OS X has had a full life: the exuberance of youth
Nov 22, 2016 03:21 PM 1548 Views

OS X has had a full life: the exuberance of youth, gradually maturing into adulthood, and now, perhaps, entering its dotage. When I am an old operating system I shall wear… leather? The 2011 release of OS X 10.7 Lion seemed to mark the natural endpoint of the "big cat" naming scheme. But Apple couldn't resist the lure of the "cat, modifier cat" naming pattern, releasing OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion a year later. Perhaps it just wanted to give its cat nine lives. The 10th major release, OS X 10.9 Mavericks, is named after an awkwardly plural California surfing spot, finally ending the feline dynasty. But what part of the operating system's existence is this? The afterlife? When it comes to OS X, many people are suffering from the end-of-history illusion: the belief that while the Mac platform has consistently experienced significant enhancements in the past, it will somehow not continue to grow and mature in the future.

Apple Mac OS

Apple’s operating system has enjoyed some excellent updates over the last few years, and it benefited from Microsoft’s experimentation. While Redmond’s engineers tried to meld the desktop with touch, those in Cupertino happily refined the traditional keyboard and mouse experience. That approach turned out to be more appropriate. It meant Windows refined or changed features, while OS X gained new ones.

This year is different. Windows 10 has not only refined ideas that didn’t work but also added entirely new functionality. It is, relative to the yearly updates performed by Apple, a much larger leap forward, which makes it tougher for OS X 10.11 to stand out. El Capitan’s focus on refinement rather than big, headline features, only makes the situation worse.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean OS X has fallen behind. Apple’s lead has grown wide over the last few years. Some might argue too wide, as many users complained that Yosemite was buggier than previous releases. El Capitan chooses to stay the course — but is that the right decision?

Old Macs can apply.

The lack of feature additions in OS X 10.11 indicates that performance and stability is the goal. Of course, that’s difficult to evaluate, particularly when Apple’s performance claims are vague. Do PDFs really open “up to” four times more quickly than before? Maybe. Maybe not. I can’t say I noticed a significant improvement, but perhaps it’s more noticeable with files larger than those I typically use.

El Capitan installed and ran without a hitch on our three-year-old, barebones MacBook Air 13.

Still, Apple’s focus on performance and stability is a noticeable. Safari was a particular problem both in Yosemite and El Capitan’s beta, as it often crashed when asked to visit complex sites like Trello, an organization tool we use at Digital Trends to manage workflow. Such issues have stopped. In fact, it’s been weeks since I’ve seen the operating system, or any first-party software, crash or freeze(knock on wood).

And 10.11 does feel as snappy as promised. My review was completed on a 2012 MacBook Air with a Core i5 processor and four gigabytes of RAM — far from cutting edge hardware. Despite that, El Capitan ran like a champ. Documents and applications open within a few seconds, and animations look smooth, though OS X still suffers from occasional graphical hitches during its most elaborate transitions. That’s a problem even the quickest Mac can’t dodge.

Looking at the interface, it is clean nice and simple interface. It is chrisp and fludic and quite responsive compared to any other OS. It has wide range of wedgets which shows notifications and all in nice and simplified Dock.

The features that are missing in the present OS are the Dark theme. It has beautiful translucent dropdown menu. Most of the things are controlled through commend key but it also supports gestures in the trackpad. It is the best OS by far by Apple.

Future is here!

It is the Unix based Operating system by Apple Inc. It was launched as OS X Cheetah, back in 2001. and presently its latest version is names ad El Captain. Apple described this release as containing "Refinements to the Mac Experience" and "Improvements to System Performance" rather than new features. Refinements include public transport built into the Maps application, GUI improvements to the Notes application, adopting San Francisco as the system font, and the introduction of System Integrity Protection. It is easy to use and supports multiple gestures to use. It also has wide numbers Apps in the app store. Overall its a best OS yet made by Apple.

Zavions Support for Mac is the best service I have ever found. I came to know about this service from one of my friends. They explained me how my device will work because my device was entirely new. They helped me in installing Mac OS X by providing all the instructions in details and in addition to that it also suggests me some tips on customizing and upgrading it as well.Thank you for helping me out.

