This book "Not A Penny More Not A Penny Less written by Jeffrey Archer" is very popular in the world and one of the most wonderful books I've ever read, you can't put it down when you start reading. This book topic is very nice and very important for our life and our society. This book language is not very hard so I suggest for reading this book.

LOVE HIS BOOK

Written in 1976, Not a Penny More. is based on a sham oil strike in the North Sea by Prospectus Oil, the godchild of one Harvey Metcalfe, a very successful and rich stock hustler. An American, David Kesler, becomes the innocent shill for Metcalfe, pushing shares and hopes of a quick fortune. Kesler is not a high powered salesman, he simply dangles the carrot and lets greed do the work for him.

The story includes a group of four high-rollers who are swindled as Metcalfe dumps his own holdings on his unsuspecting investors: Stephen Bradley, an Oxford mathematician, Dr. Robin Oakley, a successful but bored London practitioner, Jean-Pierre Lamanns, art dealer, and Lord Brigsley of considerable family money, much of which he sinks into worthless shares. All told, the group invests, individually, around one million dollars.

When they discover their shares are all but worthless, the group plots revenge. Through a series of intricate scams they will swindle the swindler, nicely, of course. The plans will eventually involve Metcalfe's own daughter who has fallen in love with one of the plotters.

This is quite an enjoyable read, done in a light-hearted fashion, with most of the standard thriller elements-sex, violence and car chases-omitted.

This reader did encounter a few difficulties. There is no central character to root for. The early favorite, David Kesler, leaves the stage early in the book and is not heard from again. The introduction of the four new "investors" requires inclusion of considerable backstory, which slowed the narrative. There is also a problem of plausibility. Is it possible to pull off four elaborate scams, each requiring precise timing, in succession? Particularly when the subject is a con man himself? Or perhaps it's easier to kid a kidder, in this case, con man.

Archer's success is unquestioned. I believe this was his first book, and the beginnings of a solid career are quite evident in this work

Interesting book

Hilarious and Fantastic!

This is definitely one of Jeffrey Archer's best works, and one of my favourites. Other than the usual pace and thrills, the author packs in a lot of humour in this one. And humor such that you would burst out laughing like a mad-hatter.

The story starts at a pretty slow pace, and you would think that this is going to be boring. But the author is only building up the story. The story is of four different people, from different walks of life, who are cheated by a big businessman, a fraud. Its about how they come together to steal their money back. Tit for tat, and it is so much more than that.  One book you shouldn't miss.

Enjoyed reading !!

Not a penny more not a penny less is an excellent fiction. This book is absolutely suitable for those who are looking for a perfect storyteller to start with.

The storyline is full of events which are thrilling and maintains the continuity. The character sketch is very interesting as well.

It describes how, random people affected financially by the same person, meet up to get revenge against him.

Though sometimes I felt like the story is little too imaginative but it does not say it is a real story and can be digested.

Worth read!

The Birth of an Author
May 31, 2008 01:20 PM 6641 Views

The pen is mightier than the sword they say. Its very true in this case. For a new timer, this storyline. the character buildup and entire essence of the story is held from the beginning to the end.

I read this book in 2005 when one of my friends suggested that I should probably get out of the sleaze and pretty similar type stories of Sidney Sheldon and venture into a new territory. That was the beginning of a new friendship with Jeffrey Archer. ;)   " Not a penny more, Not a penny less "incidentally happened to be my first novel. The storytelling, the script and the basic plotline was fluid. Honestly, this is the best and I mean the best I've read so far from a new-comer.

The basic storyline is about the stock market and how one individual named Harvey Metcalfe is able to circumvent the system and use it to his benefit. As his wealth in his new found venture increases, his enemies also grow rapidly.

I will not spoil the surprise by telling you how a few individuals were swindled by Harvey Metcalfe. Instead the characters, Stephen, Robin, Jean-Pierre and James get upon a plan to take exactly what they lost to the last penny.

As you progress further in the book you will be really really fascinated by the imaginative settings and the stages that these young genius have created.

A word of caution. This book is addictive and so is the author. You will want to read each and every book of his and I'l be very happy if you do.

