Mumbai India
Reliance is hardly reliable
Sep 27, 2007 06:58 PM

I'd taken a powersurfer connection in March 2005 out of sheer compulsion as there was no other broadband service provider in my area at the time (Andheri east). It worked well for the first month or so, but then I started having problems with very frequent downtimes. For no apparent reason, it used to conk off for a day or for several hours every now and then (almost twice or thrice a week). My job requires me to work late at night almost every day and coordinate with colleagues in US, so any downtime is very inconvenient.

To avoid these hassles, I was forced to buy a Tata Indicom wireless connection also, which is superb and very reliable but obviously can't match the speed of a broadband connection. I usually buy a prepaid card for a speed of 256 kpbs, but the speed is always significantly lower than the promised levels.

Since the last 6 months or so, it has become much worse with their connection going down for several months at end. Any pleas to compensate for the lost time, always fall on deaf ears. First you have to wait on the phone for at least 30 min. before you can speak to someone at the call centre, which has all useless people with no knowledge about networking. Then they tell you to send e-mails to their helpdesk, which again elicits no response.

Last 2 prepaid cards, which I bought with a validity of 2 months each have expired with only 3 days of actual usage. The standard response from their engineer is "fibre optic outage". If a Company like Reliance can't provide reliable service for months at end, I really feel like dragging them to consumer court. Now I'm switching to MTNL broadband, which I hope will be better than this.

This also means that almost Rs.5500 that I'd paid for getting the connection besides the Rs.1800 that I paid for the prepaid cards during the last 4 months go down the drain.

They're really cheating their customers and I've sworn never to go to Reliance for any pdt or service in future. They just don't care abt the customers and service levels mean nothing to them.

Broadnet upgrade - download speed
Dec 08, 2006 12:24 PM

Everyone is complaining about Powersurfer.net. If you are a heavy internet/download user like myself, this company offer's the best in all fields (connection, cost, service, etc) overall compared to others. The only problem is to get thoir connection in your Location. Never go to Leap Telecom (agent) in Bandra(W) as the person (Robert) will give you all excuses to not take up Powersurfer. Leap Telecom is also an agent for Iqara.

To the main point, Is there anyone you know who is still on the very first old pacakage (Rs. 15000 for 3 years). My Friend who stays nearby got his upgraded to Broadnet to increase speed, but had to forfeit 2 months of his connection. 3 months have passed and I've not yet receive this offer/connection. Helpline says that this is going in Phases (new fibre optic cables) througfhout Bandra (W) and cannot give a time frame. If anyone has gotr this upgrade, what is the actual download speed under the upgraded connection.

Also, To all those on the 64kbps, 128kbps and 256kbps packages - please let me know what is your actual download speed. MTNL triband is all fake regarding download spped as everyone (in Mumbai) I know can only get a max speed of 45 kbps. MTNL wbesite says to divide 256kbps by 8 to get the actual usage. This is why I like to know your (powersrufer users) actual download speeds.

Bad Internet Service
Jun 04, 2006 07:26 PM

This is the very worst internet connection ever. when I ask for 24 hr internet I want 24 hours online, however their service is extremely poor, to register a complaint, first call call centres where they r extremely clueless ppl who prolly dont know what internet spells like, they will give u the standard call of duty, do this do that, we have gotten ur

complaint...24 hrs for service ppl to come. now 24 hrs may not be much for many ppl but what if ur internet connection stops working once a week, will u tolerate this?

their franchisee is also extremely pathetic, the engineers rude and cheeky.mostly when u call em to complaint, they have a standard excuse, internet is down in andheri, how beleivable is that? considering when I called a friend in the same buildin g he had no problem like that,

suppose we consider their engineers, they have the most clueless idiots, who are very cheecky and all that they do is look around windows trying to find a fault, I can do better than them.

now I had heard a lot of good abt this connection and thats y I agreed to pay for a year in advance. now iam stuck with it for another year, after a payment of 7000 rupees.

i hate reliance, will never buy another thing with reliance written on it. their phones, mobiles blah blah, all pathetic. iam being looted and cant do anything about it.

i bought this connection from a certain leap telecom which sounded reasonable at 725 a month or so. however since jan 2005, till now, the internet connection has conked off atleast 40-50 times, and once at a stretch it did not work for 15 days at a stretch

when we complained to the franchisee, they ''understood our problem , and said not everyone faces this kind of problem'' I ask u, if no one else faces it, y should i? why cant it be checked by one of their smarter engineers (if they have any)

also when the franchisee, this leap telecom (bandra, mumbai) sets up a new system of usage of username and password, they dont bother to inform us. are we supposed to assume such things?

i hate reliance, will never buy another thing with reliance written on it. their phones, mobiles blah blah, all pathetic. iam being looted and cant do anything about it.

Reliance Powersurfer.net
Apr 23, 2005 01:52 PM

India is considered an IT superpower but the ISP segment in India leaves still a lot to be desired.

My internet usage is 24 * 7. I generally require to download several MBs of stuff daily and my box is almost always on.

Things that had earlier attracted me to the Reliance ''broadband'' (does not provide ''the'' speed capable of a broadband) service were:

  1. unlimited downloads.

  2. relatively cheap rates.

  3. OFC

  4. 64Kbps uncapped(can be higher)

Rate of Rs:14700 for 2 years before April 2005.

