenger- Just Above Average~~**$$
Feb 17, 2006 09:30 PM 3088 Views

Note: Review based on personal experience.....And remember before you read it, opinions, experiences do differ from P2P (Person To Person)

Hehe.. Geek Airlines has started it's services again.... :)

So, I am back to write on a software which is being used mostly by every individual(Having a Computer/Laptop) for having a chat with their friends and sharing lots of things like software’s, songs etc . Late August, in our class, the 'BHOOT' of chatting through a messenger over internet started. Everyone downloaded and tried a few messengers like MSN, Yahoo, AOL, Trillian, Zango, Google and many more!!!

What exactly it is/features???

Like some of the other clients, MSN is an internet messenger through which:

  • You can have a chat with your friends,

  • Do audio/video conversation (Webcam+Headphones required),

  • Play games, share files like songs, documents, presentations, softwares.

  • Also can send winks (Animated Files), emotions.

  • Can Record your voice and send it.

  • Block you friends,

  • View message history,

  • Create your own profile/contact card,

  • Send a nudge (Shaking of the MSN window),

  • See latest scores, news *updates, horoscopes by clicking on the tabs,

  • Set display pictures, group your contacts like- enemies, best friends,

  • Write the text in your own handwriting

(By downloading the Plug-In from microsoft.com),

  • Change your background picture

  • Whiteboard &

  • The last one: Can Check the Inbox directly.

Coming to the interface it's very good. Clean & Smart too. It’s easier than zango messenger but more complex than yahoo, Google (The simplest).

The major issues/problems:

  1. Usually during log in, the computer hangs and slows down a bit. Most of the times you need to close down MSN through Ctrl+Alt+Delete feature and then only the computer starts responding.

  2. To use the winks/nudge feature you need to download the Macromedia Flash & Shockwave Player which most of the computers don’t have.

  3. When sharing a file with an another person, the transfer speed is very low, thus it takes hours and hours. Sometimes you might have to leave the computer on overnight so that the transfer gets successfully completed. One thing more, some .zip/.rar files cannot be transfered.Coming to feature through which we can play games- the games page/windows is always unavailable.

  4. No avatars can be created like in Yahoo messenger. Also at a time more than 10 persons cannot be fitted into one conversation. This is a major let down as people wanna chat to many people at times.

  5. During an audio conversation, the voice often cuts in between making it difficult to chat. The video clarity is deteorated when doing a video conversation.

  6. If anybody installs a plug-in named 'Block/Contacts Checker', then he/she can see the view contact list of an MSN messenger user and can also see that who has blocked whom.MSN should take legal action toward the developers of the plug-in..

In other words it's a surely a 'headache'

Recommended to whom?

I recommend this software to people who have spare time and wanna go through the above difficulties. Not recommendation for 'people who are practical and do not want the features it has.'

So, finally I think that I have been able to share my views on this 'Head Eater' & 'Time Consuming'software.

Thanks for reading the review. Do Rate & Comment !!!

Bye for now,

Best Wishes,

Take Care till my next review,

yours, CoMPuTer gEEK-------Have A Nice D.A.Y.------------>™

P.S---Shortly will write a review on Trillian messenger.

Yahoo has all these things, plus the biggest advantage is,, you can leave offliners on yahoo

so I dont have to worry whether my parents are online, or their connection is not working properly or there is some problem,, I can always leave a quick offliner..

Offliners help keep the communication alive.. you can tell your friends, sorry I am out today, we wont be able to chat, or whatever else you want to leave a message on. Its so very userfriendly.

And yahoo has stealth settings/ online presence. If you want to be offline to one particular uncle or a nagging aunty or a very avoidable friend, you can mark offline against him or her, and yet continue chatting with other friends or with parents.

And the greatest set back for msn users is, if you want to chat with the someone, you have to come online and be online. you cant stay invisible and chat... so that the entire panel of 30 something people on your messenger list knows that you are online. And if each one of them wastes your time - even five minutes a piece - you will make an on the spot resolution of never coming online again in MSN...

Yahoo is much cooler. Much more Userfriendly. And photosharing, webcam, mike, call a computer, voice conference, emoticons, pakau audibles, and innumberable others make it the bestest... There is no doubt about it....

Most Elegant Messenger

So, you got your fiance(e) to whom you'll get married soon or later, but are far apart or do not meet regularly. Don't waste money and your ears on Cell Phone calls! Instead use Instant Messenger.

Anyone would recommend to use Yahoo! But in this case, as well when you are good friends, siblings, ancestors/decedents, colleagues or any relationship which is definite - I would recommend MSN Messenger!

Might be only my view, but MSN Messenger is excellent Instant Messenger for clean and clear chatting with no creepy fonts and styles, non-sense IMVironments, ludicrous icons and other crappy objects on screen! You are not adding, accepting/denying friends on daily basis - if so, use Yahoo! Messenger.

I've experienced long and really good chats with friends on MSN without any problems. I feel gracious chatting on MSN for long time, with crystal clear sound and good quality display resolution of webcam display - Yahoo! is sick in these cases!

Other than elegant chatting experience, I would list out some good attributes:

1 }} Single mode Alert Window that comes on bottom-right, whenever you receive new mail, new contact online, receive some chat-message/nudge/invitation from online member (with chat window NOT opened). This looks really nice. If there are more than one activities (same or different type of), MSN arranges more windows on top of current Alert Window.

2 }} The complete design of this Messenger is simply astounding - very clear and refined. The menus and toolbars are so designed for long time professional / personal chatting. Even with different versions, menus and toolbar items are arranged consistency. (Yahoo! lovers: there are many features which are not consistent in YM! )

3 }} File Sharing, Remote Assistance, Application Sharing, Whiteboard are the features which are very useful at times and available only in MSN Messenger, as per my knowledge.

