T’s amazing how far single-cylinder engine design has come. The introduction of the modern four-stroke motocross racer in the 1990s was the main driving force behind development, while the advent of the Moto3 class in Grand Prix roadracing in 2012 ushered in even more advancements. KTM was one of the first to take on the challenge of creating a modern four-stroke single streetbike, the Austrian dirtbike manufacturer introducing the Duke 620 way back in 1994. Twenty-two years and four different design iterations later comes the 2016 KTM 690 Duke.

The previous 690 Duke was the most powerful production single to date, but the new model is even stronger. Two key design elements have enabled KTM to reach an even higher level of power and smoothness: the introduction of KTM’s Ride Mode technology along with a revamping of more than 50 percent of the LC4 motor’s mechanical components.

This latest Duke is geared toward maximum performance, but it’s also designed to be user-friendly for beginning riders. Even the chassis, which retains the same lightweight stainless chromoly-steel trellis-type frame as previous Dukes, received some subtle-yet-significant changes to improve handling. The new bike also gets some slight tweaks to its styling while retaining the minimalist, narrow lines so beloved by Duke enthusiastsKTM put a lot of effort into smoothing out the motor. For starters, there’s a new cylinder head with a second balance shaft to reduce vibration. The intake valves run directly off the single camshaft, while the exhaust valves are actuated by a rocker arm. A new, more oversquare cylinder design with a bigger bore(up 3mm to 105mm) and shorter stroke(down 4.5mm to 80mm) lets the engine rev 1000 rpm higher. A new crank assembly features a more compact, lightweight, plain-bearing connecting rod holding a forged piston. The addition of a resonator chamber positioned directly after the new Keihin 50mm throttle body is equally important in controlling throttle response. All of these features, in conjunction with a new dual-spark ignition with different maps for each plug, have played a role in the motor’s newfound smoothness. Even the redesigned, lightweight muffler plays a role in added performance, as well as noise reduction.

I have this bike. its amazing. The base model with the Track Pack is very good and will probably satisfy the majority of riders. The adjustable suspension is largely geared towards those who will run track days on the Duke. That said, advanced riders who know what they're doing will miss the ability to tweak their suspension to suit road conditions. Other bits, like the slip-on and the rearsets that I didn't mention in the review, can be bought from the Duke catalog. You could also pop for the fancy triple clamp, but I don't think it offers any functional difference. you must purchase

The KTM 690 Duke is the latest generation in KTM's line of midrange single-cylinder engine supermoto or naked motorcycles that began with the 1994 609 cc(37.2 cu in) displacement Duke 620 or Duke I, followed by the 1998 625 cc(38.1 cu in) Duke 640 or Duke II, followed by the 654 cc(39.9 cu in) Duke III, and finally the 690 cc(42 cu in) Duke IV made since 2012. Both the Duke III and Duke IV are called the 690 Duke. The 690 Duke is the most powerful production single-cylinder motorcycle.[1]

The Duke was KTM's first street bike, and first supermoto, having previously made only off-road and racing motorcycles. In 1998 KTM introduced the 640 Supermoto, so the Duke line became a more street oriented standard or streetfighter, while retaining some off-road characteristics like a relatively long suspension travel. Initially the Duke was KTM's entry level street bike, but later KTM partnered with Bajaj Auto to produce the 125 Duke, 200 Duke, and 390 Duke in India, placing the 600 cc class Dukes in the middle of their range. In 2005, KTM introduced the Super Duke to expand the range above the middle Duke, initially 999 cc(61.0 cu in) and later growing to 1,301 cc

With the 2012 Duke KTM have made a bike that can give an experienced rider the thrill they are looking for whilst being a more usable package with a broader appeal to a wider spectrum of riders than the previous version. The Duke is spot on for commuting and hammering down twisty country roads, where bigger, more powerful bikes would struggle. If you want a pure, no-nonsense bike, the 690 Duke should be top of your list.

Bike is simpily bater smooth driving cuttings is good. no more orders I differ in the breaks department. It has saved me quite a few times from hitting a pedestrian who came to the road all of a sudden and also from crashing because of the panic hard breaking once on my D390. It can be because of the combination of break, abs and metz tyre, However, it did it beautifully.like just in the morning when in started my bike for the first time in that day it showed High Coolant Temprature nd I was surprised that its been 10 hours I rided it nd what the hell is it showing me infact I was not able to start d engine self was not working nd 2nd it shoped showin me that in which gear I am driving it nd 3rd the gear shift Indicator is not working

Design and Style

Give it a look and you can easily identify it’s a KTM bike. The exposed unique trellis frame and engine of this bike gives it a macho look. This bike will feature split seats placed on its rear cowl. This attractive rear cowl will also feature the LED tail light of this bike. The extended rear fender of 690 Duke originates just below this tail light which carries the number plate and side indicators of this bike.

