Reliance India Mobile 'Sehwag Ki Ma' ADS is fails
Mar 28, 2023 05:34 PM 217 Views

I recently came across the commercial for Reliance India Mobile's'Sehwag ki Ma' and it left a bad taste in my mouth. The commercial is a typical advertisement featuring a celebrity endorsing a product, however, it fails to deliver anything new or interesting to the audience.

The commercial starts with Virender Sehwag's mother looking at the Reliance India Mobile phone and saying how it is a great product. She goes on to say that her son recently bought her the phone and that she is very happy with it. What follows is a series of cliched shots of Sehwag's mother using the phone to listen to music and make video calls.

The commercial fails to deliver any real value to the audience. It does not showcase any of the features of the phone, nor does it offer any meaningful insight into the product. Instead, it relies on Sehwag's mother to deliver the message, which is not effective. Additionally, the commercial does not give any information about the price, features, or even the availability of the product.

Furthermore, the commercial does not do justice to the brand. There is no mention of the brand’s commitment to quality or its customer service.

RELIANCE IS NOT A STANDARD AT ALL.
Nov 13, 2010 04:42 PM 11205 Views

I own reliance mobile since seven years when the offer came for 500 RS and continue to keep this phone because unfortunately ones identity is by phone number not in any other way.

I have lots of complaint but have forgotten because what they say they are not at all and REILAINCE IS NOT A GREAT MOBILE CONNECTIVE BE IT MOBILE PHONE OR THEIR SERVICE IS NOT UPTO MARK.

There are some features that make one to continue to keep this phone, why one may ask.

YOU GET MARRIED BUT THE PAIN AND PINPRICK CANT BE COMPARED.

In the same way Indians have this bad nature to be married to the same person who can be nagging yo u all the time of 24/7.

AM I JOKING OR REAL.Since reliance is not at all a great mobile site it is time one should try to accuse them in the court to get compensation.

BAD SERVICE AND CHARGES HAS TO BE EXAMINED.

FOR EXAMPLE.

you pay 30 RS and talk time of 24 rs.The discounted effect is 20 percent.

This is a great cheating on the consumer and I endured because to whom to complain.

INDIAN TELECOM AUTHORITY DONT BOTHER ON CUSTOMRES.

Now let me calculate how much it costs me when I call.

24rs GETS for me 40 single calls that means each call costs me 60 paisa.

What one should calculate is at 30 rs currency instead of getting 60 calls we get just 40 calls.

HOW MUCH IT IS LOSS IN PERCENTAGE LET ME EXPLAIN.

For 30 rs I get 24 rs.for 300 RS it is a loss of 60 rs.

if one make daily currency the net loss will be 2000 rs for an investmen t of 11000

so each year I loose 2000 rs and in 7 years I have lost 14000 rs.

what about those who fill currency of 100rs, they will be bearing a loss of 14000 rs a year.

WHAT ONE CAN GET BY 14000 RS.

Many poor families in india live with an income of just by 14000 a year, this money goes to porr

poor ambanis.

AMBANIS ARE REALLY POOR THAT IS WHY THEY SUCK OUR MONEY.

you need 40 billion rs worth house to keep wife and kids secured by the hard earned money .

WHO CARES FOR THE EXPLOITATION OF MOBILE COMPANIES.

ONE must fight for justice.we talk only to loose.

NOW WHAT I AM GOING TO DO.

I will stop filling in such a way instead of 30 rs a day I will make it once a week.

since incoming call is free, let those who want to talk to me worry.

ONE MUST SAVE TO TEACH COMPANIES WITH THEIR OWN METHOD.

NOW BACK TO COMPLAINTS.

1 phones get heated so fast and the battery also get week fast.

2 quality of the phone deteriorates so fast one need change each year.

3 Reliance to Reliance talk is total failure in south India.

4 south indians dont trust Reliance any more, i am waiting for a right time to shift.

5 Ambanis never learn lessons in their life.

i am observing both the brothers, their comapny shares are not worth investiment if one want to become a PAUPER IN LIFE MAY INVEST BOTH THE BROTHERS SHARED COMPANIES.

