On his uncle's death Sir henry Baskerville returns from abroad and opens up the ancestral hall on the desolate moors of devonshire.

Best Mystery thriller by Sir Arthur!
Feb 04, 2018 02:45 PM 1432 Views

I read the Suspense thriller novel - The Hound Of The Baskervilles based on the supreme detective Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle during my middle school days as it was among the few suspense books available at my school library. Since then, I am a huge fan of Sir Arthur and his works and also of Sherlock Holmes.

As I was a middle school boy those days, I found the literature and vocabulary of the book really tough to understand and interpret. Also because of lack of understanding due to the use of high end language in the book, I lost interest in the initial pages of the novel but as a kept reading further, my interest grew to a level when I could not sleep thinking of what will happen next in the story! The plot of the novel is really spine chilling.

The story of the novel is based on Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who try to find the suspense of the owner of a mysterious cane, that it left in their office by an unknown visitor. As Mr. Holmes starts his investigation, he finds some secrets about the baffling curse of the Baskervilles.

The novel is full of mystery, surprises and spine chilling thrill with great turns in the story. I found the novel a bit tough to read during my school days but now, I read many books of Sir Arthur and find them really really good.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a masterpiece and is a must read book for suspense and mystery readers!

Most Thrilling novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!!

I've read this book more than once. It's a perfect mixture of suspense and mystery detection. The hound of Baskerville is the third novel of the four Sherlock Holmes short novels. It's inspired by mythological hell-hounds, said to roam the moors of the western England. Sir Henry Baskerville, a young man who arrived from North America to inherit the estate of his uncle who died suddenly seeks the protection of Sherlock Holmes. Sir Charles died in terror from an unknown enemy meanwhile Mr. Henry himself is receiving mysterious threats related to Baskerville family curse. The novel also involve a maiden, an ancestor and a hound. Sherlock Holmes being busy in other works send Mr. Watson to keep watch over Sir Henry and tell him to keep reporting him whatever he's encountering. The story's casting is outstanding which consists of Dr Mortimer ( country practitioner) , the Barrymores who has been the servants to the Baskerville for ages, Stapleton and his sister with whom Mr Henry fell in love with. Meanwhile a murderer has escaped from the nearby prison and is loose on the moor and no one can forget the spine chilling howls. Surprise deductions and terrifying moments happens infront of Holmes brings things to a conclusion.According to me it's one of the best book having such an interesting characters. The readers will keep getting surprised about what's going to happen next and trust me your deduction will be proven wrong by the book because the ultimate conclusion or the climax of the novel is beyond the reader's imagination.

AC Doyle has written the  entire sherlock holmes series and I have read them all .According to me its best of them all and obviously the most interesting of them all is'The Hound Of Baskervilles' .

One day Dr.Mortimer visits Sherlock Holmes' and presents before him yhe hardest mystery of Holmes' entire carrier. He asks Holmes to solve the murder mystery of Sir Charles Baskerville and discusses with him the curse of Baskerville .Holmes was not much impressed by the story and called it a fairy tale but was keenly interested to discover the truth behind unusual happenings at the villa. The situation as rathr most tensed because Sir Henry Baskervile being the last heir had decided to reside at Baskervilles.Holmes and Watson agree yo go with him and find out the truth. Then there are Barrymores,Stapletons,Laura Lyons and many other people who add lot of confusion to the scene keeping the interestalive till the end .You become so involved in the story that in a chapter it seems that Holmes is dead you feel really sad but yhen ultimately the truth comes out in the most unexpected way and the method Holmes uses to get the culprits to their right place is really a treat for the readers.I dont want to spoil your interest bu disclosing the end.

Sir AC Doyle is a wonderful writer and his creayions are a great treat for the readers .He is the best writer in his genre.I hope I was useful to the readers.Thanks.

