SONY 285E Problem
Dec 01, 2006 11:42 AM 6745 Views

Dear Freinds,

I am using SONY 285E handycam from last 2 years, I am very much satisfied with the same.

I found this handycam is really nice at this price. This must be the largest selling model of handycam in india. Only thing you have to make sure is complete knowledge of operation. It has lot of features. I could able to create CDROMs from the video. Thats bit difficult and very slow.

Few days back, I found while transffering video and creating CDROM, SOUND does not get transffered? I hv tried re-installing SONY softwares and tried on variety of CDROM / DVDR and CDRWs but all in vain. I have DVD Writer on my PC with WINXP as OS.

Currently, I found one problem getting message of "Re-Insert cassette" Although I tried inserting it multiple times with different cassettes it gives the same error message. Can anyone help me out with this? Let me know reliable and economical repair center in mumbai.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance for informative reply.

Unable to download from camcorder dcr-trv 285e
Nov 25, 2006 07:04 PM 5081 Views

I have a new camcorder but I have been unable to download any videos even after installing the accompanying CD.I don't know what could be the problem.I am using a USB cable.Could some please help. The picture package software cannot see the camcorder, I have tried the who afternoon to instal all parts of the CD buit to no avail.

Its a good thing for sony to have provided the software but I would love it if they provided a carry case even if at a small price. This is because when you buy a bag separately it has got another company's label and I'd rather have a sony labeled bag.

I would recommend the camera to anyone, its lighting is good though can only be used for things very close to the camera. The zom is good enough and was of use during the shooting I did a while ago. Thanks

Dont buy sony
Nov 05, 2006 11:15 PM 4991 Views

i bought the camera in a hurry 2 years back. to begin with it was much overprised. within 2 months, the prices halved. in 2 years the camera broke down twice. first time I had to spend rs 2500. this time a small plastic button at the back is not working. but without it, the cam wont start. but they are asking rs 3500 this time! are they robbers?? !

even other wise, the cam quality was bad. the battery at the rear is not very tight, as a result, frequently the cam shows no battery is attached to it ! it 's a pain to brouse the menu.

the software supplied with the cam is horrible. did they use school kid to build it up? disgusting.

its resoliution is very bad. the newer ones which came just within 6 months had much higher resolutions.

i'll never buy a sony again.

Sony Handycam D8 DCR - TRV285E D-8 Digital 8
Aug 08, 2006 01:53 PM 18290 Views

Hi all...

I am not a professional photographer, but like to use cameras...With limited ability and knowledge, I still am a good photographer & can do wonders with photos on computer...

A long time dream was to own a handycam...finally got Sony Handycam,

DCR-TRV285E or Digital8 or D8 (Model Number is correct, nicknames are of same Model or similar models).

When I decided to purchase, I was looking for a handycam with ability to connect on PC for data transfer.

I went through details of HAndycams with memorycards, direct to DVD, etc. Could have afforded handycams with memory cards, but affordable memory cards come with less memory (Something Rs.1500 for M.Crd which records 60minutes video), the M.Cards which had larger memory were too costly for my wallet.

So finally I found this D8, moderatly priced around 18000. I will list down Cons, Pro's & Troubleshooting now (Please remember am not technical expert in this field) :

Cons :

1.Bit heavy (Ok for this price, and u get used to this)

2.Cannot srote PHOTO as JPG. (U can capture frame Image as 640 x 480 resolution by any Video Editing Tool like Windows Movie Maker, Pinnacle Studio, etc.)

4.Default battery approx.90minutes with LCD, approx.120 minutes without LCD...Note ZOOM, etc reduces balance battery time.

5.Sony's Extra Orignal BAtteries comes Costly.

6.While transferring data to PC, whole cassette or the scenes which u want to transferr to PC has to be played.

7.It takes huge time and LArge Hard-disk space to transfer data to pc, and finally get it converted to a VCD (MPEG) Format.

