Follows the tips for safety while using the pressu
Sep 12, 2017 05:54 PM (via Mobile)

Hi everyone today I am going to share with you my personal experience on using the pressure cooker in my kitchen. At first I don't know which type of pressure cooker is perfect for my cooking . After looking at neighbours I had brought the pigeon pressure cooker so as to make my work little bit simple. But you should be very careful because over heating of the pressure cooker with little water content can make your vessel turn black as well gives a blast sound also. If you want to use this pressure cooker you need fist pour enough water depending on the quantity of the food to be cooked and the type of the items you are cooking . Suppose for cooking dal you can use little quantity, if you for get to put off the stive and make heating long time your pressure cooker will definitely blast. You can also cook mutton because normal cooking takes more time than cooking in pressure cooker. Also cooking food in pressure cooker gives and adds some nutrients value to your diet. Also you should check the rubber of the pressure cooker because either should be very stiff so that your container food will cooked very fast. You should also clean the whistle very neatly after cooking and out it for dry. Before cooking any time you can put your pressure cooker rubber in cold water or else in refrigerator for few minutes so that it will stiff and the food will be cooked very soon because there will be no gap .

It save your time & fuel so use it but carefully
Jan 22, 2016 03:02 PM

Pressure Cooker now become all time companion of all cooking with out it a moments can not be thought . It also reduce the time of cooking and also reduce the usage of fuel that make it efficient and effective for cooking.

Before choosing a pressure cooker keep it in your mind that it should be ISI enabled.

And after every cooking you should clean its vent pipe, Pressure Regulator, Over pressure Plug, Air vent air lock and sealing rings as these are the main parts of a pressure cooker which helps to maintain perfect pressure inside and gives you a healthy cook.

you should regularly check your pressure vulvae  and pressure regulator as they are fine or not as it can cause damage if these two things are not in perfect condition .

Try to use those pressure cooker whose cooking rack is made of copper material as it absorb the heat quickly than other materials and cook fast than other.

Never put any material over its lid and be careful while cooking in it as too much time can spoil your food by melting all food ingredients.

Use pressure cooker to save your fuel and time

!~~Chronicles of the colluding cooker ~~!
Mar 12, 2008 11:39 AM

It generally starts with the small spoon - "Hey pot, when was the last time you took a shower?" "How should I know. Probably the last time the pan and I were soaking together." says the pot. Pat comes the reply in that squeaky scheming voice "And when was that? my dear pan. When was the last time u had a soak with Mr. pot here?" The pan says "I believe it was 2 weeks ago when something was cooked in me". And since the cooker is the biggest, heaviest and loudest of the lot, they all go to him - for he is the undisputed king of the kitchen! "Help us O big one. help us so we get more attention!"

Ofcourse, the day they choose to ask the cooker is the day the cooker's daughter - the frying pan - was getting married to the pot and thus the cooker could not refuse them their favour. In a loud booming voice, the cooker replies "Since u all have come asking for a favour; on this, the day of my daughter's wedding, I shall grant it to u and make him pay attention to all of u in a way he'll never forget". Saying this, he gives each utensil a kiss on the forehead and grants them their favour. Thus it starts my friends. the mutiny of the kitchenwares!

And this is why the cooker must be destroyed at all costs! Let me give u some tips on how to do that!

1. parch it - by putting less or no water in it. This will ensure the darn thing will overheat and the eye of the dragon will melt(safety valve). The death this way is silent and if done correctly, can even result in the rubber gasket inserted in the cover to melt thus fusing the lid to the body! A permanent death!

Note: As it is the most common, u'll get away with it easily - especially if u are female and add the right amount of giggles in front of ur beloved. However, if its ur mom ur facing, it's in ur best interest to maintain a stern face unless she laughs first!

  1. make it look like an accident - Put the cooker on the stove - add everything as usual and go to the bathroom and forget about the cooker. Let the stove do the heating - while u cool off in the shower! In case of an investigation, u'll have an iron-clad alibi from the bath-tub!

Note: For best results, do it while listening to loud music as this'll also cover u if the detective asks "didn't u hear the cooker wail?" - The other utensils will mellow down after watching the cooker have a slow, painful and loud melt-down! **Pure Evil Genius stuff!

