If you are a user who want to use the laptop for professional reasons then this laptop is just fabuous!
It has all the things which one needs now a days: WIFI, harddisk protection. The stuff works like a charm!
If you are going for R51, I will suggest you to get one with bluetooth support also.
Btw, IBM has different models(e.g. mine is R51 2887 NQ). For some strange reasons IBM don't fit such extra features which correspond to other models, so please think whether you can stretch your budget a bit and go for the features one time at purchase. I had to go for PCMCIA bluetooth later which I regret now. Also if you are a Java(java ee) programmer I would suggest you go for at least 1GB or more for ultimate experience.
IBM has some fabuous utilities. The one I liked most is ThinkVantage Access Connection. I don't know whether it runs on other laptops but for IBM laptops, you can keep printers/firewall settings/applications for each WLAN/LAN connection. So if I am in office, automatically office printer get selected, file sharing is on. While if I am at home, automatically home printer gets selected. On public WLANs I can preconfigure that I don't want file sharing etc so that laptop is not vulnerable!
This laptop can work with Linux variants also! I have tried Debian and Ubuntu and it works fabuous!
