Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 Reviews

Best editor for the developers
Jun 26, 2015 02:46 PM 4486 Views

Macromedia Dreamweaver is an Adobe product.  It is a editor tool primarily used  for web designer and developers.

Being a software developer, I am habituated using it since last 8-10 years. My faculty first instructed me to use this effective tool when I was a new kid in the world of web development. My seniors were also very fond of this software and used it extensively for writing codes and designing web pages.

Macromedia Dreamweaver is not a heavy weight software does not occupy much space in the computer hard drive.  The installation process is quite  easy and is completed with in few minutes. The editor works in a lightning speed and works fine even if the RAM is low on a system.

It is having some very useful and unique features which makes my work hassle free and fast.  I am breaking up the useful features of this software below:

1) It has three window tab(Code, Design, Split). So on code window you can see only code and on design window you can see the output of the webpage being designed without running the file into the browser. So it is quite  easy to complete the design work by viewing only design tab. And on split tab half of the window displays code and other half shows design. So you can view both your design and coding simultaneously.

2) This editor provides suggestion for programming as well as design work. It provides PHP, Javascript function suggestion as well as  CSS tags suggestion for the programmers and the designers. So, the working process becomes super fast and easy for the workers to memorize the function and tags.

3) It also  detects errors in the written code as well as on design tags. So you can rectify syntax error without testing the file in the server. So it saves lot of time time for the workers.

4) This editor supports all types of files to work on like PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS, XML, JSP, ASP etc.

5) The editor  provides inbuilt template design so user could use these templates for their design requirement  and customize the template too.

6) The editor has lots of tools to create HTML pages with forms, tables, paragraph, etc.So. it is quite easy to create HTML page using this editor even for the beginner with out much knowledge on HTML.

7) The look and feel of the editor is very nice and trendy. It is user friendly and easy to navigate.

.

I am fond of this software and can not think beyond it as far as designing and developing work is concerned . It is equally useful for both the beginners and experienced designers and programmers . I sincerely recommend this software.

I miss written review on dreamweaver which is supposed to be in flash mx link.but its ok I written new one on dreamweaver mx on older versions 3's link.

Dreamweaver MX is first choice of any web designer.why?Since it's Old released version 3 Dreamweaver Team beats thier opponents Adobe Golive and Microsoft frontpage.Current Version MX is much more improved and still it is fully customizable that let us modify it's menus and keyboard shortcuts etc.Well in this review I will also point you to the free alternatives of the dreamweaver,Because Software is costly so we definitely need some free alternative.

Well what makes Dreamweaver so diffrent?

Well this question will be easily answered by any web designer who uses dreamweaver a lot.Well to squeeze more information from Dreamweaver software I concentrate on some must have features that web designer needs.I will also comapre Dreamweaver with Adobe's Go live and MicroSoft- Frontpage to let you undersatnd the power of Dreamweaver.

Layers:-

This feature is one of the best I think for any designer.Why?check it out on Dreamweaver. Then you will understand where other softwares like Adobe golive lacks.Moving Layer to any part of the page is not so easy with Adobe golive but it is easy with Dreamweaver.And I hardly doubt latest realese of frontpage support it or not.Layer feature can also be used to convert your layers to tables,when you satisfied with arrangement of site.This feature is fairly simple to use.

Tables:-

Tables are useful in making a web-page that carry lot of text so aligning is important for those pages.Handling tables is very difficult with Adobe Golive but it is easy with MS frontpage & Dreamweaver.Dreamweaver can create,modify,colour tables also row and column level manipulation is also possible.You can add table within table without need to stretch your page.This happens worst with GOlive a lot.

Frames:-

Working with Frames in MS Frontpage & Adobe golive is easy.But frame handling job makes so simple with help of dreamweaver.Any novice can work on frames site after reading the tutorials on the web.If you are novice with frames just check out thier help file to know how frame works as thier help file is made with three frames.Frame inspector shows you how your frames are arranged and how they will work.Well these are the some points I found common with any web designing software.But Let's Checkout Errors first.

Errors:-

When compared with Adobe go live 4.0,GoLive installed succesfully on pc,changes file association of windows notepad.Notepad's text document works wrong,clicking on text file it will tell you the above path is wrong and it will even open the Notepad window.But warns you every time you open it.It wants you to open text document through GoLive.Uninstalling Golive and reloacating the path for notepad will solve your problem.