Warning: **If ur intent is to do just temporary damage, this method is not 4u as the food will stick to the cooker, burn and render it useless even if u can replace the safety valve with a spare one. It will also cause a lot of smoke depending on the length of the shower; but the smoke will only teach the utensils a lesson they need to learn!

  1. use its own words against it - When the food is ready, take the cooker off the stove and try to pry it open forcefully! If people ask u why - tell them u misunderstood the words pressure cooker and were merely following what u thought were directions!

Note: This method is generally useless on the cooker, but it can be effective in spraying the hot steam and steaming hot contents on the utensils - This art however needs to be mastered after careful practice and care should be taken to wear safety glasses to protect ur eyes as in ur eagerness to win, u'll end up spraying the contents on ur face. If u do not turn blind after ur first attempt, u can practice again and again till perfection is achieved!

Warning: If u are weak-handed, its best to steer clear of this method.

  1. smoke'em out - put the cooker on one stove - put oil in the frying pan - this one needs some prior planning -one day earlier, put some beer in the fridge and then start this method of torture. Turn both stoves on above-normal heat and retreat into the bedroom with the beer. After 20 minutes, call friends and ask them while pointing to the smoke alarm - "why is this thing on the ceiling wailing!" They'll ask u to check the kitchen - at that time act surprised as if u forgot u had something cooking. Run to the kitchen after 30 minutes - by this time the frying pan would be on fire - Eureka! You have now witnessed an idiom turn into reality! Now take the hot cooker and frying pan and place them onto the floor thus staining the floor with a burn mark! Tell the apartment office you did it to save the part of the microwave that had not already melted into the frying pan from the oil fire! This method will save the cooker, but will kill his daughter - thus breaking the cooker's spirit. And as u have now subdued the cooker, u'll have all the other utensils eating out of the palm of ur hand ensuring permanent victory!

Note: Do not have a fire extinguisher around in this method as it can help prevent considerable damage. If the smoke in the kitchen does not teach those pesky utensils a lesson, the burn mark stain on the flooring should be a pretty dark and ghastly reminder!

  1. khilaa khilaa ke maaroo - Stuff the darn thing with food! So much food that it does not have any room to breath and vent the steam! This will cause it to burst - The death this way is messy as everything in the vicinity will be sprayed with the contents, but it will have maximum impact. As it will spray the hot contents on the utensils lurking around, they will witness the demise of their kingpin first hand and it will drive home the point of who the ultimate boss is!

Note: If done with the right amount of turmeric powder(read excess) it will also leave permanent yellow stain marks on the kitchen walls, thus preventing the next mutiny! For best results, use dal with turmeric!

*All the best in ur battle against ur kitchen's best friend and ur arch enemy - the cooker!

PS: No. 5 is my most preferred method as I have successfully killed 3 cookers this way - the last one of which was killed just moments ago, thus sparking this review! However, to ensure my dominance, I still managed to finish cooking in the same cooker! While cleaning up the remains of the food from the oil can, I could hear her telling the can opener "its only been 3 days and he's rubbing me already and you have been here forever and yet he throws you into the dishwasher!" - Grrrrrrr, those pesky utensils will never learn, will they!

The remaining methods have been successfully tried and tested by various colleagues and friends to great effect and I can vouch for most of them personally. So friends and readers, do you still think the pesky utensils should be spared or should they be used more often?

:D

! Spike!

PS: All characters in this review are fictional - any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental and unintentional. In fact, this review in itself is so useless it should not be read by anyone;-)

The thing to be tamed !
Dec 14, 2007 06:22 PM

Tips like these should have been read, understood and followed(atleast to a certain extent) before a person could venture into the challenging task of  pleasing everyone with their culinary skills. Especially the ones who step into the kitchen, only to have an overview of what's cooked for lunch/dinner.

Although electric rice cooking and microwaving might have reduced the usage of the pressure cooker, it has to be accepted that its an indispensable utensil in the kitchen. Nothing can replace a pressure cooker for preparing some dishes in the simplest way. NOTHING.