The birth of a new author has occurred. Watch closely for further attractions.

Cheers.

Brief Story Line:

This story is about 4 people Stephen, Robin, Jean-Pierre and James

Brigsley who are made bankrupt by a business master-mind Harvey

Metcalf. So these four join hands to take back exactly the same amount

of money that has been taken away from Harvey without letting Harvey

know about it.

Harvey set up a Prospecta Oil company and released its shares at a

very low price in England where he appointed three men Silverman,

Cooper, Elliot to take charge and kept himself away while making each

and every move cautiously. Who then appointed David Kestler as

executive working under MD Mr. Elliot. David involved Stephen, Robin,

Jean-Pierre, James Brigsley to buy shares and the value of shares keep

going up as David was assured that it will reach £10 then to sell the

shares and David told this to Stephen, Robin, Jean-Pierre, James. But

one day when he went to office he found it was closed and was taken on

rent, then he realized that he had been fooled and the value of shares

started declining. So he fled to America and the rest four who bought

shares were rendered penniless.

This made them join together to take back their amount. So everyone

was asked by Stephen to be ready with their plan of action. Everyone

was ready except James as he was a lazy person. So leaving for James

everyone's plan started to execute and they were able to extract the

money bit by bit which involved every one to play their part

efficiently. Meanwhile James apart from playing his part effectively

falls in love with a girl Anne Summerton. To whom he told about

everything and she tried to help him out to make his own plan.

After everyone's plan was successfully executed James met Anne's

father for approval for their marriage and to his surprise found that

he was none another but Harvey himself i.e. Anne is Rosalie Metcalf.

Nice novel but few weak spots
May 05, 2007 12:14 PM 6855 Views

Jeffrey Archer's "Not a penny more, not a penny less" is drafted on a great concept and story line is short, simple and keeps the reader interested through out.

Plot

One clever mastermind and self made millionaire, Harvey Metcalf turns from jobless young boy to multi millionaire in a  very short span all with his own clever tactics, both legal and illegal. In the process he cheats several people in several ways. Four of his victims, who lost their lifetime money in a stock market scam masterminded by Harvey Metcalf team up and decide to beat Harvey in his own game. They draft ideas, finalize plans and work as a team to recover every penny they lost to Harvey including the expenses incurred while recovering the same. First hal of the novel is about Harvey's legal and illegal activities(which made him millionaire) and the rest is all about how those four men recovered their money

I did like reading the novel and finished it in 2 nights, some 4 hours each.

However I have spotted following weak points in the story line:*

*1. Stephen Bradley  and team(victims of Harvey's Prospecta Oil scam) were to recover every penny they lost; not a penny more, not a penny less. But while they return from James wedding they were still around 1.24$ short. Is that not a deviation from their principle?

  1. They successfully duped a Nobel laureate, a world famous Doctor, university Vice chancellor and a world famous painting. In real life it is very much unlikely that this amount of impersonation will go undetected

  2. There was no counter plan by Harvey or anyone else while these men were cheating him. Had Harvey detected that he is being cheated and had there been some counter strategies the novel would have been more interesting to read. The story goes almost one sided.

  3. The first Para of the novel says Harvey managed to earn a million illegally, legally and even managed to retain it. But since he lost his money to four of his victims, I'm wondering how is this sentence is justified

  4. End of the novel: Prospecta prices soar again and those who bought Prospecta shares are now rich people. Stephen and team got more money than they had lost.Again a deviation from title.

  5. When James tells the secret to Anne or when he finds that Anne and Rosaline are same I was expecting this will backfire to their plan at some point(as it happens in Bollywood movies) but nothing happened as such. Rosa ended up being a silent witness to these four men robbing her dad(She even arranged$250000, may be all out of her love for James and in appreciation of these four men's efforts)

  6. In Monte Carlo, when Harvey becomes ill(due to powder mixed in his coffee) and Harvey's driver demands "Where are you taking my boss?" Stephen tells "We're taking him to hospital; you go back to Yatch." Why no one suspected "How did Stephen know about Yatch"?

