FlashGet

FlashGet is software of Amaze soft and is used to download files from Internet. We face two biggest problems while downloading files, speed and management. If we have ever waited forever for files to download from slow connection, or been cut off midway, or just cannot keep track of download, FlashGet is the best download manager. It can split downloaded files into sections, downloading each section simultaneously. This, coupled with FlashGet’s powerful management features, helps us take control of downloads.

Operating System

The FlashGet is designed for all Microsoft Operating Systems like Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

User Friendly Software

It is very simple and easy to install it. While installing FlashGet at your system, exit all the running programs. Now run Setup.exe and follow the instructions.

That was the way to install FlashGet. Now, whenever your browser is asked to download a file, FlashGet will be launched automatically to download the desired file. Click on OK and the download process will start. Some times it will not start automatically then you will have to see your browser settings or try to download manually.

You can start the following methods to download file;

When you click on a URL, FlashGet monitor to see whether its extension matches the ones you have set in Monitor type box. Which can by follow as Tools – Options – Monitor – Monitor Type. So, the URL will be added to the job list in the main FlashGet window. For greater control, you can set FlashGet monitor browser clicks only when the ALT key is held down by simply selecting the “Use ALT key” check box. Some web sites do things differently, which can make FlashGet’s monitoring either not start a file that it should, or incorrectly take over for a file that it should not. If you hold both the CTRL and ALT keys down when clicking, FlashGet will get any link that is clicked. This is useful to download an image or some other type of file that is not usually handled by FlashGet.

If you use Internet Explorer (any version) you can download file or files by right clicking on the web page. FlashGet has added two options to Internet Explorer’s right click context menu. “Download all by FlashGet” and “Download using FlashGet”. When you will select “Download all by FlashGet” it will download all the links within the page. A box will appear entitled “Select URL”, which will give you the option to exclude any links you do not want to download. “Download using FlashGet” selecting this will download only the single link you right clicked on.

“Monitor clipboard” tells FlashGet to monitor for URLs that you click on or copy to the clipboard. When copying a valid URL to clipboard, the URL will be added to the job list, ready for download.

“Drag & Drop” is the easiest method. Drag any URL from the browser window to Drop zone or the main window. FlashGet support dragging and dropping multiple links from Internet Explorer.

The last method is to manually enter URL. For this click on Jobs and select “New download”.

FlashGet’s another most important feature is managing files (aside from its excellent downloading speed). FlashGet categorizes files into categories. Every download file sorted in categories will be moved to that specified directory. For example every job saved in the category MP3 (there are four default categories, Software, Games, Driver and MP3) will be moved to C:\download\mp3. When placing files into MP3 FlashGet directory, the actual file itself will be moved to C:\download\mp3 on your hard drive. If you do not specify any category when downloading files will be moved to “downloaded” folder.

You can create new categories or subcategories by right clicking on directory “Downloaded”. Also you can move files from one category to another.

FlashGet downloads three jobs at one time. You can increase or decrease the number of jobs depending on your Internet connection speed. For this click on “tools – options – connection” and then specify the Max simultaneous jobs in “Limit”.

Great Download Manager
Apr 01, 2003 10:56 PM

I have been using this for quite some time, over 1 year and I love the program. I tried various other proggies like Gozilla, Getright etc. but none of them work as well as Flashget. No frills, does the job, easy on the system resources and the best thing I like about the program is a little square window which keeps you updates on the progress of the download, you can move it wherever you want and a double click will open the program. Very intuitive interface and easy on the eyes, not flashy like Gozilla or DAP. One click will enable shutdown on completion of the download. All in all a great program and Highly Recommended!

FlashGet Rocks
Feb 23, 2003 01:08 PM

Couple of years ago, there were very few of the download managers available. Mostly GetRight or Gozilla were being used. Well, they were fine at that time, considering the competition. But then came download accelerator (DAP) to the scene and it changed it all. With all the neat features (which now-a-days are commonly available in any download manager), it became the most popular download manager.

