A COOL PLAYER
Just as anyone else, I started hearing music in Windows Media Player and later shifted to Winamp, after some experiments with Sonique, Real Player, Nero Show Time and Jet Audio. But it was only a few days ago, that I found a better option, i-Tunes from Apple computers. For me, this one proved to be a great replacement for Winamp, and a good reason to dispose off the other lesser players.
This software, designed for the iPods, worked with no problems at all in my 64-bit XP, but it may not be working too well with Windows 98 and the other earlier versions even if Windows 2000 can prove to be just OK. This is also available for mobile phones and Macintosh, just take a look at the site for further details.
The major advantage that this program has got is the ability to change the status message of MSN messenger to the name of the song and the album. We could get the same effect in Winamp, but only if we have a plug-in. But it is already in i-Tunes and by showing the song that we are currently listening to, we really let our friends know what our current mood is.
APPLE'S MASTERPIECE
This software also has the options to connect to iPods and transfer music files to the device. There is also the option to connect to the online music store, where you will find lots of more files. The 34.7 MB download for PC is free from the Apple's official site and does provide a great alternative to the traditional audio players, as it is simple and quite easy to use, with no crashes or getting stuck.
The size can be reduced and it will stay on the top corner of the screen, without interfering with your other programs. This will certainly prove useful if you run full screen applications, especially those games which won't support playing your own MP3 to be added to the list, special mention to NFS: Most Wanted (the games like Midnight Club 2 allows to paly user's own Mp3 files).
Even if gaming may not have been part of the list, when iTunes was developed, this one can prove really great, because Winamp had made the gaming experience slow on lots of occasions, and it is just too hard for a gamer to sacrifice the fun just for this one factor.
COOL FUNCTIONS
The functions of iTunes also include recording into a CD, automatically searching for MP3 files in the whole PC, just like any other new generation player. It manages a number of lists including Top Rated, Recently Added, Recently Played, Most Played etc which helps you in using the player more efficiently, and listening to only those songs you prefer, depending on your current mood.
This one keeps the record of how many times a song is played, and when it is last played. A few other information displayed includes the rating of the song which you have assigned to it, the artist and the album name and lots more, which can be added in the options menu. There is also the visualizer, which is more than just good looking. With the hot keys, this player is just too easy to operate, and free from all kinds of problems.
FOR THE NEW GENERATION
You can play the songs in the playlist randomly or sequentially. There is also the radio option which lets you access even more songs. It supports a number of file types including MP3, AIFF, WAV, MPEG-4, Midi, AAC, thus performing as a video player too, which makes me wonder if it acn be a replacement for Apple's own Quick Time player. While the release of iTunes 4.8 introduced the video support, iTunes have come a long way to each the the current version, iTunes 6.0.3.
Even if all the files in Hard Disc are already present in the player, you can add new files by simply dargging them into the player to the exact position, in the order you want it to be played. Even if you use the open with option, it will still stay in the playlist. But if you delete a file, you have to delete it seperately from the iTunes or else you may find one unplayable file simply staying in the list.
This may be one of the most innovative audio players of this generation. It will be a great option for not only the ones who own an iPod, but also for the ones who are looking for a player which is simple, easy to use, but is very much effective and provides you with all the functions, including the ability to play even a few video files, certainly worth a try for the ones who spend lots of time listening to music.