The importance of maintaining a cooker, would be felt only when the whistle(which used to annoy u when ur reading, and distract someone attentively watching their favourite programme on TV) doesn't sound to blow with the usual vigour. Much worse, when the cooker stops whistling, and you stare at the queer thing, only to get startled by the enormous pressure released and the whole kitchen is full of steam. To put it in simple terms, when the alloy in the safety valve melts and the full pressure is let out.(That is nothing but the cooker's outburst of suppressed reaction to your poor maintenance:) Having experienced that incident recently, and keeping in line with the tradition of  MS i.e., giving advises(by the most ineligible persons), here are some from me.

Some Don'ts:-

1.Never overload your cooker/pressure pan. The quantity of rice/dhal+ water should be within the permissible level as mentioned in your catalogue.

2.Never fill upto the lid, as this would block the  steam to come out of the vent tube. Better still, to leave an inch space from the top of the pan.

3.Excess water is better than less water in a cooker. Less water could even reduce the shine in your cooker.(and you will be left to soak and scrub with lemon rinds).

*Pressure cooker or Frying Pan?

*Never use it as a frying pan, though some cookery sites misleading suggest such a practice. It would be tempting to use the pan/cooker as a tava, fry vegetables/onions and close the lid to allow it to cook. The durability of the cooker would drastically fall when used as a tava. Its easier to fry vegetables or peas for any variety rice or pulao in a frying pan and then transfer the contents to a vessel in the cooker for further cooking. Cooker's base shouldn't be used instead of a vessel as such.

*Veggies:

*There might be different ideas about this, but, I always feel a cooker shouldn't be used for boiling vegetables, which could be easily cooked in a frying pan. As there's a possibility of vegetables getting overcooked in a cooker. That said, we don't have a better option for cooking hard vegetables like Yam, or large Potatoes.

*Cleaning process:

*Pressure cooker, and its accessories require cleaning like any other utensil(ofcourse) . Though the cooker never misses this routine, the accessories do not figure in our perfunctory cleaning process. The gasket and the cooker weight/stopper requires cleaning too. An easy way of cleaning the weight would be to simply soak it in a small cup of hot water, which would remove all stains and would also ensure that you don't block the pores with your washing up liquid/powder. Dismantling the weight and cleaning it occasionally would guarantee lesser occurence of problems.

*Safety measures:

*We are lucky to have this lid with safety valve these days. I've heard of "ancient" cookers without this facility bursting and causing related hazards. Its always better to close the vessel with contents with a plate, to prevent(in case) the alloy from melting into your food, due to excess pressure. Replacing the gasket every year is a must. Gently twisting the gasket, would help it maintain the flexibility for a longer time. Never try to force open the lid, before the pressure is fully settled. I've seen instances where this was not followed and the full steam left boils in the hands of the person who tried opening the lid. After the ceremonious cleaning is done, the gasket should be removed from the lid when not in use.

*Simplify your cooking:

*While preparing idlis or some other dishes which wouldn't require the stopper, invert a cup over the cooker once you switch off the gas, as this would ensure that the steam is retained within and would reduce usage of gas by atleast a couple of minutes.

Maintaining the "pressure" of a pressure cooker is sure in our hands!

Big Boss of my kitchen
May 28, 2007 06:06 PM

Without much ado, this time, I choose to write on something that sits in my kitchen shelf - stout and sturdy, and is something that demands least attention from me. One of those things, I thought my mom was born with and never really looked at it twice as an important invention. Only later, when I grew up and had to make some rice in my Guide Camp, on a camp fire(on logs) in an open pan that I realized how uncool it must have been without this super invention. That's the time I took a second look at this big utensil(Yes, that time we used the 5 ltr one for cooking almost everything).

In the present generation, most of those coming from middle class homes have grown up seeing(and hearing and bearing with.) Pressure Cookers. Moms making variety of mundane stuff in them but a single malfunction from this heavy duty utensil can make everyone scream their lungs out.

Most of us already know the way Pressure Cooker works, so I won't explain that here. I intend to share some useful tips while cooking in a Pressure Cooker.

Handling and Care - This marvel of an invention though sturdy in it's appearance has a vulnerable side to it, like all sturdy things. It'sRubber Gasket. This is one thing that should be cleaned up frequently with mild soapy water and should be handled gently.