  1. Nearly useless softwares with limited HELP Information in CD which comes along with this Handycam.

9.Free Handycam bag is small, means conjested for required accessories. (Adapter,Wire,Cam to TV Wire, Cassettes, etc)

Pro's :

1.Amazing, Just Amazing Picture and Sterio-Sound Clarity (12 - 16 bit)

2.Clear Optical Zoom, and more than OK Digital Zoom (Tripod Suggested)

3.Cheap but Effective Media - D8/Hi8 Cassettes @Rs.125/- for 60 minutes recording in SP Mode.

4.Well Positioned Buttons for recording ease.

5.Good Easy Handycam Function.

6.Good Functions like NightShot,Flash Light & Good Options Like Backlit, Various Picture Effects & Modes.

6 Pro's vs 9 Con's, but don't at all go by this numerical comparision.

This baby is Paisa Vasool for the rate vs Quality which U get it.

Troubleshoot : (My Experiences)

1.Default battery is insufficient, try practising shooting with LCD Closed and not necessary to hold viewfinder near to eye, with a little hang of this cam, U can easily shoot zoom with viewfinder 4-5 inches away from eye. Or else get a new Long Life Battery depending on your requirement and budget.

Learning above technique is always better as under bright SunLight, LCD is hardly visible.

2.Did first ever video shooting for my son's birthday, length @20 minutes. Decided to convert to CD. Loaded Driver (Windows XP suggested ** Infact this is only alternative for huge GIF file that generates for Data Transfer)

Connected to USB port, SwOn PC, after launching Windows XP, SwOn Camera (Pls Connect to Adapter as it takes time and battery)

(SwOn camera first & then SwOn PC may damage your CameraAlso Dont Disconnect while data transfer is in Progress to avoid regretting)

Tried to RECORD from Windows Movie Maker, but it was was converting in 320 x 120 (Something like this small) size..Did R&D on various resolutions (But required option for VCD resolution was missing.

So pressed BURN VCD Option on HandyCam, after selecting normal menu options on PC & Cam (Save Directory, etc), finally data transfer started. It is transferred in segments of 10minutes each.

First 10 minutes was copied in Runtime (means in 10 minutes) & then my PC (P4, moderate 256mb RAM, basic Graphic Card) took nearly 50 minutes to make a GIF File (Approx. 4GB), and then converting it to MPEG format & finally after repeated same procedure for balance 10 minutes video transfer.

2 big hours to convert a video of 20 minutes to VCD format and that too while converting through USB connection, Video Quality was PAthetic & Cheap.

I lost heart that day and my wife questioned my decision and took fun in taunting me ;-), Only married people knows this pain.

Anyway I dint loose heart, for next 2 days, keeping all office work aside, I did research on net for this Issue, got solutions in segments scattered on net.

On one fine Sunday morning, immediately after my Salary I got Fifewire Card (Some IEEE 3314, aisa hi kuch naam hain) which with Installation & Firewire (4pin-Handycam to 6pin-PC) cable costed me Rs.1050/-

(Pls Note Sony suggests 4pin to 4pin cable but in my case 4pin to 6 pin cable works perfectly fine cos I connect Cable first, then start PC and then Handycam.)

I had loaded Pinnacle Studio 9 software by then, Enhanced my RAM to 512mb, and had freed 15 GB Dedicated space (E:) on my Hard-Disk (Segmented C,D & E) in And then I started transferring data from Handycam to PC.

And whoaa...This was it, my same 20minutes video was converted as it is with near equal video clarity, minus sound disturbance & finally CD writing everything in just 25 minutes...That means nearly in RealTime...

After that I did many trial and errors, Converted 7 Cassettes of 60 minutes each, Did various things on video with Pinnacle Studio, Got advice cum notice from wife to marry my Comouter etc etc...But thats a different Story...

So friends facing similar problems with Sony D8 handycam, don't loose heart, you have taken a good Decision on Owning this Handycam and are getting back what u paid, for high-end features, pay more and get high-end camera ^o^

...Remember, Solutions are born before Problems...