What I liked

Still I like the novel for following reasons

  1. Tells you about stock market scams: How some people mastermind scams, manipulate share prices, make money and render several small scale investors penniless in the process

  2. Never give up. If you loose something there ought to be a way to get it back. The spirit of Stephen Bradley and his team is highly motivating experience

  3. Simple, straight forward narration and not a lengthy novel. Makes interesting reading through out.

Worth every penny...

Jeffery Archer’s ‘Not a penny more, not a penny less’, can best be described as a very pleasurable book to read. Its one of those ‘Feel good’ books, which are very gratifying to reader.

At the outset, the storyline seems to revolve around Harvey Metcalfe, a self-made millionaire and swindler extraordinaire, who does not think twice before pulling a hoax, which could affect the lives of thousands of people. However, the true ‘Heroes’ of the story, are four such affected people who wind up losing all their money on one of Metcalfe’s mastermind scams, a Mathematics professor bordering on genius, a white-collared doctor with a successful family practice, a French art dealer and a handsome, philandering but penniless ‘Lord’.

The story takes a mirthful turn when these four characters get together and resolve to get back from their Swindler, every single penny he stole from them, Hence the title, ‘Not a penny more, not a penny less.’ How they go about doing so, and whether they succeed in their design or not, forms rest of the story. The marvelous plots and meticulous planning that goes into each one of their ventures and the nail biting suspense enshrouding the execution of those plans makes a very good read.

However, the one part that did not sit well with me is that, in the beginning, the character of Harvey Metcalfe has been etched out as an extra-ordinarily cunning and shrewd businessman. So, later on it feels a bit far-fetched to see four men prey upon him successively, without his ever realizing that he is being taken to the cleaners. If you ignore that one part, the book is perfectly enjoyable.

The author has attempted and succeeded in delivering an excellent story loosely based on the age-old maxim ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’ and it gives a completely new meaning to the phrase ‘Don’t get mean, get even’. But despite it all, the cherry on the cake, is the climax, which is what maketh the whole experience truly hilarious and the book, as I said, ‘a pleasure to read’.

Although the novel begins at a negative note, it becomes sharp and humorous as the story takes off and thus begins a joy ride. Its a roller coaster ride with a lot of jerks, whirls and sharp U turns. The reader enters a virtual world with the characters and finds himself sharing their triumphs and conspiracies. The mantra is 'Tit for tat, and then some more'. Had enjoyed every bit of it. The end is a typical Jeffery Archer one, always on a positive note. Leaves a lingering impression of mischief and high spirit. Like other Jeffrey archer's has a tight story and is high on drama, but hey! thats what has made Jeffrey so adorable. The book however, stands apart from his other works which are mostly either absolute thrillers or family drama. This one can not be classified into either of those. A good companion on a weekend with a cup of coffee.

Introduction

Not a Penny More Not a Penny Less was the first novel I read from Jeffrey Archer. Till then I was graduating from the Nancy Drews and the Hardy Boys. To this day, I suggest this novel for youngsters just starting on the journey of hobby of books.

The Plot

Harvey Metcalf is an expert fraud. He swindles money from lots of people by making them invest in North Sea oil shares. Too late, they realize those shares are worthless and they have been duped. But not all give hope. Four gentlemen: an Oxford Don, an English Lord, a Physician and an Art Dealer resolve to extract revenge from Metcalf for taking away their life savings.

But the peculiar thing about the resolution is that they would extract the exact amount that they have been duped of ''Not a penny less, not a penny more.'' From this point on the story becomes an interesting narration of how four experts in their own field, hound an expert fraud by bringing him into their own respective domains.

The Pros and Cons

1) Considering that this is his first published novel, Jeffrey Archer has done a wonderful job. This guy is a great story teller.

2) The plot has a touch of mystic about it as the concept of getting back the exact amount is interesting.

3) The characters have been well etched and their roles have been well defined.

4) The story has been kept at a great pace apart from a slightly slow start.

5) The concept of the book is good.

6) A little bit of experience and slight more detail into the various characters would have done this book wonders.

7) Some of the concepts in the manner in which the four gentlemen extract their revenge seems far fetched at times.

