Kingfisher Beer after 20 years
Aug 19, 2003 05:56 AM

Hi,

I had the distinction of being invited to the United Breweries mansion in San Francisco where I have lived for the past 20 years.

At sunset cocktails were offered and reminiscently I asked for a Kingfisher beer and a Kingfisher beer I was served in a tall chilled etched lager glass.

The last Kingfisher I remembered having was just before my departure from Bombay for the US a long time ago.

For me this was a stellar moment in my life as I stood on the balcony overlooking the entire San Francisco bay, I knew I was sipping a memory, a wonderful memory. Thanks UB.

Since it is specified that this review should be atleast one hundred fifty words long, here I write further.

I must have by now tried most international beers around the world. Beers are tricky concoctions to brew. I can only say that all beers are not created equal. There are great beers and then some not very great. You guessed right, Kingfisher falls into the former category of great beers.

Now, beers-on-tap are a totally different cup-of-tea, if I can use such terminology. There for me the Germans brew the great beers served in no better a place than a 'beer keeler'.

King of great times
Jul 14, 2003 08:37 PM

Beer the word makes one think of a really smooth and cool drink after a hot and tiring day.

Beer is best enjoyed in a group and with lots of peanuts and more beer.

But why Kingfisher???

This beer is great for its minimum amount of alcohol and smoothness although its a little expensive but then good things never came cheap.

If I ever drink beer its only Kingfisher although I have tried other brands but then Kingfisher is Kingfisher.

It beats every other brand in taste and the smoothness with which it goes down ones throat through the food pipe and into the stomach.

The kick it gives after 30 minutes of drinking is so refreshing.

Beer=Kingfisher.

This is good beer. Taste is simular to Rollin Rock but a little different. The price is a little much for its taste I believe though. In Indiana, at a Big Red Liquer, I payed about $8.50 plus tax, (which we all know is how the national deficit is going to get payed) this is to much. This is a good changeup six-pack on payday but for it's price, it's not a everydayer. Keep tryin those different beers and after you've finished that six look at the price and then you'll be able to decide if its a good beer or a great beer, that your gonna have to keep stocked in your fridge. Happy trials and keep the bottom of your bottle pointed at the sky.

This beer taste like H20!
Nov 29, 2002 09:35 AM

I enjoyed this beer for a few years now when eating in the Indian restaurants in NYC. But after it was being made in upstate NY. This beer now taste like water! It doesn't possess any flavors at all. I give this beer two beerman thumbs down! Kingfisher lager beer just SUCKS! Plain and simple! The one from the U.K. was far more better and superior to the one in the restaurant now. I recommend the Haywards 5000 and the Golden Eagle for replacement when eating in a Indian restaurant. The only thing I like about the beer now is the label. This beer should never be consumed. If there is no choice, drink water or red wine.

Great beer
Jul 07, 2002 10:16 PM

The best indian beer in the market, no international beer comes close. especially good with the ladies. the price is not bad. 1 of the few indian beers to stand up to the imported stuff. has stood through all the changes. this is a good drink to have on a sunday afternoon. definetly on saturday nights. can consume more without worrying about hangovers. the sad thing about it is the weight gain from it. it is made for the indians so it goes with indian, chinease, italian any and all kinds of foods. should keep up the good work and reduce prices.

THE BEST MONEY CAN BUY
Apr 01, 2002 02:37 PM

The best money can buy, yeah that what kingfisher beer is all about (especially the milder variety). its just the one thing that lord shiva could have traded for his amrit, and if not him I would have certainly done it.

I would probably say that beer is my poison ,and could be yours too ,but I consider it a sweet as honey poison that has the ability to kill your worries for a while ,rather then killing you,as real poison would do.

and belive me fellow beer mate's KINGFISHER IS REALLY ''THE KING OF GOOD TIMES'' .

