Error when playing anything
Aug 11, 2017 12:21 AM 943 Views (via Mobile)

When I install windows 8 then windows media player are automatic installed only want to setup Microsoft account to use then I login and play my favorite and it play very nicely and when I play mkv and avi, ogg format then it shows that(error 0x900855 in case you need) then I contact to Microsoft Windows helpline number for inquiry and they says try that(developer cannot working yet with windows media player 9 sorry).

Video file not supported by any formats.

Sometimes automatically off player and show this error code(omkvh685 error code try again).

In 2011 windows.com announced that they decided to add windows media player 9 in windows 8 for working even more better and supports all format but reality is not.

So my 2 year experience with my personal opinion that don't use it use any third party application for playing video and music.

Not a good media player but not also very bad

I did not know why the Microsoft continuously using windows media player as a defaults players. this is a very old media player and the features of this players is also too old.

The Microsoft media players @9 series development kit is provided customise information to use windows media players ActiveX control and Microsoft try to enhanced the features and make user friendly of this series. its support for plug-ins that create visualisation effect and digital signal process task. so that user use the app in full mode of players.

As per my review the media players is also good for simple purpose and the features of to add more mp3 and mp4 in media players list is very nice in the comparison of other media players. this is one of the best features of windows media players.

Lastly, I am requesting to Microsoft media development team for developed better app or added another players like VLC as a defaults players in Microsoft windows.

There is one question that keeps on revolving around my head is that Why is Microsoft still continuing this Medoa Player? . Whats the point of keeping this alive? .

Anyone hardly on this eaeth now uses this partcular software to play music or movies. Earlier with Xp it was suitable or Ms should have ended its support by including it lastly with Vista.

Now tale the present scenario where we people have been introdcued to a next gen os Windows 10, but with that too there comes Media Player all same as the one we had got in Windows Xp, marginally the design has been overlooked to ammend it according to the layout of the new Win 10, so that you no longer feels it the same.

I have been playing all of my videos in either VLC or Gom playet, it doesnt mean that I have not media player anyyime by now. I have used it couple of times even gave it a preference as it would have been a better choice, where you dont have internet and this comes preloaded.

But it does not deserves someones attention and it is hardly mangeable for it to play any kind of videos. I played couple of Mkv and x265 videos none of them really started and instead gave me a error for the video, whereas they worled with every other player I installed.

No point of using this player of ancient times, when you have better choices like VLC  Gom, etc.

Pls remove this from windows
Mar 10, 2016 01:22 PM 1581 Views

I don’t know why Microsoft is still keeping this old crap software in the windows operating system. It has no use at all. Microsoft has already introduced the new music and video players in windows 10. They why this crap? The more disgusting thing about it is that you can’t uninstall this software.

So it will be there forever wasting your memory. It can’t even play the modern video formats or a subtitle. It still has that old ugly interface and look. It is very sad to see Microsoft is paying no attention to improve it or remove it. Really disgusting…

Descent and simple

The very first media Player I saw in my life is windows media player. I still remember when I was a kid and in third standard when I saw computer. Windows Media Player is from that time revolves in my mind. I love the simplicity of Windows Media Player. Now when I am using Windows Media Player 9 version it feels that this media player version is increasing just like my age.

With Windows Media Player you can enjoy music, videos, pictures and recorded TV on the go. You can also share with the devices around you. You can synchronize all media files in window media player and enjoy them any where.

I love the simple and descent design of Windows Media Player which is very user friendly. It is as simple that anyone can without any difficulty enjoy music, videos etc.

It will make you love the music. It gives a amazing music experience. It is a one place entertainment because you can enjoy every kind of music files with it.

You can enjoy it everywhere and stay connected with the devices around you.

Overall a good media player and a media player which is been there for us from a long time.

No use at all
Dec 17, 2015 02:34 PM 1798 Views

I don't know why Microsoft is still continuing this media player. I agree the fact that it was one of the best media player in the earlier generation. But for the last five or six years Microsoft has done nothing to improve it. They have added no new features to the built in media player of Windows operating system.

