For me the first attraction is their LCD display . I am really like that . Its really clear . And strong . One time my brother bambard on that ball , then also it cannot be Break and scratches also . That much strong .

It's pointing device is really handy . Some pointing devices are not easily operated in starting but that when use it can be feel like we are daily use that . The good hard disk provide IBM.

Every device its main point is their battery . And it's battery is nice . If continue use full day then also its not create any problem. That battery or energy saver . The more memory space is available , so it can be easy to store more content , information , backups , data etc.

The keyboard is also good working . I am use continue two years but not going any keywords printing and all keys are operating .

Hello friends today I will tell you about my ibm r51 laptop which is two years old. It has 1 gb ram and 40 gb hard disk drive and a dual core processor. The screen is 11.9 inches which is square. I would really like to tell you that you should go for it and buy it from a trusted store. Few things are there to tell about which are you should always take care of your laptop that is you should keep it in a cool place. Charge it fully without using the laptop. Do not load anything above 36 gb otherwise it will hang. You should close the useless tabs to free ram storage. The most important thing is that you should keep on refreshing always it is very good for laptops. One secret of continuous refreshing is 1st click refresh and just the long press F5 button you will see that your laptop is refreshing simultaneously. If you can maintain these certain things you can freely go to buy this one.

IBM's new ThinkPad R51 focuses on function. The mainstream laptop's plain black case doesn't elicit excitement, but its fast Pentium M processor and ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chip deliver ample horsepower for the average user in the home or business. In addition to speed, the IBM ThinkPad R51 boasts some cool component options, such as a 15-inch display with a fine 1, 400x1, 050 native resolution, a DVD-RW drive, and integrated 802.11b/g wireless.

Load up on these options, however, and you could owe IBM a pretty penny, because high-end configurations are pricey. If you're a typical business or home user on a budget and you'd be satisfied with a basic configuration, give the IBM ThinkPad R51 a try.

Fabulous laptop for business use!

If you are a user who want to use the laptop for professional reasons then this laptop is just fabuous!

It has all the things which one needs now a days: WIFI, harddisk protection. The stuff works like a charm!

If you are going for R51, I will suggest you to get one with bluetooth support also.

Btw, IBM has different models(e.g. mine is R51 2887 NQ). For some strange reasons IBM don't fit such extra features which correspond to other models, so please think whether you can stretch your budget a bit and go for the features one time at purchase. I had to go for PCMCIA bluetooth later which I regret now. Also if you are a Java(java ee) programmer I would suggest you go for at least 1GB or more for ultimate experience.

IBM has some fabuous utilities. The one I liked most is ThinkVantage Access Connection. I don't know whether it runs on other laptops but for IBM laptops, you can keep printers/firewall settings/applications for each WLAN/LAN connection. So if I am in office, automatically office printer get selected, file sharing is on. While if I am at home, automatically home printer gets selected. On public WLANs I can preconfigure that I don't want file sharing etc so that laptop is not vulnerable!

This laptop can work with Linux variants also! I have tried Debian and Ubuntu and it works fabuous!

IBM Think Pad

Hi guys ,

I just love my think pad. I am using it since last 6 months. so during that period I didn't face any problem. even its very easy to carry and at th same time easy to use.

One more things which make it different ..you don't need any usb light ..because it has its own night light which is very useful.

Regarding prices it is little costly but still I would suggest to buy it ...because when you will work with think pad you will be very comfortable to do your work....you can put it on your lap :-)

otherwise else laptops you can't carry for much time....you will have to put it on table.. I am a sales person so I need to travel many of the time so it gives me comfort in case o battry also..so we can do our work during travel also...because sometime people buy some cheap laptops and they are not able to use it as a laptop..what it is.

If you people are interested in buying this laptop you can chek it out https://allindiadeals.com

some good deals are going on.

Thanks

Costlier but Sturdier.. Thumbs up..

I have had opportunity to watch a lot of different models of Laptops on campus, & after more than a year of experience with maintaining many different types of laptops (when the guys and gals mess them up) I am happy that I chose to go with an IBM than a Compaq or any other..

To name a few, I have seen Compaq, Acer, Toshiba and recently HP-Compaq (the latest Model)

My laptop is a IBM Thinkpad R-51 series model. One of the most expensive (almost one and half times costlier than the closest competitor - Compaq)

I'll list down all the details of my machine and comment on them if necessary.

Along with the reason why a feature is different from Other brands.

___________________________________________________________________

Warranty:

One year Replacement Warranty

Three year Carry-in Service warranty (Replacement at Extra cost)

Lifetime Technical Support warranty

Other brands usually DO NOT give the Three year Carry-in warranty, but they also must be offering it now. Please check it before making a decision.