A beer a day, keeps ur worries away
Mar 21, 2002 03:48 AM

Ahhhh,

i get to write about beer,

a chilled long bottle on a sunny afternoon, with the music going on make my mind goes crazzyy man,

the first sip makes me remind myself that there is more to come,

kingfisher is my kinda stuff,

i love the pleasant taste which flows in my mouth,

the lovely smell and the right color always reminds me of the days when we all friends started drinking, yes we started with a bottle of Kingfisher,

i'm so lucky that I get to write about this now,

i dont like foreign beer,

kingfisher is what i'll always love and I recommend it strongly to you, not the strong beer, the mild one is the best.

cheers

Hic ! Hic ! Itz verrry nize beer!
Mar 13, 2002 05:47 PM

Not only does it taste good, it makes India proud also. Light golden in color with tiny bubbles, it is the only real Indian Beer to be exported and liked in the outside world.

''Most thrilling chilled!'', the label says and how right it is. Having any chilled beer is something, having a chilled Kingfisher is something else altogether, it's heaven!

A very interesting detail that I got about this beer goes

''....high gravity lager is kept in copper urns for over 2 months. Copper stimulates the yeast and imparts its flavour in the beer.'' So now we know!

So guys, if you are non-drinkers, start drinking Kingfisher because if you start with anything else, the permanent taste in your mouth will not let you enjoy Kingfisher ever.

If you don't drink, don't read...
Mar 09, 2002 12:38 PM

Do not tell my mom, I do have beer, especially KingFisher Strong. I did have tasted Haywards, Foster's, etc., but KingFisher gives a good kick to your brains. I am not a regular drinker, but whenever time permits, I get hold of a KingFisher. I also have Vodka, only due to its non-smelling feature. But beer is my poison. After all, I am a man.

The time to drink beer, according to me, is when you party in indoors with your friends. Because beer emits foul smell and you do not want to get caught by your parents, it is ideal to sleep there where you had consumed large gallons of beer. Remember, fast drinking of strong beer can lead to vomiting. If you do not vomit, you will piss in large quantities, which is really foul-smelling. Even if you sweat, you will smell really bad and people will know that you have consumed beer. If you smoke with beer, you will get the ultimate kick of your life. If you have whisky after beer and then have vodka, you are surely going down.

And yes, do not drive after drinking. Beer is also alcoholic. Have one beer a week or two, or you will have a large beer belly. Beer includes fats, so it will affect your dieting program. If you drink beer and want to avoid the fat tummy, then do lots of crunches and sit-ups and other abs exercises. I have gone up from 60 kgs to 70 kgs in 2 months straight. And yes, I am doing my sit-ups.

If you want to start drinking beer, then start with Ice Beer or Non-Alcoholic ones, so that you may get adjusted to the taste. At first, you will hate the taste, then you will just love it. Then go on to Mild Beer like Foster's. And if you want to risk it, go on to Strong Kingfisher, my favourite.

Put Temptation To Test
Mar 08, 2002 12:25 PM

I have made it ''my way of Life '' - why don't you make it yours as well ! is what I would like to preach to all those who want the most refreshing drink in a hot and humid afternoon.

Kingfisher is synonomous to Beer and why not ? It has a well balanced taste , is well hopped , has an excellent aroma , is clear and crisp and has the right head to go with it all.

If you want a glass of beer there's no reason why anyone should not opt for Kingfisher.

Banish the memories of over indulgence and rash promises and put temptation to test with KINGFISHER !

The king of beers
Mar 07, 2002 10:12 AM

I buy KF cause its the best indian beer available, and I have been consuming for the last 12yrs. prime reasons are the beer in it self has a very good blend a slight oaky hint, its just right for the indian palate, goes well with our spicy food, its mild and the co has been consistant in its blending over the years.

The only drawback of bottled/canned KF is that the glycerin contents are heavy which has obvious disadvantages, hence draught is best, but there are very few places serving it.

People who like mild and well blended beer should go in for KF, for the tipplers this is not thier ticket for a high.

Beer, by and large is displacement to beverage hence there is no right time to have it, like sparkling vine, table vine or cognac. Ofcourse a hot summer afternoon is the best time to sooth the throat.