4 }} You can login with either Hotmail or MSN account. Unlike Yahoo! Messenger, this won't allow you to chat with non-online user or user which is not in your list (If you need to initiate the chat, otherwise you can chat if ''ADD REQUEST'' was send by him/her and you agree but not added; and he/she has initiated chat for now).

5 }} NO OFFLINE MESSANGING: This would be considered as major drawback from Yahoo! lovers. But, see from clear - consistent - elegant chatting point of view -- it is made like this!

6 }} Though YM has IMvironments, MSN too has Background sharing and Dynamic Background sharing. Again, this add your experience to elegance messaging. No disgusting unknown backgrounds, no ads, no buzz sound change - everything is neat. Also you can apply other background image or download dynamic BG.

7 }} Native Emoticons are neat and clean but does not expresses mood perfectly ( have you seen 'smile' or 'cry' icon? ). Here you can also define your own emoticons as well as their shortcuts - thousands of good icons are available to download.

8 }} Unread Email count is ALWAYS PERFECT! No matter how many Hotmail pages you open to read your Hotmail/MSN emails and read them in random order - MSN displays them accurately. (Please not that this does not apply while using MS Outlook or Outlook Express - since these email client applications send request/response to email servers on timely basis and not instantly when you 'read' emails.)

9 }} MSN Messenger displays the photos of your contacts when they are online or logged in (in Alert Window). It is not available in Yahoo!

10 }} Handwriting canvas allows you to express yourself more optimistically! Provided you are your online contact have compatible MSN Messenger to send/receive handwritten message.

11 }} Latest MSN Messenger (7.5) allows you to record and send small voice clip of yourself. This is useful when you cannot initiate voice conversation. You can (either of members) also save that recorded clip you've just send/received!!

12 }} Featured Packs, Winks, Nudge, Inline Search, Emailing, Blocking et. al. are features I need not mention....

Messenging Messenger Part - 1 UPDATED 11/6/2005

A N U J says:

So how are things going?

Mai aisa kyon hoon says:

Everything is fine, whats up with the gang?

A N U J says:

Everybody is busy yaar. Himanshu, can you wait for 10 minutes? I will be right back

Mai aisa kyon hoon says:

Ok

(10 minutes later)

A N U J says:

Hey, I am back

----------------------------------------------------------------

The following messages could not be delivered:

Hey, I am back

Damn! I yell to myself. Why can’t the messenger show a prompt that Himanshu has logged out? And why can’t the message be delivered as offline? MSN sucks! <<I pack my fist into a punch only to realize that it is no use>>

The above few lines are the actual transcripts of my conversation with my school friend Himanshu Sharma who now lives in Hyderabad. It was one fine evening that I caught up with him after a really long time on MSN and started off this chat. And off late, most of my conversations on MSN end up the way this one did.

I was welcomed to the world of MSN Messenger long time ago. I guess it was around late 1999 that I had first downloaded it to chat with my brother who at that time was in the Middle East. At that time, MSN was only a messenger, just as any simple instant messaging software should be. It did not have any fundoo features and stuff. Rather, it was just simple software, using which we could logon to the messaging server, and start chatting with any online contact. There was no big deal in it. It was due to the simplicity of MSN that it slowly but steadily gained popularity among the young junta of the world.

So who said that Yahoo! will remain behind them? They too updated their messaging software and pretty soon the competition between Yahoo and MSN became hotter than the Delhi summer! MSN is (in?)famous for all the spam that we complain about on MouthShut today. The same thing happened with me and I shifted my loyalties to Yahoo very quickly. But then recently I again downloaded MSN (version 7). And folks, I am regretting it big time. Darn MSN, darn chat client. Let me tell you about my experience with MSN.

I was fairly happy with my MSN 6.2 when all of a sudden some of my friends urged me to upgrade it to MSN 7, which (according to them) has new fundoo features. So I patiently waited to download the 7MB setup file on my dreadfully slow dial-up connection. Now what? I configure the messenger on my computer and restart it (my usual practice after every software installation). I logon to Internet and open MSN. Then I wait patiently as it takes more than a few moments to open up. Darn… too slow (I think). Okay, now what? I sign-in to my account. I notice at least 10 new tabs coming up even as it indicates 5 new messages in my inbox. Before I could say darn again, the messenger crashes. Welcome to the world of crash landings! (Whatever that means) (I think again). I restart the messenger, sign in again, and thankfully, it doesn’t crash again. Phew! And the journey has only just begun! (I think to myself).

Now what? I find a friend online and I start chatting with her.

A N U J says:

Hi Sneha! ((Readers please note, I am not talking about Sneha the star writer))

At the bottom of the window, I see:

Princess Sneha is typing a message

Suddenly, Crash! Boom! Bang! The messenger goes Ooh! Aah! Ouch! Once again!

Tired of the messenger for the day, I shut it down, vowing to uninstall it the next morning. But then the curios Anuj decides not to do so. Keeping my fingers crossed, I sign in to MSN again, yikes! Nobody is online! And no email notification either! But I know that I have some unread messages in my mailbox. So I instinctively click on the inbox option and finally reach there, only to find that the 14 unread messages are in another folder, thanks to Custom Filters.

Lessons learnt till now:

# No offline messages. Great turn off if you are a Yahoo fan.

# Don’t rely on your MSN Messenger if you have filters activated in your mailbox, because it doesn’t show unread messages from other folders.

# MSN won’t indicate you whenever a contact goes offline. So keep the messenger window open if you have to look at their status.

# The downside of keeping the window open is that the bottom ad-bar will keep on updating it’s ads, thus slowing down the speed that you can use for other downloads.