This Error never found with Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage.

Well dreamweaver got one best feature that I think adobe golive and frontpage both lacks,Dreamweaver can cleanup MS WORD's HTML if you created page first in MS WORD.

Now let me tell you about its other features.

Features:-

Object pallete let us Insert objects like Flash,Images,Roll over menu,activex,java applet and other server side includes.etc.Yes you can insert layers and tables from this pallete.

Property inspector is useful for editing properties of selected elements.Well Adobe Go live also shows this type of infromation and it is also easy to use.Front-page also carry properties for tables in this way.

Templates feature is also nice addon if you think you are working on same background but with diffrent text data.You can even edit tags wihtin the quick tag edit panel.

Making forms is bit difficult for newbie's but Checking some cgi websites like cgispy.com etc.let them know how form works.

Timeline ?:-

Timeline can be used to create animation that do not require external plug-ins as timeline uses dynamic html to change layer or source of image after intial loading of page.This is excellent feature.

Publish feature:-

Publishing your website is very easy as FTP client can be found within the software and it works with most of free hosting services.If you think you want diffrent software for FTP then don't go for Softwares like Cute_FTP or WS_FTP just point your browser to the https://zipgenius.it and download free utility ''FTPGenius''.if you want a free FTP utilty, then this is the only Free one you want.

Misc:-

Help file supplied with dreamweaver is good for newbies as well as advanced users to know about software and it's New features.And Mystery Still I Don't know How to Use Sitespring........

Alternative:-

This software is expensive so Amatures/Self employed Peoples and Freelancers can't afford it.

So my advice for such users is to download some other softwares like IMS Web Dwarf from https://virtualmachines.com

Works simmilar to Netobject's Fusion.

Or Hvrsoft's html editor from https://hvrsoft.com (Check this site if it is still freeware)

Or try this DHE Editor https://hexagora.com/en_details_dhe.asp

DHE Editor Works between Frontpage and Dreamweaver.But Frontpage is easy to use because We use MS word A lot whose features can be found in Frontpage.

Well send me E-mail if you know any better free-editor than mentioned above.I would love to hear from you.

Well for Designing Newbies there is one good site to learn graphic-animation-Web designing from tutorials.

Check out https://trainingtools.com/

For Mac users I think dreamweaver is better choice than Adobe's Golive Or old SiteMill or PageMill application.

Well if you jumped from version 3 to directly to MX then you will confuse about Panel sets,then you and I have same problem We need to practice on this.

Finaly This software is excellent for Web Designers with stretched budget.

Go for it.:)

Weaves a Designers Dreamsite

I was introduced to Dreamweaver (Henceforth referred to as DW) 3.0 (the current version being 6.0 - its called Dreamweaver MX) somewhere in 1999. It had been already 3 years of using the web and 1 year of doing web design. Until DW came in, web design was just screen designs for me, which entailed a lot of hard work trying to take the design through to production. Dreamweaver has totally changed the work scenario!! Needless to say, all for good.

Well - if one is on the lookout for a software that is WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) there are many options. Microsoft Frontpage, Adobe GoLive, Dreamweaver, ...many others. But believe me, no other tool even compares to Dreamweaver. DW is far far ahead of any other tool - in terms of usability, in terms of capability, and also in terms of expandability. And over every newer version, DW has only grown by leaps and bounds. In its latest version - DW MX - Macromedia has built in even functions to handshake with database, write scripts and develop dynamic websites. This is awesome as it gives you options to work on most of the available platforms. You name it and its there - asp, jsp, HTML, XHTML, XML, ASP, ASP.NET, JSP, PHP, and ColdFusion.

If we see it from the basics - as you start to work on DW, you dont write a single piece of code, and you already have made tables, frames (frames have their own limitations, and so are not recommended), layers, timelines, javascripts, actions, and much more. I am personally more comfortable handling CSS using DW. It makes CSS much more understandable. And what with WYSIWYG, you can try out everything thats possible.

Then there is the Sitemap. This is one feature that makes life lot lot easier. Even people who have used other tools envy this one feature. Imagine just moving files from folder to folder and still not caring about the path changes! This is because DW takes care of path changes when you simply pick files and move them across in the SITEMAP. Smae goes with RENAMING. Just rename your files and all associated links get updated.

