The long last information
Jun 17, 2008 04:05 PM 3127 Views

The long last information it is what I want to write.

Kya bole? What to tell.

My dad used to tell about 3 people, he had as dream girls. Padmini, Sharmila and Waheeda. All are from Black and white to color days and elder to my dad, who is no more now.

Todays grandpa's will be missing her to the core.

She was nice.

She was briiliant actor.

She was homely.

She was gorgeous.

She was friendly.

She  made her presence felt on the screen.

I think the best pair was  Raj Kapoor(?) or Rajendra Kumar(note sure?).

I am from South, cannot add more. But I can tell you that I have seen her sometime in 2004 at Chennai Airport, when she was going to board the flight to Sri Lanka for the shooting of movie Water. Lisa Ray and John Abraham were along with them.

Well, I will write something comparing south stars later.

Introduction :

Waheeda Rehman ( Was sometimes wrongly referred as actor Rehman’s daughter/wife) was born into a traditional Muslim family in Hyderabad on 14 May 1936. She could not undergo proper schooling, due to some infection in her lungs. She was trained in Bharatnatyam and with the consent of her parents, she appeared on  silver screen. She first starredin  the Telugu film Jaisimha (1955), and her second film was Rojulu Maraayi (1955). Then she was spotted by Guru Dutt and her life changed after that.

Love life :She was spotted by Guru Dutt and she got involved in an unsuccessful love affair with him. Together they have given memorable performances. Guru Dutt's marital status ( and problems with his wife Geeta Dutt)  and her success in films outside his production house,  resulted in their break both- personally and professionally.

She married Kamaljit Singh( He also went by the name of Shashi Lekhi) who was also her co-star in the film Shagun. She has beautiful eyes and with her training in  Bharatnatyam makes optimum use of them. I am just fida on her beautiful smile, like a bud blossoming into a flower. I am always mesmerized by her beauty and grace, she has a certain coyness about her. She speaks with her eyes.  She ranks second to Madhubala in my preference list.

Films: In Pyaasa, she plays role of  prostitute named Gulabo ,who is enamoured with Vijay’s (Guru Dutt)  poetry and she falls in love with him. When he is thought as dead, she goes ahead and gets his book published. She played the character with elan.

In Chaudhvi Ka Chand, she plays the character of Jameela. It is a love triangle, two best friends falling in love with the same woman. This film has super hit song “Chaudvi Ka Chand Ho Ya Aaftaab Ho”, the metaphorical description of the beautiful lady.

In Mujhe Jeene Do, she is a courtesan by the name of Chameli, who falls in love with a dacoit and tries to redempt him. The problems she faces when her husband is captured by police and the stuggle faced after is beautifully portrayed by her.

In Guide, she is Rosie the wife of archaeologist who visits, the historical site where Raju(Dev anand) guide is there. She confesses about her love of  dancing and he helps her become a success. This is about Rosie who struggles to comeout of a bad marriage and achieves her dream.

In, Neelkamal, she is Neelkamal in her past life and Sita in her present life. She sleepwalks at nights and she has glimpses of her past life. She has convincingly played the role of a person who sleepwalks, with just the right amount of confusion upon confrontation.

In Phagun, she plays the role of wife who humiliates her husband, and he leaves her and goes away. When her daughter grows up and marries, she interferes in their married life and later yearns for her own husband to return.

In Mahaan, she plays the role of Janki, who is seperated from her husband who runs away as he had been framed for murder. She gives birth to twin sons, unfortunately she becomes separated from one of her sons when he goes missing. With her husband on the run and one son missing, Janki is forced to raise the other on her own. I can still remember the softness and love filled look she gives her husband in the song , “Jidhar dekhoon teri tasveer nazar aati hai”, this song I feel was written only for her. The amazing thing about her, is that she has played Amitabh’s mother’s role as well as his beloved’s role convincingly in several films.

In Lamhe , she plays the role of governess called Daai Jaa, who looks after Viren as her own son. She is still very graceful, in Lamhe she suddenly breaks into a graceful dance in one of the parody song, just can’t forget that scene.

She has recently done few films like Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Water (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006) where her performances were very well received.

Awards :

National Award for Best Actress for Reshma Aur Shera in 1971.