About the Author

Jeffrey Archer is one of the most prolific fiction writers of our age. All his stories are fast paced stories with highly melodramatic climaxes. ''Not a penny more, Not a penny less'' was one of the first books written by him and till date I rate it as one of his best books. In fact the book's simplicity makes me recommend this book to anyone who wants to start reading novels.

Summary

Slick, fast paced and thrilling, it is hard to believe that this is the first book ever published by Jeffrey Archer. A nice little popcorn fiction for all ages. I would give this book a four star rating.

Total excitement worth every penny!

Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less is one of the books of Jeffery Archer which does not run into many pages. It is has a great plot, the story line is gripping and you can finish reading the book on a lazy weekend afternoon!

Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, is a story of revenge! Harvey Metcalfe, a Boston based self-made guru of deceit, stays behind the scenes and runs a stock scam involving some bogus petroleum shares at the London stock Exchange. Harvey happily goes away a million dollars richer and leaves behind four principal buyers, on the edge of financial ruin. All the four men had invested in the shares with dreams of becoming rich, but to their dismay, they discover that they are penniless.

The four men are strangers---they have ever met each other before. Stephen Bradley is a Harvard mathematics graduate, now a visiting professor at Oxford. Dr. Robin Oakley as the name suggest is a doctor. Jean-Pierre Lamanns is a French art collector and gallery owner. Lord James Brigsley is a lord.

Stephen Bradley chooses to get even with the person who had cheated them and he brings together the other three investors and makes a proposition. They decide to work together to get the one million dollars back from Harvey Metcalfe. They want all the money back---not a penny more, not a penny less! After all, combined effort is better than individual effort. They all agree to combine their individual abilities and expertise to come up a scheme to relieve Harvey of the exact amount he robbed them off.

Each of the four victims is supposed to come up with a plan of his own. The lord was initially not interested in the idea, but he ultimately surprises the other three with his plan. The four, with their neatly laid plans go ahead in pursuit of their goal of defeating Metcalfe and getting their money back not a penny more, not a penny less.

What are the individual plans, what do they do, how do they go ahead with their plans? What is the strategy? What happens in the end? Are the four people in a position to get back at Harvey Metcalfe as they wished to?

To know the answers, read the book :)

Think before you invest in the Share Market!!!!
Apr 16, 2005 06:24 PM 5470 Views

Hey Friends,

This is the very first novel of this immensely successful and multi talented author. Jeffrey Archer started his writing career by this book and has written some dozen other books which are short stories collections and novels.

This is a very satisfying read, and keeping in mind the fact that this was the first book of the author he has done a magnificent job in it. The story is fast, no loop holes, no slow patches, no confusion in the plot and the knitting of four different stories in the novel is simply amazing.

The Characters

There are half a dozen main characters in the story though there is no single 'hero' in the story.

Harvey Metcalfe is a US businessman who has a reputation of being shrewd and cunning and he has broken almost every rule in the book to make millions. As Archer says-Making a million legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all.

But Harvey is a person who has managed all three.

Stephen Bradley-an Oxford don, Dr. Robin Oakley - a Harley Street doctor, Jean Pierre Lamanns - a Bond Street art dealer and Lord James Brigsley - the heir to an earldom are the four other characters in the story.

Anne Summerton is the other very important character in the story but up till 3/4th of the story the reader will feel she is just girlfriend of James and a pretty face but in reality she is very important to story because of one fact that will only be revealed in the last 1/4th of story and it will take you by surprise. (And I am not going to spoil your interest here by telling it!)

The Story

Harvey raises a company in UK using some of his men. It is called Prospecta Oil. It is actually a fraudulent company but Harvey has done the illegal things remaining in the letter of law so many times that it is almost impossible to nail him.

(How the company is raised and the objective of the company and why the company is fraudulent and the trading hence done by Harvey is also wrong, read it for yourself!!)

Due to these wrong trading in share market Harvey makes $1 million. When you do something the way it is not supposed to done, you don't generate money for yourself, you actually steal some one else's money and become rich yourself. Same is the case here. The four people mentioned above are the casualties of this share market war.

But Stephen (the professor at Oxford) decides to recover the money back from Harvey, up till the penny - not a penny more and not a penny less. He invites James, Jean and Robin to Oxford and together these four men plan to fight Harvey. They make for separate plans to recover the money and they execute it to perfection, finally recovering all but $1 and 24 cents.