Holmes and Watson are faced with their most terrif
Dec 31, 2016 08:44 PM 1505 Views

The legend has it that the Baskervilles of Devonshire are cursed to be murdered by a demonic hound. So when Sir Charles Baskerville dies suddenly and the footprints of a hound are discovered around his body, Dr. Mortimer approaches Sherlock Holmes to investigate the real cause of the death. The next Baskerville to die is Sir Henry Baskerville who, being the only legitimate heir, inherits the Baskerville Hall(the ancestral residence of Baskervilles in Devonshire moor). Henry disposes all the superstitions and moves to the Baskerville Hall without caring much about his life. Now, it’s all up to Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson, to find out the truth behind the legend and save Henry’s life.

Dr. James Mortimer asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the death of his friend, Sir Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles died at his Devonshire estate, Baskerville Hall, and Mortimer now fears for Sir Charles's nephew and sole heir, Sir Henry Baskerville. The death was attributed to a heart attack, but Mortimer is suspicious, because Sir Charles died with an expression of horror on his face, and Mortimer noticed "the footprints of a gigantic hound" nearby. The Baskerville family has supposedly been under a curse since the era of the English Civil War, when Hugo Baskerville offered his soul to the devil for help in abducting a woman and was reportedly killed by a giant spectral hound. Sir Charles believed in the curse and was apparently running away from something when he died.

Intrigued, Holmes meets with Sir Henry, newly arrived from Canada. Sir Henry has received an anonymous note, cut and pasted from newsprint, warning him away from the moors, and one of his new boots is inexplicably missing from his London hotel room. The Baskerville family is discussed: Sir Charles was the eldest of three brothers; the youngest, black sheep Rodger, is believed to have died childless in South America, while Sir Henry is the only child of the middle brother. Sir Henry plans to go to Baskerville Hall, despite the ominous warning message. Holmes and Dr. Watson follow him from Holmes's Baker Street apartment back to his hotel and notice a bearded man following him in a cab; they pursue the man, but he escapes. Mortimer tells them that Mr. Barrymore, the servant at Baskerville Hall, has a beard. Sir Henry's boot reappears, but an older one vanishes.

Sherlock Holmes examining Dr. Mortimer's walking stick

Holmes dispatches Watson to accompany Sir Henry to Baskerville Hall. They learn that an escaped murderer named Selden is believed to be in the area.

Barrymore and his wife wish to leave the estate soon. Watson hears a woman crying in the night; it is obvious to him that it was Mrs. Barrymore, but her husband denies it. Watson has no proof that Barrymore was in Devon on the day of the chase in London. He meets a brother and sister who live nearby: Mr. Stapleton, a naturalist, and the beautiful Mrs Stapleton. When an animalistic sound is heard, Stapleton is quick to dismiss it as unrelated to the legendary hound. When her brother is out of earshot, Mrs Stapleton mistakes Watson for Sir Henry and warns him to leave. Sir Henry and she later meet and quickly fall in love, arousing Stapleton's anger; he later apologizes and invites Sir Henry to dine with him a few days later.

I read The Hound Of The Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle years ago when it was a part of my daughter's school curriculum! She insisted me to read it and I'm glad I did!

It's a really thrilling piece of writing! Sherlock Holmes has been a legend among fictional lovers and It's the first time I got the chance to experience it. The plot is interesting and haunting. The writing gives you a feeling as if you're right there in the story. I won't spoil it for the people who haven't read it but I'd suggest you do read it whenever you get the chance! It's got a plot twist in the end where the main suspect is revealed that leaves you astonished.

Hound Of The Baskervilles

I am not fond of reading novels or books but I read the fantasies and thriller one like Game of thrones and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle;s work. Main reason I read this book is because I was use to read all Sherlock Holmes novels and I like his deductions and secondly it was a subject in my class in+2.

The book is of a case solved by the famous character if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle-Sherlock Holmes. The plot given in text is very awesome, the length of the book is not much it can be read in 2-3 sitting. The style of text written in book is very impressive but you have to read by having a read concentration. although it covers almost everything its having direct language mostly. If I compare this book to other books like Case of Russian board or study in scarlet  then Hound of Baskervilles  is okay.

If I conclude, its a very interesting one and worth the money and time you will give it.

Read it..get it..asap.!

The hound of baskerville is mysterious novel of sherlock.i don't think after this name anything else is required.