Filmfare Best Actress Award for Guide in 1965 ,Neel Kamal in 1968.

Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994

Nominations :

Filmfare Nomination as Best Actress--Ram Aur Shyam (1967), Khamoshi (1970)

From Horse’s Mouth :

Her Co-stars have nothing but praise for her.

Amitabh Bachchan - "She is my best Actress. She has a certain guileless look in her face, a feminine grace and an Indianness. Her beauty is something soft... and not easily defined. My greatest influences in acting are Waheeda Rehman and Dilip Kumar."

Rati Agnihotri -  "She's so beautiful. When I first met her on the sets of Yash Chopra's Mashaal, I told her I was going to just sit beside her and stare at her quietly."

Shabana Azmi - "Waheeda Rehman had made a difference for all Indian actresses. If females can aspire to strong female roles, it is because Waheeda Rehman has given them something to aspire to,"

She has acted in many more memorable films like Mashaal, Namkeen, CID (I didn't write about it coz I don't have much info on it), Namak Halal, Chandni, Kabhie Kabhie etc. Please let me how you liked it. If you wish you can leave brickbats and bouquets in form of your comments.

WAHEEDA RAHMAN........................the first thing that strikes you about her is her classic looks, charm and GRACE,i don't think anybody could ever bring the amount of grace and sophistication that WAHEEDA RAHMAN brought to her roles,dance,expressions..................i remember watching her for the first time on national tv when one of her songs was being aired..................it was ''JAANE KYA TUNE KAHI''from PYAASA...............AND I was like ''how could anyone look so beautiful and sensous even when covered from head to toe''...........and that was to her credit.WAHEEDA RAHMAN was this incredible mix of beauty and talent..............who could do any kind of role with conviction....................she was a brilliant dancer too................WAHEEDA RAHMAN has always remained one of my all time favourite actresses and I feel she took HINDI CINEMA to heights that fairly resonated with grace and dignity.TRULY THEY DON'T MAKE WOMAN LIKE HER ANYMORE.

WAHEEDA RAHMAN was born in 1936...............in HYDERABAD,she worked for the first time in a telugu film and that role got her a break in hindi cinema...............she was cast in NAVKETAN's C.I.D which was released way back in 1956,she played a wamp in the film....................and though people thought she looked too young, soft and good for a wamp................her career took off but it was HER association with GURU DUTT.............which brought her the desired success and oraise and made her reach different heights..............she got to work for the best banners, with the best actors.....................and ofcourse she got to do GUIDE in 1965,which was the most important film of her illustrious career.

HER BEAUTY...............She has been rated as one of the most beautiful woman to have graced the Indian film industry,Satyajit Ray once said that she was the most stunning woman he had seen...............and Amitabh Bachchan still thinks that nobody has quite the charm and beauty of Waheeda Rahman..............Guru Dutt was also known for his obsession for her..................for me too WAHEEDA RAHMAN IS THE EPITOME OF BEAUTY.CHOWDWIN KA CHAANDwas the perfect song to describe her..............she had the most perfect features with the right amount of cuteness and innocence............in one word she was ALLURING''................She looked the most beautiful in PYAASA,KALA BAZAR,GUIDE,KAGAZ KE PHOOL,SAHIB BIWI AUR GHULAM,EK PHOOL CHAAR KANTE..................

HER ACTING...................though she will always be remembered for her beauty,i think she was a great actress too. What I liked about her was her spontaniety and that she was a natural..........her expressions were also always very beautiful. She had a very nice soft voice and great diction................she was particularly good in dramatic scenes.I really loved her acting in films like PYAASA,SBAG,GHULAM,CID,KALA BAZAAR,KAGAZ KE PHOOL..............

HER DANCE...............she was a effortless dancer, very graceful,it was a treat to watch her dance....................my favourite song of her was ''PIYE TOSE NAINA LAGE RE'' and the sapare dance she did in GUIDE................it was splendid. Her moves were perfect.....................she was a trained dancer, thats why she made those dances look so simple.

BEST PICTURISED SONGS....................I simply loved her in the song ''JAANE KYA TUNE KAHI'',has to be one of the best picturised song of all times, just because of the way WAHEEDA RAHMAN enacted it.................her expressions were just brilliant and the way she moves in that song .......................she looked stunning. She proved in that song that you need not show skin or expose to bring about sensoulity on screen, what u need is right kind of expressions and correct body language.Another favourite song was WAQT NE KIYA and AAJ PHIR JENE KI TAANNA HAI...............beautiful.