Its really the king of good times!
Mar 06, 2002 05:22 PM

Kingfisher beer really delivers what it says. It IS the KING of good times. It has got the exactly right characteristics of a good beer. It is light, non-froth, not too strong and gives refreshing feeling as soon as the first chilled sip goes down your parched throat.

The best of all it does not leave a hangover at all! okay I concede that it depends on how my pegs you konk down but still this one just gives you a good hazy feel rather than a heavy bear head in the morning which puts you in a lousy mood thru out the day.

The strong brand also signifies the quality of the product. with so many spurious stuffs doing the rounds in the market we need to be careful with our fun times.

I would recommend Kingfisher as a moderate drink for occasions when you feel the urge to relax with friends, chill out in the summers....be moderate and enjoy!

Beer of the Patriots
Jan 28, 2002 06:38 AM

I am a person who respects beers. To be able to imbibe and appreciate a beer is a very important quality and I am still working towards attaining a level of expertise in this quality.

However, among the many beers that I have had the pleasure of tasting and appreciating, Kingfisher certainly occupies a high ranking. It is a nice lager with just the right amount of punch to it. It is certainly very tasty and not a head-banger like some of the other Hayward series beers.

Many of the Indian restaurants in USA do serve Kingfisher and when in an Indian restaurant, be a patriot and drink Kingfisher!!!

Kingfisher - The king of beer
Jan 19, 2002 11:50 PM

I like it. Infact I try to avoid any other beer. I do not drink too much of beer to maintain my body weight. But when I am tired after very long fishing session that too in summer, I like to have only Kingfisher.

Flavour is very special. Many a time I get the same test that I enjoyed long back during my college days. Belive me in London I searched for it in 1994 and I got it. Till then I always drink Kingfisher in London. Very unfortunately I could not managed even a bottle in Germany. I do not like German beer. Ofcourse many of German brands are world famous.

I like beer in a big glass ( about 500 ml) and fish fry or roast. Try roast with Kingfisher.

This is one of the reviews written when I was trying to learn the art of writing reviews.

As of today, I write better but I must acknowledge the efforts taken by some members to help me to write better.

This is a very short review with minimum information.

Thanks for reading the review.

Ooh la la la la Ole O!
Dec 23, 2001 11:11 PM

I am an ardent Kingfisher loyalist for many years now. Ok ok! To be frank, this loyalist business is not true! Sometimes, I do go for an occassional Fosters or San Miguel, but honestly, I prefer the King of Good times! I have been around a bit, and I believe that every country's ppl have their own taste of beer. The Africans like it strong, the Germans like it mild. I always felt that Kingfisher is a beer that is suited for the Indian beer freaks. I couldn't care less if it originated from US or UK(I never liked the London BITTER). But I feel that Kingfisher is a beer that knows the taste of the Indian crowd. Its perfect! At least for Indians who are not crazy after strong beers!(Frankly, the strong beers have their own charm, too!) As far as San Miguel is concerned, I had this wierd experience that I could enjoy the first two bottles, and then suddenly lost interest in the third bottle!(Hehe! I drink the least in our group)

But with Kingfisher, you can go on enjoying it till u feel its enough! Truly, a beer that makes u sing ''Ooo la la la la Ole O!''

King of good times
Jul 26, 2001 04:53 PM

This is a beer which has become my favourite when we are having a get together. If there is no vodka, this is what I stick too.

King facts !!!

Kingfisher traces its history back to 1915 when United Breweries was created out of 5 small breweries in South India. The beer was first distributed to customers in Bangalore, Chennai and in the Nilgiris.

In 1980, Kingfisher was the first to launch canned beer and draught beer.

Kingfisher Lager beer was judged to be the world's best lager out of 240 brands at the Stockholm Beer Festival, held at Sweden for two consecutive years ('94 & '95).

Kingfisher also received the Gold Medal for the World Beer Championship held in '97, at Chicago.

This beverage has no fat, is low in Sodium and contains only 280 calories. In comparison, the same amount of Apple juice has 364 calories, Milk - 442 calories and any cola - 299 calories. Well that will not save you from having a beer belly if you consume excess beer. :):)

Kingfisher has its own line of designer casual wear in the world of Indian fashion.

