Zone Labs - Zone Alarm Reviews

The best firewall out there.
Sep 08, 2011 03:28 PM 3859 Views

While Windows comes packed with an Firewall many of us find that lacking in security and very difficult to allow/revoke access to a program. Note that Windows Xp SP2's firewall does not blocks outgoing connections.

Zone alarm handles these very well and blocks pretty much any unwanted connection and bounces inbound connections to provide anonymity. Interface is very convenient and every time an program tries to access internet it will ask for your permission, you can choose to allow just that time or grant/block permanently.

Memory Footprint: 3 MB (main exe) + 17 MB Vector monitor.

PS: Your lan connections may not work after installing ZA. To resolve this simply disable firewall for the duration OR create an Trusted group (in ZA) and add lan connection to it.

Zone Alarm "The Best Internet Security Suite"
Dec 01, 2006 02:50 PM 4807 Views

Hi friends,

I am using this Zone Alarm security suite from 2003, so u can trust my review whole heartedly. As far as I am concerned ZAis excellent and it is the best available in market.

The features of suite are

1, Firewall

2, Program Control

3, Antivirus

4, Antispyware

5, Antispam

6, Privacy

7, Identity Protection

8, Parental Control

Firewall

As far as firewall is concerned.ZA is the best in the business. Nothing can compete with ZA.It offers duel protection (Both inbound& Outwards).Second place goes to Outpost firewall & Norton...

Program Control

This is an excellent feature that decides which programs installed in PC can access Internet & which can act as server. U can set priority to individual programs installed.U can also set priority & rights to services &individual components.

Antivirus

Antivirus is provided by Computer Associates (CA).Antivirusis good as far as I am concerned (It is rated relatively low on sites). It iscapable of scanning ZIP & RAR files..It scans the PC in relatively swift manner.

Antispyware

I accept that Antispyware is on relatively weaker side. This is the only weak pt in ZA .u can easily get rid of spyware by installing Adaware (Freeware).

Antispam

I don’t use Outlook/Outlook Express. So don’t use ZA’sAntispam feature. I keep it Off Always.

Privacy

Cookie control, ad blocking, mobile code control, cache cleaner and others. All features are great & work well.

Identity Protection

Protects ur Credit card details & other important information from hacking sites.

Parental Control

U can block websites of certain type.

Spy Site Blocking

Prevents spyware from getting on your PC by blocking its primary source: spyware distribution websites.

Resource Usage

I used each & Every Security Suite available and ZA is the one which consumes less resource than any other suite. Booting is not delayed much. Compared to Norton this ZA consumes very less RAM only. this suite is rated best by Cnet (Download.com).u can trust Cnet and me too…GO FOR ZA & SURF SAFER…

Resource hog

DONT USE THIS PROGRAM

unless your running a p4 with at least 256ddr ram this program is a system resource hog. Slowing down your start up time, and causing your OP to run unstable at its best performance. This program pops up windows asking you if you want to allow every program in your computer that needs to access the internet the rights to sign on. With out knowing what your doing your preventing your computer from getting critical updates that it needs. If you want a firewall,... by a cheap router Future Shop has them on sale for 10 bucks right now.

”The important question is, How many hands have I shaked?''

-- George Dubya Bush, Answering a question about why he hasn't spent more time in New Hampshire, in the New York Times, Oct. 23, 1999

Internet is a free backbone for communication. Its also completely open. Free and Open are often good signs for hackers to hack into systems connected to internet. Internet Service Providers cannot provide total security on internet, because the very idea of not allowing customers to access services which an ISP may term dangerous is wrong. Hence an ISP is more likely to give its customers as much open connection to internet; which in itself is dangerous too – a Catch 22 situation! However most ISPs leave the security issues to the customers to take care of. What I mean by “customers” are ordinary web users like you and me. Firewalls like the name suggests act as a wall against attacks on your system which is vulnerable to any kind of attacks unless already secured. Of late firewalls have become increasingly popular.

The firewalls have increased in popularity for several reasons. Prime ones being

  1. Hacker attacks on computers. Hackers may use your system to induce a Distributed Denial of Service attacks.

  2. Spoofing information. This happens mostly by companies like Gator who consistently try to get information for a particular user and then send him/her spam mails.

  3. Storing Data. A hacker may actually get control of your system and without your knowledge may actually store his/her data. This has happened with me twice already.

VPN (Virtual Private Networking) has been termed as an excellent solution to business customers who want absolute security on the internet. However its not of much use for people like us. We need something which costs as less as possible, gives enough security and yes doesn’t come at the cost of not using applications we like to use. Firewalls score over VPNs in all those respects. And amongst them ZoneAlarm personal firewall scores above the rest of them. The basic version of this software is free and can be downloaded from https://zonealarm.com.

