You should first choose a screen size of your choice. Monitors start from 17 inch and go up to 27 inches. From a long time, the trend has been 18 inch as they are good value for money.
However they mostly come with 1366x768 resolution which I think is decent enough for 18 inch but for More detail and Gaming, you should prefer a Full HD Monitor. i.e. 1920x1080 pixels.
As a matter of fact these monitors will be a little bigger in size. Ranging from 21 to 27 inches but the quality you will get will still be better than 1366x768 Monitors, because of More pixels per inch, which is called Pixel density and obviously 1080p on 21 inch will look better than that on 27 inch. Or even better, get a QHD Monitor i.e. 2560×1440 or even 4K if you're budget is that much.
Some monitors may have built in speakers which will be an added advantage, however they'd likely be 1-3 W, means not so powerful, but they can still be good for basic use.
Now the most important thing you should check for an Led monitor is whether it has an HDMI port are not. HDMI is a new standard that was developed for Large size HD TV's. The advantage of HDMI over VGA and DVI is that it can carry both audio and video. Actually DVI and HDMI both transmit digital signals which results in a better picture Quality, but DVI doesn't carry Audio.
Which means you can easily connect a TV to your computer through the HDMI port and get Audio and Video both from the TV using one single connection. However using a DVI port you cant do so. VGA is even worse as it transmits Analog signals and and it's out of trend now, but its still being widely used as Low Resolution Monitors have only VGA port. Also called D-SUB.
Then there are other things Like Contrast ratio, Response Time, Refresh Rate, Panel Type, which is often overlooked. Though they wont make a huge difference unless you're gaming, but I think you should know this.
Contrast ratio is the ability of a monitor to show bright and dark colours clearly. It is actually the ratio of Brightest to the darkest colour a monitor can display. Namely Black and White. To make it simple, Higher the Contrast ratio, better will be the picture Quality. But you don't need to worry about it much because LED monitors have a very high contrast ratio as compared to LCD.
Refresh rate is the number of frames a monitor can show per second. Generally, its 60 fps even in Low resolution Monitors and that's a good thing, but you may note that even if your Computer is showing mire than 60 fps while playing Games, you will be actually seeing only 60 fps because your monitor's Refresh rate is 60 Hz.
If you are a gamer, and /or you have a powerful PC, you can't take this for granted. If you have the money, go for a 75 Hz Monitor. Beyond that, monitors could be very expensive. At the maximum, you can buy a 144 Hz monitor. From BenQ.
Response time is the delay a monitor makes to display the upcoming frame on the Monitor. Generally it can be ignored, but for gamers and professional photographers, it is important. Lower the response time, smoother the viewing Experience.
Now there are many types of panels LED monitors use. Like TN, VA, and IPS. But IPS panels by far provide the Best color reproduction. For this reason always choose an IPS panel Monitor over the others.
In short if you are willing to buy a 1920x1080 pixels monitor with good specs, go for LG or Dell. They make the best LED monitors.