Why Kingfisher ?

Well I like the beer because its light and easy on the Palate and the perfect combination with spicy Indian food like Kababs and Tandoori chicken.

It also goes well with peanut masala (thats a combination of fried peanuts, chopped onions, green chillies, salt and red chilli powder). Or with just simple hot potato chips or Tapioka Chips. You can also throw in some Chicken Liver pepper fry. It tastes heavenly. On a hot summer day one can just chill out with this beer and feel real good.

For that matter this beer can be had at any time of the day without one feeling very heavy and sloshed though there are some people who do get sloshed with the lightest of beer :):).

But for people who do not like very light beers may not have a liking for this brand though it is the largest selling beer brand in India.

This is definitely my type of beer.

The price is also pretty reasonable which makes it possible to have it regularly. Or serve it in a big party. It costs about 50/- odd rupees in Bangalore for the standard Kingfisher bottle.

Did you know ?

Beer is very good for the hair. Washing your hair with beer makes your hair shine with a healthy glow.

You can make soup with beer too.

What you need is 1000 ml beer,2 Tbsp flour,1 Tbsp sugar,1 Tbsp butter,1/2 lemon, including juice and peel cinnamon,1 or 2 eggs.

Brown the flour and sugar in the butter and pour in beer. Add lemon peel, lemon juice and cinnamon and bring to a boil. Quickly stir in eggs. If desired, serve over white bread toast.

Suggestion

For strong beer drinkers, you can try Ice beer which comes in for about 40/- rupees for a small bottle. Thats pretty good for a quick drink too if you want to go for something stronger than Kingfisher.

Well drink up and be merry !!! But be careful. Avoid drinking and driving and keep safe. Drinks are meant to be enjoyed not abused.

Wah ....!! what a beer .
Jun 17, 2001 09:43 PM

I can vouch for Kingfisher and will recommend strongly to my beer drinking fraternity . Yes - my almost 10 yrs of drinking experience and testing all the available bottles of this segment , says so .

This beer is very refreshing at any season and time and damn tasty as well . I enjoy it's smooth rolling down giving a heavenly touch to your tastebuds and one sip ... woops I am ready again . Any body can become highly romantic also after a couple of swigs and walk down the memory lane with a happy smile .

Chiiled for me is like what SOMRAS to the debata and not chilled ..!!ok - no issue in a chilly winter in front of a fire place .

I really love it.

Be Indian, buy Indian
Jun 13, 2001 10:56 AM

I am lucky to have a liquor permit here in UAE and my favourite stores to shop for liquor are Spinneys and Grey Mackenzie. As I am not much into 'hard liquor' except maybe Malibu , Archers Peach Schnapps and Baileys which I feel are worth trying out sipping them with ice cubes in them in small quantities. Let's come to the point now, Beer is my favourite and I have it only on my weekends ( not more than 2 cans). I have tried out Hienekkien, Amstel, Anchor, Fosters etc. But last month I had the oppurtunity to buy a carton of Kingfisher and ever since I go for it as it is ,eventhough a little more stronger than the other beers available here, it tastes better, brings back nostalgic memmories of my College days in India and is a bit cheaper than the Australian or the Dutch counterparts. The packing ,I mean , the cans are attractive and competative, almost on par with the 'Foreign' brands. Kudos to Kingfisher Beer, keep it up!

Wow ! this term will be a slip up,once you take a sip of Kingfisher beer.Infact ,so superb is its taste & afterwards feeling that its quite hard to resist when you happen to stand beside a bottle of Kingfisher.Enriched with a perfect blend of Barley, hop & yeast ,it is sure to cast a sensational spell on those who try it .The post drink slight hangover is also great .Carved out of the purest barleys & with a minimal alcohol content, this lager beer is the ideal one for everyone in all occasions .In my view, parties & get togethers can soar to a great spirit if it includes Kingfisher. This beer is not harmful for the ladies either. It really feels like a man possessed after an evening with kingfisher.Certainly,Kingfisher is the best beer in its class.Have a sip of it & I am sure the evenings will belong to you.gulp.ah!