Even today, download accelerator has the same robustness and user friendliness as it had in the previous versions. It also has a facility known as “Always Resume”, which can resume downloading even from those sites that don’t support resuming. But this feature is not worth mentioning, simply ‘coz it’s available only to registered users (which we probably can’t afford. let's just use the ad-supported version).

Now, let’s have a look et “FlashGet” (version 1.40). Well, it has all the regular features that any download manager (including download accelerator plus 5.x) like, multi-threading (simultaneous downloads), file management or organization, mirror-search, automatic dial, hang-up, schedule, integration with IE and Netscape (and even with Opera), and much more…

Now, let’s compare download accelerator and flashget (and let’s forget about GetRight and Gozilla as they are not even closer to DAP or FG).

-- In first look, the interface of flashget looks a bit clumsy, but it gets better as u work more with it. The “user guide” given along with flashget is very easy and simple to understand (not a feature available in all the software’s available today).

-- Both support, non registered versions which are supported by ads.

-- Has a unique feature to control speed of download. The speed can be set to “Unlimited” for utilizing the full power, “Manual” for exactly specifying the speed to be utilized (can be used to limit the speed so that remaining speed can be used by other software accessing the internet), or “Automatic” for automatically sharing the speed between itself and other software accessing internet (can be used to surf while downloading).

-- Can download files even from Freedrive.com . This is a feature which probably no other download manager provides for.

-- Supports “Opera”. Well, this browser is a magical little piece of software. The heck with IE, Netscape, Mozilla and even other multi-window browsers using IE in background. Due to the popularity, flashget has even added the support for this browser.

-- Talking ‘bout browsers… well, flashget has its own site explorer. Use it to leech files from sites (can be used when downloading all the images from a website) and accessing and downloading from FTP sites.

-- Well, there are still so many features, this review would have to be a big article to include it al. Let you be a internet newbie, or a techie with a dial-up connection or a fiber optics line, u al can enjoy using it. So I suggest you try this download manager and I’m sure u’ll ask this to yourself, “How did I manage without it till now?”

Remember: There are reports for spyware being found in some versions of GetRight and Gozilla! You all can confirm this by using a anti-spy software like Ad-aware from Lavasoft.

Flashing the Download Meter
Feb 20, 2003 04:58 PM

Internet has always been a place where I have enjoyed and being in it gives me more knowledge about things which I never ever used to know before. It has become a place where I daily checkin to discover

something new, something which could give me knowledge, help me simplify my life and help in getting the job down faster.

OK I am not running away from the review, but just wanted you to know what Internet really meant to me.

My early days on the net was just about having fun and discovering some more sites so that I could increase my daily net time but that little bit and have fun that little bit.But soon I released that this all was leading no further than the increasing amount of telephone bill and my DAD’s anger growing with time.

Then as and when time passe by the Net still seemed to be my fascination, and I loved spending time with him/her but now I knew how much the time really meant and how I should fold my finger so that I get the most.

Those time downloading huge files coming to nearly 4 - 5 MB lead to lots of waste of time and money, so my quest began to search for utility that would provide me help to do the task done with the time limit.

I tried out GetRight but evaluation types are not my choice, DAP also lacked the taste because it as adding the block on the taskbar.GoZilla also has the same problem so all these problems finally led me to the solution, basically two solutions one was NetAnts and the second was Flashget.

I would love to tell the story why I realized that NetAnts was not worthy, but I am hear to write about FlashGet, on which I still haven’t started, have I?

Welcome to Flashget

Flashget is a download Manager which helps you in the basic task of downloading files from the Internet be it from the http server or the ftp server.

So now the question comes what is download Manager and why anyone would need it.

I don’t know about anyone, but I sure can tell you that everyone needs one, why?Well would everyone not like to have a software that would save time on the Internet(talking to the downloading type).

Download Manager basically are types of software which work on the files floating on the Internet, they do it in a way which Internet Explorer’s Downloading does not do.

The are capable of saving the downloading time. They retrieve the files asked for splitting them into various part.

You can download the Software from https://amazesoft.com.

For this you will have to waste some initial time with Internet Explorer, but it is worth it, I would say.