NOW AM I AGAINST THEM.

NOT AT ALL, their time has come for total decline.

let time speak the truth.

more I iwll add because mood is bad because my phone is disconnected because they want

ID PROOF ALL THE TIME, ANY NUMBER OF TIMES ONE SUBMIT THEY ASK AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO LET ME SEE IF I GET LIFE FOR MY MOBILE BY TOMORROW.

hope reliance will save by changes.

Well to begin with can anyone tell me whats the big fuss with sehwag's mom?

Its just a funny commercial thats gone down with the indian public in a way that they recall it with sarcasm, but anyways reliance is not complaining one bit.

Why did they advertise in the first place? or why does anyone advertise in the first place? to get the brand famous. To get the product famous n to sell it.

Wonder if the commercial was designed to be a funny one like it has turned out to be or was it initally designed to be a typical indian ideology kind of a commercial ?

If it was the latter, the ad agency has got it completely wrong and completely right in a way.

Well people are still talking abt the commercial makes it a winner all the way, just like Viru even if it wasnt well made (just like veeru's footwork)

But yes, both of them are a hit.

Viru n His commercial

I've heard that sachin, sourav n ganguly's mom's are shortlisting commercials wink

:: Sehwaag ki Maa commercial - HORRIBLE!!!!! ::
Jul 10, 2004 01:39 PM 4998 Views

What a horrible advertisement!!!!!! A pure marketing gimmick for Reliance India Mobile and a rock solid insult of our Indian cricketers!!!!

The Plot: Sehwag is batting like always on the field, and the Indian team is losing!!! Sehwag's small pal sitting in the audience is keeping his Reliance Mobile safe for him. Suddenly, it rings and Sehwag's pal answers it and hey presto! It's a video MMS sent by Sehwag's mom to her ladla!!!

Sehwag's small pal runs right upto where he is batting (there's no cop in between to stop him!!!!) and hands him the phone. 'KARLO DUNIYA MUTTHI MEIN!!' (which is Reliace's slogan, I may add!) says his mom in the video. This immediately encourages Sehwag and he starts hitting sixers, bringing the team success as they are about to lose the match!

What a totally illogical commercial!! Reliance Infocom should be sued by the BCCI for depicting that players are so distracted while on field, batting. Our man Sehwag also finds time to watch his mom on the phone in front of thousands of people while the bowler probably just stands there killing time, while Sehwag says hi-hellos to his Mom!

One totally totally horrible and huge mistake in the plot of this ad which proves that the admakers have no sense of scriptwriting and screenplay is that why would Mommy Dearest MMS her son if she knows that he is batting on field?!?!?!

What a waste of airtime and airwaves for sure!!!!!

Reliance - where customer care is the King !
Apr 22, 2004 01:54 PM 4481 Views

A brief incident:

....

Me: But (dear customer care), why did you change my number for no reason ...

Customer Care: It would be resolved within some time.

Me: But from the last 8 customer calls, made during the last 15 days, I have been hearing the same thing from all of you. Why cant you just retain my previous number back.

Customer Care: I am assuring you that this would be done.

Me: But can you give me a time frame ..

Customer Care: No sir.

Me: Thats bad!

Customer Care: Thankyou for calling Reliance sir.!

Me: What?

Customer Care: Have a very good day.!

------------------------------------ zapppp !!!------------------------------------------------

Now this is worst ever customer care I have ever talked to in my life. They are people who are ingrained with the complex that their customer has opted reliance for economy and it is the customer who needs Reliance and not vice versa.

Several similar incidents have happened when I literally had to lose my anger on the customer care. Billing is one of the most erratic concerns of Reliance. I never got my bil at my house. I asked them to change my billing address, they did (!) at one place but not at the other 99 places. So my address gets changed for the display but for billing it remains the older one.

Even after paying the bill you keep getting stupid warnings ''To avoid inconvenience please pay your bill...''. Some incomprehensible stuff in the beginning but later I got used to it and took it with light humor and contempt.