I wonder why it does not have support for playing MKV media files. Even the mobile media players support this. Also it still support only very few media types.

I agree that it has one of the simplest user interface among all media players. But what is the need of it while you don.t support popular media types? I keep it on my laptop only because I can't uninstall it.

Not satisfying the quality of Microsoft
Dec 16, 2015 03:46 PM 1638 Views

Windows Media Player 9 is the updated version of previous Windows Media Player provided as a default media player  with recent Windows operating systems. I am using Windows Media Player 9. Its very lite and very user friendly. But it has some anomalies that's why not satisfying the quality of Microsoft.

Windows Media Player supports very limited number of video file formats, so another player is needed to play the unsupported formats.

Player does not support subtitle files.

Very less number of control features available in Windows Media Player 9.

So, I like to suggest you go for other advance player to play your audio & video files.

DONT USE
Apr 30, 2015 03:51 PM 2269 Views

Based on my personal experience its just a pain and not very useful product from windows which is very disappointing! I have always hated this player form its starting days to date as it is as useless as internet explorer which are good for nothing.

Its not at all useful nor can use it even for playing music since its doesn't support all format of music as well. even the player is not very effective for watching movies and lack very much behind with other free software that are readily available and easy to use in the market

Windows Media Player 12 : Meh!
Apr 28, 2015 12:08 PM 2150 Views

Windows Media Player 12 is the latest version of Windows Media Player program and it comes pre-loaded with windows 7 and windows 8.1.

It is the default media player of windows OS, that means any media that you want to play on a windows machine will be played by Windows Media Player.

I have it in my PC and my laptop but let me be honest, I never use it. I have made VLC my default media player. So any media file opens directly in VLC, completely skipping Windows Media Player.

I do not like the UI of Windows Media Player. Its is not intuitive and it is somewhat complicated to setup and use.

Microsoft has tried to sync it with everything else windows but it just does not work for me.

They are now trying to add more and more codes and formats to the list of files it can play, but it is still not enough!

Verdict: There are much better and lighter media players out there available for free, go try them instead!

Pathetic Player
Apr 24, 2015 07:21 PM 2356 Views

It’s the worst music player on the earth. It comes as part of your windows so everyone using window has it.

Although you can make list of your choice of songs, you can mark it as favorite, play the songs on loop.

The appearance itself it boring. It doesn’t play many of the formats. Media player takes so much time to load and uses lot of CPU process.

Functionality of the player is also complicated.

It has CD burning option but it has never ever worked for me. There are definitely good and free players available on internet.

I never use dis Player. Doesn't play many formats!
Apr 24, 2015 04:48 PM 2106 Views

This player is actually an default player with windows so yes I have been only looking at this player for over 10 yrs I guess but never use it.  But the thing is u need not to install it as it comes defualt with any windows.

I always use the "=Media player classic(MPC)==" which actually works with the K-lite Codec pack.  And I also used the ==VLC Player=. but I love the mpc becoz of its easy to use.

Why I dont use WMP is because -

1) Its interface is worst.

2) It doest have setting to add up codec and u need to install the codec like DivX seprately to make the Avi video work.  But again, u can run the video like rmvb or even the flv!

3) its fast skip bar is way worst to use.  It cant be skipped in seconds like we can do in MPC.  Also using volume bar is way worst.

4) u cant use mouse scroll to do any operation here!

5) There lot more advanced setting in other player which lacks here.

6) The player take time to open.

7) without full screen toggle, u cant expand the player to full screen.

Why I prefer MPC is because -

1) Its interface is easy and player opens in less that a second.

2) Its has all the codec inbuilt with the player known as K-Lite codec pack.

3) You can control volume with mouse scroll which s cool.

4) The skipping of frame is very accurate.

5) The player has a lots of advanced setting like sound booster, selecting and unselecting

codecs and so on!

Verdict - Windows Media player is a Garbage.  I never use it.   I prefer Media player classic.