Happy Movie Making...:)

DEMO OF SHAME BY SONY INDIA
May 21, 2006 03:01 PM 7263 Views

FLASHBACK: The day my elder brother's wedding got fixed I was on cloud nine. I made all the arrangements so as to able me to attend his wedding in UK. As my parents wont be able to attend the wedding due to certain reasons, I thought of why not buy a video camera so as to show them the glimpses of the ceremonies what they wont be able to witness personally. After a consulting my peers and taking into consideration my budget and requirement, I bought the SONY DCR-TRV285E from Sony World, Ghumar Mandi, Ludhiana. The reason of not purchasing from Moga was that the Moga dealer didn’t offer any kind of discount over the MRP. The purchase was done on 15 May 2006, Monday, by making full cash payment. The dealer informed me that within a day or two the SONY trained guy would reach at my place and provide with the FULL HOME DEMO of the Handycam. As I live at Moga, which is 66 km away from Ludhiana, I asked the dealer (I guess he was MR. TARUN cell no 98154819980 office no 0161-2400432) that is it feasible for him to do so? He replied a big affirmative and said it might take a day or two to do so. Later he checked out with other guys at SONY and said that the demo would be done by 19 May 2006, Friday. Also the demo guy would inform me ahead of time before making the visit. Gladly I informed him about my residence and contact numbers. I cancelled my appointments that I had with my tailor for the dress trial and stayed home so as to make sure that the guy who would come traveling 66 km wouldn’t find the home locked. But Friday came and went by, nothing happened. I called up the guys at Ludhiana. They said they will call me back and confirmed that the demo would be done by 20 May 2006, Saturday, for sure. They even apologized for the delay. Cool! I re-postponed my tailor’s appointment and waited for him till 1 pm. Again a call at Ludhiana. This time a lady answered the call. She committed that the guy is in Moga today and I can expect him any moment. When I asked her to provide me the details (i.e. Name n Cell no)of the guy who is their visiting engineer, she said that they guy will be sent from the SONY SERVICE CENTRE and the SONY WORLD has no jurisdiction in that matter!! But this time they fixed the appointment at 5 pm (My God! I never know poor guys at SONY work till so late!!!) At 5:20 pm I again call them back and demanded an explanation. This time MR. TARUN obliged me by providing the name and cell no of the so called engineer MR. ASHWINI (cell no 9855604338). I call this fellow and discover that he is on the way from Ludhiana to Moga and has yet reached in the midway!! Another quarter hour passed! Finally MR ASHWANI enters my place! Whoa!! Celebration time! I seat the gentleman and after refreshments we move to the working area. I show him the handy cam. He takes the equipment into hand and switched the power on… (I did some of the preliminary settings after I spent two days waiting for him and reading the instruction manual)… He gets shaky! There is sweat on his forehead! He declares the instrument as faulty one, as LCD display is all Black!! This time I request him to kindly remove the lens cap! Which he obediently does and LO, the display appears. He then starts fondling with the buttons of the cam, still jittery though! I pop him up a few queries 1. What is the difference between HI 8 and D8 cassettes? 2. What is the difference between SP and LP mode? 3. How do I transfer my recorded stuff to my pc through USB? The guy makes a CONFESSION that he is basically a TV Demo guy and knows nothing about the HANDYCAM! All he can tell me is how to record with the equipment!! For the finer details SONY will send another guy. Else I should talk to his senior. He asks for my cell and dials a no and some MR GARG is online (later on I learn he is the head of SONY SERVICE CENTRE, MODERN ELECTRONICS, SCF-1 MODEL TOWN EXT. MARKET, LUDHIAN cell no 9872634283 office no 0161-2454383). He answers my first two queries, of which I am very much satisfied. But to the third one he says I must visit them personally. I asked him cant they provide the FULL HOME DEMO of the Handycam? He says NO! For the queries to be addressed fully I must visit him in his office at Ludhiana with my equipment. I take his contact and call the Sony World, Ghumar Mandi, Ludhiana and demand an explanation to their claim of providing FULL HOME DEMO stands NULL & VOID as the service centre refused a true and FULL HOME DEMO. They do some kind of discussion amongst themselves and hang-up with the promise of reverting back in a few minutes. I call them up again after 45 minutes. This time MR. NARINDER (no cell no known) holds the front and claims that the case has been referred to MR. UMAKANT, the head of the North Division of SONY, and he will call me up by 22 or 23 May 2006, Monday or Tuesday, and listen to my problem and fix an appointment at my place to solve my problem!! It would be a surprise if this claim of SONY WORLD also proves to be true!! PRESENT: I have read the manual and understood many of the features myself. Now I sit in my room and wonder: 1. Were the things I asked so complicated that Head of North Division SONY, MR. UMAKANT has to intervene to solve this issue? 2. Aren’t the Home Demo guys supposed to be well versed with each and every function of the equipment concerned? 3. And, in second place why did they send such an ignorant guy? 4. Why did the SONY WORLD, GHUMAR MANDI, LUDHIANA claim that they would be able to provide me with a full home demo of the equipment when the jurisdiction of the matter lies with SONY SERVICE CENTRE? 5. Who is responsible for this harassment? Who pays for the 48 hours and more lost waiting for the Demo? Besides the cost of all calls made to various SONY people!! 6. Will I ever in my life recommend SONY products to any one else? 7. Why did the claim made by the SONY WORLD refuted by the SONY SERVICE CENTRE? 8. If I was the one who was supposed to visit the SONY SERVICE CENTRE for the Demo, why I wasn’t told this on the date of purchase? I was in the city itself and I would have done that there and then! 9. Why did I buy a SONY?? 10. Why did I buy a SONY?? 11. Why did I buy a SONY?? 12. Why did I buy a SONY?? 13. Why did I buy a SONY??

