An underrated actor of all times

Sunil dutt was one of the greatest actor that bollywood's ever had, I was pretty happy to seem him in munnabhai m.b.b.s, along with his son sanjay dutt, a real good movie, and of course sunil dutt's performance was his original, his first scene when he gets of the train, tells you how experience and a good actor he was.

He was born in a village called khurd in punjab, khurd is now a part of paakistan, his family moved to india in 1947 during the partition of india. He married nargis, who died of cancer in 1981, He has 1 son sanjay dutt, 2 daughters and son in law kumar gaurav.

There is no doubt that sunil dutt of course was a great actor, but his name isn't mentioned like amitabh, shahrukh, of course he was better actor then then these two in my opinion, which is pretty unfair if you look at his record of the past, films like sujata, hum hindustani, the angry youngman in mother india, mujhe jeene do, amrapali, but also he was great in the comedy department as well hit films like ek phool char kaante, of course padosan, and the muslim social gazab, and drama films like meharbaan, meri bhabhi and personal experimental films like yaadein he prettty much dil them all and was succesfull as well.

He made his entrance with the film railway platform which didn't got him much recognition, but his big break was the film mother india , his portrayal as birju in the film nargis's rebellious younger son was something new to the industry, he had done the angry youngman long before amitabh bachnan started it in zanjeer, dutt's association with nargis in the film resulted in a serious one, he soon married her after the film.

His role's in women oriented films like sujata, sadhna, mein chup rahungi were well appreciated film makers like bimal roy, br chopra, hrishikesh mukherjee gave him most roles in their films. His films like gumrah, waqt and humraaz were among his biggest succesful movies at the box office as well, his enduring performance and film has to be padosan which is a very funny comedy, along with kishore kumar's brilliant singing and performance as well and mehmood performance.

In 1961 he had threee hits in a row, milan, meherban and humraaz were hits, in the 70's he did more formulic films like heera, pran jaaye par vachan na jaaye, zakhmee, nagin, nehle pe dehle in which some were hits.

In 1981 he launched his son sanjay dutt into the industry with the film rocky which was an average film, also his wife passsed away due to cancer. He continued movies though in the 80's and the 90's as well mostly doing patriarch roles or father roles in films like laila, parampara, kshtariya, faasle.

He was also a politician and a recipient for the padmashree.

He has also received two filmfare awards for best actor

mother india and Milan

Hi Well I am writing this as a tribute to a real good genuine human being.

The above title given by me suits the late Dutt saab to the core.

Not only was he a great actor an politician but a great father as well to his children who were brought up by him alone.

Dutt saab not only made good movies or acted well he gave us film personalities like, Vinod Khanna, Leena Chandavarkar as well as Amitabh ji was given a role in Reshma aur Sehra as well.

Can anybody do a role like Mujey jeene do as he did of a dacait. Yes later stars tried it but the dacait of Mother India and Mujey jeeney do touches you as a human being.

Waqt, when he keeps saying lovingly to Sadhana his dialogue of Jaaney gulzar jaaney baahar makes him a romantic man you could love forever.

In Khandan can we forget the handicapped role he played or when he sings and tell's his son Tu hokey bada banjana aapni maata ka rakhwala.

I mean whether it be a Hamraaz, or a Gumrah it is Dutt all the way I hope people remember Nanavati the ship Commander who killed his wife watch Yeh raastey hain pyar ki with Dutt saab and Leela Naidu.

His movie Darinda or Pran jaaye par vacchan na jaaye and his best for me was Padosan, the best comedy to date.

Truth was his way of life even in politics, the people of Bandra the poor will miss him the most God rest his soul in peace.

Sunil ji wherever u may be as a star the Indian film industry will miss you.

And as an MLA the nation will miss you as well as being our late sports minister hats off Dutt saab you have left only good memories behind.

God Bless and Bye.

Sushama

Dear Sunil Saab.....

Mere hamraah bhi rushwaiyaan hai mere maazi ki

Tumhare saath guzre hue yaadon ke saaye hain….

(From Chalo Ikbaar Phir Se…)

Dear Sunil Saab,

I heard the news last night… and I could not believe my ears… Mother India has lost one of its most popular and least controversial sons…. A Great loss indeed.

In the following few lines, I will try to pass on my few words as your obituary…

Even today, when we talk of Sunil Dutt, we immediately see the Birju of Mother India… a rebel, full of vengeance, icon of the downtrodden or we see the Bhola of Padoshan… happy, innocent, smilling and full of youthful energy. This goes a long way to tell how versatile you were.

Film Career

Balraj Dutt, as you were know in your early days, you grew up to be one of the biggest icons the industry has seen. It may not be known to many that you started as a host for All India Radio doing celebrity interviews… where your would be wife Nargis was one of the first celebrities to be interviewed.

Your debut film – Railway Platform (1955) was known as a Nalini Jayawant film, and why not? She was a celebrity star that time. Probably it was Ek Hi Raasta (1956) that saw the making of not only Sunil Dutt, but also the great association with BR Chopra, which saw as many as seven memorable films. Interestingly enough, this short cameo role in Ek Hi Raasta was good enough to prove your mantle.

