San Francisco, CA, USA (SFO) - Intl. Reviews

Amsterdam Netherlands
Nothing exciting

Before reading, you have to know that I spent limited time in this airport because everything is so quick!!!Don't you love that??SFO is a gateway to many American cities. However, many Airlines do not have any service to this Airport. ( THAI aiways , Malaysia Airlines, Air India, Emirates Airlines who don't fly here should think about adding SFO in their route seriously)As far as I know, there's huge demand during spring break in America that brings 10, 000 students from Thailand ( Actually American Embassy gives the quota of 20, 000 students per season) to get a part-time job here.

And it is quite easy to get other cities from this airport. Before arrival, I have sent 2 e-mails to the officer of the airport inquiring about the Bus information and what kind of food I can bring from home, and they reply very quickly. I don't think Bangkok airport has this kind of service. On my way to this Airport. I met 2 Thai persons who are on the way to another cities. One was going to Denver, and the other one was going to philadelphia. It is not tiring at all when we got off the plane to the immigration. The sign is clearly shown which counter you have to pass. If you can't speak English, somebody will assist you for sure. The immigration officer was nice, just a few questions were asked.

In sum, it takes less time for immigration. The luggage came out very quick, very much better than in Bangkok. The customs didn't even open my luggage. But Somehow, I feel that It is not bigger than Bangkok or Taipei Airport.I got to get to G-building for Bart station. And it takes around 1 hour to get to downtown. However, I am afraid I should say that nothing's exciting. It's convenient and somehow safe. There are 3 airports that is near San Francisco. In North Bay, I guess Sacramento provide quite a lot domestic flights including Hawaii. In East Bay, You can go to Oaklandairport which is 85% domestic airport plus some flight to Mexico. In Southern part of San Francisco, you can also take the flight in San Jose airport......How to get to this city is the take Caltrain....

I live have flown out of SFO countless times and aside from the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, I must say that SFO is by far my favorite airport.

The international terminal has a modern airy feel to it and the shops are alot of fun to visit. The Sees Candy shop is a must visit in the terminal when we are in the airport along with the perfume shop right past the security checkpoint. Taking off on the long haul flights are fun too because you take off over the bay and it gives a really pretty view of San Francisco.

The domestic terminal is not as nice as the international but they have a Jamba Juice(my favorite) and a Guava Java which are both delicious drink shops. I believe they have a Peets Coffee which has really good coffee.

Coming into SFO, I alway feel like we are going to land in the bay (we never have) but the immigration lines have never been a problem for me and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport) has been really nice because it is so accessible and can take you as far out as East Contra Costa County.

It is definately a fun airport to fly in and out of and I will continue to enjoy my flights in and out of SFO.

I have arrived and depart from the San Francisco International Airport, about eight times.

The Terminals are built around a round underground parking lot. There are three terminals, that stem from the departure area.

On The Departure Level

One Terminal is for domestic flights, another for trans-border flights, (to Canada and Mexico).

On The Arrivals Level, (the first floor)

There is one area for people who don't have to go through customs and another area for people who do. I have never been to the customs area, because Canadians go through United States customs at our departure point.

The turn tables are clearly marked, and show the flights that the bags will come down on.

Out side there are cabs, limos, (limousine only cost a dollar more than a taxi), buses and transfer buses.

The Airlines who fly into SFO

Aeroflot, Air Canada, Air China, Air France, AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines (Domestic, and trans-border to Mexico and Canada), America West Airlines, American Airlines, ANA, (All Nippon Airways), Asiana, ATA Airlines, (Domestic and for Mexico), British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, EVA Airways, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Horizon Air, Japan Airlines, KLM, ( Royal Dutch Airlines), Korean Airlines, LACSA, Lufthansa, Mesa Airlines, Mexicana, Midwest Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, TACA, TED, United Airlines, US Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

After You Check in you might want something to eat or drink. There are a lot of choices:

There must be almost 50 places to eat and drink. They range from snack foods, to coffee houses, bars, cafes and fine dinning.

The Places I've Tried

North Beach Deli makes deli sandwiches so big I can't even eat half of one, so my husband and I share.