----------------

I had been paying all my bills always. I began dialling an std number one day to wish a cousin of mine. I found that STD had been debarred on my phone. Called up the customer care.. tried to convince them that all bills of mine were paid. But they didn't have my bill payments updated there. They asked for the ticket nos. of the bill payment... and obviously it was lying somewhere in my house (though I was at office). Even with much pleading and requesting my std wasn't enabled for the next 6 days.

There was nothing I could do. I again made a phone to Reliance customer care and repeated the same thing(without the ticket no.) which was said in the first complaint. Luckily the person found my data and cheque with which I made the payment long 20 days back.

I was so happy that I didn't even expect to hear a sorry from their side for the inconvenience caused.

And once I was told by them that there is no Internet on the Landline connection with 500 Rs/month rental. Later I found out that there was Internet facility on it.

But one thing is for sure, a person is lucky enough if he gets his problem solved by the customer care. They are such a bunch of uncaring customer care which are of no help to the customer.

One cannot just compare the service one gets when one takes a GSM and Reliance WLL. There is no match between their services.

Want harassment for life ? -buy reliance mobile !
Mar 07, 2004 01:45 PM 4466 Views

Hi friends,

I am writing this review for the benefit of all those people who may be thinking of buying a reliance mobile.

This is a real experience endured by one of my friends who made the mistake of subscribing to reliance infocomm's service.

This friend, a fellow female mba student was receiving obscene calls and sms's from other reliance customers from all over the country. She spend more than 2 months going to reliance infocom's office in nashik and later in pune [ aundh and F.C road].

For the first few times she was assured that the problem would be sorted out 'soon'. Then she was told that the problem could not be solved as 'you must have given the number to all these people who are calling u' [ imagine !!! why would a person distribute her reliance cell no all over the country????].

Anyways the reliance imbeciles are totally bereft of reason or a brain for that matter. So 3 months later she gets the final reply that the problem cannot be solved. Period.

The obscene msgs and calls contine, reliance ppl find out from their database who all harassing her but they don't disclose and say they can't do anything about it [ she has written proof of the complaint that she made at the aundh-pune office]

Now the icing on the cake. Surfing the services in r-world one day she found that there is a facility of delisting from the reliance directory. Every single customers name, address and phone no are displayed here [ so lot's of girls may be getting harassed methinks ]. She dislisted her name - sms and calls reduce in no.

one problem solved [ 3 months later and no help from reliance infocomm customer service]

Then she gets a bill of abt 5000. She asked for certain clarification [abt roaming charges etc which were never answered]

She is promised that on paying 2000, her cell will be reactivated.

She paid 2000 rs, 3 days later cell is still no reactivated. No incoming/ outgoing calls/sms.

Repeated visits to the office. Answer '2 hrs main ho jayega madam'

3 days later. *333 customer service - answer given is 'mam u have to pay the full amount'

This is the biggest lie from them till date - why did u promise reactivation on 2000 rs if it was not to be done ??????

And readers, trust me reliance staff largely has no idea of what all service are available. They do not know how to talk to cutomers.

So if anyone is even remotely thinking of buying reliance, DON'T !!!!!!!

Reliance nearing it's first anniversary!!
Feb 04, 2004 09:56 PM 3067 Views

Reliance is almost nearing its first anniversary. I'm here to point some of it's advantages and disadvantages. I bought reliance mobile in April 2003. When it started, the service provided by then was bad, but there was good improvement later. However still they have to achieve more when compare to GSM service provider. For example..

1) We can't send SMS to some of the service provider like BSNL, Aircel etc....

2) Billing service is very bad.

Now, One of the biggest advantage is roaming. Compare to other services they are providing roaming at the cheapest rate. Also plan 149 and plan 249 is good for those who prefer pre-paid card.

The ''monsoon Hungama'' mobile for Rs 500 made there standard worse. Most of them bought reliance mobile phone for Rs 500 and used it for nearly 5 months without paying their bill. However they tasted profit this year. The reason is they are getting (or they got more initially) more for mobile phones. The cost of the mobile phone that they provide will be around Rs 1000.