1957 saw the release of Mother India…. Probably the turning point of Indian cinema. Anyone who has seen the movie, can never forget the rage, the anger, the fury emoted by you in the film. Probably this image carried very long and you were offered several movies as a dacoit later on. Till date we have not seen another star getting as popular as you were in such roles.

Soon after Mother India you married Nargis… the Doyen of Indian cinema. Your career was growing slow and steady with movies like Sadhna, Sujata and Mein Chup Rahungi. With these movies, established movie makers like Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and BR Chopra defied the popular opinion and casted you in different roles in movies such as Sujata, Chhaya and Sadhna respectively.

Your ventures as a producer were received with equal applause with movies like Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke and Mujhe Jeene Do. In fact 1960s were definitely your era with Gumraah, Waqt, Humraaz, Milan, Padoshan and many more.

1970s were a different story altogether. With the swinging Rajesh Khanna in the limelight, your old image came to the mind of the movie makers and you started working more in adventurous movies, including a few shades of negative character, which was a big risk those days.

Jaani Dushman (1979) was among the last films that you made as a hero. Then came the biggest sorrow in your life with the demise of your beloved wife – Nargis. We could see the shades of the same in your film Dard Ka Rishta (1983).

Even though you have a few movies after that like Parampara and Kshatriya, your cameo appearance in Munna Bhai MBBS hasleft its mark.

Music in Your Movies

Your movies have been known for their music. I can think of singers like Talat Mahmood, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh and Kishore Kumar… all giving memorable numbers for you. May it be the love songs like Jalte Hain jisj ke liye, Itnaa naa mujhse tu pyaar badhaa or Hai… neele gagan ke tale or may these be meaningful sad songs like Aansoon samajh ke kyun mujhe, Chalo Ikbaar phir se and Mubarak ho sabko samaa yeh suhanaa… each one was special. Also worth mentioning are Raam kare aisa ho jaaye, Sawan Ka Mahina, Aha rimjhim ke yeh pyaare pyaare geet liye, Rang aur noor ki baraat etc.

Politics & Social Service

During early eighties we saw you getting yourself engaged in social service, soon after the death of your wife. In 1985 election, you took your first step in active politics by getting elected as an MP. Since then, we have seen your continuous contribution and growth, till your death. You have served the nation well….. very rarely we see a politician being in politics for two decades and not being involved in any controversy.

My 10 Favourite Movies of Yours

1. Mother India : What can I say of the movie which has changed the entire perception of Indian cinema… Birju stood out tall… a man not to be forgotten for years to come.

2. Padoshan:In this hilarious comedy, the soft and gullible Bhola was nothing less in front of seasoned comedians like Mehmood or Kishore Kumar.

3. Sujata: As a man in love with an achoot girl, people could not forget the emotions involved.

4. Gumraah: As the ex lover of the married heroine, your role had shades of negative in it, but still you came out as the winner.

5. Yadein:What to say of this movie… Never before in the world… One actor (yourself) and one set, how many people dare to make such movies!!

6. Mera Saayaa: In this suspense thriller, your role as the loving husband, who refuses to accept his wife was lovely.

7. Reshmaa Aur Sheraa: In this blood stained desert love story, your role has been the most memorable ones.

8. Nagin: Several versions of snake based movies have been made in India, but Nagin remains as one of the best till date.

9: Mujhe Jeene Do:One of your masterpieces in a Dacoit role.

10. Chhayaa:In this Hrishikesh Mukherjee starrer, your soft romantic role has been one of my most favourite ones.

Finally…..

The industry has missed a gentleman… we all will miss you… You have been a star equally appealing the masses and classes.

May your soul rest in peace….

Finally… I would like to quote from Chalo Ikbaa Phir Se….

Taaroof Rog ho jaye to ushko bhulna behetar

Talooq bojh ban jaaye to ushko todnaa aachhaa…

Woh afsaana, jeese anjaam tak laa naa naa ho munkin…

Ushe ek khoobsurat mod de kar chhodnaa aachhaa…

(If introduction becomes a disease, its better to forget him/her

If relationship becomes a burden, its better to break it….

That story, which cannot be brought to a logical conclusion…

Its better to give it a nice twist and end it there…..)

…….. A fan of yours…..

A tribute- ACTOR, SOCIAL activist and Politician

Sunil Dutt wore many hats and excelled in a plethora of roles that came his way -- both on and off screen. Born on June six, 1929, Sunil Dutt grew up as Balraj Dutt in a family that had survived the partition of India. A student of Mumbai's Jai Hind College, he first started off as radio show host and celebrity interviewer, which led to his first encounter with the glamour world. Interestingly, wife-to-be Nargis was one of the celebrities he met in the course of his work.