What FlashGet does

So you want to download some files from the Internet. All you have to tell Flashget is where the file is located specifically giving the filename of the file is important.

So now Flashget looks for the file on the server and makes log(information file) about the software, it splits the file locally into various parts and works on the specific part individually.

So now if 5 work together on a single file will the file not be download at a faster rate(work be done faster).

You can specify the number of part to be made to FlashGet and it will act accordingly.

If the file is too large, you can download some part today and the rest tomorrow or even days to come, take you time!

What I Like about this software

1)Interface - Flashget does not have a jazzy interface like other software, but has a clean and a neat interface.

The icons are specific to the Function so one does not find it confusing to work with.

2)Better control on Clipboard - Flashget has a good control over the things on the windows clipboard, so now if you have the location copied from the browser, all you have to do is click on New button and the text shall automatically be there.

This function helps in providing comments on the specific file you are downloading.

3)Better Compatibility - As I said before I have tried up many software for downloading, but of all these software Flashget seems to be capable on combining with every browser I have used, be it IE, Mozilla or Opera.

But to make it combine with Opera you will have to download a small plug-in available at their web site.

4)Better Download speed - Flashget when compared to other download manager does the job of downloading faster.I can surely say this by my experience with this software.

And this is one reason I had to leave Netants. How it does the job faster??I think it is because of the mirror which is search for on the Internet, or because of the PING function it carriers to check the download speed from each server and then selecting the best.

5)Does not put load on the taskbar - Flashget does all the job of downloading within itself, notifying you about all the downloads within a single window. So now you don’t have a separate window for each download task, so you taskbar is far less crowded.

What more...

Flashget prepares a database of all the files you have downloaded so even if you uninstall and reinstall the software only keeping the database file can do much of a difference.

It can also import broken downloads.

The recent versions all supports Skin but ads asking you to register seem to be a bit annoying.

But that is a less price to pay compared to what the software can do.

Conclusion

FlashGet sure is a type of software you would really like to try as it sure can save you lot of time, now you can download the huge time taking as much time as you want, also the job done is at a faster rate.

Internet Explorer does not support Resuming of download, but Flashget sure does.

Flashget or DAP
Feb 07, 2003 09:17 AM

Friends,

Let it be Flashget, GoZilla or DAP or any download accelerator. If you study the method they operate the actual question of comparison will not arise at all. As for as download speeds are concerned they are dependant in the following factors.

  1. The Bandwidth through which the download server is connected

  2. The Number of users connected to the download server while you are downloading

  3. The Bandwidth through which you are connected with the Net

  4. The number of users connected with your ISP at the time you are connected

  5. The Location of the download server or the number of hops from your IP to the Download server's IP. The lesser, the Better. The next time you try a server try ketying the following command in your Start-->Run--> command line

TRACERT https://yourwebsite.com

and see the route it takes to the server.

  1. Most of all, the ability of the server to resume downloads

  2. The simultaneous number of client connections allowed to the server from a Single IP. Mostly it will be a maximum of four.

Now let's see how all this doenload managers work. They all connect with a single thread to the server first. Then the Accelerator queries the server for the resume support and then it communicates for the simultaneous client connections and if the server supports more than it sends further requests to start simultaneous connections. Now, the actual intelligence of the softwares is to split the file in to the number of simultaneous connections and once downloaded it re-assembles all the files to create the actual file.

I hope this doesnt confuse a lot, but My opinion is that all the softwares can produce only a similar result. As for as Flashget is concerned, There are two advantages. Number one, it shows the clear activity happening through a log and most fo all, it's easy to crack.

Faaaasssssttttttt Downloads !!!!
Jan 31, 2003 06:31 PM

Hi

This great piece of software has been very instrumental in really fast download of software. You have the facility to spawn many threads , which splits the download in parallel.

For people who know networking will tell you paraallel threads will spawn multiple connection which can really speed up

The GUI is very easy to use and the software pretty much gives the std features for ftp settings.

On the down side there is facility for doing folder downloads from HTTP sites. u can use the site explorer but then again it has very limited use.

enjoy !