PHEETURES

ZoneAlarm is an ideal firewall for day to day personal daily use. It doesn’t consume memory at all, hence you can be sure your system will not go at snail’s pace (try installing Norton and McAfee, u will know what I mean). One should not be connected to internet after downloading it. Install it and then when the ZoneAlarm software declares that you are ready to tackle the goons on the net, get on the internet!

Firewall: ZoneAlarm offers you to configure your system in 2 settings. The internet zone security defines 3 levels of security – Low, Medium, High. High just hides your system on the internet. Medium is a good option for temporary stays on internet. Low is obviously not recommended. ZoneAlarm also offers users to configure their system according to trust zones. Trust Zones define which computers you trust and which computers you deem should be able to connect to you and use your resources. Again, the Low setting is not recommended, while the High setting just blocks anything and everything from outside world. With both settings high, its almost impossible for a day to day hacker to hack in.

Program Control: Think of this scenario. You have blocked outside world from accessing your computer. What about programs (codes, worms, Trojans, virus, adware, spyware, spoofware, etc) which will send information to the other side. How will you stop that! Again ZoneAlarm offers program control feature by which you can configure which applications you would like to give permissions to access the internet. Some embedded advantages of using this are:

• You can virtually take care as to what applications access the internet. Plus, when you are not sure of what applications to give permission to, you can always deny it and see what happens to the system.

• An alert will pop-up when an application will try to connect to internet. By clicking more information, you are directed to ZoneAlarm website where all the details of the program are given to you. You will also get technical information regarding the program which is attempting to access the internet. ZoneAlarm also makes an evaluation of the application which tried to access the internet and give you appropriate steps to secure your system.

• Extended features like WhoIs (a feature which tells you exactly where the application was going to; what person who is using it; and stuff like that) is also available.. This feature was free previously, but now its paid. However if you know your IP, then a random google search will get you all sorts of WhoIs software to determine where your application intended to go on the net. For information, WhoIs is small software which traces an IP down to its domain and gives you information as to who is controller of that domain.

• An Alert pop-up window will also come up when an external hacker tries to hack in. Using more information again, one can find where exactly the hack came from. The WhoIs feature is extremely useful here, however its paid in this software.

• Advanced level of security can also be purchased to make your system totally secure!

Email Protection: There is basic email protection bundled with ZoneAlarm. You will be able to just scan your incoming emails. Nothing spectacular, but if you want complete email protection, you have to buy additional features. The bundled features are good enough actually for ordinary email protection; however its limited to scanning only VB Scripts with .vbs extensions only.

Internet Lock: This is a very useful feature if you are continuously connected to the net. When not using the net, the Internet Lock can be enabled to block any incoming or outgoing traffic to or from your pc. Hence you can be assured that your kazaa is not sending personal information across the net!

EENTERPHACE

The interface is clean and uncluttered. All features mentioned above can be accessed very easily. There is also a tutorial on how to use ZoneAlarm if any one is not familiar with it already. The interface also lets you know exactly how many attempts have been made on your computer and how many of them are serious. Don’t be surprised to find 100s of attacks on your PC listed on the interface. Partly because ZoneAlarm considers Ping and ICMP requests as attacks, you will see quite a lot of attacks. However genuine attacks will be less.

PHINALLY

However all said and done, nothing is ever safe from the hands of the hacker. The war between hackers and security software makers is always on. ZoneAlarm may not be a completely fool proof security option, but its definitely a one stop solution for ordinary users and should give adequate level of security. I could still go on writing about this lovely software, however I got to end within this 8000 character limit. For extensive details on this software, don’t hesitate to M2M me :)

Happy Securiting. :)

This Review in toast to Mr. Technology of MouthShut and my very good friend from days of Apna Guide and MS - Achougoo...Ameet.

I'm not a fan.
Jul 20, 2001 12:57 AM 5103 Views

When I downloaded this piece of software, it was in retaliation to the people who flood internet chatrooms. It was recommended to me by a friend who said that it would, to a certain extent, prevent this. He was right and from then on I used to survive a lot of the floods although the good users could still kick you out if they wanted to.

After a while though I started to notice that zonealarm was overruling a lot of the decisions that I was making. For instance, if I wanted to enter a site and the program didn't like it, it would stop you from going in there. All very well and good if it may cause a problem to your system, but these were sites I had visited for a while. Not unknown sites but sites like MSN etc. Sites that millions of other people visit without problems.

This is why I'm not happy with the software. Even when I turned down the level of security etc, it still wouldn't let me into certain sites. Now I don't know about you but I like to be in control of my computer.

