Not the best voice recongintion
Nov 09, 2015 02:10 PM 2298 Views

First thing is. the software is too costly and big to download. 3.25 GB guys. installing it takes time.

In-use experience uses only less ram. Good interface. It can type anywhere like. it will type in the place you keep the cursor.

It cannot auto capitalize. like if you say wifi. it types as same. Not like WiFi.It have a option like, you can talk in mobile, and it will recognize in computer. I used that option. but it is not that much fast. Very slow transition.

I used voice note 2 extension from chrome which is only 100 kb. and recognizes everything just the way I said.

Too Much Time Training This Dragon
Jun 12, 2015 11:58 AM 3138 Views

When I was young I was a fan of Perry Mason novels. I learned that he wrote by dictating to his secretary. Today, much that would have been magic when I was young is a fact of life. People talk to their phones, doors open by themselves.

My husband had got Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 when we were in Malaysia, sometime between 2005 and 2010. I installed it on my PC as I had many writings of my father which were not in electronic format and which I had to input for my blog which is dedicated to him.

It was the July 2006 version for Windows 2000 SP4+, XP SP1+.

This speech recognition software package, Dragon NaturallySpeaking( Dragon for PC, or DNS), was developed by Dragon Systems of Newton, Massachusetts, which then merged with Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products and was later taken over by Nuance Communications, (formerly ScanSoft). It can be used on Windows PCs. The most recent version is 13.

What is dictated appears in a floating tooltip. This display can be suppressed to increase speed. When you pause, the program transcribes the dictation in a window where the cursor is .

This software has three “primary areas of functionality”: dictation, text-to-speech and command input.

The user can dictate and that is transcribed as text, a document can be synthesized as audio stream, commands can be issued.

I had to spend a lot of time "training" it and that included many funny moments. It was also very frustrating.

Another problem was that the ear and mouth piece gadget supplied with it(not sure if it was or we got it separately) got spoiled soon-the sponge bits disintegrated.

Unfortunately, so far as I could find, it cannot be installed on Windows 7. This is sad because I still have a lot of writings to input but, on the bright side, that is helping me improve my typing skills!

I must say they have no interest in support as there has been no response when I contacted them on their FaceBook page to ask how I could overcome the problem of installing it on Windows 7.

All in all, it is a very useful piece of software.

Price in India on Amazon is given as Rs. 5, 635.30

Indian edition Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0
Nov 12, 2007 06:37 PM 9107 Views

After a recent accident my life as a writer was completely shattered with the disability to move my limbs. A friend of mine strongly suggested this program to me & after searching through a few website for review & also this forum I called the Dragon People.

After seeing a demo, I was immediately convinced the program & very recently bought a copy of Indian edition Dragon NaturallySpeaking software 9.0 from Dragon's Mumbai based distributor ICONS (Very professional set of People)..... It works with absolute ease. Just trained it & I am getting an accuracy of almost 99%.

I recommend this software to anyone who has a lot of typing work.. In fact I have typed this review using the same.

I thank all who had given their precious review here to help me take a decision. I rate it as one of the finest software I’ve ever used.

Regards

Raj Gulati,

Mumbai.

Still in Labs.. Not meant for public use

The Speech Recognition Softwares(Dragon, Philips, etc) actually belongs to the Artificial Intelligence(AI) section of the Softwares. The AI has been there for around some time. But the fact is that, the evolution of the AI softwares is still not completed yet( not even half way through). There are a few who claimed to have produced Speech recognition software. But, from my experiences, I found no speech recognition software to be even 50% efficient.

The Dragon, when I had used found very difficult, and from my experience, didnt worked at all. First, we had to train the software with our sound. Its like training a 6 month old children computer programming. We have to first of all adjust the mic and all for optimum performance. The ambience should be noise free. The training actually means training for the user too. The thing is that we have to study the speed at which we should talk to the software.

The dragon, even if it is trained well, could not be used as one may think. Some one may be thinking like the computer could be controlled without the Mouse and Keyboard if the Dragon is once installed. Thats 100% wrong. One another thing is that, this software tends to slow down the system too.

So I think this software is a complete waste for any one. It could only be used as a fancy tool.

Thanks,

Adarsh

It's always been a cyberpunk's idea of heaven, forget the mouse and keyboard and bone up your vowels, it's time to drive your PC by voice alone.

I've been suffering a bit lately with a bit of repetitive strain injury because of overuse of the old push-me-pull-you mouse and so I finally decided to try out a copy of Dragon Naturally Speaking 4 to see if it manages to live up to the hype. A copy will run you a touch under 70 notes, but I got my copy as part of one of those freebie CD's you get on the front of monthly PC mags. It was a full version, and as the programs that come on the disks with PC Pro are normally pretty reliable, I decided to take the plunge.

You need to have a microphone to make the package work, but it's relatively easy to load up. It's recommended that you spend as much time as possible training Dragon by reading out passages to it so that it can get to grips with your vocal inflections and accent, and this is always a bit of a drag, although the text you get with Dragon is pretty interesting by itself, with excerpts from 2001, 3001 and Dogbert's Secret Book of Management. I did quite a bit from this latter text and it was all I could do to avoid laughing out loud (I'm actually exaggerating now, I mean you tell me how often you or anyone you know has ever actually laughed out loud at anything). Anyway decent text does make the time pass and you can space it out over a few days if you really struggle.