______

Drivers update feature on IBM Website:

You get a software (IBM Software Installer) which automatically checks, downloads and updates your Device Drivers. So all you need is an Internet connection. This software picks up the update from where it dropped off, which might be due to a failed Internet connection.. The whole update takes one night at 100kbps connection..

(NOTE: On Dialup it'll take forever the first time you update.)

But another good thing is you can easily choose what to update and what not to, which is a GREAT feature.

Other brands come with just a CD, so every time you have to format and reinstall, it'll take atleast one whole day.

______

Keyboard and Mouse Layout:

Many people might not think of this as a problem, but believe me it is a BIG Problem. This is because your brain gets used to clicking certain special keys (like Del, Esc, F1, PgUp and PgDn) and when you suddenly start working with a different layout, it takes time for you to get used to. And again, when you work with normal Keyboards, same problem arises.

IBM maintains the Keyboard Layout as your old trustworthy Desktop. No problems here.

The only problem with the Keyboard is that it doesnt come with a Windows key.

The Touchpad is standard on all, but R51 comes with a Trackpoint, which if you get used to makes you atleast twice as fast as with the Touchpad.

Other brands: Almost all the other ones that I have seen change the Layout, and it becomes quite a bit of a hassle.

Other brands usually dont come with a Trackpoint, but do check this feature.

______

Size, Sturdiness, Bulkiness, etc

Small manageable size.

Moderate to heavy weight (depending whether you are carrying the Power Adapter)

Stylish looks - It does not look like an ugly Box but like a REAL Notebook. This is a personal opinion of mine and others might prefer different looks. Performance-wise this thing DOESNT matter at all.

______

Performance:

NOTE: I assume that you will be maintaining your Laptop by running all the Maintenance tools in Windows, updated Antivirus and Antispyware software and Registry cleaners. Without all these, there is NO point in going for ANY LAPTOP, or for that matter any computer, because no matter whether it is an IBM or not, you will end with an ABACUS or at most a Pentium 1 series computer.

Enough gyan there, now on with the review...

I have not seen performance degradation until I subjected the Laptop to several heavy processes at the same time.

Video Card: can make let you play some games, but not the high end graphics ones. But then ANY laptop is NOT MEANT for gaming. It'll let you play games like CounterStrike, Empire Earth, NFS 5 (NOT Underground & Hot Pursuit), but thats all.

Sound Card: is good enough for listening to music.

Speakers: is where IBM fails. Their capacity is highly limited and if you want to watch movies, then you HAVE TO have headphones.

Ports & Devices: All the ports are quickly accessible, but there are three bad things.

1. USB ports are only 2 in number and are located very close to each other. So they get occupied sooner, but attaching 2 devices at the same time becomes a problem.

(Review edited, Courtesy: ANNUBHAV_SHUKRE)

Addition: I would like to mention that I have personally not faced any major problem because of this, because one usually doesnt need to attach more than 2 USB devices at a time.

2. SD Memory Card Port is NOT present, so you cannot use the SD Memory Card from your Camera and attach it directly.

(Review edited, Courtesy: ANNUBHAV_SHUKRE)

Addition:Usually Digital Cameras come with support software and a cable that can be used to quickly transfer photos. And for data transfer, USB Pen drives have become popular anyways.

3. Bluetooth is NOT available. I did not ask for it, but I think you can get it for a little extra price.

Other brands: Except for the 3 problems above, IBM is as good or better than other brands.

______

Product Recovery:

You will need this feature in case

  1. you have somehow managed to mess up your laptop beyond repair.

  2. the laptop has become very slow from prolonged use and reformatting will make it fresh again.

In either of the cases:

IBM does not, repeat DOES NOT come ANY CDs whatsoever. What these brilliant guys have done is that they have reserved about 4 GBs of space on the Hard Drive itself, which has got all the files needed for formatting and reinstalling Windows with all the standard software.

Norton 90 days version

RecordNow (without capability to burn Video CDs)

InterVideo DVD (for watching DVD Movies)

All Device drivers (but you will need to update them again)

It is better than Other brands because even if you are not comfortable with reinstalling Windows, it'll do it for you. No issues about installing Software and Drivers.

It is NOT better because it eats up your 4 GB of space.

My verdict: Let it eat that space. Helps you in the long run..

WARNING:Please do not format the HDD using a standard Windows XP CD just to recover this space. If you ever need to reinstall everything, you wont have any CDs and the only option will be to take your almost dead IBM to the nearest Service Center and I am not sure whether they will charge you for this brilliant action of yours!!!

Price:

I got my IBM for Rs. 62500 (Taxes extra), but this was in January 2005 and that too because it was under Student discount then. The actual price was Rs. 67500.

The latest I have heard is that the prices have gone up.

Please check the prices because anyways, laptop prices fluctuate rapidly.

In any case, expect IBM prices to be around one and a half times more than the nearest competitor, which is usually Compaq.