Non-reliance customers r getting profited then reliance customers becoz of reliance boom, because after reliance entry, all service provider have reduced their rates.

Disadvantages:

Bad billing. Charging more for membership and for mobile phone

Changing from one plan to other plan, they are costing Rs 350.

Change of address costs Rs 1000.

Advantages

  • Valuable Roaming

  • SMS is cheap compare to other services.

  • Better when compared to other service provider's post-paid scheme.

FARIDABAD india
RELIANCE VS GSM's
Nov 29, 2003 03:14 PM 15113 Views

Hi friends this is my 3rd review on mouthshut.com . I have been using cellular phones from past 3 years and currently I have changed to reliance india mobile after a period of using gsm service like idea , hutch ( my favourite) , airtel. I am just sharing my experience and differences between reliance and any gsm's as of NOW.

1) Covrage area ( delhi noida ghaziabad faridabad ( im from this place) ) both in reliance and in gsm's beacase they treat delhi and some of NCR as a single unit in GSM's u have 10 digit number starting from 98 like 9811445388 and only single number . any one has the dial this number ONLY from any where delhi , or gurgaon or fbd , noida etc. but in realiance you will be given 4 numbers one is eight digit number like 33154584 ( mine) and there others are of seven digits like 3214532, 3562233, 3232153 for noida , gurgaon and fbd resp. although any one can catch u from any of the number from 4 . but u have to take care of the prefix code like if will dial the gurgaon number which is 3562233 u will need to prefix 95124-3562233 and and of delhi it's 9511-33154584 ( if u are dialing from outside delhi) so u have to think of the proper code and one should be aware of the codes in reliance . otherwise your call may not be treated as a local call . but I remember only my first and the main number which is 011-33154584 if some one is calling from delhi he need's to dial ONLY 33154584 if outside delhi I mean ncr are he need to dial 9511-33154584 ( although he may call at my local numbers like from my home (fbd) . but I really don't remember the other 3 numbers.

so the gsm - simplicity of having single number

reliance - confusion of prefix coding sometimes

2) signals - relaince has good siganls but not good inside the bus or train or basements . but very stronger at promenent palces like lajpat ngar , faridabad etc. Among GSM's best is HUTCH I like its siganls and add ( where ever u go our netwrok follows) is very true and proven . Airtel at 2nd best and idea 3rd and govt dolphin at last ( I have't used even but m afraid of govt. servieces except MOTHER DIARY) idea has very good advertisment but very poor signals and service. aitrel has many lines for subscriber when compare to hutch. but some times airtel signals does not come in the basements where hutch shows almost full signals.

3) connectiviy WLL relaince has little late connectivity when dialing from any land line when compare to gsm which has speedy connectivty from dialing from any landline . when calling from handsets WLL relaince has quicker connectivity when compare to gsm. but WLL has more network conggestion and it shows funny messages like ''THERE IS NETWORK CONGGESION IN THE OTHER NETWORK '' ( which other network I am dialing the reliance customer care only )

4) BILL - my first bill is 469 rs which is okay and I have been given a free reliance number for 10 months for free talk. which I like most ( bcoz its of my sisters ) when using GSM ( prepaid I ever used) my max expense was 500 indian rs.

5) handsets - gsm u have to purchase ur handset and insert the SIM card provided by your gsm operator . so u are indpendent of the handset .( u can insert this sim in other handset if required. but LALA relaince provides u a programed handset from NOKIA , LG OR SAMSUNG I have lg ( its good ) all wll handset are polyphonic . in gsm I have used motorola v2088, pansonic , nokia 3310 in which nokia was very good in siganls and battary backup in WLL Technology they have louder speaker sounds ( almsot double when compare to gsm's ) but there sets at least samsung and lg feel HOT if u will speak a lot .