Really works in a flash
Jan 31, 2003 03:23 PM

Well this is one download software which is really best of the best (best of the bunch), u can download with maximum 10 partitions to a file to be downloaded which is the maximum any software till date has given to the users ,moreover the download speed is good 7 kbps which is considered good as compared to other download utilities , the only disadvantage is that it will fetch all ur net speed and u cant really on other sites, while downloading through this utility but I think that is the best point in it , it works with the maximum speed provided and really makes downloads a cake walk

Publover at it again !!
Jan 30, 2003 08:25 PM

Ok how useful are these so called download managers who promise excellent download speeds and fast downloads . Well the basic facts of downloads being that what ever software you may load the download speed is judged by the speed of your network connection . Then the question is how do software like Flashget or getright help me . Easy , they cache the information about the site from where the download starts and in the case a connection is broken they can reconnect at a later stage and pick up the download from where it got left out .The reason why we find it apparently faster than the IE downloads or downloads from the browser is because of the process itself . Downloads from a browser will involve the browser executable to take up processor time and spawn seperate processes. Finally the executable in question is the browser itself . You start a download and then go on browsing sites so since the executable now has to do 2 things all of a sudden it slows down . Third party software are seperate executables and spawn seperate processes so they are slightly faster . The other reason is that software like Flashget block some amount of network bandwidth for their use , this again helps in slightly speeding up the download times .

The browsers also try to download a file as a whole while these software split the files up for easier downloads.

That was as far as the technical description went . Now for the software to use . I have found flashget to be extremely user friendly and easy to operate . Eventhough I work as an IT professional I somehow found that I almost required a PHd to operate getright. OVerall going by the current internet trend as well , I would rate Flashget over its rivals

Flashget - 'The' Download Manager.
Jan 29, 2003 11:08 PM

Flashget - 'The' Download Manager....

Frustrated with slow speeds, disconnections, 'broken' downloads? These are some of the problems faced by a dial-up Internet user. If you have suffered the agony of waiting for hours for your download to complete and then when it is almost all over, lost all of it just because you got disconnected; then don't you worry, Flashget is meant for you.

What is Flashget? How does it boost download speed?

Flashget is a download manager that can split download files into a maximum of 10 sections, download each section simultaneously and in the process make the most of the bandwidth available to you. It makes sure that all of the bandwidth is efficiently utilized.

Speed

The software claims to increase your download speed from 100% to 500%. I am not sure of the stats but I can assure you that it really really increases the speed a lot. Flashget exploits the available bandwidth to such an extent that your browsing speed will reduce drastically. Hang on; don't jump to conclusions. You can still browse when downloading. For this you are provided with an option to set a speed limit for the downloads. If you don't want to browse you can allow Flashget to optimize your download speed to the maximum by unchecking this option.

Resume, Site Explorer, Batch Download etc.

Another excellent feature of the software is that it allows you to resume broken downloads. It allows to add batch downloads. (Downloading a series of files with common filenames except for one or two letters i.e., usually numbers) It also has a handy site explorer that lets you explore FTP or HTTP servers. The site explorer acts much like a Windows Explorer .

Other Features

For all downloads you are provided with practically all information about the download within one window i.e., Status, Resume, Name, Size, Completed, Percent, Elapsed, Left, Speed, Num, Retry, URL, Comment, Create time, Complete time. Downloading from sites that require authorization can also be done easily. Just type in your username and password in the download properties and the software will complete the necessary authorization process.

Ease of Use

The software has a simple, neat interface. No excess, unwanted beautification. The version 1.3 (I don't know much about the older versions) of the software integrates well with both Internet Explorer as well as Netscape Navigator. It requires a plug-in for integration with Opera. So what? It's freely downloadable.

Drawbacks

Flashget too has its drawbacks. It is ad-sponsored software. You can use it for free, no registration is required. However, you can register it for ad-free operation if you want. Until then you will have to suffer the annoying pop-up windows reminding you to register the software.