So I finally get to chat with Sneha again. When she doesn’t seem to reply to my message, I send a nudge. Wait! Isn’t it the same as a buzz in Yahoo? (I think to myself). Only, the buzz is louder than a nudge.

I found two of my school chums online. I invite them into a chat. Ahem! Isn’t it the same as Yahoo’s Conference? I am going nuts (I think again)

Hardcore Yahoo addicts will find it difficult to switch to MSN. Why? Simple. It is because MSN has an entirely different range of emoticons (erm… smileys in Yahoo slang). So if a :(( can make a crying face in Yahoo, the same will be made by a :’( in MSN. Darn, too complicated! (Why do I think so much?)

Did you hear MSN radio? I have tried it once. Liked it. But then I also liked Yahoo’s LaunchCast. So whats the difference? Maybe that MSN radio works in a browser window (or maybe I have configured my messenger to open radio in a browser, or maybe I haven’t checked, apologies about it).

Background: similar to Yahoo IMvironments. Winks: similar to Yahoo’s audibles. So whats new in MSN? Keep trying, keep trying. Think about it. Ultimately you will realize that MSN and Yahoo are both the same side of a coin.

While chatting with a friend recently, I noticed him sending me winks. I decided to send him a wink too, but lo and behold, the winks wont work. Apparently, it worked on my screen, but didn't get to him. I checked all settings, but nothing worked. Darned MSN

Coming soon – a review on the new Yahoo Messenger 7 (beta). Eagerly wait for it, Ab to mai uska bhi band bajaa doonga!

MSN7 - Nudged out of competition
May 26, 2005 09:25 PM 2274 Views

After ignoring a million ads for the latest version and coolest emoticons on their site, I finally gave in and just installed the darned thing. I have been loyal to MSN and Yahoo for the longest time(since 97). So although my expectations were nil (I will still use it anyway, because of contacts!), I have to say this messenger really is in-your-face and I have only 1 word - PATHETIC!

What's new with version 7

Well, not much. I was hoping there would be some way to get rid of that annoying banner at the bottom of the main messenger window, but alas, it still remains.

Here's what is really new

  • New Emoticons. Customizable options to add new emoticons

  • Flash enabled ''Winks'' - a new way to express ur sentiments.

  • A ''nudge'' feature to force ur contacts to respond

  • Handwriting feature that can be used to doodle using ur mouse.

  • Some more cosmetic changes to the look of the messenger

Features review

I am going to try to keep this as unbiased as possible. For very obvious reasons, I am going to compare it on par with yahoo messenger.

Emoticons

Nothing new about them. Same feature as the old one. They do have a couple of new ones, (like one for brb). Nothing eye-popping. Just like the older versions, you have the option to create ur own.

Winks

Well, this closely emulates the audibles on yahoo. The annoying feature of this is that the winks are pop-ups and do not display in the messenger window. If you want to be a discreet user at work, trying to sneak in messages to your friends, then ignore the winks. Even muted, they are easily visible. (This is also the same annoying pop-ups on msn web page that doesn't allow you to browse unless u close it out and then the hyper-links stop working!!)

Nudge

Ha! A yahoo buzz without the sound is all this is!!!!! Need I say more??

Handwrite feature

Well, I was really looking forward to use this as I thought this would be interesting. But when I clicked on it, I was prompted to install some Journal software. I went ahead to do that. Then MS site prompted for Windows XP validation. ''All-right'' I said, thinking it should be a breeze since I have a valid copy. Unfortunately, that isn't the end. I had to download another file onto my pc to get a validation key and then continue on the site for more validation, which I did and then what do you know, I was told I could not continue as my browser was incompatible and had to either use IE or download and open another file, which is when I gave up and shut the whole thing off.

Overall review

The two stars I have given is not for the bells and whistles but for what msn used to be earlier....just a simple messenger which didn't annoy you and had all the needed features and nothing more.

Despite all this I will still continue to use it, for the sole reason that I have to talk to my contacts.

MSN Messenger, what a great invention. by those very hard workers at MSN, this has got to be the fastest most powerful live FREE messenging service there is around. With MSN Messenger you can Talk online, in real time, with friends, family, and colleagues. It?s faster than e-mail, extremely private and gives the user maximum benefits whilst they chat away with whoever.

One of the best features of Messenger is the webcam feature, which allows 2 people to be in a conversation and both be watching each others webcam footage. Which is brilliant when talking to friends and family. But also alongside the webcam function there is an option to be able to have micropones enabled, so that if you have one you can speak to the other person in voice rather than plain text. BRILLIANT! This is a great feature if you need to get a point across quickly and effectively, because sometimes, when you're writing a very important message to somebody, they may miss understand your context and become upset.

So a great addition to Messenger. So what else can Messenger do. Well at the moment ive got around 130 contacts on my messenger list, and the good thing about messenger is that you can talk to as many people as you want at the same time, you can even invite a group of people into the same conversation and have a group discussion, or a general laugh with your mates. Its upto you, with MSN messenger, the world is your oyster.

Also with messenger, it is easy to logon, just type your email address and password, press sign in and bang your in! once your logged into messenger, you will get a list of all your contacts, and whether or not they are online, green person next to the email adress, means online, red means offline. simple! and its ultimatley easy to chat to a person that is online, just double click their screen name, on the messenger screen and a conversation window will pop up, and away you go.

A very good feature of Messenger which has helped me with keeping on track with my e-mail is the built in email tracker which will keep an eye on your hotmail inbox and notify you if you have any new email messages. And it will tell you how many. If a contact who you urgently needed to talk to was offline, you can easily email them from the messenger window, just right click their screen name, select send email, and bunf, up comes the website with the contacts email address inserted and ready for you to write your email.