The one good thing that has come from it though is that there are so many hidden programs that run when you enter a site. Zonealarm informs you of every one and asks if you want to let it run. Even if you say no and zonealarm shuts it down, it still doesn't mean you can't view the site, so obviously it may have had nothing to do with it. However, you still don't find out what the hidden program was, at least not in detail.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it if you like to be your own computer user. This doesn't let you do half the stuff you would normally do although if you are a regular chat room user then it could be for you.

A marvellous easy to use product

Since installing ZoneAlarm I have seen how many times others have tried to access my system .... without success. ZoneAlarm is easy to install and configure and runs quietly in the background. It appears to have no compatablility problemswith anything I have thrown at it, including AOL

One of the rare free programs that has the look, feel and effectiveness of a paid-for program. Has small quirks, but overall works very well. Once it blocked my time synchronizer program from internet access, even though I had given the program permission in ZoneAlarm, which had up until this point been allowing the program access. This shut the time synchronizer down, or course. I deleted the program from ZoneAlarm's program list, and when ZoneAlarm next encountered the program I gave it access again. Now it blocks the program intermittently, but lets it through often enough to keep my clock set. This is the only problem I have had with ZoneAlarm, and it is minor.

Version 2.6 is perfect for stopping port scans and probes into your computer while on the internet. I was amazed at how often my computer was getting hit while surfing. The best part is that this newest version of ZoneAlarm handled every trick they could try, from TCP Flags:S to Port 0 ICMP (type:8/subtype:0) and (type:3/subtype:1) attacks, which used to stop my proxy protected IE 5.50 browser cold. If your web browser freezes for no apparent reason, it might be your ports were attacked successfully. I would not go onto the Internet without this program!

Zonealarm Pro Version 2.6 works excellent. It blocks all netbios, etc and hacking attempts. This firewall actually tells you in real time what is going on, compared to other firewalls that you had to go into a log. No problems using this firewall. I would recommend ZoneAlarm Pro 2.6 to any person needing a firewall. It is very important that all Cable and DSL users use a firewall because your IP address usually stays the same, thus making it easier for a hacker to get access to your computer if you don't have a firewall. Believe me, my computer has been hacked, before I had a firewall of course. I strongly recommend everyone download ZONEALARM PRO 2.6. It is diffently worth the little money.

I have been forced to use a firewall because of People on IRC doing a little hacking. I previously used norton 2001 firewall and found it was hard to use and blocked me from seeing pictures and other important infromation like navigation controls. This program uses little resources and is very easy to configure with out haveing to make up complex firewall rules like others I have tried. This 1 is a winner, it has been saving my but from those unwanted hackers + crackers and also scans ports that viruses would come in on and puts u in stealth mode so when a person tries to sence u're computers weakness they dont get a responce. so it appears u're not even there this gets a Top notch rating I wish other firewalls would learn something from freeware companines. Just cause u pay for software dont mean it is going to do any better than the free 1's.

A Great Firewall You Can Afford: It's Free!
Mar 19, 2001 11:51 PM 6307 Views

With over 300 million Internet users around the world, there are more than a few hackers who delight in invading our privacy and our computers. Without some type of protection installed, our on-line systems are open invitations. I always presumed that no one would want the meager contents of my computer, that those intrusive fellows would opt for more productive hard drives, those owned by bank officials or holders of corporate stock.

It wasn't until I installed an intrusion alert that I realized how vulnerable I was. That's when I did a survey of firewall software and selected ZoneAlarm to protect my computer.

ZoneAlarm software is free for personal use and for those involved in non-profit organizations. If you're a business user, you'll want to choose ZoneAlarm Pro for the relatively small price of $39.95 USD (1,865 INR.)

Here are the features and advantages of ZoneAlarm:

  1. Software is available on line (https://zonealarm.com) in a small file that downloads quickly.

  2. Installation and setup is virtually automatic and requires only a few seconds.

  3. Use of system memory is small. It runs in the background and doesn't slow system operation at all.

  4. The level of security can be adjusted at any time for both internal and external operations. If others have access to your computer and someone tries to use your system to upload materials to the Internet, you can adjust the firewall to block them.

  5. ZoneAlarm makes your system appear invisible to scans by hackers. One of the most popular methods of intrusion involves scans of hundreds or thousands of computers. From this feast of information, the hackers can decide where to concentrate activities. If your system appears invisible, those using this method won't even know your computer exists.

  6. E-mail attachments and files that appear suspect are spotted by ZoneAlarm and an alert is issued. A decision can be made to isolate or delete the file before it is opened, the point at which most viruses are usually released.

  7. ZoneAlarm provides protection for computers using Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and ME.

If you're connected to the Internet using a network or broadband connection the use of a firewall is critical. These systems are usually on and operating 24-hours a day and offer a prime target for intruders. If you use a modem connection, the risk is smaller but still present. For either user, ZoneAlarm provides powerful protection for personal computers at a price anyone can afford. It's FREE!