6) customer care - gsm has good all at one platform kind of officers placed at call centers . but realince has lakeer ke fakker kind of customer officers. and they are very specific ( like for billing press 2 and u have to press 2 only otherwise u can't get billing info. and if u have 10 different queries u have call 10 times funnly :-) )

7) features - realince rworld is very beakar and never works proprly call confercing I liked a lot and its' free . 10000 sms for 2 months is good and night calling feauters has many confusion they have charged me even after I called at night calling after 10 pm .

8) roaming and value aided service -> both equal and in VAS gsm is higher. I am missing only the SIMPLICITY OF HAVING 1 NUMBER AND NO NEED TO PREFIX ANYTHING IN GMS a lot now its your wish what u want comments will be apprciated thanks prem premin1979@yahoo.com 011-33154584

Disconnect between USP and Message
Sep 13, 2003 10:59 PM 3233 Views

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong but the real problem I can see in this case is the disconnect between the vision behind Reliance Mobile which also transcends into its USP and the kind of connect the ad tries to make.

I have to say I really didn't care very much for the Ad but more then that what surprised me was the way Reliance was trying to market it's product. Lets understand what Reliance really is selling its connections on- the one golden mantra (at this point at least as all the add ons are really not being pushed much) is the price. What Reliance really needed to do was look at the savy businessman- the man who valued the cost advantage Reliance provided them. Talk to them how much cheaper it could be for him and perhaps his organisation if they switched to Reliance. Thats what you needed to talk about- how the cost advantage could translate into better channelising of funds for an individual or an organisation. That would have been a powerful message. Lets look at the youth segment- advertise the cost advantage while never ever letting the product go down market. The youth segment which would always regard cost as important also finds the need to be considered upmarket and trendy extremely important. In their case a powerful brand ambassador would have been perfect.

The advertisement itself focusses on some wierd kind of connect between the phone and a winner. What makes the winner, let me know if you find out. I think Reliance forgot something very important- ''the consumer isn't stupid. She's your wife''

Bakwass Ad for a bakwass product
Jun 11, 2003 03:36 PM 2901 Views

I believe the customers will now be having a fair knowledge of the sapna of Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani.

i mean launching this kind of a product was never expected fro such a reputed company. I have a real life experience with this product and it is not up to the mark as it is shown by commercials. talking about the Sehwag ad, I will say it is a bakwass ad because in this ad they r trying to exploit the sentiments of indian customers keeping aside the real characteristics of the product. They are just showing us one side of the coin I mean a few benefits. but largely the Reliance India Mobile has failed to deliver.

The Reliance India Mobile

the main defect of the product is that it gets heated after operating it foe a few minutes which is just not acceptable.

Second, the customer is made to get trapped in a three year agrement so that he can not discard the service but Indian people have got the way out by bouncing the cheques.

the very concept of their DAEs was not fool proof. The DAEs felt cheated after the launch of the service.

the service quality is very poor. Reliance to cell call is not easily connected.

Pune India
Completly Ugggh!
Jun 04, 2003 04:16 PM 2696 Views

BAd concept, bad idea, and why would somebody's mother sms an x person when she knows that her son is playing and in the field.

Truely idiotic.

Especially the part where the child runs onto the field and all that is absolutely needless and use less.

The so called oposing team is farly better presented.

I do not understand the relation between Shewag and the man who receives the sms or whatever. Also the kid and everything.

If possible can anyone give me the information as to which agency has creatde this ad.

I'l be grateful.

The concept no where does it satisfy the need of publicity for the product.

Papa maal le jayenge..Maa ki daant padegi
May 06, 2003 04:15 PM 3059 Views

The advertisements featuring Reliance India mobile - the marriage wala and the bedtime story wala - sure strike a emotional chord with viewers. The one which Shewag is a drag though. The ad agency has sure done a good job on presenting the product in the most utilitarian fashion. Reliance India mobile has more than a million subscribers to their service now....but alas...does it really work out the way it has been presented ...

This ad paved the way for a joke....When Sourav Ganguly was asked what he had to bring from the SA World Cup - He replied and was joined in unison by the Indian cricket team - Shewag ki Maa.