One of my favourite glories about msn messenger is the smileys and customisable images you can insert into conversations to liven up and excite the convos. With these small sized images you can say a lot about how you are feeling, what youve been doing, where you have been, where you are going, and many other's. Its agreat way of getting your point across as fast as possible.

So onto the layout of messenger, well when you open up messenger from your desktop when you are offline, the messenger window is basic with limited functions, but once you sign into messenger, theres a whole new idea. As soon as you login, a little box may come up at the botom right of your screen stating if youve got any new emails.

An MSN today page will appear on your screen which gives you the latest news and events happening around the world at your fingertips. You've got the whole list of online or offline contacts. Various different options on the left hand side of the window in a column, ranging from online games to dating agencies to online gambling, honestly everything you would ever need is at your fingertips. There's even a direct search function in that column which links up with google, give it a click and it opens up, (in messenger the site and the search bar immediatley to type in what you would like to see) Simple as!!

At the top of the messenger window there are various different self explanitory options, but the one users co-operate with most of all is the tools drop down menu, as this menu has features which can change the appearence of your messenger window, with the menu, you can, create emotions, change emotions, create backgrounds for your converstation windows, setup a mobile phone number so that people can contact you whilst you are away or offline.

An options menu where you can change various settings, like your screen name which is visible to everyone you have a convo with., the options menu also allows you to setup a virus scanner, which scans any incoming files your contacts may send you for viruses and unwanted acitivity. To protect your own online business, you can select which contacts you wish to co-operate with, and which you don't with a very clever tool which blocks contacts getting on your tits (nerves I should say hehe!) Also gives you an option of connection type, incase you connect via a proxy and need to configure it to be in use with MSN messenger.

Its just got so many features, it has got to be the most efficient FREE messeging client in the world. I love it and im sure so do the other 500 million odd users who have it installed on their machines. Hope you enjoyed this review. I enjoyed writing it.

Thanks for reading

My troubles have begun ever since I have started using MSN messenger. Now you may be wondering why I start the review with such a negative remark when I actually recommend the Messenger to one and all! That is because my troubles were not caused by the messenger itself but because of my obsession with this product!! I can say for a fact that I am truly to addicted to it and would Never even dream to leave it!!!!

Lets start with why I love Msn Messenger so dearly!

  1. Its a quick and easy way to communicate with people sitting Saath samunder paar from you. With the Voice Chat, I feel as if i'm talking on the phone with someone who lives on the other end of the world! Expect, you needn't scream at the top of your voice as if you're attending a trunk call!! The Webcam feature further makes you feel like you're sitting opposite the person you're chatting with, even if that person is sitting in the middle of a tropical forest!!( not that tropical forests have internet connections!!) Its Very convinient!!

  2. One thing I love about chatting on Msn is that I can really express myself without having to show the other person the expressions on my face; the Animated emotions do that job for me!! They're simply brilliant and capture most genuine human emotions! So, now when I have to roll my eyes up at a senseless joke of my friend, all I have to do is click!

  3. The File Sharing allows members to exchange information or pictures. I think this is the most recent way by which friends can share their notes with each other!! There's no hassle of trying to borrow a typed document, all you need to do is, send it through Msn! Soooo many times, my friends and have corrected each other's work by this feature! Mind u, corrected not copied ;) lol!

  4. The latest version that I have (Msn 6.2) has the possiblity of playing a game with ur friends online. There's a Fun and Games feature which allows members to enjoy an online came together. Actually, this feature is very depressing for me...I never win any game!!!! boohoo! But its great fun challenging your friends to a quick game!

  5. You can do Online Conferencing! So many times my friends and I have made all our plans for an outing on Msn. Saved us soooo much time that we'd have wasted sending SMS messages to everyone!! Plus my friends are equally vellas and lookhas like me, so conferencing really suits us!! Plus I think its fun to chat with so many of ur friends at once! The only thing I would warn you against, is the addiction that Msn messenger can be! My dad nearly pulled out his hair when for the millionth time in a day he saw me chatting!!! There have been so many times when I avoided watching my favourite TV shows just to finish a game online with my friends! So, beware!!

Now, don't forget to leave a comment! Ur feedback really helps me in improving my writing. Even a few words would do!!! :)

Let'z Chat MSN...
Sep 05, 2003 05:50 PM 2638 Views

Msn IM is a great chat client. With it, u can have text, voice & video chat/conference with other people online. U can chat with each person, privately/personally in separate chat windows or chat with 2 or more people together in 1 common conference box (chat window). U can even send & receive files & contacts.

U can manage ur contact list(s) as groups or as online/offline. U can even send & receive messages on cell-phones (this service should be available with ur operator & is available in some countries only). U can customize Msn IM according to ur likes.

U can download the messenger software from https://msn.com. For logging in for chat (Sign IN), u need to have a Hotmail.com or MSN.com or .NET Passport account.

Now some info for all u people who are still upset with Msn IM regarding JUNK MAILS & SPAM.

Well, its not the fault of the Instant Messenger.....

U receive junk mails due to the settings/configuration of ur email accounts/id’s. While signing up for an Hotmail email account, 1 must fill out a profile info form (registration). On that very same page, at the bottom, there are some options with their respective check-boxs.

Options like: Share My email address, Share my first & last names, Share my other info, etc with Hotmail's participating/sponsor sites, List me in the Member's Directory, etc. Just make sure u have not checked in, any of these check-boxes (Just leave them unchecked). Incase, u have checked in any or all of these check-boxes, then my friend, u will be 1 of those lucky persons to receive JUNK MAIL (Spam).