Before, this financial year i.e April 01 2005, I was very impressed with the service(it deserved a 4 star), as it really provided uncapped speed upto 80kbps and upload speeds were also good. The connectivity was reliable with little downtime,

However, since April 07 2005, Reliance have capped bandwidth speeds by using the software cyberoam 24online for capping bandwidth speeds. With Reliance now there is no possibility of getting a speed higher than 64 kbps. Additionally the speeds received with 24online is erratic to say the least. The 64kbps capped limit is never reached and effectively, I have received a speed of a maximum of only 48kbps.

The new rates have decreased (along with decreased speed and capped connection).

The new rates can be found at,

https://powersurfer.net/residentinternet.html#RIT

Support is average, The support call number always plays the busy message and even when you get the number, the dudes/gals there are not very knowledgable.

All in all, this service is not good enough if you are expecting good consistent high download speeds. Poor speed does not make unlimited downloads a pleasure.

You may try purchasing a 128kbps line, but I doubt you will ever touch those speeds.

However, still, unlimited downloads makes this a better choice over others. This service is good for someone with high surfing and limited downloads needs.

Unlimited Net
Mar 23, 2003 01:10 AM

I just took an internet connection from Powersurfer.net just about two weeks back. Everybody who has written reviews seem to be complaining about a low speed, as long as it is better than a dial-up and has no download limits (like some ISP's), I highly recommend it.

Download speeds I have received have been exactly double the speed I was getting when I was on a dialup. I would recommend using a third party download software like Getright or Netants[this s/w downloads at thrice the speed of Getright ofcourse you would have suspend web browsing to let the download complete;-)]

It works really great with a Windows XP, with a Windows 98 it gives frequent disconnections. It also gives you access to other computers on the same network if they are sharing files. File transfer rate from the computers on the network is unbelievable. The downside to this is you could end up sharing the same viruses the other user may have. A updated antivirus s/w is a must.

The 24 hour helpdesk is also helpful, I called them at 3 in the night and got a guy who helped me out.

Pathetic.. rock bottom
Jan 11, 2003 04:31 AM

Jan '03: the title says it all. I just got it installed a few hrs back and I already hate it. waste of money. don't ever go for it. this is not BROADBAND as they claim. Its supp 2 be slightly faster than dial up... BUT IT IS NOT. rediff takes 2 mins, yahoo games doesn't work, msn may work if u r lucky. just don't believe a word they say. this is one thing u don't need. use dial up of vsnl and smile.

Sep '05: I had paid up for 3 yrs so have been suffering since then. When MTNL launched their broadband service I took that up even though 11-12 months of my Powersurfer connection still remain. For most of these 3 years I made atleast 7-8 calls to them to compalin for no connection, bad connection, etc, etc. Previously when it worked I could do a coice chat but since last 3 months it has gotten worse and now I can't even do a voice chat (because of which I took MTNL tri band .. its awesome)

Do not ever consider Powersurfer. Its more like Powerless Sufferer.

Iron out your snags guys!!
Mar 30, 2002 09:23 PM

Being a major freak of the net, was I happy when I read the ad of powersurfer. Here was something that would not make me cry every time I received a phone bill, and the downloads would be jet-speed!!

After installation, I have faced intermittent problems. But to be fair to these guys, whenever I called, the bloke at the other end was polite and attentive, and had a sensible explanation. I am happy with the speed of the downloads, and connectivity.I hope it increases (fingers crossed)! So I guess lets give these guys a chance to 'iron out the snags'!! Apart from that, great going fellows.

Gone to the dogs !
Mar 24, 2002 03:31 PM

Good guys to begin with, but irresponsible is an understatement on BSES powersurfer.

Half the guys there do not know what their counterparts are doing.

An application form submitted along with a cheque of 22000/- for 3 yrs access was happily encashed and a promise made that installation would be made within 21 days.

Thats when the whole sad story began. The application form itself got lost. Later when the guys did find it, the sent some instructions to the installation dept to go ahead and do the installation. Here miscommunication rules supreme.

Mr.Abhay Mane who was in charge here for Bandra area was contacted umpteen times and all he could give was assurances. Most of the time you couldnt get through to him because the epabx system installed in BSES is either faulty or the chap is not on his seat and there is no one else who can respond in his absence. We must have made not less than a hundred telephone calls and must have been called back by them only twice !

And that too, just to request us to bear with them, because sometimes the form was lost, sometimes they were out of stock for the racks which were required to install, or their Lancomp guys did not get instructions - all in all a big rigmarole - a circus full of clowns - and no sense of responsibility at all. No apologies-No retributions-No form of compensation- and now No dynamic IP without which voice over IP call cannot be made and ofcourse before I forget- No information forthcoming.

And lots of promises and assurances but all potholed in unexpected difficulties and problems-most of them concerning lack of transparency, miscommunication and above all NO SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY !

I dont know where the buck stops, but I do hope this message wakes them up from their stupor.

Even higher up in their staff, there is no pulling up of socks-still the same lack lustre treatment is meted out -Mr. Prakash, Mr.Deepak, Mr.Saraf and all the others whom we have e-mailed have rarely responded nor been goaded in to action.

The only reason why we havent approached the press with all this is because we still wanted to give them one last chance to improve.

It's the worse cablenet u could ever go in for. I tested for speed on a regular day at evening time and found it to be just 16kbps. I can't even listen to a 28kbps online radio.

Their helpline number has a peon who only speaks marathi and i'm supposed to be telling him about complaints regarding netspeed, ping not replying and my outlook express not working. At the end of each complaint all this peon is programmed to say is ''mala kai mahiti nahi''.

I hav'nt yet bn issued a proper id i.e. user@bses.net

I have no choice but to continue suffering for a whole year coz like an idiot I subscribed to them for an entire year.