''9''
Jun 12, 2003 12:10 AM 9335 Views

Me Second! Firstly I would suggest you read ''Me First'' from TIC. Well guys n gals, it's about a claim ''WMP9 is the best Media Player ever unleashed''.

And I am here to support that claim and add my MS points to that pledge by TIC.

Here's some more description of WMP9 from - ME!

«« INSTALLATION »»

They they have two download files. One for all the die hard Bill boy's fan who love to contribute to his net worth by buying all the latest OS he releases (WinXP - home or enterprise) and other for lesser mortals like me (Win 98/98se/ME/2000). The XP edition promises to be the best with loads of extra features over the non-XP variant and yet is only 9.7 MB as against the 13 MB file downloaded by me.

While both these installations are easy and breezy, please pay attention to the screen where there are options like - ''Enable copyright protection'', which is fair enough. [Needless to mention that a corrupt me had it unchecked]. It just implies that you can copy music from CD in a secure format that works fine for your PC alone.

What is more essential are the options that allows you to

a) Send your player ID (and wonder what else?) to content providers

b) Send your player usage information to Microsoft.

If you check these, I will only pray for you - ''May God Bless You''

No don't worry! These can be unchecked later (see ''Privacy'' tab in Tools --> Options)

«« FIRST IMPRESSIONS »»

''Hmmm...Wow''. Yes it does make you feel nice. The new Steel - Aluminium looks are much better than WMP7. The best part is that loads very fast, provided you uncheck the option ''Start Player in Media Guide'' cause then it has to check for your connection details as well.

The screen has taskbar on left, player buttons on the bottom side and a combo box listing your music at the top. The rest of the screen is entirely customizable. You can see/hide playlist, visualization window, equaliser settings......ok yes you can also unhide the task bar.

The 3D buttons for play, stop etc look a lot better. What I liked was the ''Equaliser Settings''. Unlike WMP7 you can adjust these to move together in loose or tight group - a feature I remember seeing only in Sonique before. Well it also comes with presets like ''Dance'', ''Rock'', ''Speech'' etc.

«« BEAUTY IS SKIN DEEP »»

Yeah! It supports all the old skins you have already loaded for previous versions. XP users who dontlike cluttered screen, have an advantage here with the mini toolbar that places the player controls in windows taskbar. (damn neat feature!). But non-XP users, don't loose heart. Try the ''mini player'' skin. Also, Winamp lovers will be more comfortable with ''Revert'' skin that comes with WMP9.

«« ''9 SERIES - NAVRATNA'' »»

This ain't about looks alone. The developers have really slogged for it with enhancements in audio and video department. It will take good ear but the difference is easily noticeable.

  1. Music sounds too good in this one. Hear the bass, the treble, the vocals. I can ask for a confirmation from Maddy and Farid on MS. Try moving those equalizers and notice the change yourself. IT IS AMAZING!

  2. Add to that the ''True Bass'' and WOW effects to get the dome or hall kind of effects. If that ain't enough get the DSP plugins from the Net (often at a price, though!)

  3. For XP users with 5 speaker surround system support (sound cards), the XPrience is ''Out of The World'' as WMP9 has special multichannel (5.1 audio support).

  4. WMP9 also offers cross-fading i.e. smooth transition between two songs where the first one fades slowly and the second one starts playing. Alas XP users only. Damn Me! Curse my neighbour (he has XP)

  5. This is again a thorn in my feet, but WMP9 offers volume leveling that works OK. Usually songs recorded from different CDs have different volume settings and you have to rush to control the volume. WMP associates a volume figure for songs added to its playlist and then adjusts volume accordingly when it is played so that all songs in the playlist has same volume. Neat huh!

  6. The video support is enhanced too. The video plays reasonable smoothly (w/o jerks) and I have now uninstalled Xing Player now. While you can play the avseq*.dat in mpegav folder of your VCDs, automatic VCD support and DVD playback is but for the XP users (with DVD relate hardware of course)

  7. The FastStreaming is the most obvious enhancement that made me really happy. It adjusts playback and optimizes buffering depending on your connection speed so that you can watch streaming videos continuously without any break (unless you are still on 33 kBps).