Reason: If ur name/email is listed in the members directory, then any company/organisation/person can take ur email address and/or any other info available & send u emails relating to their products/services. And if u allow the partner sites of Hotmail.com to contact u, then u’r gonna receive emails with product info/offers, etc. (Junk).

As for SPAM, u can control spam with the help of the BULK/JUNK MAIL (Spam Filter) option. Just activate the Bulk/Junk Mail option & u won't receive spam (The general performance of the spam filters is around 40%. The 100% performance, mostly 80%. of the spam filters is only available when u have purchased a Hotmail account with some extra storage/capacity & some extra features, as compared to the free version that people mostly use).

As about HACKING or CRACKING Hotmail accounts.......

A hack is mostly not possible coz the Hotmail servers are well protected. Cracking too, is not possible. Hotmail.com always keeps updating the security on all its servers & websites.

Incase u have 2 or more Hotmail accounts & would like to log in to them, all at the same time, there is a software available on the P2P file sharing networks (Kazaa, iMesh, BareShare, etc.) called, 'multiple accounts in same time'. I dont remember the file name exactly, but u can try the name I've mentioned or any similar. The program works with all MSN IM versions. (I'm not exactly sure if it works with version 6.0 or later, coz I haven't tried with them).

MSN Messenger 6.0
Aug 15, 2003 09:24 PM 5931 Views

I was there when MSN 6.0 was shuffled for beta testing.Me and one of my friend from Microsft messanger team was having fun of chatting with Beta version after 2 week they launched the site with full promotios.

Since I am a microsoft fan even though they had to give up $6million recently,I strongly belived that PC is easily approachable to human being because of Bill.

MSN is having lot of features like background, emotions, change the display name and most important make you offline and still received the email.

Some eature they are missing is invisible, sometimes people want to invisible and chat only with those whom they want to.I hope MS is working on this and you will get that in very soon.

Second feature what people really wanted to use the diplay pictures for different people fro eg When A is talking to B he wants to show pic xx and to C pic yy,it would be fun for those who has one girl friend and trying to get a new one with a cool pic..just kidding

Also you can download and images from different web site and add on the back ground, emotions, dispaly.

Overall its recommended to use MSN messaneger.

MSN The Best To Use
Jul 19, 2003 05:30 PM 2414 Views

I have been on so many chats lately to find out what is the best to use without pop-ups.

Yahoo is bad for pop-ups and AOL.

I explored more with MSN.

I bought a web cam by Labtec and I use now for chatting the video connection in good.

You see the person you talk to the person sees you , but, you see your contact in large, your contact sees you large

while you are in a small box, good idea.

The chat are in different categories age groups as the rest

of the chats.

Less pop-ups, the chat rooms are kept clean from foul language.

They are friendly to you.

I would recommend MSN all of many ages.

I have MSN messenger not the subscription.

Mess With The MESSenger

I am reviewing the Msn Messenger 6.0 Beta versions

What is MSN Messenger?

Well, most of you know that MSN Messenger is a chat program that allows users to interact with each other. There are many other messenger programs available such as Yahoo, ICQ and AOL. However, MSN Messenger is one the popular chat programs used all around the world.

But isn’t Chat the same?

To be honest chat and MSN Messenger are two different things. In Chat referring to MSN Chat a user is in a room full of people that a user may have no clue about, unless they are friends. When you type a messege you are actually sending the messege to all those people in a chat room. Also, chat doesn’t let you know when the person is typing a messege and the user can sit there waiting for a response. The bad thing is you get all these private messeges from people asking about your ASL (age, sex and location). Apart from that Chat is an applet meaning you have to wait ages and ages for it to load. In addition the emotions (smiley faces) are also limited.

MSN Messenger and other messengers allow you to add people onto your list at your own choice and invite friends if you want to. So in other words you have private conversations.

The New Features…

The good thing about MSN Messenger is that it is updated after a few months and the team is always working on new features that can be added. Most of you will have the old version of MSN Messenger but these are the features for the new one:

Animated Emotions

You might be thinking what’s new about that Yahoo already has that. Well that is true, but MSN Messenger has cute smiley faces that are guaranteed to make you smile. They sneeze, cry, wink and even party. They are just perfect to express yourself.

The Display Picture

Have you always been asked what do you look like? Are you scared to put your photo up on your MSN profile? Not to worry the new display picture allows you to put photos up of anyone you want on your Messenger window. So whoever also has MSN Messenger 6.0 on your list can see you!

The Web Cam Ability

Now you can chat to your friends on MSN Messenger face to face with your web cam. If your friend is saying they don’t have a web cam then you can prove them wrong because a small emotion of a web camera will appear by the email of your friend.

The Backgrounds

Now you can spice up the look of the boring MSN Messenger Chat Window by adding a background. You can also choose a range of backgrounds supplied or add your own personal one.

Create Your Own Emotions

Always wanted to show your friends the smiley face you created? Well now you have the chance. After creating your emotion in a paint program you can upload it and express yourself!

Picture Previewing

When someone on your list wants to send you a photograph of something, you may wonder what it is. Well to cut the suspense MSN have introduced preview picture before accepting so you know what your friends are sending.

What’s The Same?

MSN Messenger has kept the basic buttons like block, send a voice messege, pop ups, view profile etc… So basically nothing has been removed.

The Downside…

Well we all know that viruses, Trojans and hacks are always around when chatting. Unfortunately, this is also a threat when you add people you don’t know so it is important you don’t add strangers that you can trust.

Is This New Version Good Enough For Me?

Well, I have listed some of the good things but of course the list was long and keep in mind this MSN Messenger is the preview version so not everything is available yet. SO if this sounds good to you then try it out for youself!