Anyway, after about 15 minutes or so of training your program, Dragon claim that your speech will be fairly accurately translated. It's claimed that Dragon is the most accurate speech recognition program on the market, and I have to say I was quite impressed. The more training you give the higher the accuracy and so I?ve been building up over a few days.

Dragon also allows you to use some of your own text that includes specialised vocabulary such as that you would use when writing reports or letters at work, but that's a bit of a pain, and I found it easier to just build up via reading out the suggested texts.

You can also train while you're on the job (so to speak) by correcting any words the program gets wrong as you go through, but things get a bit disjointed if you do that. Still, stick at it and Dragon genuinely will reward your efforts. The training as you go along is the most effective way to sort the program, but as I've said it can be a bit of a pain.

I was extremely satisfied with Dragon after I?d been using it for a while, although I would suggest to you that it's main use is in dictating text. You can use your voice to control programs (if you can get used to saying things like ''Click File Click Open'', although I did find that Microsoft XP Home Edition did object to allowing you to do anything down that route on both Word and Excel. Dragon's own word processing software did work under XP, though, so I knew it wasn't the mike or the program but an oddity on the Microsoft packages. It should work okay, but I got well sick and tired of screaming out ''Click File'' after a couple of minutes. ''Start Microsoft Word'' worked in opening the program alright, but try as I might I just couldn't get Word to accept any commands, which was a bit of a bummer. You can see how useful it would be to drive everything by voice alone, but it looks like it could take some time to get such things operating properly.

Having said all that, word processing by voice is a pretty decent tool, especially if you write a lot of documents like I do, so even that facility is a pretty neat option.

I found that in general terms, as long as you don't use too much jargon, don't rush ahead of your computer's processor too far and speak quite clearly, then Dragon Naturally Speaking is a pretty effective program. At times you feel that you might be able to work a bit quicker with the normal tools of the trade, but it's certainly an advantage when you're getting jabbing pains down your right arm to be able to say what you want rather than typing it.

It's going to be a few years, though, before the fantasies of Star Trek come close to being achieved in real life.

A couple of days after I got Dragon up and running I was able to use it to compose a recent review on The Hobbit (plug plug plug) and it came out pretty well, without too many corrections being needed.

Just to give you an idea of the quality, I thought I'd show you exactly how good Dragon is. The last few paragraphs are now repeated below, exactly as Dragon translated them from me reading them out.

Now, I hope you'll agree that that ain't too bad an attempt at all and it's relatively easy to go through it afterwards making the corrections you do need. Even easier, if you highlight the errored text, say ''Correct that'' and ''Train'' to get things exactly right. You'll soon get used to talking like a total moron, don't worry, although things are a bit odd at first.

I recently bought the upgrade of Indian edition dragon naturallyspeaking 7.0 Preferred.

I must say its amazing....it was always one of the most admired software I have ever used..

New features like : Natural Punctuation, insertion of logo & bitmap pic in document by voice, Read feature, user friendly interface are some of the added feature in this version....The only hitch is its still a resource hunger software...But if one has PIV, 256 MB RAM..then its a piece of cake...Training time reduced to 5 mins...Accuracy as high as 95-98%.

ITS A STEAL FOR RS.8000/- upgarde version OFFERED BY MUMBAI BASED ICONSGROUP.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10. Just got more better
Nov 23, 2001 12:04 PM 7497 Views

Hi Friends,

Just bought a new copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 10 wireless (now comes with a Plantronic Calisto Bluetooth headset) from ICONS.

I think it's by far the best product Nuance has ever developed.

Natural commands is very welcomed, so new users don't have to remember the exact command.

It's more faster & atleast 20% more accurate then 9.

Now training time reduced to literally 4-5 minutes. Amazing accuracy with my local Indian accent.

You don't have to change your accent or way of talking, speak naturally with your normal pace, it delivers amazing results.

One of the major extensions to the command set of DNS 10 is the ability to work with search engines, such as Google, Yahoo!, Being able to say “Search the Web for Amitabh Bachhan” or “Search maps for Thai restaurants in Mumbai” – commands that open your web browser and run your default search or map engine with the details you’ve spoken – is getting that bit closer to computer interaction on the bridge of Voyager.

I wonder in few years will dragon be able to transcribe your thoughts?.

Needs minimum 512 MB RAM (Recommended 1 GB RAM).

Cheers & keep talking….

Understood? or misunderstood?
Jul 17, 2001 06:06 AM 6260 Views

Let me start by saying this .. Dragon is the best voice software on the market, and this isnt saying much. Voice recognition software still has a long way to go. You can download a free evaluation copy like I did and try this software out and I think you will come to the same conclusion I did, Companies still need to work on this type of software. Although the program recognized most of my voice commands I would say 75% went unrecognized or were misunderstood. If you can put up with repeating yourself or correcting misunderstood words on a regular basis then the little quirks of this software should not bother you at all.
