Kader Khan--- A Man of many words

I remember watching this actor for the first time in Manmohan Desai's Parvarish(1977).As a kid, I did not know who he was and when I asked my cousin, he replied"Arre woh Amjad khan ka bhai hai".I believed him innocently. The reason why I am narrating this incident is because Kader khan(KK) had effectively left his mark in a minuscule role in this film which had Amjad khan as the main villain in addition to Vinod khanna whose role was also more on the villainish side. Later as I grew up I learnt that KK was the driving force and major component of blockbusters produced by Manmohan desai and Prakash mehra in those days.He used to write equally good for both these directors(who were supposedly rivals).Their rivalry did not affect the quality of KK's work. His dialogues were trend setters in those days.Be it Amar akbar anthony/Parvarish/Chacha bhatija/Khoon pasina/Hera pheri/Muqaddar ka sikandar/Naseeb/Sharabi/Deshpremee/Namak Halaal /Suhaag and innumerable such hits. The man could stand the test of time in those days when Javed Akhtar duo ruled the roost. They demanded handsome amount for their scripts alongside stars like the Big-B.But KK too was a tough competetor and created equally good scripts and dialouges. Both Manmohan desai and Prakash mehra relied on KK's work till the end of their career. One should especially note if KK was not part of the films made by these directors, the films bombed miserably at the box office.Remember.films like Jadugar and Ganga jamuna saraswati etc.He was an accomplished writer who knew his job very well.Even Big B has accepted that dialogues in his films written by KK were rendered by BiG-B in exactly the same way as KK wanted them to be rendered. Before the shoot KK used to physically record all dialogues for Big-B in his(KK's) voice and fill it in an audio cassette and hand it over to Bachchan saab so that the essence of his dialogues was not lost. Next day on the shoot, Big B rendered the dialogues in exactly the same manner. In the later years of his career, KK dedicated himself to reviving the failing career of Jeetendra.Remakes of telugu hits were made in hindi with Jeetendra as the leading man.Suddenly there was anew Type of cinema with smart editing/good dialouges/song nd dance and novel storylines.Examples were Himmatwal/Justice Chowdhury/Tohfa/Jani Dost/Qaidi/Sarfarosh/Maqsad and many more.KK not only wrote dialogues for these movies but also acted in them.Majority of them were major hits at the box office and KK made good money out of these films. Summarising all this, one has to acknowledge kk for his contribution to Indian cinema and to building the careers of various stars.Shakti kapoor too benefitted out of K Ks work and their pairing was unusual and guaranteed box office success. We have heard that KK was an engineer by profession but was actually destined to write and act in indian cinemas. He also directed a muslim social titled'Shama"with Shabana azmi in the lead. The film did not create any waves and KK kept writing. He was the best in this job. Some of his memorable films and my personal favorites are "Coolie"/Sharara(1981)/Jaisi karni waisi bharni/Bulandi(1980)/Qaidi(1983).

In today's cinema we really miss this great writer and effortless actor.

He is the Real Khan to me

For so many years, I have enjoyed this person doing so many different roles as

a middle aged man to that of a old man, a villain to that of God Yama or a faqir/baba, a servant or waiter to that of a businessman, inspector, principal, advocate, .

and he did all of them so well.

Perfect Make Up

Whether he puts on a thin mustache or a thick one or a beard, he does it as perfectly as his acting.

Best Dialogue Writer

He is a great dialogue writer as well(in fact he is the only one I know). His dialogues(whether they were said by any other actor or himself) were crucial in a film's success and used to spellbound the audience and made them think on various social issues.

Big Contribution to Indian Cinema

I don't know about how many awards he got, but having watched so many bollywood movies esp. those released in 1980's and 1990's on tv, I can say this:-

If you delete his dialogues and his acts from those movies, little will be left to be called as entertainment.

I think his contribution to Indian Cinema is no less than the three Khans.

Best Pairing

He paired best with Govinda(try to remember any of Govinda's hit comedies and he will be a part of it usually), Shakti Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Johny Lever.

My Name is Khan,Kader Khan...

Kader Khan is a fine actor. He is also a great writer. He is originally from Afghanistan, he is a Pashtun.

Kader Khan has a diploma in Civil Engineering. He has taught the subject in an engineering college in Mumbai. He started off in Yash Chopra's'Daag' in 1973.He did not have the looks or personality to become a hero.So he became mainly a character artiste. In the eighties & nineties films were written with good roles for character artistes.

Thus we had people like Kader Khan, Asrani, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Anupam Kher & Asrani who got meaty roles in Hindi movies of that era. These days however films revolve around the hero. The thing with Kader Khan was that he could slip into any character with ease. Thus he was the scheming munshi in'Himmatwla', We see him as a sorcerer in'Pataal Bhairavi'.We also see him as the doting father in'Biwi Ho To Aisi'.Indeed he is a genius as he has played a huge variety of important characters with a lot of finesse. He is also a great writer having written the dialogues for many hit films of the eighties & nineties.

He has excellent command over the Urdu language & is in touch with the likes & dislikes of the common film-loving public. This has enabled him to write many hit film dialogues. However as movies became more sophisticated & westernised people like Kader Saab found it difficult to fit in.This and his advancing age is the reason that he is not seen on screen anymore.