My opinion:

I think MSN have done a great job, normally they just update the look but this time they have also added new features that are brilliant, making chatting more bright! But they should concentrate next on preventing viruses and maybe adding anti-virus software to the download setup file.

The Basic Messenger
Feb 28, 2003 09:59 PM 3203 Views

The MSN Messenger is incontrovertibly one of the best options available in the satanic lairs of Instant Messaging. Au contraire, there are quite a few things to prove its not so wonderful facets.

Why go for it?

  1. The Looks:

Looks of a software, you ask? After all, its not of George Clooney I speak, I only speak of a modest software. I like you question Sir, so I shall proceed to answer it.

The looks of this particular chatting heaven can be best summed up as – neat. Neat, clean, and spotless. Easy on eyes and brains. Definitely not like its floral counterparts (ICQ, if I may suggest) which are clogged with too many worthless options on the main layout itself. MSN only has the bare minimum functions in your face – serene, clean and… (damn, I ran out of rhyming words). Compact as it maybe, it also blesses you well by adapting blissfully to your windows colors – so whether you have a gory red horror movie theme, or a chirpy nature scene, your MSN will adapt to it well. If only human beings were so adjusting… sigh.

  1. Connectivity:

MSN gets good points, although not full for its connectivity. It connects with pretty decent time, and pops up your 185 messages in inbox as soon as it is connected. Also, it not only accepts your hotmail account for chatting, it also lets you use your customized e-mails via passport membership. So that’s one thing that deserves a round of applause. Oh sit down, I didn’t ask for a standing ovation!

  1. Good Features:

Its easy to change your nickname – which is not in the case of the Shammi Kapoor counterpart (Yahoo! – duh!) and you can also add smilies with your nickname. Reminds me of someone who didn’t have a nickname, only random smilies… yea, you got it – ‘twas a girl! I like the block feature – the good ol’ block feature. Blocks your boyfriend when you’re cheating on him (just an idea, I don’t do that, alright!?), blocks your netpal who keeps asking for your phone no. and blocks everyone else for no special reason. Also the standard modes – online, away, out for lunch… etc. I think MSN also supports SMS, although it doesn’t work here in India. It also has a neat voice conference option. Worth mentioning is the fast file transfer speed.

So when you go basic – MSN rules the show, but the question is – how basic are you willing to get?

Why reconsider?

  1. Advertisements:

And you thought you had escaped the devil, eh? Well, how do you expect these people to earn a living, eh? So MSN is accompanied with banners – not popups, but otherwise clogging the main interface. Advertising on MSN ends here, thank God which cannot be said of similar options.

  1. Going Basic:

Like I said, when its basic, MSN is good. But perhaps a few additions could not hurt. MSN is way simple. Barely any font color options, big smilies (should reduce their size) and lacks upgradations on the looks. Also when someone is blocked, you don’t get a notification when they come online – can be considered both a pro and a con.

  1. No Records:

Of course, it doesn’t have a history option or logs of your chats. Again, might be a pro or a con, who wants to store a chat where you spend three hours just to decide what dress to wear at a party? But what if you got this very juicy gossip with loads of details, and accidently your chat windows shuts down – hurts just to think about it, doesn’t it?

So that’s that, MSN for you. I would highly recommend this software to people who don’t have time to waste because it is fast and efficient – no doubt. The few things it lacks are not very major drawbacks. Nobody’s perfect they say? I say, nothing is either!

Butterfly always keeps me in touch
Feb 24, 2003 03:07 PM 5706 Views

Hello all, I am back after so many days. I think I am coming back again and again after each and every of my reviews. I am trying to keep my self touch with MouthShut.com but I am not able to, because of very tight schedule, and lots of work and studies are also there. Anyways first of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR, HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY and HAPPY VALENTINE DAY to all MouthShut.com Members and Staff.

I wanted to write a review on MouthShut.com since a long time, like every week I start writing review, and I get ends up with the blank page. But this time I have decided to write review any how. So this review is on MSN Messenger which is also known as Microsoft Network Messenger. I don’t want to go in to it’s history or it’s starting I will just review the current version of the MSN Messenger.

NOTE: There are two different messengers, which are using the same network of MSN, 1 – MSN Messenger and 2 – Windows Messenger, in this review I am talking about MSN Messenger 5. This review is containing some technical terms like Internal IP, External IP and other terms, if any one wants to know what are this terms, free feel to M2M me. And one more thing, I am not comparing MSN Messenger with any other messenger, its simply the review on MSN Messenger Software.

Now let’s move to the review and talk something about MSN Messenger.

I liked the starting screen of MSN Messenger a lot, its clean and very attractive and also cute, the Sign In button and that Welcome msn logo I liked, and the butterfly which is flying over the msn is also very cute. But one thing I am missing is that, suppose that me and my brother is using this MSN Messenger and if we both store our username and password in MSN Messenger, then if I login and then my brother wants to login then he needs to type username and password, but if I again wants to login then I don’t need to type username and password again, by clicking on Sign In button I can login, so I miss this thing in it, it should be like this, if I have stored my username and password then it creates my Sign In button there, and if my brother stores his username and password then it should also create my brother’s Sign In button too, but this feature is not there.

Main screen is quite impressive and also having lots of things to do, I liked the new feature in MSN Messenger of those tabs which are placed on the left side of the MSN Messenger. MSN Alert is also very nice thing, which keeps me alerting about what is today and like that.

MSN Messenger gets interact with all the web sites which supports Microsoft Passport. User just needs to click on sign in button on the web site, and that web site, then taking information from the MSN Messenger and let the user login without entering any username or password. It’s also integrated with Hotmail, so if you receive any e-mail user gets notification about that.