Sherlock is satisfactory in himself.

But still.hound of baskerville is a novel in which a man who owns a hounds pose a threat of it in the city and sherlock and watson grab him with there presence of extraordinary minds.

Both of them work awesome and sherlock novels are lovely to read.

The story starts when one of his friends reaches him with the case that has something ttdo with there past.

Sherlock follows all the details and catch the man behind the scene mr.stapelton.

Actually, it's a revenge base of mr.Stapleton using hound.

But the description and way of writting makes it awesome.

Thiz book iz juz amazing

Sherlock here!! Surprisingly awesome!
Jul 05, 2015 03:15 PM 3957 Views

No wonder - Sherlock Holmes can solve any kind of mystery. Even here, Sherlock can use his excellent brain and solve. But the problem here is that his client should be alive.

Baskervilles are believed to be killed by Hounds. Charles Baskerville was killed by hound. So it appears like a family curse. Now comes the young Henry Baskerville who inherited the property of Baskerville. But even he was afraid of the "so called- curse". He goes to Sherlock Holmes to guide him and help him survive this curse.

Sherlock doesn't believe in curses and other superstitions. He knew that someone was behind this all the time. This is the plot of this novel.

This is the best novel I've ever read. Most exciting and unexpected twists here and there! Arthur Conan Doyle can be appreciated for coming up with such a plot!

If you don't like Sherlock, read this - you will start liking him. If you already like Sherlock Holmes, this novel will make you is die hard fan!

The hound of baskervilles by arthur conan doyle is one of the crime novel I have ever read in my school times.this book was written by arthur doyle featuring the detective of sherlock homes. I am a bit curious about reading crime novels, that's why someone suggested me to read this book. Author writing style is also in a detective way. It is divided into parts to search out the clue to solve the mystery.

There is one book which I have read written by this author only is the adventure of sherlock homes. Commendable book. If you are interested in reading crime novels then go for these books.

The best mystery of Conan Doyle!!
May 31, 2015 05:08 AM 4157 Views

The best classic mystery of all times by Conan Doyle. The story revolves around an ancient Curse of the Hound of the Baskervilles, a great concept for setting up a stage for mystery, danger and murder. Sir Henry Baskerville takes possession of the estate of his uncle, who dies mysteriously, believed by all to be killed by the curse of the hound. He seeks the protection of Sherlock Holmes as he too starts receiving threats. This is Conan Doyle at his best.

The plot moves along at a good pace, beautifully woven and the quality of writing is excellent. In most of Conan Doyle's book, you get to see Watson & Sherlock Holmes work together, however in this book Watson is sent by Holmes to the crime scene earlier. You will get to read more of Watson in this book, so one may feel a bit robbed about not getting more of Sherlock Holmes. Still, the author manages to make up by making Watson an entertaining central figure.

This book has all it takes to be a perfect mystery novel, from suspects to victims to villain, all excellent portrayed. It is a solid entertainment for readers who love mystery novels, even those who don't like will love it:)

!! MOST TERRIFYING ADVENTURE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES !!
Oct 03, 2012 06:48 PM 22087 Views

When I read ‘His Last Bow’ few months back, impression was good enough to make me revisit Sherlock Holmes. Since there was already so many suggestions for ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ (THOTB), above all by Deepak (@deepak27), the recommendations of whom I always hold high, more so for mystery thriller kind of reads, I picked up THOTB for my next Sherlock Holmes read.

.

THOTB is considered to be the best book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (SACD) in the Sherlock Holmes series. What more, few pages in the book and you find Sherlock Holmes himself calling it the most intriguing and difficult case that he had ever come across and keeps his words intact till the end. For me, all these recommendations and the self proclamation of Sherlock Holmes have raised the expectations to quite a high level. But, did it deliver? Were all these notions that lead me to read THOTB proved out to be true? To answer that lets first get into the plot part. Rest assured, my coverage is nothing but a meager hint of the plot, just to whet the appetite.

.

