”The important question is, How many hands have I shaked?''
-- George Dubya Bush, Answering a question about why he hasn't spent more time in New Hampshire, in the New York Times, Oct. 23, 1999
Internet is a free backbone for communication. Its also completely open. Free and Open are often good signs for hackers to hack into systems connected to internet. Internet Service Providers cannot provide total security on internet, because the very idea of not allowing customers to access services which an ISP may term dangerous is wrong. Hence an ISP is more likely to give its customers as much open connection to internet; which in itself is dangerous too – a Catch 22 situation! However most ISPs leave the security issues to the customers to take care of. What I mean by “customers” are ordinary web users like you and me. Firewalls like the name suggests act as a wall against attacks on your system which is vulnerable to any kind of attacks unless already secured. Of late firewalls have become increasingly popular.
The firewalls have increased in popularity for several reasons. Prime ones being
Hacker attacks on computers. Hackers may use your system to induce a Distributed Denial of Service attacks.
Spoofing information. This happens mostly by companies like Gator who consistently try to get information for a particular user and then send him/her spam mails.
Storing Data. A hacker may actually get control of your system and without your knowledge may actually store his/her data. This has happened with me twice already.
VPN (Virtual Private Networking) has been termed as an excellent solution to business customers who want absolute security on the internet. However its not of much use for people like us. We need something which costs as less as possible, gives enough security and yes doesn’t come at the cost of not using applications we like to use. Firewalls score over VPNs in all those respects. And amongst them ZoneAlarm personal firewall scores above the rest of them. The basic version of this software is free and can be downloaded from https://zonealarm.com.
PHEETURES
ZoneAlarm is an ideal firewall for day to day personal daily use. It doesn’t consume memory at all, hence you can be sure your system will not go at snail’s pace (try installing Norton and McAfee, u will know what I mean). One should not be connected to internet after downloading it. Install it and then when the ZoneAlarm software declares that you are ready to tackle the goons on the net, get on the internet!
Firewall: ZoneAlarm offers you to configure your system in 2 settings. The internet zone security defines 3 levels of security – Low, Medium, High. High just hides your system on the internet. Medium is a good option for temporary stays on internet. Low is obviously not recommended. ZoneAlarm also offers users to configure their system according to trust zones. Trust Zones define which computers you trust and which computers you deem should be able to connect to you and use your resources. Again, the Low setting is not recommended, while the High setting just blocks anything and everything from outside world. With both settings high, its almost impossible for a day to day hacker to hack in.
Program Control: Think of this scenario. You have blocked outside world from accessing your computer. What about programs (codes, worms, Trojans, virus, adware, spyware, spoofware, etc) which will send information to the other side. How will you stop that! Again ZoneAlarm offers program control feature by which you can configure which applications you would like to give permissions to access the internet. Some embedded advantages of using this are:
• You can virtually take care as to what applications access the internet. Plus, when you are not sure of what applications to give permission to, you can always deny it and see what happens to the system.
• An alert will pop-up when an application will try to connect to internet. By clicking more information, you are directed to ZoneAlarm website where all the details of the program are given to you. You will also get technical information regarding the program which is attempting to access the internet. ZoneAlarm also makes an evaluation of the application which tried to access the internet and give you appropriate steps to secure your system.
• Extended features like WhoIs (a feature which tells you exactly where the application was going to; what person who is using it; and stuff like that) is also available.. This feature was free previously, but now its paid. However if you know your IP, then a random google search will get you all sorts of WhoIs software to determine where your application intended to go on the net. For information, WhoIs is small software which traces an IP down to its domain and gives you information as to who is controller of that domain.
• An Alert pop-up window will also come up when an external hacker tries to hack in. Using more information again, one can find where exactly the hack came from. The WhoIs feature is extremely useful here, however its paid in this software.
• Advanced level of security can also be purchased to make your system totally secure!
Email Protection: There is basic email protection bundled with ZoneAlarm. You will be able to just scan your incoming emails. Nothing spectacular, but if you want complete email protection, you have to buy additional features. The bundled features are good enough actually for ordinary email protection; however its limited to scanning only VB Scripts with .vbs extensions only.
Internet Lock: This is a very useful feature if you are continuously connected to the net. When not using the net, the Internet Lock can be enabled to block any incoming or outgoing traffic to or from your pc. Hence you can be assured that your kazaa is not sending personal information across the net!
EENTERPHACE
The interface is clean and uncluttered. All features mentioned above can be accessed very easily. There is also a tutorial on how to use ZoneAlarm if any one is not familiar with it already. The interface also lets you know exactly how many attempts have been made on your computer and how many of them are serious. Don’t be surprised to find 100s of attacks on your PC listed on the interface. Partly because ZoneAlarm considers Ping and ICMP requests as attacks, you will see quite a lot of attacks. However genuine attacks will be less.
PHINALLY
However all said and done, nothing is ever safe from the hands of the hacker. The war between hackers and security software makers is always on. ZoneAlarm may not be a completely fool proof security option, but its definitely a one stop solution for ordinary users and should give adequate level of security. I could still go on writing about this lovely software, however I got to end within this 8000 character limit. For extensive details on this software, don’t hesitate to M2M me :)
Happy Securiting. :)