The future is here, the future is OS-X!!!

In my previous review (about apple iBook & all Macs in general, titled ''an apple a day..''), I had briefly mentioned about OS-X, the operating system that all new macs run on.

well, that was just the tip of the iceberg! here I shall try to give an in-depth analysis & try to explain why it is (well, almost) about to be crowned as the ''world's most advanced operating system''

you would, naturally, notice a bit of repetition if you've read the previous one, but i'll try my best not to say the same things over again!!

i would be covering OS-X.2.8 (Jaguar) for now. I will submit a review on OS-X.3 (Panther) as soon as I install it & use it for a few days. so here goes:

INSTALLING:

The installation of 10.2 IS very smooth, you don't need to be a computer wiz to do it. even if you're doing any such thing for the first time, you'll breeze through! You put the CD in, you boot with it, & just follow it up once a while, and that's pretty much all there is into it. During installing you could even go make a cup of coffee, be back in time to insert the 2nd CD & then go back, enjoy your coffee & by the time you're done with your cuppa, installation is also done. The installation takes 20-40 minutes depending on your system configuration

CONFIGURING IT:

virtually everything that is of importance to you can be fiddled about with the help of ''System Preferences'' - a unified collection of all settings from network proxies, to internet, modem settings, display colors, sound, security, multiple-users... you name it you have it!! for what you don't see or know, the system automatically figures out everything for you! child's play!!

LOOKS/APPEARANCE:

this is where I honestly fall short of words to describe the very mac experience!! no windows/PC font & desktop settings can ever be as polished as the mac's! the cool & elegant ''aqua'' interface makes everything look eye-catching. besides no matter how bright, the display is never glaring or hard on the eyes. this is one feature that I marvel about!

USAGE:

OS X defines ''easy to use''. no matter What OS (DOS/windows/Linux) you're used to, you’ll pick up OS X pretty quickly. even if you're migrating from older OS versions (especially from 9.2), all it takes is a few mouse-clicks & you're all set to work in this new environment. All the features you expect are there, and it will take only a little playing around to find them. right from opening applications. switching between active applications or even moving between open documents, the ''Dock'' application proves it's versatility in every way! The ''Finder'' does it's job (just like what the name says) effortlessly & fast!

SOFTWARE/APPLICATIONS:

For office or home, OS X fite perfectly. MS Office users can install Office v. X and keep on working as if nothing's changed!! AppleWorks, which has all the Office functionality is a less expensive but sleeker package that comes in free. Adobe & Macromedia are just some of te bigger players who have released almost all their products for OS-X. for multimedia-philes, there's the amazing quick-time & iTunes to keep you charmed. gaming is a virtually new experience on the mac with the amazing clarity of display & the richness of sound. of course I have to mention that OS-X will not ''natively'' run programs designed for earlier OSs. for these programs, the classic environment (OS9) is launched within OS-X & the program is run. this minor issue is something that apple would not like to keep and I do believe they are working on it. so for now, you would also have OS9 in the background which is launched, whenever required.

NETWORKING:

macs are very easily integrated into any running network environment. file sharing with windows PCs on the network is possible in OS-X, so there's no worry about how it's going to behave!! just turn on the ''file-sharing'' option, sit back, watch & relax as your job is done without fail everytime.

DEVELOPER TOOLS:

macs are the choice of proffessional developers & the like. they were designed keeping in mind the most serious proffessionals to the most casual home users. with the impressive array of developer tools available (comes in the installation pack), why should you go searching for more programs? don't even bother. to!

UNIX COMMANDS!!!:

If you don’t really care about Unix, don't know about Unix and don’t want to, don’t worry! You’ll never have to learn a Unix command in your life to master the mac. you don't even have to learn how to spell it. but for those who live & breathe Unix, the full complement of commands and directory structures are available through the Terminal.

& besides, there's always the jargon of no-crashing, no freezing, no viruses which I shall avoid to elaborate for fear of repetition!!!

Jaguar (10.2.8) is an improvemnt over previous versions of OS-X (especially 10 & 10.1) which had lots of bugs. overall, Jaguar is a very stable release. it does look similar to earlier versions, but it's smoother & faster.