MSN Messenger is also having Voice Chat, File Transfer and Web Cam function. Which are really very cool and useful. I have tried all these three functions in dial-up account, because in cable internet I don’t have external IP and MSN Messenger is not supporting this thing, so I am not able to do Voice Chat, File Transfer and Web Cam thing in my Cable Internet having Internal IP, but if you have external IP then you can. This is the thing which I don’t like in MSN Messenger, it doesn’t allow Passive Mode users to use this type of functions. Well, but in cable internet I am able to receive files but I can’t transfer files. On dial-up these three works perfectly, voice chat is very clear and when u first time use it, you need to do it’s setup, which is very easy and provides information on each and every step. Web cam is also very easy too use. File transfer thing is also very easy and you also get that how many KB(s) are still left to receive or transfer, and which is real time stat.

Emoticons of MSN Messenger are cute and very useful. Conversation window where two or more users can chat is very friendly, and provides all handy tools at one click, like Voice Chat, Web Cam, File Transfer and similar functions. If you have Windows XP Professional installed on your computer, then you get some more functions like Ask for Remote Assistance, and other things. There are lots of things which users needs to keep in touch with. I heard that in next version of Windows Messenger, they are going to remove Make a Phone Call feature but it will stay in MSN Messenger, Make a Phone Call feature allows users to call any one in any country by charging nominal fee which is integrated with iConnectHere.com.

There are few things which I hate sometimes and I also love them sometimes, one of them is Screen Name, you can change Screen Name of yours to what you like, but this things creates confusions sometimes, because people changes their Screen Name to such a you can not recognize them, and you have to click on their name, and you need to check their e-mail and it’s not possible to remember each and everyone’s e-mail address at least for me, so it creates prob, sometimes for me, but on other hand its very nice. The one thing I like is Status and I also don’t like, coz Status Messages are not customizable, only selected Status Messages are there.

MSN Messenger, manages your contacts in two ways, Online/Offline or Group wise. And also you can save your contact list, and if you have created new MSN ID then you can import that contact list.

MSN Messenger is also having direct link to MSN Chat, so no need to open Browser and write whole URL.

MSN Messenger provides great support to the programmers, like if any programmer wants to add MSN Messenger’s contact list in the application which he/she is working on then there are some APIs which programmer can use and can load whole list of offline and online users in the application which he/she is working on. Like this there are lots of features for programmers.

I miss one feature in the MSN Messenger is that, if you change your font size then your whole font size changes, I mean by it also changes the font size of the user to whom you are talking to, which I don’t like, because there is my friend he keeps other font which needs to have a greater font size to read, so if I keep font size greater, then my fonts are looking bigger and dirty. So this thing bugs me sometimes.

I hope you all like my new style of writing review, and also you like this review, please rate it and also leave your valuable comments.

Yahoo to YAhoo!
Jan 31, 2003 07:01 PM 4040 Views

This review would be more of MSN Vs Yahoo! rather than a review of just MSN messenger. Thats because most of us internet users have both these messengers downloaded to keep in touch with our friends who are divided between hotmail and yahoo accounts.

Still, if I were given a preference , I would use Yahoo, for its great features-THESE ARE NOT AVAILABLE ON MSN-

One main advantage of Yahoo! that msn doesnt provide is OFFLINE MESSAGING! It is so important and makes life easier when u and ur friend are not online at the same time, its like being able to access friends all 24 hours, and u can be sure they receive ur messages even if u sent them when they were not online !

The second feature is BUZZ- the most irritating yet most timepass feature, u can really shake n wake up ur friend who is miiiiiiiiiilez away!

The third feature is the IMvironments-makes chatting more colorful and fun!

Fourthly, the wide range of smilies, almost every emotion you can express and now with the animated emoticons-like a PUNCH ON THE FACE, WHISTLING, THE DANCING SMILEY, THE SMILEY THAT SAYS-LIAR LIAR- wow, what more can one ask for !!!

Fifth, one can send messages to all friends in one group at one time, its like GROUP SMS ....so convenient when u want to send one message to a whole group of friends, I used it yesterday to announce my insurance exams marks to all my friends at my previous workplace!!

Sixth, this is a pretty useful feature, being able to communicate in the invisible mode.IN MSN IF U GO IN THE OFFLINE MODE , YOU CANT SEND AND RECEIVE MESSAGES.

seven, message archives maintained for a whole week.

Eight, u can keep recalling recent history in your current chat window.

May be there are more features that I have missed out, but all these make Yahoo a much much better instant messaging service than MSN.

Yahoo!!!!!!!!! to all my mouthshut friends!

YAHOOOoooo!!! is much more cooler!!!!
Dec 14, 2002 10:10 AM 12714 Views

Before I start the review…This review is dedicated to all whom I talk to from Mouthshut.com on Msn messenger (Especially my Best Friend from Ms.com)

Let’s see where to begin:

Well I rarely use Msn personally, I have most of the same ppl on yahoo…so what’s the use..but forget about that…lets talk about Msn messenger in general.

I just upgraded it..but didn’t find anything different. SO don’t know what was the use of that…

Msn messenger looks kind of techno (my word so can’t really explain it) meanin…it looks much better then yahoo.

Emotions on Msn messenger are alright…I like the rose and hearts and that coffee cup…and of course there are some hidden ones too. But I don’t know them.

There are no Environment (backgrounds) like on Yahoo… There is no Buzz…

Hmm…what else?

Oh yeah, there is also the Voice chat.

I tried doing this on Msn but didn’t work..so I don’t know if its my comp…or just msn. Since it works on Yahoo.