Excellent build, good performance

Well, my first review on MS. I've been a regular visitor on this site for a long time now, and I think it is an excellent concept to go through actual user reviews before deciding to buy any product. MS helped a lot in that way.

Getting straight to the review, I was in search of a laptop which would be suitable for me in the long run. My requirements were clear enough - my budget wasn't high, certainly not beyond 50K Rs, and there were certain features which were a must in the machine. Other than that I didn't have any brand preferences. I wanted a wireless network adapter and a DVD drive. Firstly I started off with the new Compaq V series (the ad which is on TV nowaday), the one with the widescreen. Personally, I wasn't too big a fan of this series because the wide screen troubled me a lot. Till now the aspect ratio of most laptops and desktops has been standard approx 4:3. Now this new widescreen (but flatter) laptops come up, and I'm thinking, I don't need this kind of screen. I mean it would be useful only for widescreen DVDs (of which I'm not a fan yet) and also current games don't completely support the wide screen and could lead to distorted displays.

So I got that series out of the way. I asked a few dealers about the older M series but they said that they didn't stock it anymore. Compaq has only widescreen laptops available now. IBM wasn't my first choice till now as I was in the impression that they provided only high-end (over 1lakh Rs laptops). But the dealer assured me that they have lower end models as well. The only catch would be that it would have Linux or DOS installed in it! I decided that wouldn't be a problem. I wanted good quality and dependability on the hardware part.

So after a few comparisons, I settled for an IBM R51 Thinkpad. And I must say that IBM doesn't have a strong brand name for nothing. Lookwise the laptop seems dull at first sight, but gradually you start to fall in love with it. The build quality is excellent, and it seems sturdy to hold. This model came with no software installed :-( but I plan to install Linux on it and that will take care of that. For the meanwhile, I'm running it on windows. My dealer helped me get the driver cds and the utilities for the various extra functionalites such as the Active Protection system (the air bag funda) and many other nice features. Of course I don't have the heart nor the courage to try out if the Active protection is working :-D

One more hot feature is the presence of a night light at the top of the screen. Its perfect for working in the dark whereby it beautifully illuminates the entire keyboard. The drivers installed, everything worked like a dream. I had a few problems with the network adapter in the beginning, but I realized that was a software problem.

The battery life is very good. I can get around 4 to 4:30 hours easily. Of course playing games and using other graphic intensive apps can bring it down.

Even the machine doesn't heat up like other brands I've seen e.g Compaq which heats up even just after starting. The fan starts when the temperature gets up and cools it down perfectly.

Input devices consist of an excellent tactile keyboard, with extra function keys, but unfortunately no Windows key. but that's not a problem because I swapped a Ctrl key with the Win key. Both the trackpoint and the touch pad are provided. But in my opinion, IBM/Lenovo should do away with the trackpoint (the red thingie in the centre of the keyboard) coz I don't think anyone uses it if the touch pad is present. But beware, some models don't have the touch pad, in those cases I think an external mouse is required.

This model doesn't have any firewire ports, but no complaints, Firewire is mainly used by the Mac side. Windows fans can stick with USB. Still haven't tried out the Wireless adapter, the modem or the PC card slot. But I guess these things won't disappoint my either.

IBM has an excellent support site as well. so I'm looking forward to spending a long time with this baby.

All in all, an excellent decision to buy this machine and I'm really happy with this choice. Go for it.

I was going through a couple of reviews on IBM laptops here at the forum and looks like I am going to be in the loner club of IBM lovers. So here it goes. I bought the notebook on which I am writing out this very review some 6 months ago. IBM thinkpad R51.

I needed a machine that gives me good performance and wireless moblity for my work, so after looking around I settled for R51. Why?, here are the reasons Features 1. Centrino 1.5 G 2. Wireless B/G (why b/g G wireless standard supports 54MBPS, while B supports upto 11 MBPS only) 3. 40 GB HDD 4. CD-RW/DVD ROM 5. Fire wire 1394 port 6. 512 MB RAM ( It actually has only 256 MB, but my dealer gave me a free upgrade) 7. Active HDD protection and restore features. 8. Free Lotus office suite (Though it will not match MS Office, but its legal) 9. 15'' screen 10. 3 to 4 hrs of battery life Doesn't sound bad at all does it?.

I had no issues with this machine, except for some driver problems in my CDRW drive, which IBM support guys quickly helped me fix over the phone and on top of that followed up couple of days later to ensure that it is working ok.

So now coming to the bad part, there are two things:

  1. Wieght is on the heavier side - 2.8 KGs. It may not sound much, but lugging it around for a couple of days gave me real bad shoulder ache

  2. The price, its a little on the higher side. But if you have some friends living in the US, its a good idea to ask them to get it for you, as its really cheap there and there is no problem with the customs also.
