HP Pavillion DV1615TS Reviews

Technical Details
Jul 05, 2006 11:35 AM 8668 Views

Hi All,

The details, features etc are what you can get off the other reviews, or even HP website. I will focus on other technical aspects, and my own experiences

Windows XP Home is the major setback I saw on my lapy, the day I purchased it (first week of april, 2006). Should have been WinXP Pro. But, the rest of the configuration is good for the price I paid (INR 53500)

The motherboard manufacturer, Quanta, has apparently no website of their own, and the BIOS provided by HP doesn't look too good to me. (No tweaking options!! No Info Available!!)

The piece I purchased had originally one problem. Its S-Video out was not working. So if you are planning to buy this piece, ask the retailer to check S-Video out first.

The Lapy has also developed a new problem, The Hard-disk, has now started giving an error lately, on bootup, saying SMART failure detected!!

Due to these problems, The lapy is about to visit the service centre in a not-too-distant future.

Apart from these issues, The laptop is FINE. For its price and features it provides, its a work of art! Although the CPU is a solo dothan core, its quite decent for the performance. A 65nm CPU might have saved much more power for battery backup (I concentrated on battery part a bit.. i'll explain shortly), but it would also have increased prices quite a bit (5118TS??). A DDR2 RAM ans someone else has earlier pointed out, would sure have given some more kick!

The intel 915 graphics performs decently, although an optional graphics (ATI / nVidia) at the retailer would've been appreciated.

If you guys are willing to load a non Windows (*x etc ) OS on the laptop, this is important. HP does not support "retail operating systems" on this laptop, and on their products in general. So, you might have problems using Bluetooth, Wireless LAN (?) , and Card reader. I have installed Fedora Core 3, and I was not able to use all three of those as of now. Actally, I haven't tried hard enough to find drivers etc. If one of you finds it, please do let me know. The remote control, however was working fine with Fedora Core 3 :-)

( Folowing info is provided for information only. I do not endorse any such activity, but if you feel compelled, try thinking that you may lose warranty on your computer, or even damage hardware on imitating my deeds :) Be very sure what you are doing before you are following me! )

There's something more I did to it, that i'd like to discuss!!

The typical full load battery time of this baby is around:

2 hours 5 minutes with the screen brightness minimum! (running at 1.7GHz, @1.340 V, loaded).

3 Hours, 20 minutes with the screen brightness minimum! (running at 600 MHz, @0.988 V, not loaded).

But I was able to decrease the CPU core voltage as low as 0.924V (@1.7 GHz) and yet recieved a wonderful stability. This was done to conserve battery power mostly, while preserving performane :)

While running Prime95 only (onlu CPU Loaded) The battery backup (@ 100% load, @1.7GHz @0.924 V, screen brightness minimum, BT, WLESS, and screen savers off) is 2 hours 50 minutes and @ 0 %load (except for OS load), @600 MHz @0.924 V, other conditions same, the battery lasted for 4 hours, 15 mnutes :)

/Start: Added Later/

BTW, the minimum voltage required for this processor is 0.700 V @ 600 MHz. For times, when you just need to keep it on, like leaving it on for some downloads.

/End: Added Later/

On other benchmarking tests I found the hard disk to be performing nicely, compared to other components (memory, CPU etc), even after the SMART issue. That surely leaves me happy.

I have recently purchases a 29" TV and sure enough, I'd like to use the s-video out, so this baby's going to her parents next weekend.

Amazing Laptop for Rs 52,000/-
Jun 10, 2006 10:49 PM 6735 Views

I was Planning to get a notebook for my personal Use and checked out most of the Brands, Like Lenovo, HCL, Dell , Toshiba, Sony Vaio, Acer, Compaq, Sahara, almost all the brands available in India.

But I finally Decided to buy this Baby, Hp Pavillion DV1615TS on 6 th May, 2006,

Some IMP Tech Specs of my Baby:

Proc - Intel® Pentium® M Processor 735A_1.7GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400MHz FSB

O/S - Win XP Home

RAM - 512MB (1 x 512MB) DDR SDRAM 333MHz, Upgradeable to 2 GB. (Shud have been DDR2 as its faster than DDR)

Proc cache -- 2MB Level-2 Cache (which is why its real fast)

HDD: 80GB (5400 rpm) Seagate.

Optical Drive - Dual Layer DVD±RW/±R

Graphics Card - Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (with up to 128MB shared with >=512MB memory)

Integrated Devices - Integrated 10/100 LAN, Intel® PRO/Wireless 802.11 b/g integrated WLAN, integrated Bluetooth

Display - 14" colour WXGA+ BrightView (Amazing Clarity)

6-cell Lithium-Ion battery ( I get almost 3 Hrs Backup )

Ports - (1) 6-in-1 Digital Media Reader slot, (1) IEEE 1394 port, (1) S-videoport, (1) VGA port, (1) Notebook Expansion Slot, (1)Headphone/Line-out, (2) External Microphone, (1) AC power adapter, (1)RJ-11, (1) RJ-45, (3) USB 2.0 ports

Speakers - Altec Lansing branded speakers (Sound is Low with Quickplay but Manageable, with other apps its good e.g Windows Media player)

Its really very Light - 2.44kg

I got an earphone (I matched it with my Ipod earphones and its as good as this) and a Remote with this laptop for Hp Quick Play, Quickplay lets you play movies or songs on this notebook with booting the system.

This notebook also has 2 slots for earphones so 2 people can connect headphones/earphones to listen to the audio.

The System BIOS also has a Feature of Testing the HDD and the Memory, which anyone can test by getting into the BIOS (F10 will get you in the BIOS,Most systems get into the BIOS by F2) > Advanced > HDD self Test > Memory Self Test. ( You May not get this feature if you do not upgrade the BIOS version from the hp support website )

The above mentioned features makes an amazing laptop, I Myself work for Dell but planned to Buy HP as I know the Quality of Dell Inspiron Laptops, If you really want to go for Dell, please choose the Latitude Series, Latitude systems are more stable than Inspiron's. Inspiron Laptops are More of Plasticky Nature.

Well coming back to the Point, I would recommend this laptop anyday, as the features are really good, and the best part is I installed Oracle on this system and have run huge queries on this system, and it handles the queries with ease, though it gets a little WARM, when the queries are run.

This System also features Bluetooth and a DVD-DL Burner, had the memory been DDR2 on this system, it wud have rocked more.

My notebook came with a Seagate HDD, which is surprisingly very quiet, the system boots in about 15 Secs, which is FAST. and the Battery is real good, I get close to 3 hrs of battery backup, even when I run the queries, which is amazing.

I would recommend this laptop to students and people who want mobility and speed.

Its been only 15 days since I got this laptop, I will come back with another review once I get to know my notebook better. I have rated this laptop as Very Good, just because It does not have DDR2 memory.

Hope this review provides enough info for you to make a decision in buying this laptop.

This is an amazing laptop for the 54,500/- that I bought it for. It features an Intel Centrino 1.7 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD +RW, 6-1 media card reader, wireless lan, bluetooth and a kwel brightview 14.1 WXGA screen. Performance is very good. The altec lansing speakers built in provide a really good sound although the volume is a little low.

I checked the screen with DPB to find it absolutely flawless!!! I also setup Gentoo on it and it going really well. Gentoo wiki has a whole page dedicated to the Pavillion DV1000 series! I could run XP Home with winamp reading off an mp3 cd for 2 hours roughly. That's not immensely impressive battery life but it suffices my purposes. The DVD Playback is very impressive but I haven't burnt a CD/DVD yet. All in all a terrific option for the price it comes at.