Jamba Juice, makes freshly squeezed juice, while you wait for it. I like the pomegranate juice and the mango juice the best. If you are connecting on to another flight, this is the place to stop for a quick pick me up.

The ice cream is wonderful at the Croissant and Ice Cream Shop. The flavours are real not artificial, so if you try a cone, I'll tell you the lemon flavour is sour.

Just Desserts, makes desserts to die for. I love their double, double, chocolate mousse cake.

Crab Pot Brew Pub, makes a great crab stew.

At the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, I tasted Steamer Beer, for the first time.

I go to Noah's Bagel's and Boudin Bakery before I go home. I like dark rye bagels so I buy a bakers dozen, (13), of them to take home. No one makes sour dough bread, like the bakeries in San Francisco. At the Boudin Bakery I buy a loaf,(because sour dough bread is only good on the day it's baked). They put the bread into a woven tote bag, (it smelt like hemp to me), and I put in the bagels, so it's easier to take them home.

Shopping

The first place we stop, (before our return flight), is the Duty Free Shop. My husband buys a bottle of Bourbon, (we can't get that in Canada), and some cigars and pipe tobacco. I buy Canadian Rothmans cigarettes, (for $20.00, per carton, cheaper than I can buy in Canada.

At the News and Gift Shop I buy a lot of pocketbooks, because they are 3/4 of the price they are sold for in Canada.

See's Candies make the best chocolates so I buy a few boxes.

I believe that there are at least 20 places to shop.

You might be wondering how I bring all the things home. When I return from any trip, I only put my prescription medicine into my carry on bag. That leaves room for the items I know I'm going to buy at the Airport.

Thanks for reading my review.

After stage one of my honeymoon, the short trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco proved to be uneventful. That was until landing.

San Francisco Airport (SFO) is built right at the edge of the bay. In fact, It could be safe to say, in the bay.

As we decended, I looked out of the window and saw the ocean. It was getting bigger in the window.

It was getting very close to the wings and I thought ''we are about to ditch in the sea here''

Anyway, faith in your pilots is what was required as they made a perfect touchdown on the Runway.

The approach gives you a good view of the neighbouring city of Oakland. Its off to the right as you decend. You actually fly over the Oakland Bridge only a mile or so before touchdown.

Strage really because Bridges are the main reason for the relocation of the airport in the first place.

In 1936, The Golden Gate Bridge was constructed.

Due the sheer height of it, the airport, located not far from the site of the bridge, had to close due the clearance problems.

So the new airport was built out of town.

When I say out of town, Its about 10 miles from Central San Francisco, to the south.

There are 2 sets of hotels here.

One set by the airport. Handy for stopover flights but not much else.

One set in the City. Good for sightseeing and tourism but not handy for flying.

They operate a shuttle bus to and from the Major hotels and Airport. It costs $12 per person and its door to door service. The driver knows where he is going and is friendly enough.

Hire cars and taxi are also available here.

Parking is plentiful too.

The terminals in USA are very straightforward. They seem to be more open plan than here.

You are either Internal or an international traveller.

2 seperate terminals and drop off points for each.

They also ask what airline you are with when dropping you off as each airline has its own desk and location in the terminal.

Very good idea I think.

I got to fly into San Fransisco twice and out twice in 10 days.

Flying out internally is like catching a bus. Very easy. Just hop on and off you go.

Flying out internationally was the same.

Check in time is kept to about 10 mniutes maximum where ever you are. The Desks for the airlines take your bags, no matter where you are going. They sort them out once they have them. Not like our airports where its one desk/one plane.

Much less stuffy than the English Airports.

Shopping is not quite as good as our Airports though. Duty Free is restricted to a couple of shops and only a couple of places to eat.

When you think of the multiple shops we have in the departure lounge, you would be suprised at the lack of them.

Flying internally provided more choice of eateries.

Pizza Hut was one Brand I noticed and Star Bucks Coffee.

The staff are very polite which was nice, but most of them are after a tip.

That was one thing that annoyed me about San Francisco. Everyone was looking for a tip no matter how little they do for you.

Anyway, Its a nice airport that is quite modern that is very clean but lacked any decent shopping facilities.