The Plans

The plans made by these four people are separate but they execute it together. They not only recover their money which they lost to Harvey but they also charge him to expenses and finally end up recovering more that $1 million, or should I say end up stealing from Harvey! But as the famous saying in India goes - Choron Ke Ghar Chori Chori Nahin Hera Pheri Kehlati hai (Stealing money from a thief is not theft it is called manipulation!!)

Recovering goes in four parts i.e. four separate plans by Stephen, James, Jean and Robin.

The Conclusion

The ending of story is even perfect. When finally these four men have recovered their money from Harvey something very strange happens in the share market. The prices of shares of oil companies start to increase and Prospecta Oil is also hit by the Bull Run. So not only they recovered their fair share from Harvey they finally end up making some money from his wrongly raised company in UK.

The Final Verdict

This is a finely written, well researched, amazingly knit story of four people who suffered in the hands of a businessmen with a 'not so good' reputation and finally recovered there losses. And God helps those who help themselves so they end up making money. The novel is very enjoyable and good for light hearted reading. It is best choice for people who have just started reading fiction, in my opinion it comes second to Sidney Sheldon's novels if you have just started to read fiction and like it.

It makes for a fine bed time reading, good for a long journey or perhaps a boring weekend. It is small novel of around 250 pages with simple language. People who enjoy authors like John Grisham might not be very excited about the language of the novel because it is so 'British' but then the author is also British so you can't expect those American slangs all the time but still it makes a good reading for a change.

It's a value for money novel.

Happy Reading,

Mr. Gautam

For a very long time I had been sceptical about reading any work by jeffrey archer...the reason was rather childish...my best friend had read his works before me and he didn't give me a flattering feedback. but last year I finally shed my inhibition cause I was lacking steady authors to read books on (bookworms would understand that you like taking an author and finishing all his works before to another, atleast that's how I work)....and was I not glad that I did read jeffrey archer!

NOT A PENNY MORE , NOT A PENNY LESS is the first jeffrey archer book that I read and I loved it. first because it has a very straight almost weaved in plot that involves a lot of planning and thrill and secondly because I loved the character of james spencer. He is the kind of guy who reminds me of a person who never wants to grow up and when he is forced to do so he obviously ends up complicating situations not only for himself but also for people around him... but these people are so sweet and benign and unsuitable for life in this world that god creates a rosalie arlene just to take care of them for each one of them.

This sweet (interesting epithet, won't you say?) novel is basically a story of the deceived trying to deceive the deceiver... (oh enough of deception now!)

Harvey Metcalfe, a polish immigrant through his cunning strategies and luck has made it big in america...so mush so that he is ultimately the king of shady deals. In one such of his heists he pulls of a big rake of mullah with empty promises of an oil bonanza and instant riches. And overnight four men .... james spencer (an heir to an earldom), stephen bradley (an oxford don), robin oakley (a harley street doctor) and jean-pierre lamanns(a bond street art dealer) find themselves penniless (this is excluding the poor david kesler!). But this one time harvey metcalfe has swindled the wrong men and thus these four band together and shadow him from the casinos of monte carlo to the high-stakes windows at ascot and the hallowed lawns of oxford. their plan is simple ... to get back exactly one million dollars that they had lost...to the last penny!

Some may say that such books have been written before and films with similar plots are made almost every week, so why should one waste one's time in reading it?... this is because believe me it's not a waste. the most important thing about such plots is its execution...

let's take an example...

Ocean's Eleven... this film has one of the most well executed plots ever... but its sequel ocean's twelve...well it would just be remembered as a sequel!

Not a penny more... has brilliant execution...the plot never sags... it has just the right amounts of romance, wit and savoir-faire to complement the marvellous plot. The way harvey swindles the unfortunate four is only bettered by the way they plan to swindle him back.

This is a must read for anyone looking for a light fun reading material durin travel or just when one's got the time on one's hand.

The language is smooth, hardly any jargons are used even though the swindled come from four completely different walks of life...and whatever technical terms are used are well-explained in the context.

Read the book and I am sure you would like it if not love it like me!