  8. I get to listen to Internet Radio from a huge list of radio stations - Pop, Hip-hop, Rock...u name it, it plays. (Just be careful though as for most it opens that particular website in a new window and you have all sorts of pop-ups. A virus may also creep in and make you dance to its music).

  9. The Media guide keeps me update with music world and I can play some video in my lunch time. Just search for one and play. It's that easy. The search is several times better. I searched for ''Hi Sexy Lady'' and yes the first page of search results was all about ''Hi sexy lady'' by Shaggy and Brian. Imagine watching that in office hours!

«« MEDIA LIBRARY »»

This is one major improvement (as compared to WMP7) and better than that offered by ''Real Jukebox''. You can have your own playlist besides its own custom playlists that goes by titles as friendly as ''Music tracks I dislike'' (hee hee), ''favorites - listen to at night'', ''favorites - listen on weekends''. Of course the earlier classification based on album/artist/genre still exists but somehow seems more easier to work with.

Another interesting thing is the Tag Editor (with XP...sorry!). It also allows to rate a song (1 star to 5 star). It goes further than this. If you are hooked to Net, it scouts information about the song and fills up the details for you. Don't expect that for Hindi songs...dear!

«« COPY CDs »»

You can burn your own Audio CDs using the (*.wma or *.wav or *.mp3) files on your hard disk. It uses a Roxio CD burning software (win 98/Me/2000), which comes free but can write only at 4x speeds. Any higher and it says ''Upgrade Now'' (at a price of course). XP users again have more options at creating Audio and Data CDs and the WMA files only HighMat CDs.

«« HEY! BUT THEN... »»

While WMP9 creates audio CDs from MP3s, it does not rip Audio CDs to MP3s but favors its compact wma format only. The plug-ins come at $10. Its funny, everyone knows that there are free CD to Wave or MP3 rippers available on net by dozens!

Music making fraternity could swear by WMP9 with its digital rights management and license management policies that prevents you from listening ''protected'' music. It but allows you to download license from the Net with facilities to backup these licenses. This may or may not be free.

Premium Services: This allows songs/video downloads and lots of stuff but then you know what ''premium'' means, right? Oh! But there is a free trial period.

And yes, Tic is right - There is no UNINSTALL - no uninstall.exe and no its not listed in ''Add/Remove Programs'' list. There's only one way out - upgrade to WMP10.

Therez so much for XP users. Comeon Bill that'll not make me buy XP.

«« OVERALL »»

Yes, XP users - Go Get It!

Non-XP users - Go Get It!

Me First!
May 21, 2003 09:48 PM 4115 Views

This review is about a MEDIA PLAYER, not an Operating System, Radio Channel, Hardware, Windows (the real ones), etc. If in doubt, please M2M me!

I’m willing to wager all the MS points accumulated against my name (can’t think of any other way to redeem them otherwise) that WMP9 is the best Media Player ever unleashed and beats the latest versions of Real One Player and Winamp hands down.

My PC had just come back from its now-routine, bi-monthly health checkup and I felt this was the best opportunity to get into an experimenting mode. I installed and tried out WMP9 on Win 98 (SE), 2K and XP with varying results.

WMP9 was launched by MS in January 2003 and Bill Gates waxed eloquent on the occasion. Codenamed “Corona”, it was supposedly under development for the last 4 years at a cost of about 500 million dollars (!) I can’t vouch for those jaw-dropping figures but suffice to say that WMP9 is an experience like no other medial player.

Installation & Interface

The software can be easily downloaded from free download sites or even Microsoft’s site. The setup file weighs 9.7MB for WinXP and 13.3MB for other versions which is quite huge as compared to WMP7 (2.1MB). The setup screen is icy blue and quite refreshing from the drab versions earlier. The setup automatically detects the OS on which the installation is going to be done and from there, it’s a breeze.

On running for the first time, a small window appears asking if the user wants the copyright protection to be on or off. Since I rarely make copies of the songs on my PC, I opted to set it “On”. This option manifested itself when I ran it for the first time on Win98 and 2K but not on XP. The familiar screen of WMP8.x has been considerably changed and the screen is much sharper now and fits the corners of the screen more smugly when maximized.

