Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a free email application and best programming for the mailing. Thunderbird is anything but difficult to set up and install.i am utilizing Thunderbird from most recent one year and I am content with this application. in Thunderbird have new elements which is not accessible in Microsoft outlook.for stacking likewise its takes extremely time and devours less data.

Thunderbird permits you to include shading coded labels, à la Mail and Outlook's banners, to individual messages. You can change the names of the five default labels, or make new ones.for mail security I generally lean toward Thunderbird.on this application anybody can work who know the essential viewpoint its so natural to work.

Best alternative to Gmail
Jan 01, 2016 08:55 PM

Thunderbird email software is from most popular web browser company Mozilla. Its browser Firefox became more widely used web browser  .

Today I am here to share my review of email client Thunderbird  . I have huge expectations on this software. It has great spam filtering technology.

Most interesting feature is that add-on can be installed related to email purposes. same as like as in Firefox browser. It include tabbed viewing of emails. By using this we can link multiple emails like Gmail, yahoo, outlook under same email client. I like protection feature if this software. It provides great protection feature. there is a facility of installing add-ons. It can be a choice for one those who are concerned with security and privacy.

Mozilla Thunderbird v3 v/s MS, Apple n Eudora Mail
Nov 25, 2009 12:56 AM

Mozilla Thunderbird v3 Compete real Good with MS outlook, Apple Mail or Eudora Email clients.

Mozilla released Thunderbird 3, Beta 4 for testing. It includes the long-waited integration with the Mac OS X Address Book. This Quick Look review briefly introduces the Thunderbird e-mail application and compares it to Apple’s Mail App and MS outlook.

I have been an Outlook user for long time however Outlook has been degrading by performance problems ever since release of outlook 2003 and keeps getting worse. Almost impossible to work as it crashes every time People generally have strong feelings about their e-mail program. One can get much attached to a particular application, and yet always be yearning for something better.

Thunderbirds Quick Look won’t draw waves in once mind but performance & features certainly will!  Get the latest beta release of Mozilla Thunderbird. Thunderbird makes e-mailing safer, faster, and easier with such features as intelligent spam filters, a built-in RSS reader, add-ons, themes, and quick search. One of the key goals of Thunderbird 3 is to allow easier set up of an initial e-mail account options in order to provide control and flexibility.

For example, the POP, SMTP and port server settings are preloaded for Google Mail. Also Thunderbird has more easier way of defining e-mail signatures and the ability to set a background color for the body of messages. In addition to this one can configure Exchange or OUTLOOK web access along with most popular email account like Hotmail, yahoo etc in Thunderbird 3

All Mozilla Thunderbird configuration settings and Email are maintained in ..\Users\Bunty\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird/Profiles, so users who needs migrate to new workstation can copy it directly after installing thunderbird to retain original configuration.

What’s new in this version?

Thunderbird 3 Beta 4 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1.3 platform including a major overhaul to improve performance, stability, web compatibility, and code simplification and sustainability.

There are over 200 changes in this release, many laying the groundwork for future changes, including:

1) Thunderbird is a faster new Search feature with Advanced Filtering Tools

2) New Global Search Field with Auto complete

3) New Mail Account Setup Wizard feature can add Gmail account, feeds, and newsgroups almost automatically for most users. There is also the ability to manually add accounts as well.

4) Redesigned Mail Toolbar

5) Tabbed Email ... see all new features which can show your email accounts, feeds or new messages can show up as tabs, instead of a new window.

6) A new archiving feature makes saving message a snap and is kind of like what Gmail has been offering for their accounts.

7) Improvements to IMAP for faster message viewing

8) Improved message reader view

10) New Add-ons Manager

11) Improved Address Book interface

12) Improved import of mail from other Mail clients

13) Integration with Mac OS X Address Book

In particular, the integration with the Mac OS X Address Book may be the tipping point for many. Without that integration, many Mac users just ignored version 2 -- not wanting to maintain two address books.

14) T-bird works fine in Windows 7.

Mozilla is continuing their beta testing of their new Thunderbird 3 email program, which is expected to go final towards the end of December, 2009. I have been trying the latest beta, T-bird 3 beta 4 this past week and I like what I am seeing so far. First of all the new email version opens a lot quicker than version 2 does. But what really is new is the streamlined user interface that can be customized by the user. Thunderbird will soon become a powerful motivation and a realistic candidate for those users who needs smaller, simpler and feature rich email client application which can provide faster access to their tons of emails that too without spending single penny. Thunderbird for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X is totally free.

The best free mail client there is
Jan 31, 2007 05:31 PM

Mozilla Thunderbird has become one of the standard mail clients on almost everyone's PC today. Long gone are the days when you had to dish out a neat sum to get a functional mail client on a Windows machine. Thunderbird answers and caters to everyone's needs - be it a hardcore geek or a simplistic mail user.

The installation procedure for Thunderbird is straightforward. Just a click of a few buttons and you're done. Setting up a mail account is also relatively simple. As long as you have the details of your POP and SMTP server handy, you should have no problems in getting your mail up and running in less than 5 minutes.

What particularly pleases me about the product is its simplistic user interface. Its functional without being cluttered. The buttons are big and aesthetic at the same time, and couple this with a great theme engine and we have a sureshot winner. It also helps a lot that the product is free of cost and since it has a very dedicated community of open source developers, new features and updates are regular in nature.