I'll share some personal exp here. I had seen my mom moving the gasket freely between her hands and using foam to clean it up, so, once to surprise her, I thought of doing the same in her absence. I tried applying pressure to clean it up nicely and stretched it little and BANG - it came in 2 pieces in my hands:) Rest is History.

The base of pressure cooker takes a good amount of beating, with house maids being most ruthless to Cooker, Kadai and Tava, in that order. If the base of your Pressure Cooker starts to bulge out, chances are, it won't work perfectly then onwards. Try getting it rectified from an authorized agency.

Soak me- Always soak the material before cooking. That helps save power(Gas or electricity) and Cooker has to do less work for a lesser period of time. Soaking time will depend upon hardness of what you intend to cook. So, Rajma or Channa would take a night to soak while rice/pulses would require only an hour before cooking is intended to start.

You can whistle a 100 miles. This one is really important and most ignored fact till date. Once the full pressure has been made and you've heard the first full blown whistle, simmer the gas and give the time as mentioned in the booklet. Lots of folks I know, count the number of whistles to know if it's cooked. That's NOT the way it is supposed to work. Once full steam is made, cooker do it's work inside, no matter how many whistles. Whistles are just a way to let the excess steam off it's lungs.

So, let the heat simmer, and cooker cook it for you, without having to scream many times.

Here's a quick referenceoff the top of my head

  • Minutes to keep on simmer after the first whistle (If you've pre soaked, else add 2-4 mins more  accordingly)

Rice - 1 min.

Pulses - 5 mins

Channa - 13-15 mins

Rajmah - 13-15 mins

Steaming Mangoes/Raw Tomatoes - 3 mins

Boiling Potatoes(Soaking not needed:)  - 4 mins for medium sized ones.

Art of separating out- Bigger Cookers(5 ltrs onwards) can accommodate separators in them. That's a very useful way of preparing 2 things in one go. Remember to keep sensitive item in top separator. So, you could be steaming up mangoes for Aam Panna in the lower separator while cooking rice in the upper one.

The catch here is that, both items should have identical cooking time. So, you can steam up pulses and cook rice together but you can't club rajmah and rice. Rice obviously requires 1/15th of time of rajma. So, use the art of separating out sensibly and you'll save up considerably on time and power.

Double entendre - Some really gifted ladies I know of, can make cakes and puddings in Cooker. I don't know the exact recipes for them, but these days some of the cook and serve kind of cake mixes (like the ones from Pillsbury) can be made in Pressure Cooker and it comes out well. I never tried it myself, but my sister has the credit for trying it and licking her fingers over phone while narrating it to us.

Hope you've found something useful. Add more useful tips in the comments section.

Pressure (Control) Cooker
Jan 18, 2007 04:07 PM

Pressure cooker the indispensable part of our present life.

The one best ideal vessel for any type of cooking.  In my experience, I feel the Aluminium cookers are best when compared to Stainless Steel.

I'm finishing nearly 80% of the cooking work only with pressure cooker / Pressure pan.  You can make the optimum use when you could plan your dish for the day and arrange the ingredients accordingly.

For example to prepare Rice and dhall, we can pour water in the cooker and heat it till we soak and clean the Rice and dhall and  we can use the readily available hot water in the cooker to pour for the rice and dhall which will economise the fuel usage.  Similarly we can allow only one vessel when we cook the soft vegetables as against 3 or 4 for Rice/dhall.

Similarly, we can prepare the dough for chappathis/parothas with the use of pans so that the dough will be non-sticky and we can use the same pan for preparing the side dishes also.  While cooking the vegetables as the cooker/pan is closed the essence in the vegetable is not getting evaporated and it is being preserved.  Cooker is useful for preparing almost all tiffin items like Idly, Upma, Pongal, Chappathi, Sevai, pulav, veg. rice etc.

It is also useful  in the preparation of sweets like Milk Gova, Halwa etc.  As the bottom is thick we can use the cooker itself for sweets/cakes preparation.  Bottom thickness and the broad opened mouth are the great big advantages of pressure cookers/pans.  Even it will not allow overflow when we use it for open cooking(without putting lid).

Now, will you say it as a pressure cooker,

absolutely no

it is our pressure control cooker.

Because it makes cooking easy, simple, tasteful and especially without any wastage of essentials.

Put one great  "O." to pressure(control) cooker.