The entire thing also appears more polished. The normal buttons or icons like play, pause, stop, etc. have been completely changed and look more aesthetic. The best part is that WMP9 takes a very short time to load, even lesser than WMP8.x or the latest Winamp 3.0.

There are 3 discreet buttons located at the bottom of the video display screen for maximising the video screen, viewing full screen and for changing the Playlist options. This is a welcome development because one need not search in the menu to change these options. Thankfully, the player can now be shrunk so as to make the controls appear only in the windows taskbar. This not only saves on precious RAM but also allows the user to change the settings without having to maximize the player screen.

Features & Utility

The opening screen automatically tries to connect to the Internet whenever its run and this contains useful links like “Getting Started” and “Demos” for handling various features. The “Media Guide” (needs Internet connection) contains links to trailers of movies and news snippets. I didn’t try to download any movies, (that would take me eons!) but yes, the trailers played fairly fast and the buffering time was barely detectable.

The “Media Library” still gives the customary “you appear to be running…” message but the mechanics of searching for and organizing media files have been vastly improved. It obviates the need for manual updation of missing information by automatically searching for the info on the net and updating it.

I was also happy to see that the “Radio Tuner” feature has been upgraded radically. It contains links to various radio stations that play specific kinds of music like Blues, Rock, Jazz, etc. Once selected, there’s also the option to visit the website of the radio station or to add it to “Favourite Stations” for future use.

A new feature is the “Premium Services” section. The four different options here offer access to more than 350 movies on demand, enable download, burning and transfer of music files, etc. Right now, these are available on a trial basis for a month but the user will have to shell out some dough to use it thereafter. There are 4 cool, pre-installed skins (Default, Compact, Corporate and Revert) and MS has been kind enough to shrink the size of the full screen to 1/3 of its original size while at the same time not sacrificing on the main options.

Drawbacks

1. Plug-ins – WMP plays MP3 files but doesn’t allow ripping/encoding them. To do that, the user needs to pay for a plug-in from a third party provider.

2. Some features are available only in XP – Features like Cross-fading and changing the colour scheme of the interface are available only in the XP version. Has Microsoft disowned the other versions?

3. Help File – The “Help” section is pathetic to the extent of being totally unhelpful and even the few tips given are more of “monologues”. A more detailed help section is available on the MS website but connecting to the Internet everytime one wants to use “Help” is a cumbersome process.

4. No Option to Uninstall – A major headache. Once installed, there’s no way to get rid of it, except by using the “System Restore” option available in all versions from Win2K onwards. To compound maters, if you’ve installed other software after WMP9 and then use the “System Restore” option, all of them go for a toss.

Thus Spake TiC

WMP9 is an out of this world experience and combines the best of audio and video capabilities. Everything about it is phenomenal – right from the interface to the features. Having tried out Winamp 3.0 recently, I can confidently assert that WMP is ahead of it by light years. For best results, install and run it on WinXP.

Some plug-ins, like those for Surround Sound 5.1 and SOS effects are worth downloading and trying out. These can be downloaded from MS’s website and greatly enhance the listening experience. The visualizations and skins are pretty cool and make for good eye candy but don’t take up too much system resources.

The quality of the video playback has been improved tremendously by using “Fast Stream” technology that substantially reduces the buffering time. With an eye on the future, MS has also included the playback of latest “DiVX” format of video files.

As the cyber world moves rapidly into an era of digital revolution, MS has taken abundant care to protect the copyrights of the original holders by enhancing the “Digital Rights Management” feature. In this, the user can copy a CD onto the hard disk but cannot share or make copies of the same. Though a bit hard on users, this is certainly a step in the right direction for artistes and music companies.

WMP9 is a totally new experience for faithful users in many ways and is set to revolutionalise the media player market in the new millennium. As things stand right now, MS has a winner on its hands.

I’m waiting…any takers for my wager?