And to top all of this, it also has extensible modules. For example, ReminderFox which can act as a simple calendar. A lot of add-ons/modules/extensions are common to both Firefox and Thunderbird which makes the number of modules go upto a staggering number.

A bit of History

Long time ago we had Netscape as the browser that everyone loved. It was a packakge of a browser, an email client, an addressbook and a web page editor. Then Microsoft all but killed it by releasing Explorer and Outlook Express for free. Netscape all but died. The source code was given to the community of developers and Mozilla was born. Mozilla was basically the same as Netscape ( in fact current Netscape versions use Mozilla and customize it for Netscape). However, everyone did not want everything, so standalone applications were made from Mozilla - most popular of which are Firefox and Thunderbird.

Here I will discuss Thunderbird - the email application

Dual Boot Nirvana !

If you are trying out Linux, you will most probably on a dual boot system. The major problems I was facing was how to access the emails which I had in Outlook on Windows and Evolution on Linux. With thunderbird I can do it very easily as Thunderbird allows me to specify where to put my mailbox on the hard drive.

The solution is - make a FAT partition on Windows and store your emails there. On the linux side, mount the FAT partition and point the path of the emails in Thunderbird... Vioala !

Change the skins

Bored of the looks of the normal icons ? Thunderbird supports themes - with which you can change the look of the buttons, throbber etc. Check https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/?application=thunderbird

Threading

If you are an Outlook Express user or use Outlook before 2003 version, you will not even know what this means. Basically, all conversations in your folder can be sorted based on conversations - with indentations to show who replied to what. A boon if you are on email groups where people reply to different people's emails.

Extend your mails

Extensions allows you to add support to thunderbird which are not available by default. e.g. there is an extention to allow you to see which email client the sender has used :-D .

A more usefull extention is the calendar.

For a list of extentions check : https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=thunderbird

Text mode

I like getting emails in text - and this application really supports it. Other apps show text emails using fonts which cause all the text to be compressed. However, here the ASCII support is really good.

Palm Support

Thunderbird also comes with Palm support so you can sync your addressbook and calendar data on your palm.

RSS

The RSS feeds are supported in TB. I have feeds for Slashdot, CNN, CNET as part of TB. This allows me to actively recieve news without having to go to the websites !!! Makes my life quite a lot easier.

Not so good stuff

  • Calendar support is not good.

  • Group calendaring with Exchange is not possible as Exchange uses a proprietry interface. TB being a free application does not provide this.

IF you don't use the Calendaring system of MS Exchange, this should be your email client.

IF you are using Outlook Express - upgrade now. You will not regret it.

Outlook is dead meat.
Nov 26, 2004 11:58 AM

Thunderbird 0.9 version is the newest mail client around. It’s by the same brilliant folks who gave us Firefox 1.0.

Nearly every single feature of Microsoft Outlook/Exchange is here.

I’ve been using it for a few days now and I’m mighty impressed. Heres why:

  1. Fast to start. The app starts within 2-3 seconds unlike Outlook Exchange which takes upto 2-3 minutes.

  2. Look and feel and element placement is the same as Outlook. So you get going immediately. This is good. I’ve experimented with Eudora and some other clients and they’re terrible.

  3. Minimum usage of icons. So no cluttering with some one elses artwork.

  4. Message filtering is very effective. I receive very few junk mails now. Theres a feature to configure this.

  5. It has a feature to display all related messages in a threaded way. Thats somewhat similar to a discussion forum where each message and its reply is nicely formatted for easy reading.

  6. Supports encryption. If you’re a big time banker you might want this feature.

  7. You can create message templates. This is slightly different from a draft.

  8. Barring a few all the short cut keys are similar to Outlook. Ex: To sent a message use Cntrl+Enter instead of Alt + S in Outlook.

Problems so far:

---------------------

I haven’t managed to import my Outlook address book. Some mess up here. But I should be able to do it soon.

Review on Mozilla Thunderbird
Nov 23, 2004 09:14 PM

A perfect foil to Mozilla Firebird, an ideal e-mail client to go with it.

Thunderbird is a standalone news/e-mail client with LDAP support. It supports IMAP, POP , NNTP (and many other protocols, refer to https://mozilla.org for more details).

It comes with Global Inbox to handle multiple mail accounts. Has excellent message search mechanism (way easier than poor outlook search). If you are on Unix, it beats Ximian with its speed, while on Windows its features beat outlook. Outlook has better integration with calender and other Microsoft products. But Thunderbird is much easier to use (once you know how to).

Thunderbird supports :

  1. Multiple mail accounts with Global inbox.

  2. LDAP for addressing.

  3. It has calender extension (which is not a match to Outlook though).

  4. News group support.

  5. Addressbook.

  6. Mail filter mechanism.

7. extensions to enahce its functionality.

  1. Junk mail filter

Extensions is something which comprehensively beats outlook. Yes, there are outlook plugins, but they are no match to Thunderbird extensions. You can configure your mail client much better with extensions.

Junk mail filter automatically filters mails, which thunderbird thinks are junk, into junk mail folder. This feature can be trained by user by telling thunderbird explicitly about junk/non junk mails. I have used it earlier but, personally, did not find it that useful. May be for those who get lot of spam mails.

There are lot more, but I simply can't remember it all :)