The foldins family
May 10, 2006 06:30 AM

I recently got hold of a hawkins pressure cooker 2L from the Indian store.. the manual was all in hindi.Neverthless it bought me an immense pride to buy a hawkins here. I remember my mother using an imported cooker before prestige and hawkins hit the market.. and then in my life time I end up buying a hawkins in the US. yes its been a long way ...

I  never owned a hawkins. so I searched online to check if there were any manuals . the first hit in google bought me here. will check out the recipes.. yes there are growing concerns about microwave too.. And nothing can beat freshly cut vegetables. There is bound to be a huuge demand for pressure cooked recipes. more on the health lines. Any one who has a culinary affinity combined with a flair for writing or at least a spouse who has a flair for writing at least after reading this should go ahead and write a book on a healthy way to pressure cooked living.. well here we go !!

Pressure cooked
Dec 28, 2005 01:38 AM

Don't worry people are reading your review, and in fact reading your profile, I was shocked by the down to earth way in which you have portrayed yourself. I love my lids was perhaps the most touchig. Toomuch of communication is marketing these days...rather tiring. Nice reading.

Now, since I'm from India, what my understanding of a pressure cooker is differs slightly from yours...While yours is electrically operated and more sophisticated (multiple prssure settings etc.), we use a contraption that can be put on the gas burner directly. Fundamental concept of pressure cooking remains the same though...and we call your device a ''Rice cooker'', and it was an eye-opener to know that it can be put to diverse uses beyond cooking rice. Only thing is that Gas(LPG) is much cheaper (and abundant - there are too many power cuts, especially in our smaller towns) in our country than electricity.

Thanks anyway.

My BIG BANG THEORY
Nov 30, 2005 12:08 AM

The pressure cooker has really changed the lifestyle of modern day man.Really gone are the days when ppl had to sit and cook their food in pots over a bonfire or use chulhas.Imagine the chaos if this amazing appliance hadnt been invented.Imagine the chefs in 5-star hotels standing on the road with their chulhas. No doubt about it.Man has progressed over the years.

I believe it was Stephen Hawkins' ancestor Julian Hawkins who had invented the pressure cooker. The basic principle has also been used in making the steam engine(That too is a revolutionary invention).

Pressure cooker can be used as a combat weapon. It can be really fatal if used effectively.Steps to use it as a bomb:-

1)Fill the cooker with water

2)close the mouth of the cooker properly.Make sure it is tightly closed.

3)Cover the siti with the small cylindrical thing and superglue it

4)Heat the cooker

sometime or the other an explosion is bound to takeplace.

George Bush should use these weapons of mass destruction during his next so-called-war against terrorism. He shall definitely acheive better results.(Imagine heated pressure cookers being dropped from F-16s)

In case u wish to paint ur room with rice then also add rice along with water(Also add sufficent amount of water colours of your choice) and instead of supergluing the siti use normal cellotape. Also the rubber wheel type thing should contain holes. Then keep it for heating.Return after about an hour. You shall be amazed to find your room so magnificently coloured.Try it.The Berger Paints ppl ar actually experimenting with this fast and cost effective way of painting houses. They have had positive results so far.

Warning:Dont be in the same room as the pressure cooker when it is heating until u hear the explosion or else u might also get painted.

Amazing Fact:Metallica used the sounds from the Pressure cooker(the siti and the Big Bang) in various songs in their album ''St. Anger''

Dont the various potential possibilities of this household appliance astound u????

Now just like ''Phone sirf baat karne ke liye nahi hota'',Pressure cooker bhi khali chawal pakaane ke liye nahi hota.Taking inspiration from Nokia Hawkins is releasing a cooker with gaming facilities very soon.Initially they shall start with snake and slowly move their way up to bowling.Maybe with a few more advancements they too will integrate a camera with the cooker so that u can see how u look while u cook and share it with ur friends.

Pressure cooker is a mini volcano in your house, it will get hyper and heated and within moments will whistle for exhaustion and also as a sign of cooked food inside. Beware Pressure cooker can also become a mini Atom Bomb and blast your food as a paint on the walls of your kitchen.

Worst Case Scenarios if the things go wrong.....

1) The biryani or pullaav will blow off and occupy all the spaces in the kitchen. Your wall will be painted in White Rice instead of Asian Paints.