Light weekend fare - Nothing more nothing less!!!

I went on a date with one of those guys who make your heart bleed profusely for women folk who had the misfortune of enjoying their presence and that on that fateful day the woman beset with misfortune was none other than moi.

Of the entire fatuous exchange between me and this male version of a homo sapien what was interesting was that we discussed a good number of authors and books and this was a book suggested by this mere popinjay.

To give you a background of what inspired the author to churn out this story is as follows:

In 1973 Jeffrey Archer was advised to invest 1 million in a Canadian company, a visit from Scotland yard in the next year informed him that shares were worthless.

Overnight he was penniless and this rather unfortunate incident inspired him to write ?Not a penny more, not a penny less?.

In my opinion the novel is hardly a patch on his earlier works, which were marvelously plotted, with just the right amounts of romance, wit and savoir-fare. This novel is more like your regular Bollywood potboiler that finds it way to deserted multiplexes Friday after Friday. With loads of masala thrown in, its like a spin a yarn stretched beyond a point to utter disbelief.

The story starts with Henryk Metelski a Pole who lived thru depression and other distressing times and with sheer grit and loads of acumen rose from being a meager messenger boy to a high profile American Financier cum Businessman cum socialite cum page three wannabe?...

He became what few shuddered to dream about leave alone become.

To go with his newly acquired image he chose an equally swish and rakish American name - Harvey Metcalfe.

The very fact that a young messenger boy from a non-mainstream American background could rise to the level of having mega riches definitely was a prima facie evidence of his widely speculated but not yet documented unethical behavior.

One shady deal followed after another and soon Harvey had become a well-heeled, opulent man with a stash of ill-gotten wealth. His reputation was far from being unimpeachable but lack of evidence made him almost invincible and he always managed to get away from the dragnet of the law. Makes you wonder if the American Police were so incompetent and had the effrontery to admit their ineptitude why do Hollywood movies almost canonize them as prodigiously stronger and smarter than mere mortals.

Back to the novel

The author would like us to believe that Harvey was on everyone?s watch list but his near precise and accurate method of executing shady deals never let those muttonheaded cops gain an upper hand?predictable right??

But not until he decides to rob the wrong men.!!!

The astute businessman that Harvey was with 25 years of shady deals behind him, he floats a company called Prospecta Oil in London with empty promises of an oil bonanza and instant riches. To help him pull this ambitious swindle he and his cronies hire a fresh out of B-School goop - David Kesler; an American to play the role of the proverbial scapegoat. Impressed by the fake credentials and phantasm painstakingly created by Harvey and his cohorts Kesler ropes in one innocent victim after another to invest in Prospecta Oil. A whole lot of share market theatrics follows which makes them all believe that Prospecta Oil would help them double their investment and make them rich overnight.

Needless to say Harvey?s plans were anything but so altruistic ?

The shares of Prospecta Oil slumps and Harvey vamooses with the loot and surreptitiously the company and all its employees disappear too.

Fearing the brunt of law David Kesler too scoots off to distant America leaving four hapless Brits with a huge dent errr?cavern in their pocket. A total of 1 million dollars?phew

Overnight an heir to an earldom - young viscount James Brigsley, a London art dealer -Jean Pierre Lamanns, a Harley street doctor - Dr. Adrian Tryner , and a Harvard fellow at oxford - Stephen Bradley find themselves at the wrong end of a masterful million dollar swindle. And all they can barely gasp is gypped, conned, swindled?.

The rest of the novel is about how these four unwitting men gang up against Harvey in an attempt to win back their money without him even having the faintest idea. Soon you have a large-scale crook financier vengefully pursued by 4 of the most intelligent and most varied in expertise; men.

They band together and from the casinos of Monte Carlo to the high stakes windows at Ascot and the hallowed lawns of Oxford, Harvey Metcalfe is shadowed by these four unlikely conspirators as they plan to sting the crook for exactly what they lost. To the penny not a penny more not a penny less

As always there is a surprise element that Jeffrey throws in as Anne the porcelain like delicate beau of the rather doltish Viscount; James. If I write anymore about her I would be almost garroting the life out of this novel, which I don?t intend to. What is rather commendable is that the author takes a very silly plot and yet crafts it into a slick fast paced book. The plot is nothing short of pure bilge. It is extremely earnest in its attempt to prove that the readers are more feebleminded than the half baked dork James. 4 men however intelligent they are manage to fool a master swindle by assuming various guises is too far fetched by any standards.