My dad. Oh! He has always been fond of cameras. Infact he is fond of photography. So its a natural thing that he has a collection of most beautiful photos captured by him.(Hey he is not a photographer.... Just joking).

Last November, we had planned to go to Manali. Infact Dad had already visited the place before, he wanted to take the whole family on a dream excursion. Now, its obvious that u will always carry a camera with u on a holiday. We were already having a Minolta camera with us. But this time, Dad just made up his mind to purchase a camcorder. As they say that u should not delay a good work. So after a survey of only an hour, he bought this masterpiece for about Rs. 17000. It was really a worth of our money.

Slowly and steadily, I began to explore this trifle in which we can capture the world. There r a whole lot of functions. Apart from the white night lamp, it has a night shot to view things in a complete darkness. It has a perfect digital zoom ranging from 20x to a whopping 990x. It can even capture the smallest particles in a large range. Infact the zoom helped me see the craters and even the black spots on the moon very clearly.

Coming to the picture quality. To describe in one word- its SPLENDID. Other functions include fader(to add transition effects), backlight (to enlighten a dark face of somebody) and focus (to clearly see the blurred images caused by som external agencies).

There are a whole lot of Photo effects and Programs for any landscape or situation. This gives u a perfect picture quality for a perfect situation. We can even assign titles in different fonts for various situatons.

The sound quality- its stupendous, marvellous and magnificient. The recorded sound is stereophonic. Some singing competitions I won have been captured in it and when v see the video, v actually feel that I am singing live.

There is an option available for steady shot. Thru this, we can capture still photos. Of course we can't print them, but some beauties of nature can be enjoyed using this steadyshot. And what else do u want at a reasonable price. The camcorder with the option of printing the photos costs over 32000. Moreover we have a Camera and we capture the still moments thru it.

So the bottom line is that u can't get a better value for ur money. My advice- Purchase it now.

Beginner Level

I happened to purchase a Camcorder from Sony - CCD-TRV285E for personal use for just Rs 16500/- at Bangalore after going through a lot of reviews on the Net. It is a good buy for beginners level and the price is also very decent. The actual cost was Rs 14500/- and I swapped the existing battery for a two hour backup becos of which I had to pay Rs 16500/- which is inclusive of taxes. Functions wise, this model is great as it has 990x digital zoom and 20x optical zoom. It has PC connectivity and the setup as very easy. It has a steady shot feature which is not available in the lower end models. This is a D8 model ie. Digital 8 and the clarity is better compared to the Hi8 models. I will give more details once I am thorough with the operations. I got the camera only 24 hours ago.