Soon, Dutt got a chance to enter the world of cinema when director Ramesh Saigal offered him the hero's role in his Nalini Jaywant starrer `Railway Platform' (1955). `Ek Hi Raasta' (1956), marked the start of a seven-film long association with BR Chopra. Dutt's real breakthrough came with Mehboob Khan's magnum opus `Mother India' (1957). His portrayal of Birju, Nargis' rebellious younger son, portrayed a raw, urgent energy. Dutt's association with Nargis in the movie resulted in a more serious one, when he married her after the release of the film.

Dutt's roles in women-oriented films like `Sadhna' (1958), `Sujata' (1959) and `Main Chup Rahungi' (1962) were well-appreciated. Noted filmmakers like Bimal Roy (Sujata, Usne Kaha Tha), Hrishikesh Mukherji (Chhaya) and BR Chopra (Sadhna) dared to defy Sunil Dutt's established `Rebellious Birju' image and cast him as a sensitive lover.

Dutt turned producer in the early sixties with a couple of offbeat movies -- `Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke' (1963), where heroine Leela Naidu has an adulterous relationship and Mujhe Jeene Do (1963) where he played a tough-as-a-nails dacoit. In his cinemantic association with BR Chopra, Dutt gave three big hits in the sixties - `gumraah' (1963), `waqt' (1965) and `humraaz' (1967). He also worked with south Indian filmmakers which resulted in emotion-heavy, rural-based hits with Nutan like `Khandaan' and `Milan'.

In 1967, he had a hat-trick of hits with `Milan', `Meherban' and `Humraaz'. His role of a buffoon in Mehmood's `Padosan' (1968) was much appreciated. In 1971, he produced the blood-splattered desert love story `Reshma Aur Shera' which failed to do well at the box office. Still, hits like `Zakhmee' (1975), `Nagin' (1976) and `Jaani Dushman' (1979) ensured that Dutt was seen romancing much-younger heroines like Rekha (Nagin, Ahimsa) and Reena Roy (Paapi, Jaani Dushman).

In 1981, Dutt's world was rocked when his wife Nargis died after a protracted battle with her cancer. In the same year, his production `Rocky' starring his son Sanjay, hit the screens. Subsequently Dutt produced a film on cancer called `Dard Ka Rishta'(1983) and later joined politics and social work. But the actor in Dutt continued to surface during the last decade with movies with select filmmakers like JP Dutta (Kshatriya) and Yash Chopra (Parampara). His last screen cameo was in Rajkumar Hirani's immensely popular laugh riot `Munnabhai MBBS' where he played on-screen father to his son Sanjay.

Few know that dutt entertained Indian Army Jawans after conflicts with China (1962) and Pakistan (1965 and 1971) by organising Ajanta Arts Welfare troupe and visiting various sectors where Indian Army jawans were wounded in action. He led a cultural delegation of eminent artists to Bangladesh (1971) to entertain Indian Army and Mukti Bahini.

Having lost wife Nargis to cancer, the cause of cancer cure was close to his heart. He made the film, ''Dard Ka Rishta'' on cancer and its cure and donated its profit to Tata Memorial Hospital and offered the film free to Pakistan and Bangladesh for raising funds for cancer treatment. He also brought drugs from the united states for India's first bone marrow transplant operation at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Dutt also helped former Pakistan cricketer Imran Khan raise over a lakh pounds for building a cancer hospital in Pakistan named after the latter's mother. After the killer quake in Latur and Osmanabad districts in 1993, Dutt rallied around and collected and handed over to Maharashtra Chief Minister, Rs. 42 lakh for the earthquake victims of Maharashtra and personally visited and provided blankets and utensils to the quake victims.

He organised and led a relay hunger strike of artistes and technicians of film industry for peace in Mumbai after 1992-93 riots and resigned as a member of parliament in protest against the riots.

Dutt had also served in the army as temporary havildar clerk for about a year. As a refugee in 1947, he got a job as a civilian clerk at headquarters of Royal India Army Supply Corp, Lucknow to support his displaced family.

Dutt was also famous for his padyatras.

He organised and led Mahashanti Padyatra from Mumbai to Amritsar in 1987, travelling 2,000 kilometres with daughter Priya and 80 other individuals for peace and harmony in Punjab. He undertook a peace march with 14 persons and daughter Priya in 1988, from Nagasaki to Hiroshima (Japan) covering 500 kilometres for world peace and nuclear disarmament.

In 1955, Dutt drove through Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, north eastern states of India, West Bengal, Bihar and reached Red Fort, travelling 10,000 kilometres spreading awareness among youth on the sacrifices of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Indian National Army. Dutt had also served as director of the Board of Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation and also as a member of Film and Television Institute of India. He also served as a member of the jury at Leipzig film festival.

Dutt, whose filmstar son Sanjay had to undergo an intensive therapy for drug abuse, had been appointed chairman of anti-narcotics cell of AICC by the then Congress President Rajiv Gandhi. Dutt was honoured with Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana award in 1998, by the then president Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma for promoting peace, harmony, fight against violence and terrorism.

He also received the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad award for national integration and communal harmony in 1997.

This is one small contruibtion form my seid e to this multi-talented personality.

Please give your comments and pay homage to this great soul.