New jingles go like - papa ka sapna ...sabka maal apna...subscribers do not realize that they end up paying about Rs. 24,000 for the connection over a period of three years. Boy !! That sure is a lot of money for Reliance. I just hope they manage to deliver the goods.

Anyways, guess everyone has to decide for oneself. Happy talking !!!

Caught Reliance, bowled customer
May 06, 2003 11:53 AM 4934 Views

Hey all you pappus, jaggus, bittus of this world; hey all you Sehwag crazy janata out there, did you see Sehwag sizzle for Reliance? Dont you hear Sehwag calling out to his Ma on his Reliance? Dont you want to be like him? Dont you feel the adrenaline rush when you think of winning a match because of that magic SMS on your lovely Reliance?

And so while I sit under the shady tree watching the mad Najafgarh crowd rush into the Reliance store, I can't help thinking about this whole fundamental thing called Communication. WHat is Communication? What is good communication? Who should you communicate with? How should you communicate? How desperate should one be to communicate? What should one say? And if your millions are burning to keep your communications business warm then what must you do to get a handsome return on investment?

Well, Reliance gave bat, pads and helmet (which he later threw away in disgust!) to Sehwag, to help answer all my questions thus -

What is Communication?

Communication is when Sehwag's mother sends an SMS message to a random somebody in the crowd; who then ignores the message; but the kid next to him grabs his phone and runs onto the ground, dodges and outruns the cop, and flings the phone to Sehwag screaming ''message for you''. (Communication is when Sehwag knows enough english to understand ''Message for you''!)

What is good communication

Good communication is when Sehwag receives a SMS message with his mothers picture in the message (for sake of authenticity!) in the middle of the stadium. (if your message reaches IN SPITE of Reliance's service then you've got good communication!)

Who should you communicate with?

You should communicate with your son, especially when your son forgets his cricket coaching lessons and tries to play airy-fairy shots to balls going wide of the off-stump! (communicate with anyone who can read hindi written in english script!)

How should you communicate?

You should communicate via SMS since Reliance phones are not very good for voice communication (crackling and breaking voices you know!); and you should remember to put your picture in the message. (since the stumps dont have a built-in phone yet, the only way is to make a kid fling the phone to the batsman!)

How desperate should one be to communicate?

You should be so desparate that you should track down a guy in a crowded stadium who has a reliance mobile phone. Get his number, send him a message. Get the kid next to him jump into the ground with the phone and throw it to the gloved hands of your son! (jump, scream, pump, do whatever. Just throw the SMS laden phone to somebody out there.)

What should one say?

If you are Sehwag's mom, you should say ''get the world into your fist''. That will make a world of difference to your son; pump up his adrenaline, and make him smash the ball over the fence for a six, ala Javed Miandad! (lets play ball with the world!)

How to safegaurd your telecom millions?

Get a hundred people to lift Sehwag (hes not very light you know!) as he shouts ''Ma'' over the din of the crowd. (He has his mother to thank for his performance, no thanks to Reliance)

Moral

Have courage to communicate even if you are faced with a wall of silence called Reliance. Just Communicate and the lord will pass on your message!

Maa, Main aa raha hun Maa !!

After seeing a spurt of reviews on Reliance Ads, I too did an analysis of all Reliance Ads, a Projective one though, analyzing the possible impact Reliance could have on various industries in the future. Presenting my observations, thoughts & analysis (In case Mumbai MSians are wondering, why am I into so much of ‘Observations’ for the last couple of days, blame it on the Whisky I had at Maddy’s Place.)-

Impact on Corporate World

That a few years hence, Corporates would launch a Papa Kehte Hain Scheme as part of their HR Policy. Under this scheme, employees above a particular grade (M4 as in my company) can utilize 60 minutes of their weekly schedule for narrating bed time stories to their kids. This is to facilitate these employees who work for more than 14 hrs per day, and are eventually in the company itself during the bed time.