This is where I would say the novel is like our Bollywood movies. However hare brained the plan is; Harvey is eventually duped. Come what may our quartet emerges with a quiet exhalation of triumph each time. ?makes you wonder is Harvey that perspicacious a crook if he can be fooled by these foolish plans.

The last few exchanges between the victorious Stephen (the wronged mathematician) and his cohorts are absolutely hilarious and so are the jibes hurled at the evidently lamebrained James and the randy Frenchman Jean over the lovely beauteous Anne and James lack of imagination which comes with his inability to churn out master plans like the rest. The repartees are fun to read and makes you chuckle endlessly.

A whole lot of things lead you to a suspension of beliefs. We are made to believe that the corpulent Harvey?s penchant for good life and convivial atmosphere is the reason why he is rendered short of 1 million. Whether its selling a fake Da Vinci painting?or Adrian posing as a famous America Doc Willy Baker the plot is ridden with holes. . You almost guffaw saying that hey I had last heard of this plot in Amar Akbar Anthony or some other typical pot boiler.

So you would give me a questioning look and ask so pray tell me why does this hackneyed trite novel deserve a three star?

Well it does because all said and done.. the master story teller keeps the pace deadly swift never lets it lose its tempo and however pedestrian the plot is you enjoy it cos you are dying to know what happens next.

It is definitely talent which makes you build great stories on firm steady plots but its sheer craftsmanship to make a great story out of a weak, moth eaten plot and Jeffrey Arthur has mastered this. The skilled craftsman that he is, he puts aside temptation to let it maunder, scream or otherwise let the emotions take over.

The plot reeks of a decayed imagination yet instead of creaking and groaning with its weight the novel still rises as a tight, fast paced book.

It?s definitely a good read on a lazy weekend afternoon over heavy scrumptious lunch.

Well this is probably Archers best book, certainly much better than 'first among equals' and 'shall we tell the prez'.

''Not A Penny More Not A Penny Less'' is about how 4 guys are duped in a stock scam by a guy for a total of 1 million $ and each of them comes witah a plan for getting a part of it back.

The characters have been introduced and created beautifully especially of harvey metcalfe and stephen and of course the Frenchie! There is everything in it - action, adventure, romanceand of course Archers famous dry humour.

I suggest u read on a weekend coz u will probably forget about everything else. The pace is so fast I read it during my exams in two days! really exciting and a novel plot.

I'm surprised that there isn't a movie on it. I would rate it on par with Kane and Abel. If you are a JA fan u won't be disappointed !! buy it, its worth every paisa !!its an ideal gift to give to someone too.

Well, I should say this guy definitely knows what he is doing!! The way he has taken us all along is something very very nice. I was so furious at my stomach when I had to keep this book down in order to finish my dinner. (Well, ofcourse, I was happy with my eyes b'coz I was able to forgo sleep!!!)

One can see that this is the first novel of the author. This might make you apprehensive about reading this book. But, believe me you will never regret. This novel is enough to gauge the author's capacity. Infact, as the novels proceed, he has improved a lot. This novel had given him international fame almost instantaneously. He is one such novelist who will (& is) definitely giving Eric Segal a run for his money, in the ''day-to-day life'' novels.

It is worth every penny you put into. No wonder, He is famous. Well, am feeling bad such a good author's career almost came to end b'coz of his imprisonment. But, ofcourse, he has come out with another one - PRISON DIARY. Yet, he could have come with a more impressive one.

Not a Penny More Not a Penny Less, this debut novel of the legendary

Jeffrey Archer is one of those rare novels which excites, entertains and thrill its readers till the very end. It is one of the stories that has very unusual and unexpected ends. The pace at which the events unfold and the dramatic end not only justifies the title but makes an excellent reading experience for light hearted times. Probably the novel was the perfect reason for establishing Jeffrey as a master story teller.