2) The sound will make everyone sit up and take notice. The sleeping baby will start crying, Your Chowkidaar or watchman will think of some burglary. Neighbours will jump on you for Kya Hua Kya Hua.

3) Police will be called in suspicion of Terrorist attack. You will be probed by the CBI and then FBI and then the War Against terror will be raged against you.

4) CIA will label you terrorist and you will under serious punishment.

So See one bad day with the Pressure cooker and all the things go for a Toss. Your dreams are shattered. Life turns into hell and nothing remains. So friends and people please please and double triple more pleases Do Take care of your Pressure Cooker (This is in sync with Amitabh Bachchan, the way he ends his shows on KBC) :D

So lets see what kamaal can you do with your pressure cooker.

First the Blah Blah...

1) Optimum water level

2) Whistle ubber ring closing the lid check

3) Stainless steel compulsary

4) It boils doesnt fries.

5) Change the cooker in atleast 3 years

5) Check for autolids nowadays available by Hawkins and Prestige.

Now lets explain....

Water has to be optimum or else you dont have adequate steam to boil the food down. Imagine you putting damn less water and put a nice Toor Daal in the cooker...what happens you get Big Bolders of Toor and it ends up being Channa Masala and not a daal. Guys there is a difference in chole and daal ok. So keep water up. Dont overflow the water else Daal will become a Soup. In Old cooker and simple cookers rubber ring has to be of good quality it doesnt allow the steam to go out except from the whistle. This helps better cooking. Cooker is strictly for boiling things dont cook omlette or fry fish in it...else well try it and then see what happens. Nowadays lot of technological advanced and teflon coated cookers are available in the market especially from Hawkins and Prestige.

Finally...

Cooker's sitti has to be good like a Chuk Chuk gaadi train. If its strong and sounding that way then fine well n good else if its lame and weak...Nope your cooker needs a check. Remember if used effectively it will serve you well.

Wash the cooker with Lime...it helps quick boiling and quick cooking. Also cover the containers of the food to keep it in cooker or else your Daal and Chawal will be mixed before hand.

So keep some tips handy and enjoy the Pressure of Pressure Cooker.

Chalo Tata. :D

Title:

Review: For the last fifiteen years since my marriage I ahve been using thhe pressure cooker as the most efffective means of cooking which is time efficient energy efficient and master at prserving the taste and texture. All this I learnt from my father who uused to cook our meals and plan our meals all through our growing up years and taught us several tips ar managing home and profession while keeping promises at both. I appreciate his scientific way of using this amazing equipment today more than ever before because till now I find that people do not use it to the best of its capasity. That is precicely why I though that I must share this will all of you Pressure Cooker should be used as a pressure cooker The underlining importance is in cooking with presssure which gets accumulayed in the vessal by the steam that is generated. Thus the trick is in turning the gas to its minimum just before the pressure begins to gush out: so what is important is timing. LOGIC you save on the time and the fuel that it took to create the steam that would gush out so mercilessly and thus prolong thhe time for the food to be cooked. Security. the eccess steam that is beyond the optimal level will automatically going out if at all it gets collected. For each thing that you cook you will have to customise the time for which you would need to keep the gas at the low flame and for how long before you turn it off. For example if you are making rice you need to turn off the burner the minute the steam in your pressure cooker is about to escape. then . let the rice cook in the steam. DO NOT FORCE OUT THE STEAM FROM THE WEIGHT you will have perfectly cooked rice as the steam cools of Same principle works for those very delicate quick to cook pulses when it is time fr boiling potatos etc DO NOT PUT MORE WATER THAN YOU NEED KEEP the gas on the low flame after the full pressure is built up in the cooker and leave it like that for ten minutes then turn off the burner. The lid of the cooker should be opened ONLY WHEN THE STEAM HAS COOLED OFF ON ITS OWN. Our gas cylinders goes on for almost three months OKAY two months for sure in a family of three - two adults and a child, with a cook and one maid who eats with us. The important thing is the joy of cooking efffortlessly and conserving fuel and eating healthy. This is specially with the new age cookers that are available with necessary cirtifications. I have benifitted and I am sure thaT you would too. Thanks Disha This catually is another golden rule