That the HR Policy would also say: Employees can avail this scheme for not more than 2 kids (legal or illegal) during their association with the company. The company will also foot the bill (in case Reliance hikes it from their current levels, which is very much expected) for these calls, as long as they are within the prescribed duration.

That HR would also launch a Privilege Communication Protocol Policywhich would clearly highlight which Grade(s) Employees have the privilege to receive calls from their kids during a Board meeting, and which Grade Employees can receive and leave the meeting for narrating stories.

That its easy to envisage that this would be followed by a Karlo Bacchha Mutti Mein recognition award, for those Papas who manage to put their kids to sleep within the allotted time. This performance data would be monitored through SAP and would be reviewed annually during the Appraisal..

Impact on Bollywood

That if Mukesh Ambani wanted to sponsor a scene in a movie showing his product (as is the current craze now, eg. Paas Paas in Yaadein), he would have opted for a remake of Deewar, where Amitabh during the concluding phases of the movie comes to the temple, to meet is moma dear. The scene would be shot thus: Amitabh despite being bruised manages to reach the Temple earlier than his moma. Seeing that his Mom is not there, he painfully lifts a Reliance Mobile from his suit & Says Maa ! Main aa gaya. Aap Kahan hain Maa. (Mukesh! Don’t Cry. What an emotional scene. CUT!)

That if this scene hadn’t appealed to him, Mukesh would have probably asked the dialogue writer to script another immortal scene thus:

Amitabh: Mere Pass gadi hai, bangla hai…. Tere paas kya hai?

Shashi: Mere pass Maa hai….(and then with a sly smile continues)..aur Maa ke paas Reliance hai. (Applause ! Seeti!!)

Impact on Matrimonial ads

That even the most liberal n open minded Matrimonial ad would read ‘Seeking alliance from anyone qualifying as a Female in the genetic sense. Age, Religion, Caste, Physical Appearance, Mental State - No bar. Girl even from Chandini Bar is not a bar. Only Bar:Shouldn’t have Reliance Mobile’. Coz how much ever you say Papa Don’t Preach, a girl’s Papa wouldn’t lose an occasion to do so!

Impact on Cricket

That I feel John Wright will be relinquished from his services, and instead Shewag ki Maa will be appointed as the Coach. Her only duty would be call the players playing in the middle using a Reliance Mobile at critical junctures of the game. That if the scheme is found successful, Saurav ki maa, Yuvraj ki Maa, Rahul ki Maa, Sachin ki Maa can also be trained for similar job profiles, so as to have the Maas from all 4 directions of the country, to form a Reliance ki Maa- a Strategic n Integrated match winning combination.

That this also means in future, India would start blaming the Maa for their failures, rather than the Pitch or other external conditions. I hope these Maas know how to operate a mobile, otherwise our guys would perish in the middle waiting for their Maa to call.

That this also makes me wonder Kiski Maa calls the Australian team?

That I would request the BCCI to send Kisika tho b Maa to the WestIndies, Coz thats my fave cricket team (even now) and they are going through their most abysmal phase.

My Impact for the Competition

That if I were from a competition vendor, I would make my ad which shows the Papa calling the Kid (pro-active Papa) to tell a bed time story. And when the kid asks 'Papa why are you calling to tell a story?', the Proud Papa says, 'Kyunki Bete, I will get late in this traffic which is limping right now, coz Reliance has dug the roads here'.

Finally, a few theories about these Reliance ads

That Reliance Ads have used EMOTION as the theme for their ads, which is the most sought concept now for most media campaigns so as to ensure consumers relating to a brand & retaining a ‘top of the mind’ brand recall. A study on Consumer Behavior will infer use of the following theories:

Episodic Memory: Where the marketer associates the product to an event in a person’s life (eg. Marriage, Bed time story)

Affiliation: A concept based on a Consumer’s External social motivation (McGuire’s Psychological Needs Theory), which creates purchase motives based on Relationship. (Maa-Son, Paa-Beti etc)

Stimulus Generalization: Where knowledge of a company / Brand is generalized over its other products. Reliance is trying to play on the Brand Name, and also using Causation by using picture of Dhirubhai Ambani!