Conclusion

This is as far as I know the best download manager. I don't ned to say more as the software speaks for itself. Get one copy for youself as soon as possible.

Want more Speed?
Jun 05, 2002 04:18 PM

Internet is an endless, infinite, immeasurable quantity of information. For example go to any search engine type say ‘Astronomy’ and wait for the web page to update. The result is thousands (minimum) of links to WebPages with information on various aspects of Astronomy like Tutorials on identifying constellations, beautiful astral images of Galaxies, Nebulas, Planets, and research papers for serious physicists. It is not practical to view all articles, tutorials, and images online because of various reasons.

Firstly there is not enough time to browse through at one go. If we open too many pages at a time which we do normally while surfing we tend to forget what we were doing some time back. (e.g. While the images are loading we start reading emails, then articles on MouthShut and at the end of it may be images.) So the link is not there. If we are to view a big file then because of the pathetic loading speed lot of images are not displayed once the host server times out. So we are made to Refresh the page or right click on the small red cross at the site of image frame and click Show picture.

So is the scenario really that bad?

The point is how do you get this big information without facing above-mentioned problems. The only solution to the problem (/s) is downloading all material on your hard disk and using it in your leisure time or as the time permits.

That’s not the end of it though. The problem actually starts here. If you are downloading a 5MB mp3 song (back to music, Tongue-In-Cheek please bear with me, don’t get bored) using default-downloading software depending on the connection and time you merely get 3 Kbps speed. The source server times out soon (for security) and you’re left with half of the file, which you can’t save. As the downloading demand grows it is difficult to keep track the data in all forms.

Thus Speed and Management become two important terms.

FlashGet(Also referred as JetCar) is one of the few Downloading Accelerator software which solves above two most celebrated problems.

Two years back my friend recommended me this program for downloading mp3s. I was using GetRight at that time without much success. Go!Zilla was the other disappointment. I downloaded free 0.92 version from their website. Since then I have downloaded about 1 GB of data with the help of FlashGet. I will discuss some of the distinct features of FlashGet below.

Features:

Speed

The design of FlashGet involves splitting of files in to multiple sections, and downloading all parts simultaneously there by increasing speed from 100% to 500%.

The default splitting parameter is 5. You can set it to a maximum of 10 from Tools >>Default Downloading Properties menu. But I would suggest you to keep it 5 for average 56Kbps connection.

Management

Another great feature is management of downloaded files. You can create many categories in addition to default 4 categories Software, Games, driver, Mp3 to keep your files for easy and quick access.

Control

If you are downloading multiple files and simultaneously browsing websites then the first one could affect your surfing speed. So the Speed Limit Can be set to keep your surfing going.

Queue

This feature enables you to optimize or rather maximize Internet use by queuing up your downloads. The queuing limit can also be set. So anything above that is hung up till the top order tasks are finished.

Schedule

Possible downloads can be scheduled any time of your choice. The astonishing feature about the programme is the continuance of downloads from the point they were cut of midway. So even Power Failure(crucial for suburbanites), disconnection can’t stop you from achieving the desired. However this is one of the basic features of all similar softwares.

Interface

The user interface is simple, easy and attractive. The status messages, icons, amount downloaded, time left, size, URL make your life much easy. The cute little Drop Zone box gives you a moving graph of the downloading data. Just bringing your mouse pointer pops out a message showing amount downloaded and name of file. Honestly it can’t be simplified than this.

These are just some of the features FlashGet offers. There are hell lots of other like Selecting Language from 33 available (except Hindi), Proxy Server selection, Toolbar, Color Customization option, Mirror Search for searching fastest server for your download, Automatic Dialing, Hanging Up, Shutting when not around. (Not suitable for Home User where Internet comes with a price to pay, Yes THE PHONE BILL!) And much, much more technical advantages!

I feel FlasGet is most underrated Accelerator program over other competitors like I mentioned GetRight, Go!Zilla. All famous music sites recommend these two over FlashGet. In spite of this it has been an award winning Software.

I have been using it for almost 2 years and trust me it is the coolest accelerator around.

Go JetCar Go!