Acceleration and Performance

After driving this engine, you won’t believe if it’s a single cylinder engine. It’s a highly refined machine which feels like any other four cylinder engine in terms of power and smoothness. The early building of torque and power is the biggest USP of this engine. Moreover, it is extremely light weight at 149.5 kgs, which helps this bike to achieve the best in class power tor weight ratio. The torque arrives as early as 5500rpm which along with short gear ratios helps this bike to be a ripper. It enjoys instant throttle reaction which proves to be a boon in city traffic.

Two key design elements have enabled KTM to reach an even higher level of power and smoothness: the introduction of KTM’s Ride Mode technology along with a revamping of more than 50 percent of the LC4 motor’s mechanical components. To test the new Duke, KTM invited the world’s motorcycling press to the Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa. There we spent a day riding around the spectacular island of Gran Canaria, which offered fast and slow sections of road as well as a variety of surfaces.

As far as comfort goes, the new 690 Duke fit my 5-foot-10 frame just fine. The controls were easy to reach and I was able to put my feet flat on the ground. We started off on the highway, which I suspected might be painful, but I was wrong—the single purrs as smoothly as a multi. Throttle response at freeway speeds is very precise with no lurching or uneven revving, and there is plenty of acceleration even in top gear. Part of the engine overhaul was to smooth out the torque curve from 4, 000-7, 000 rpm and the engineers hit the mark.

After hammering down the coast road we reached the mountains, and maneuvering on these tight-and-twisty roads is where the Duke shines. The revised chassis offers exceptional control and feel, and power delivery is spot-on. Response from the new ride-by-wire throttle system is smooth and predictable. KTM claims the 690 churns out 73 horsepower(a 7 percent increase from last year) and torque is up to 55 lb.-ft.(a 6 percent increase). That may not seem like much, but for a single it’s amazing. The 2016 KTM 690 Duke comes in two colors: the classic KTM orange or white. There’s an array of Power Up Parts plus the Track Pack, which offers the same traction control, Supermoto ABS, and Motor Slip Regulator(MSR) that comes on the Duke R sold in Europe.

KTM put a lot of effort into smoothing out the motor. All of these features, in conjunction with a new dual-spark ignition with different maps for each plug, have played a role in the motor’s newfound smoothness. Even the redesigned, lightweight muffler plays a role in added performance, as well as noise reduction.

Chassis-wise the Duke strikes a fine balance between aggressive handling and comfortable cruising. This was achieved by lowering the swingarm pivot 4mm and reducing the steering offset from 32 to 28mm, which increased trail from 115 to 122mm. The WP suspension consisting of a 43mm inverted fork and a linkage-actuated gas-charged shock worked just fine considering the only adjustment is for shock spring preload. Whichever you are, you won’t be disappointed.

The KTM Duke 200 is the first KTM to be sold in India by Bajaj and is one of the most affordable performance motorcycles you can buy today. The bike’s overall design and styling is new to India as no other bike had the same design philosophy. It is manufactured at Bajaj’s Chakan plant and is exported to many international markets.

The KTM Duke 200 is powered by a 199.5cc single-cylinder liquid cooled engine that churns out 25bhp at 10, 000 rpm and a peak torque of 19.2Nm at 8000 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox that shifts smoothly and works well with the wet multi-disc clutch. The claimed top speed is 138kmph while the bike can do 0-100 kmph in 9.3 seconds. It is sold in India in three colours – Orange, Black and White.

Grip Action
Jul 18, 2016 11:39 PM 3326 Views

The Duke 390 engine starts promptly and settles into a steady 1, 000-rpm idle. The riding posture is comfortable for a daylong ride, and the engine responds vigorously to the throttle inputs. Unfortunately, the grip action needs to be improved because I have to reset my hand on the grip whenever I wanted the fully open position Nevertheless, the 2014 Duke 390 is a highly spirited ride, and the KTM single is a true force of nature. It pulls hard from 3, 000 rpm, and keeps revving all the way to the limiter at well past 10, 000. And it stays civilized the whole time. The torque delivery is more vigorous than I expected, granting me all the pulling power I needed to balance my weight and the machine’s when leaning at knee-grinding angles in a medium speed bend. At first, I took this turn n third gear, but soon found that fourth was a much better choice because it helped me a solid 100 mph going down the following straight. Very impressive!. thank for making this kind of bike it ow-some