About the book.

Four people find themselves penniless overnight. Now they must get their money back one way or the other. What trauma these four persons undergo and how they manage to come up with a plan to outwit the person who put them in such peril, makes for exciting and fun reading. The plot loosens a bit here and there but that could only be attributed to the fact that it was the author's first novel.

Also the characters compliment each other very well. The incidents take place one after the other so as a reader at no point one gets bored of it. Archer has been able to explain the complexities of the business world and corporate working in details without getting into the un-necessary technicalities. Also through the medium of the four characters and one villan the author has been successful in his description of various jobs an individual has to pursue in one's career. All this in just over 300 pages. This makes it none-put-downable book.

Overall:

I rate this book as highly recommended overall. The style of writing and the plot of the book keeps one engrossed. Moreover one can finish it in a few hours. Not a Penny More Not a Penny Less in itself is a new concept. The basic thing is that one would sieze exactly the same amount one was stripped off. The four characters : the heir to an earldom, A Harley Street doctor, a Bond Street

art dealer and an Oxford don show immense character to sting the crook who robbed them for exactly what they lost: To the penny. Not a Penny more, Not a Penny Less!

Worth a 'million dollars'!!!

The novel deals with creative effort of four brains to fight a con man to get their money back. Surprisingly the story is not about the swindler (as it is in most of the books) but about the swindled.

One million Dollars – that’s what this delightful book is all about. Hey! Before you start jumping to wrong conclusions, let me clarify that it certainly does not deal about how to go about earning that kind of money.

.

The book begins by explaining how Harvey starts as a runner in the stock exchange to become a corrupt millionaire. His newest plot has to do with launching an oil company in the North Sea. Harvey snatches up a cheap permit and forms Prospecta Oil, quickly going public. He starts selling company stock with the story of an upcoming huge oil strike. He also puts eye-catching articles in the newspapers that lead to a virtual “Gold Rush” and his company shares are lapped up by thousands of innocent investors. He hires a young man named David to handle his stock and feeds him false information about a large oil field. David leaks the false information to four men who make large purchases of the stock. After Harvey sells all his stock at escalating prices he walks away. Overnight, four men, the heir to an earldom, a doctor, an art dealer and an Oxford don, find themselves penniless, thanks to Metcalfe’s business acumen. The four men together lose $1mn.

Each man, an expert in his own field, yet swindled by an expert in share fraud. Individually, they are helpless, but together, they stand a chance. The four decide to bond together and plot four foolproof plans. Their aim is simple: to steal back exactly what they lost, ’’NOT A PENNY MORE NOT A PENNY LESS.’’ (Net of all expenses, of course!) from the man who stole it from them in the first place. Metcalfe has made a career out of swindling people all his life but this time he has swindled the wrong men. Our four heroes band together and shadow him from the casinos of Monte Carlo to the high-stakes windows at Ascot trying to recover all their savings and to beat the swindler at his own game.

Each of the four gentlemen in question has a particular art or talent, which incidentally are also the hobbies of our venerable con man. Using their talents as Metcalfe’s weaknesses, they hatch separate schemes and plan them out to the last detail in getting the better of Metcalfe without arousing his suspicion.

For those who are more accustomed to Archer’s antics, the twist towards the end comes as no real surprise. In fact, one even begins to anticipate the climax. But never the less, an extremely fine read. Skillfully constructed and mellifluously integrated with Archers natural aptitude for story telling.

Some facts and truths in life are portrayed very well in this book, for instance-

Necessity is the mother of invention. Unless there is the dire need to do something we people do not venture into stuff and once the need arises we can go to any length to get our job done. That’s what the four men set out to do in the plot.

Opportunity knocks on you door very rarely and when it does one must jump, leap get hold of it, and make the best use of it.

Do they manage to recover back all the money that they’ve lost? I’m not telling you that, for the ending is magically woven, charmingly narrated and deserves to be read oneself. Revealing any further would be doing injustice to the great book itself, and who knows you might be cussing me for doing so. So I’d rather leave it at that.

I could not keep the book down until I had savored the very last page and I don’t regret it in the least. I think this book deserves to be read by every Archer fan.