Version 4 onwards DW also has the history tool. Using this, one can go back to any step and undo and then restart. Also, customized actions can be created from history tool for repeatitive jobs. Besides numerous javascipts that DW writes on its own, one can also add customized scripts. And this feature has been extended like never before in DW MX - by means of snippets.

One major leap that DW has taken in its MX version is ACCESSIBILITY. This bridges the gap and brings in features that a tool should have towards creating practical websites.

Its so natural, that the web designers across the globe are always waiting to grab the newest version of DW as soon as it is released!!

One minor problem though: The color picker of DW is problematic. It has that superior feature of picking a color even from outside the application window - only,it doesn't pick the right color! And as far I know it, this problem never existed in version 3.0!

Highly Recommended. No second thought. Dont even consider going in for any other tool in this category.

It's My Dream Web Editor
Apr 13, 2002 10:53 AM 3848 Views

I came acrros Macromedia Dreaweaver in the year of 1999, and Dreamweaver was in its 1st version. From that day to this day Dreamweaver is changed lot, Dreamweaver is now more userfriendly and alo gives lots of features. I am using two Web Designing software 1) Macromedia Dreamweaver 2) Microsoft Visual InterDev . I am using this two softwares for there special reasons. Now I am going to focus on Macromedia Dreamweaver and it's version 3. I will write review on Microsoft Visual InterDev later on... So here is somethig about Macromedia Dreaweaver 3.

What is it? : Dreamweaver is a product of Macromedia company, The company which has developed great softwares like Flash. Dreamweaver is an application to develope Web Sites.

Userfriendlyness : When I started usin Dreamweaver with it's version 1, it was not much userfriendly as other are having like Microsoft Fronpage Editor. I was avoiding to use Dreamweaver 1. Then after few months I came across the Dreamweaver 2 It was slightly changed and I seen that Userfriendlyness is not much improved. After one year when I came across Macromedia Dreamweaver 3, I thought It will

be changed because they have taken lots of time in Develpoing this new version. I installed it.. and Run it... What I see :) Surprise.... It was so much Userfriendly that I can't belive.... There are total three

tool bars each has diffrent function and also It has great environment to develope Web Sites.

Installation : Installation of Dreamweaver varies from it's version to version. Dreamweaver 1 was taking less than 1 minutes to complete installation, Dreamweaver 2 was taking about 2 minutes to complete installation, and Dreaweaver 3 has taken about 4 minutes to complete installation.

Help : All the versions of Macromedia Dreamweaver is included with the Help files. The help file of Dreamweaver is made in HTML, for that it's Help files are are not taking any time in launching. But when you want to seach any topic you have to click on Search button and

after that If you are using Search feature for the first time than it will take 1 minutes to launch, after using it first time Search feature launches in 10 to 20 seconds, Because they have made the search engine of help file in Java it takes time to load. Help provided in this

application is not much usable.. The help file of Dreamweaver is very much detailed but has so many sub parts that user gets confused where to go and how to go. In each and every parent topic there is a interactive help file which is made in Shockwave. And it's really a great interactive tutorial. They have covered each and every feature of the Dreamweaver.

Tool Bars: There are total three diffrent tool bars you can see in Dreamweaver. 1) Object Toolbar 2) Property Toolbar 3) Launcher Toolbar. So now lets take a look at all of this tool bars.

1) Object Toolbar: Object tool bar is used to place various controls in to the web site. You can use drag and drop method to add the controls in to your Web Page. Objects has lots of controls like buttons , text boxes, rule , tabel and lots.. You can also add Flash ,

Active X, Shockwave and Java Applet file from the object tool bar.

2) Property Toolbar: This is a great tool bar to change the property of the various controls in your web pages. for example suppose that you have added button in to your web page, with the help of property bar you can change the caption of the button and name of the button. And suppose that you have insered text box in to your web page, than with the help of property bar you can change the width of the text box and also a maximum value of characters to be entred in to the text box. You can also use this property bar to change the color of the text and also to change the font size of the text and also to give link to the images, text and other things.. It is also used to give proper filename to Flash , Active X , Shockwave and Java Applet files.

3) Launcher Bar: Launcher tool bar is also a nice tool bar. Suppose that you want to check the source code of your page, click on the button HTML Source placed in this tool bar to see the source code of the page. It has also CSS style button to give the style to the page. Behaviour button is used to give the certain type of the

behaviour to the certain type of diffrent controls and also to a text. There is SIte button which is not much used but it's very help full while you are planning to give Site Map to your users.