That all these concepts come under the category of INTERNAL INFLUENCES of Consumer Behavior.

INFERENCE

That Reliance has used a marvelous concept for a Mass Media Campaign, but they have dug their own grave as far as gaining meaningful emotional connect is concerned, by portraying lousy Situational contexts.

…..ab Meri Maa bula rahi hai, NO! she doesnt have Reliance. Maa ! Main aa raha hun Maa !!

Ever wondered what the sight of a mother can do to her son?

Watch this ad

I dont go in any of the details of this ad as I am sure most of you must have watched it some time or the other especially when sehwag failed which he did in most of the world cup matches (I am sure he must have got used to scoring in the replays oh! im sorry retakes of the ad)

The only thing I wonder is that if I knew Sehwags mother(which is the only way out to the question why she knows my mobile number?) why would I shout SEHWAG ki MAAAA instead of AUNTY if she Mobile cum SMSed me?

What is the similarity between Dhirubhai Ambani and Virendra Sehwag? Obviously, the fact that they both came from humble origins. Dhirubhai rose to prominence after being born to a village schoolteacher in Chorvad in Junagadh. Virendra Sehwag, has not exactly scaled the peaks of success but his rise to semi-superstardom from the bylanes of Najafgarh has been equally remarkable. I am trying to draw a parallel between the two for one very obvious reason – Virendra Sehwag has modeled for Reliance India Mobile. It is a hypothesis but one which stands on solid ground. I feel that while deciding the model of the Reliance India Mobile, the entire team behind the campaign must have taken a very hard look at Sehwag’s bio data, and may have selected him on the basis of his similarity with the founder of the Reliance Group of Industries.

Now coming to the commercial. The very basis of popular, commercial art is its ability to strike an empathetic cord with its audience. In this particular commercial, we have all the ingredients that make (or should I say once made) for a successful Hindi film – nation, mother, a fight-to-the-finish, and an innocent child.

The commercial is visually located in a one-day match. India needs six runs to win of the last two balls, a la Lagaan. Virendra Sehwag is on strike against a bowler who resembles the exiled Zimbabwean bowler, Henry Olonga. Sehwag misses the penultimate delivery. There is a huge sigh from amongst the spectators, particularly a man and a young kid. Who the guy is we never discover. Ditto for the kid. Suddenly, Sehwag’s mobile that is with the duo (Why? Confounds me to date) rings. His mother is on line. The man says, “Sehwag ki ma. Later,” and tries disconnecting the phone. The young boy grabs the mobile set from his hands and beats all the security guards to reach Sehwag in the middle. Sehwag gets to read his mother’s message (It was a call, wonder how it got transformed into a SMS?) – “Kar lo Duniya Muthi Mein.” Blessed by his mother, Sehwag smashes the final delivery for a huge six and is given a hero’s treatment by the spectators.

I really do not know how many mobile phones the company managed to sell courtesy the commercial, but one thing is for sure - it has made a celebrity out of Sehwag’s mother. During the world cup, there was so much on her – Sehwag’s mother in newspapers, Sehwag’s mother sending best wishes to Kaif, so on and so forth.

We Indians do appreciate sentimentality, but these days we take it in controlled doses. Any excess in the same is instantly rejected by us. I believe that is what happened to the ‘Sehwag ki ma’ commercial. The amount of sentiment dished out by the creative team of the television commercial was far in excess to what we expected. Hence, instead of making us melt, it has most of us chuckling.

Everything about the commercial seemed artificial and contrived – the fact that Sehwag’s mother calls up not before the match but just as the bowler was marking his run up to deliver the final ball of the match in a do or die situation, was ridiculous; the manner in which the young boy says “No” and then rushes to hand over the mobile phone to Sehwag was straight out of a B-grade masala movie; and to top it all, Sehwag on the shoulders of his fans appeared bloated and comical. Sorry guys, but this commercial left me cold.

Dear Sehwag, you usually hit a lot of sixes, but this time, you were caught at long on.
