Our country has a National dress which was stipulated, I guess, not much after our independence. National dress for men is white Sherwani and Churidar trouser ( Pyjama) Jawaharlal Nehru always wore that dress in white. Lot of dignitaries wore the national dress at all functions, particulaly the national or Government functions. Sometime later a variant of this was added to the National Dress. .This was Trouser and Jodhpuri coat.Jodhpuri coat is a variation of the western coat, in the sense that this coat is buttoned up to the neck instead of being open chested. The new suit thus was trouser with 'band gala' coat. This alo became very popular and was liked very much by lots of people. This could be woollen and cloth of your liking and design. But 9s there a National Dress for women? Has anything like this been specified or stipulated. As far as I can recall NO. Well I have a suggestion and a proposal for the National Dress nay I would call it Universal Dress for women. We should not forget that the Universal feminine dress in India is the Saree. Saree is not only very elegant and most graceful wear for women. In fact long ago I was sitting and reading some magazines in the U.S. Information Centre. There in some magazine I read an article by an American visitor/tourist who described the saree as the most graceful, attractive and elegant women's dress . I could n't agree more with that assessment. A beautiful saree worn perfectly is the most lovely wear and you want to watch, see it never ending. Saree is worn in almost every part of our country. There may be variations in the method of wearing, Maharashtrin, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamilian or that in the North East part of the country, and so on. But the grace of the dress is universal. WE all observe this and appreciate. But Saree has never been declared as our women's National Dress! In this blog I am proposing a Univeral Dress for the Indian women! Can this be done. Is it feasible and acceptable. My suggestion is based on a common observation I believe all specially the women will agree with my proposal/suggestion. I find the most commonly used dress by women in most parts of India is a simple and convenient dress. Even in the South this dress is becoming very popular and accepted dress. I have seen and found ladies of all calling and placement like and adore it. In fact I asked many women from the south wearing this dress reply, it is very convenient and that reply I got from all ladies from Bengal, Bangaluru, Bihar, Oddisha, assam and manipur, Maharashtra, Gujarat and so on. The convenient universally accepted dress is none other than 'Salwar Kameez". It is very convenient to use and maintain and is available in many variations, colour and design. So much and so widespread being its prevalence, liking and acceptance why not declare or designate this as ladies' Universal Dress!. I am for it and many women I talked to agree about the ease, appearance and liking of this dress that they accept it as very good. So let us compaign for "Salwar Kameez" as the ladies most common wear, Universal Dress