Menus : Menus given in Dreamweaver is superb.. Thet have given each and every menu proper names and it is not very hard to find any thing from the menu. If by mistake you have closed any of the above tool bar(s), than you can open them again from the Window menu. It has lots of short cut keys to use various diffrent type of functions.

Scripting & Programming: Scripting support in Dreamwevaer is really very very good. I like the scripting support of the Dreamweaver, If you are not abel to script your self than there is certain options so that Dreamweaver will make it's script for you. But if you have done any mistake while scripting Dreamweaver does not show where you have done mistakes. Programming support is not good in the Dreamweaver that is why I am also using Microsoft Visual InterDev. If you are using Dreamweaver for the programming than it is good to certain point but

not after that, the impressive part of this is that you can design your web application in this, but when its time to programme your application its very difficult in Dreamweaver. But it's good for the beginners to use the programming support of the Dreamweaver.

For Whom? : Because Dreamwevaer is so much userfriendly and also a capable of WYSIWYG (WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET), it's for everyone. Dreamweaver is for all types of users from begineers to the Advanced users. It's good for the Web Designing and also for the scripting but not for the programming the web.Dreamweaver is still not fully supporting the latest technology like XML for that it is hard for me to use Dreamweaver while developing sites in XML.

That's all of the review...

I hope so you all like this review. Please Rate my review and also please leave the comments.

The best there is

This is my first op on Mouthshut, so forgive me if I offend anyone, because I've just ploughed straight in.

The days when the mobile telephone was the ultimate status symbol have long since gone. These days, the thing you have to have if you're in with the In Crowd is a website (and a domain name if you can stir your stumps) and if you're serious about building your own site, then you will undoubtedly have happened upon the subject of this evening's op from the skilful pen of the opinion writer laureate, dave27. What DO you mean, ''What am I talking about?'' You know it's gotta be the weaver of dreams.

This splendid series of application programs is now up to version 4, but I thought I'd offer my thoughts on version 3, which is what I use.

Dreamweaver is a surprisingly easy to use website development tool which allows you to build a page in much the same way that you would write a Word document which includes graphics, and then the program develops the HTML (hypertext markup language) code on which the website is built automatically. You never need to know how to write HTML yourself (although there are advantages if you can edit the code) and I can't emphasis strongly enough how extremely easy and intuitive this all is.

There is, of course, one extremely bad aspect of the DW experience, however, and that, as nearly everyone will be able to tell you is the price. A new copy of Dreamweaver on its own will run you nearly £270 including VAT, while a package with the Macromedia graphics design program would stack up at around 400 notes.

You undoubtedly get extremely good programs for that money, but it's an awful lot of dough to shell out if you just want to mess about and design a few web pages. Conversely if you want to get into websites in a big way or even professionally then DW is virtually mandatory and you can't manage without it. So it's a case of you pays your money, you takes your choice.

Version 3 came to the market around March 2000, which was a couple of years after the first version of DW saw the light of the day and it served to bolster Macromedia's monopoly of the high end web authoring market. PC Pro's write up of the new version was fairly typical of the reviews at the time: ''For Web professionals and enthusiasts alike, Dreamweaver has been a godsend ever since its introduction. The way it balanced design and layout elements with an elegant interface and a comprehensive set of useful tools has secured it a place on PC Pro's A List ever since.''

The hype in this particular case is thoroughly merited and I have to say that DW3 is extremely good for both novice and professional alike, as it combines extreme simplicity and ease of use with extremely powerful and flexible features.

I cut my teeth on DW2 and learned (in my bumbling, shambolic way) how to design rudimentary, rough and ready web pages with that particular package, which I had as a trial version from one of the freebie disks you get on the PC mags. After the 30 day trial had ended, I was so absolutely dependent on the package that I immediately went and laid out the necessary to get my sticky mitts on version 3 and found it truly indispensable and very made to measure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just a quick note before we go any further - when I started producing web pages using DW3, I just slung a load of layers slapdash on the canvas, but quickly got to know that though it may look fine and dandy to you on the monitor you designed it on, it can look a really amateurish mess on other monitors or other browsers. One trick you need to learn to make sure the pages come out in the way that you intended is the judicious and well planned organisation of tables to keep your material set out how you want them to look.
DW3 is extremely good at manipulating tables, allowing you to merge and demerge cells exactly how you wish and using nested tables allows you to ensure everything stays exactly where you intended. It's a bit fiddly at first and you need to think about what you are doing, but a little pre-planning is well worth the effort.
Okay, back to the script.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When you open the Dreamweaver package, it closely resembles a graphics package in both style and feel, and once you get used to how everything works, it is probably even easier to use.

