Well seen the latest Linux Xwindows software? User-friendly interface is the key word besides speed. Though Windows is most popular OS, primarily because of User-friendly interface again. How much more user-friendly can it get, waiting for Windows XP? So Winzip 8.00 (32 bit) is by far the most popular compression utility – again because of….. (you guessed it!).
So the question is, “How much more user-friendly can Winzip get?” Check out the latest update Winzip 8.1 Beta. “Oh beta! Sorry no way – I am not going to try it on my PC”. But let me tell you winzip lovers, that the Beta version is perfectly stable and works just fine. Tip-Top!
THE WINZIP-WINDOWS EXPLORER MARRIAGE: Well the last time around, I mentioned ‘n’ different ways files can be compressed or compressed file be extracted in my article “From 2.4 MB to 360 KB: Just Zip It” on Winzip 8.0. Maintaining all those features, users will come across more enhancements, so much more that the various options are kept in a submenu. When you right-click on the filenames in Windows Explorer there is an option Winzip >. The right-arrow indicates the presence of a submenu. (Remember in the earlier versions we had “add to zip” and “add to {filename.zip}” only). The submenu has several options such as:
Add to Zip file…: adds the selected items to a new or existing Zip file (through a dialog box). WinZip remains open after the add operation is complete.
Add to filename.zip: If a single file is right-clicked and this option selected it will create a zip file with the same name as the file but with extension .zip (and in same folder). If multiple files are selected for zipping, it will compress the files in foldername.zip.
Add to recently used Zip file: This is new option, which opens a submenu listing of recently used Zip files. The selected items are added to the Zip file you pick from the list.
Open with winzip: Some files are self-extracting exe’s or “.cab” files, which can be executed by double-clicking on it. The contents of such files can also be viewed with winzip. The latest additions to files that can be opened with winzip are Yahoo! Player (.yfs), WinAmp skin files (.wsz), Windows Media Player skin files (.wmz)
Zip and email: Compresses file and attaches the file to a mail by opening the default email client. This option was present in Winzip 8.0.
Zip and email plus: This is new addition, which is similar to above but then it permits the filename to be changed and hmmmm…allows password protection (Guys/gals winzip password crackers are available though on the Net).
For compressed files the options change… the options “Extract to here”, “Extract to folder folder-name”, “Extract to here using file names for folders”, “Extract to folder …”, “Create Self-Extractor (.Exe)”. Most users may not like so many options since the pop-up menu (that comes on right-clicking in explorer), since it appears cluttered. Winzip makers realize this and do not force all the options on users. What I mean is that what items should be displayed in the submenu can be configured too (Check in Options – Configuration – Explorer Enhancements)
SPLIT FILES: There are many restrictions imposed by different email services regarding the file size that can be e-mailed. For eg. Yahoo has restriction of 1 MB. Winzip as it is, can reduce file size due to compression. Even then, if the file size is still big? The new version comes with an option to split files. This is not a direct option. Firstly you select many files and zip it. Then you open that zip file using winzip. Then you select Action – Split. It opens a dialog box where user can specify a file name (no extension please) and user can also select file size in bytes, KB, MB (minimum file size allowed is 64 KB). Eg. If I specify file name as “trial” and size as 70 KB, it will split files with extension trial.z01, trial.z02, trial.z03 and so on with the last file trial.zip. The last file will automatically recombine all the files. Also by right-clicking on this last file and selecting extract option it will recombine all the files and extract them. However, there is a compatibility issue here. To open a split file, users necessarily need WinZip 8.1. Another flaw is the two-step approach – open a zip file and then split. (I bet the “Filesplit 2.2” software and “Slice 3.0” does a better job as it creates a batch file in addition to split files. This batch file can be executed by anyone to recombine the files).
WINZIP QUICK PICK TASKBAR TRAY ICON: The new WinZip Quick Pick taskbar tray icon gives user instant access to WinZip (left-click on icon). Right click it to instantly reopen 10 recently used Zip files, access your Favorite Zip Folders, open WinZip help, or start WinZip itself.
EXTRACT MULTIPLE FILES: It is now possible to select multiple zip files in Windows Explorer and extract them simultaneously. There are two options.
a) If files “great.zip” and “tough.zip” are extracted to folder “My Documents” – it will extract the contents of both the files directly in “My Documents”.
b) If files “great.zip” and “tough.zip” are extracted to folder “My Documents” – it will extract the contents of great.zip in “My Documents\Great\” and contents of tough.zip in “My Documents\Tough\”. i.e it will create folders with names same as the filenames.
WINDOWS XP SUPPORT: Now this is something I could not check, cause the support is inherent and not through any setting control and I do not have Windows XP. But Winzip claims to support all the themes for menus, arrows, buttons etc and high-resolution images and icons.
But there is one major flaw. It was pointed out to me by fellow members in my earlier review on Winzip 8.0. The flaw remains even now. What is it? The Zip compression algorithm hasn’t been updated in over a decade plus. Other programs like WinRAR 2.8 and WinACE 2.3 gives higher compression than WinZip 8.1.
