Long time back, when Adnan Sami had not yet earned the name, he has today, I picked up a cassette from the local Mumbai market which featured a Piano recital mostly in the traditional Indian Classical music, and was impressed by the display this gentleman from Pakistan and our own Zakir Hussain on the Tabla delivered. To state ''impressed'' will be a rather understatement, for the fact is I was actually ''overwhelmed'' by the sheer quality of the whole thing.
The most amusing part of the recording was a Chinese (sic) piece called TUNING. Adnan Sami displayed his talent in both the Eastern as well as the Western Classical varities of music. His piece on Raag Durga will be etched in our memories for ever.
It is really unfortunate that this great musician is lost in songs like ''Lift Kara De'' and others in the same genre and we never heard another such Classical performance from him.
I sincerely wish that Adnan Sami revisits his own music and recreats the music he once created some 8-10 years ago. I, for one, will continue to look for any other live or studio Piano recording of Adnan Sami.
I would fail in my duty, if I did not mention the beautiful quality of recording this cassette offered at a time, when Audio CDs were struggling to create a niche for themselves. The tonal quality of Tabla, played by Zakir Hussain is also absolutely ecstatic and matched with that of the Piano.
I pay my belated compliments to the two great artistes of this sub-continent for creating divine music for the hungry souls.
