First May is observed as “International Workers' Day (also known as May Day) is a celebration of the international labour movement. May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries. In many of the manufacturing plants, the trade union people would take out a rally in observation and to create awareness on the Workers day. The dictionary meaning of Worker is One who works at a particular occupation or activity or One who does manual or industrial labor. So Is in this 21st century does this have any significance? Today the context and Meaning of Worker has changed and is interpreted differently. If someone is doing manual work in an industry or working as a daily wage labour, then he is treated as worker. I always admired Mr. Subrotho Roy of Sahara Group, he calls himself as Managing Worker and chairmen. I was working in a continuous manufacturing plant at some point of the career. We had levels defined, however the organization culture was different. The think thanks of the organization had adopted a culture of High Performance Organization. Having provided the best in class facilities, at certain point of time, one of our collogues came with the humorous concept of Labour till death. Many took it to their heart and mended their ways and climbed the corporate ladder and now in good positions. I was reading an article of one of the admired software industry where in they had issued appointment letters for new joinees, recruited through campus, due to the change in business and economic conditions they are not allocated any positing. The Human Resource person made an out busting comment saying they need fresh talent with huge ideas and not coding cooliees, who become an software worker. I had attended an CII convention, a year back. Government and Industry leaders project the shortfall of skilled traders like Welders, Electricians, Mechanics, etc but no one is keen to undergo the training and stand on their own feet. Today many of us are not getting the mechanics to repair the utilities and we just exchange or adopt use and throw policy and call ourselves adopting to western culture. This is not only a waste of resource but also huge pinch to the pockets. Bottom-line Today there is no dignity to the work we do. Hard work has become hardly work and people appreciate them self as Smart Work.