ABOUT THE PLOT: Dr Mortimer presents Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson with the strangest and most intriguing case that they have ever come across. Dead body of Sir Charles Baskerville was found in the garden outside his house, Baskerville Hall. Various investigations, carried out by police, ascribe Heart Attack to be the cause of death. Dr Mortimer knows that Charles had a weak Heart but he, however doubts it to be the cause of his death, as he has another theory that could explain the death with a completely different approach.

.

There’s a legend in Devon that many years ago Hugo Baskerville made a pact with devil, offering his soul, for accomplishing one wicked task. A huge monstrous Hound then appeared to help him in the deed but later killed Hugo as well. Legend says that since that horrific day the Hell Hound is slaying all the members of Baskerville Family, whoever arrives at Devon.

.

Now that Sir Charles Baskerville is dead his nephew, Henry Baskerville is the heir and he is coming to Dartmoor to claim his inheritance. Dr. Mortimer, being a good friend of Charles, doesn’t want to put Henry’s life in danger but at the same time he knows how important Baskerville’s presence is, in the village for progress. So, he approaches Sherlock Holmes for the advice on whether it will be safe for Henry to live in Dartmoor. On arrival of Sir Henry in London some curious and very singular incidents take place that make Holmes even more interested in the case, as you find someone very elegantly outsmart the great detective.

.

Holmes believes it not to be a case of supernatural nature and feels it can be solved within the boundaries of scientific limitations. He knows that his antagonist this time is not some ordinary man. So he sends Henry and Dr Mortimer to Devon accompanied by Dr Watson, who is supposed to protect Henry and concurrently gather information in relation with the case.

.

Whether it’s a case of paranormal nature with Hound from the Legend slaying his preys from the Baskerville family or is it just a case of someone making use of the legend to accomplish some personal motives? There is a Hellhound in the Village; many villagers have witnessed it furious appearance and petrifying howls across the moor. What reasons can explain the presence of this beast. Read ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ to know.

.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Before THOTB, The only book of Sherlock Holmes that I have read was ‘His Last Bow’ which is a compilation of short stories. They were quite fast paced covering each of the case within 30-40 pages. But in THOTB, you have just one case covered in the length of 175 pages. So SACD had ample time to define his characters. He has taken the liberty to be more descriptive - when required - and it has added lot value to the content. The horror that Dr. Watson and Henry Baskervilles face in Dartmoor is so well described that it proves to be quite a spine chilling experience for the reader as well. SACD has meticulously managed to keep the interest intact with minimum possible characters. All the time, reader finds himself indulged in one or more puzzling circumstances.

.

On guessing, there are few things that one can manage to guess before the unveiling affair towards the end, but the best part is: one may succeed in guessing the ‘WHO DONE IT?’ part but no one will ever be able to guess the ‘HOW IT WAS DONE? and WHY IT WAS DONE?’, and that’s where the beauty of THOTB lies and that’s where it scores.

.

Alongwith being an excellent mystery thriller, THOTB could well be considered under horror fiction category (infact it is considered). I read it in later part of August with rain falling heavily and winds blowing around making frightening sounds, a perfect ambiance to read a horror mystery like THOTB. Each time Dr Watson or Henry B walk towards the moor, I felt excited and filled with same horror as the they did and when Sherlock Holmes arrives on the scene reader gets a breathe of relaxation, just like Dr Watson, as you have the company of the master now to face it all, but restlessness and uncertainty still remains. Dr Watson unexpected rendezvous with Sherlock Holmes and their later adventures in the Moor forms most thrilling part of the tale alongwith the climax wherein they let Sir Henry to walk alone on the Moor in the dead of night, to work as a decoy. Can’t explain the horror I felt when the trio (Holmes, Watson and Lasteride) first observe the Hound for what it really is, with fire blazing from its mouth and its whole body shining, all in accordance with the Legend. Just like Watson, I felt Henry to be to be dead in a minute or two. I will stop myself here, as anymore words will spoil the mystery.

.

FINAL WORDS: THOTB is a perfect blend of Mystery Thriller Horror, for the readers who love any of this genres, this book forms an excellent read. Those who have read THOTB know what I am talking about and others need to read the book to know what I am talking about.

.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