SHE MADE THE BEST PAIR WITH,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,DEV ANANDThey came in innumerable films and they shared great on-screen chemistry.I loved their pair................specially in films like SOLVA SAAL,KALA BAZAAR,GUIDE,BAAT EK RAAT KI...................if you want too see their chemistry just watch the songs like ''TERE MERE SAPNE'',''RHIMJHIM KE TARANE'',SHIKHIYUN MAIN GHOLE JAYA''..............and a lot other.GREAT PAIR.

Waheeda Rehman was the embodiment of classic Muslim beauty with a truly transcendental appeal.

Born into a traditional Muslim family in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, she was trained in Bharatnatyam. Her first film was the Telegu film Jaisimha (1955) followed by Rojulu Marayi (1955), which was a huge success.

She was spotted by Guru Dutt in a song in the latter film and was brought to Bombay and cast as the vamp in his production C.I.D. (1956) directed by his protégé, Raj Khosla.

The song Kahin Pe Nigahein Kahin Pe Nishana as she tries to seduce the villain and allow the hero to escape reveal her extraordinary facial mobility and dancer's grace.

She broke through the following year with Guru Dutt's masterpiece Pyaasa in the role of the prostitute with the heart of gold.

The way she blended nuances of love, desire and despair as she follows Guru Dutt up the stairs to the terrace to the strains of Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo was amazing. But by now she had also got involved with Guru Dutt.

And it was ironic that his wife Geeta Dutt's voice was used on Waheeda Rehman the actress as she 'sang' sweet nothings to Guru Dutt.

Kaagaz ke Phool (1959) proved autobiographical. Guru Dutt's marital status and her success in films outside his tore them apart personally and professionally.

In fact Waheeda Rehman completed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) under some strain.

They broke away from each other after the film's indifferent reception at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963 even though it was much acclaimed in India and even won the President's Silver Medal.

Guru Dutt could never really get over her and committed suicide in 1964.

Meanwhile Waheeda worked with Satyajit Ray in Abhijaan (1962), which unfortunately for her was one of the great director's weakest films and consolidated her position as a top star in the Bollywood Film Industry with Bees Saal Baad (1962), a huge hit based on The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Strong performances in Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), a dacoit drama and Kohra (1964), a re-make of Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940) followed.

With Guide (1965), she reached the peak of her career.

Though the novelist R.K. Narayan on whose book it was based, disowned the film, he had no complaints with Waheeda's performance as Rosie.

It was a daring role to play, of a woman who leaves her stifling impotent husband and lives with her lover, a guide who helps her in her ambitions to become a famous dancer.

It is to Waheeda's credit that she was able to humanize Rosie to get the viewer's sympathy with her.

Whether breaking the metamorphic pot of social constraints or dancing precariously over a ledge in keeping with her dangerous new desires, Waheeda was outstanding in the film.

After Guide, Waheeda's career graph was strange to say the least.

Her commercial successes Ram Aur Shyam (1967) and Pathar ke Sanam (1967) hardly challenged her histrionic ability and the films that did so - Teesri Kasam (1966), Khamoshi (1969) and Reshma Aur Shera (1971) bombed at the box-office in spite of some of her best work as an actress.

In 1974 Waheeda married Kamaljeet, a businessman, who had tried his luck in films in the 1960s and failed, and moved to Bangalore.

She turned to character roles, often playing Amitabh Bachchan's mother (Bachchan has always cited her to be his favourite actress) but in the 1980s and 90s, she gradually cut down on film work, busying herself with marketing her brand of breakfast cereal while leading a contented life on her farmhouse in Bangalore.

Her last film was Lamhe (1991).

(Although a long delayed old film Ulfat ki Nayi Manzilein made it to the theatres in 1994) In Lamhe, director Yash Chopra paid her the ultimate tribute by getting her to dance to her Guide hit Aaj Phir Jeene ki Tamanna Hai!

Today after eleven years she is back playing mother to Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan and Abhishek Bachchan in Anupam Kher's Om Jai Jadgish.