So you get the point that I don’t like Msn better then Yahoo…But there is one thing that I like the Most is that…I can change my id with anything that I want and actually add emotions… My recent thing is DesiGal with a wink…

Hehehhe

Appear Offline a.k.a Invisible Mode

Unlike on Yahoo…you can’t chat with anybody nor can you do anything – you can just see who is online or not.

File transfer – sending a file to ur buddy is easy and mostly fast too.

hmmm…. (thinking)

There aren’t any cool tools on Msn like on Yahoo</bi>

Well…that’s about it from me!

P.s: If you are interested in knowing my Msn id…just ask…don’t mind chating..these I m doin nothing.

Instant Nirvana

Instant messengers have sure made life that much more convenient - and at the same time also very intrusive.

Instant messaging has truly evolved into a very addictive activity-akin to a puff or a cup of tea.

If E-mail changed the way we wrote letters or communicated then Instant messaging beats writing e-mails!

Always online and accessible - instant gratification to see a friend or acquaintance logging in - a short and sweet hello - and we have a conversation that is instantly responsive and very satisfying.

Coupled with some very innovative and useful features - instant messengers have become the de-facto form of communication that has become a rage world wide.

The various cyber cafes across the length and breath of our country are doing roaring business thanks to the flood of internet users who are logged on to MSNand Yahoo messenger with ICQ following a close third.

MSN Messenger with its huge following (thanks to Hotmail and Microsoft) leads the brat pack and offers very good reach and convenience. Coupled with Microsoft Outlook Express it has a natural pick up and footprint.

Features like send a file or photo have made this very versatile and easy to use and share data. Also has a facility to upload your digital pictures into a personal album which you can share with friends and relatives worldwide restrictively or freely as per your choice.

Voice conversation and web conferencing complete the package and make this a must have on your desktop.

Yahoo Messenger too has more or less the same features and has caught on like wildfire. Growing community users and group messaging facilities make it share top honours with MSN Messenger. Coupled with group features and online file sharing this too has become a must have on any desktop. Ease of use and convenient links to mail and calendar wherein you can feed in birthday reminders makes this a very good tool. Photo albums similar to above mentioned is also a part of this IM(Instant Messenger)

ICQ was actually the pioneer (If I am not mistaken) but got sidelined by the more voracious MSN and hep Yahoo. It has one very useful feature not in the above two which is SMS to mobiles ( I have personally been using it to send SMS to Orange Mobiles -maximum 10 in a day) This is the one feature that has made me stick on to my ICQ Number till now. But its kinda funny that it doesn't allow me to SMS to BPL users in Bombay - Haven't tried any other cell operator in India or worldwide though must give it a shot one of these days.

There are more locally centric types which have also evolved in to favourites like the Indiatimes Instant messenger with a USP-it allows one to use MSN + Yahoo + ICQ all together with just one login into Indiatimes Instant Messenger.

Then there is the Rediff Bol which is supported by MTNL- Bombay On Line hence Rediff bol.

There are many others like Mirch and Pirch besides the earlier UNIX based ones during the ealier VSNL student a/c days of Rs.500/- for 500 hours of text based chat and browse only.

I would love to hear more personal observations from MS users about this.

Also I think MS should incorporate an IM too into its website to enable MSers to chat online and share views and comments in real time.

Great way to keep in touch
Mar 08, 2002 05:29 PM 3201 Views

The first IM I used, was Yahoo, but later switched on to MSN, because most of my friends used that. Right now however, I have started to prefer MSN over Yahoo. These are the only IMs that I have used, so my appraisal is going to be limited to these two only.

For starters, MSN is much smaller than Yahoo in terms of file size, and has this bright feature of letting one user know when the other one is typing a message back. Apart from that, ever since they upgraded the smileys to graphical icons, instead of their keyboard inputs it’s become much livelier (the smileys themselves have also acquired a 3D look).

Another good thing about MSN, is that you don’t need a Hotmail ID. Through passport, you can create an account using any e-mail ID.

A couple of features that MSN still lacks however, is conversation archival and the ability to be able to send messages to the person even when he is not online, so that he can see it as soon as he logs on.

The best of the CHAT programs
Feb 22, 2002 01:52 AM 13102 Views

I believe msn is the best ''chat'' program available today. They upgrade the program on a regular basis so you aren't stuck with the same ''boring'' features. They are constantly adding new things, making the program ''essential'' to you, the consumer.

Msn Chat is my favorite because first of all I like the ability to choose who I will chat with and whom I will not. You have to approve any requests to add your nick to anyone's list.

Your friends that you have approved will appear in a list within the program and you will be able to see with a quick glance who is online and who is not. A separate window pops up when someone on your list signs on telling you they are ''online''.

Another feature that I like is the ''away'' settings. You have one for away, busy, be right back, on the phone, out to lunch and the best one of all appear offline. This feature is nice if you really don't feel like chatting but do need to talk to one person on your list. This way you can sign online whenever they sign on and you don't have to be bothered with other chats.

A fun feature that msn has are all the symbols that you can use. They call them ''emotions'' here. You will find a variety of faces, smiley, frowns, tongue out, sunglasses, surprised faces, etc., along with stars, hearts, broken heats, phone, cake, camera, roses, and more! You can express yourself here not only with words but symbols! It just adds some fun to chat!

Msn also has different fonts, you can change the size as well as the color of your print. I like this feature! You can easily distinguish in between what you say and your friends!

You can send an email to a friend with the click of the mouse, start net-meeting, send files and/or photos, or make a phone call. You can also have multiple chats, and invite others to your conversation which is a nice feature. I belive this is limited to 5 per chat session, but not sure. I don't usually what with more than 2-3 at once anyway.

I find the service is very good and rarely not available. I highly recommend this chat program to anyone that likes to chat!