There are two interface views - the first is the Site View and the main one is the Design View (tricky stuff this!). The Site View gives an excellent graphical display showing how all the pages link together and relate and is good for keeping an overview of how your site is organised. I have to say that I have never really gotten into using this view and have done all my work in the Design View. It hasn't done me any harm, so rest assured that if you want to, you can get along just fine with just the one interface.

When you first open the Design View, at first it looks EXTREMELY CONFUSING and COMPLICATED, in common with many of the graphics packages. It has a multitude of windows and tools palettes and unless you can get them organised properly, you can get a very fussy and ugly looking desktop where it's difficult to understand what it all means.

The key palette you need to know about is the object properties window, which allows you to do all stuff like formatting, picture descriptions, URL links, alternate text for your images, etc and if you use it properly this is a great helper with productivity.

The way you set up the pages is by the use of layers, and as I've said already the best way to ensure control is the use of tables, so I normally just open one layer, which I anchor at the top left hand corner of the page and then insert a table into it.

If you need to insert an image you just Insert Image at the appropriate location, remembering of course that the image will have to be located in the site folder along with the pages. You also need to remember that all the file names need to be completely lower case as capital letters pay absolute havoc with Dreamweaver. One key tip for decent organisations is to dump all your image files in a separate sub folder in your main site file and this can help productivity significantly.

To insert text anywhere, all you do is simply type.

Another immensely productive tool is the template. You can set up a template and base all the pages in your site upon it in order to ensure a standard look and feel for your site. This can save you an awful lot of time, particularly if you're setting up a lot of pages, but you need to bear in mind that you won't be able to vary the page title, description, keywords and meta tags between different pages without detaching them first from the template. Oh well, a small price to pay for such great productivity, but you will probably come to curse this particular issue.

DW3 is excellent for setting up frame based sites, but again I have to say that I've never been fond of frames and normally stick to flat pages.

DW3 also gives you the facility to edit the HTML code itself so if you're an experienced programmer, you can make it look even more exactly how you want. There is also the option to customise the menus and overall set up if you're of the inclination, although that's always been a step too far for me.

Okay, those are the main features and facilities you get with DW2. Now, how good is it?

Well, let me tell you, it's BLOODY EXCELLENT, very flexible, powerful and well designed and yet at the same time VERY SIMPLE TO USE once you understand the basic principles and key features. This one gets one of those ultimate dave27 seals of excellence that denotes a best of breed product.

For those of us who learned to code HTML using good old Notebook this application can seem to lessen peoples desire to learn the various techniques required for successful page building because of its vast array of easily navigable and usable tools. I do not subscribe to this however as I have found this editor to be an indispensable piece of authoring software.

Since I started using this software package seven months ago my appreciation for the depth of facilities contained within it has simply increased from one month to the next. The ability to create rollover navigation bars and other such niceties as the ability to use layers put this program head and shoulders its counterparts. The users ability to drag and drop components on the page work surface makes life so much easier when designing the page. Ok, I have to admit I find it annoying when I am editing the script and find the program has inserted extraneous tags but I am willing to put up with this one downer because of what the program can do.

Although very easy for an experienced web author to utilise I would certainly say that this is not an entry level editor by any means. The software makes it easy to create basic pages but to use something as powerful as Dreamweaver 3 to do that simple task is an insult not just to the package but also to its designers. I also believe that people are more likely to be concerned with the learning the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface that Dreamweaver utilises rather than bother to learn the basic coding rules but that is something that people like myself will have to accept.

Macromedia have, through the release of the Dreamweaver series of products, has I believe constructed a market leading product that will establish new web authoring boundaries.

Good effort from macromedia

I think macromedia has proved to the world that, software field is not saturated. It is survival of the fittest. If you come up with good quality product then their is nothing which can stop you.

Launched few years back, with version one of dreamweaver. Everyone at that time thought that it is just one of the few free software available on the net & will disappear after few months as their is no one who can fight microsoft.

But it has beaten the expectation of all & in just 2 years has become a market leader for web technology.

I like to use it as a editor for all internet related files.

It is easy to use & code.I like its code window which can be removed with a click of a button.
