Sci Fi Short Story This is a very terse and tight Science Fiction short story. It would be a crime to giveaway too much but expect a major twist in the tale.
Plot Set at sometime in the future, robots and humans are fighting each other. Amusingly, India and China have collaborated and the US has to fend off the huge numbers of our combined armies. The US has had to release fully automated soldiers. This story is about one soldier who is dodging the massive armies of Indians and Chinese fighters.
Tech Skills Nick Thacker writes a rapid fire style which sucks you into the story without a backward glance. He has effortless mastery over the genre, using weapon jargon and other terminologies with seasoned grace and ease. See below for example.
Snippet from Chapter 1 I pulled the release back on the gun, ejecting the pulse charge magazine and revealing the gaping hole in its top. Under normal circumstances I would have bent down to grab the empty ammunition cartridge and saved it, refilling it back at the station.
A Clip from Chapter 2 The way Thacker spins this vision of the future is masterly!
However, while it couldn't directly harm humans, it could advise its owners -- the NAA government -- how they could harm humans. After the revolt of the European Union over the collapse of the world economy and the clash between the Indian-Chinese Alliance and Russian States over dwindling resources, the Final Wars officially began.
A Peek at Chapter 3 Reading the below passage, you appreciate his command over imaginative writing. It reads like a cool scene from a Tom Cruise film.
"You were hit, heavy arms is almost on us, and we need to get you moved." I saw Jonas' helmet -- still flicked upward and open -- flash with the HUD representation of what Jonas was processing. He was thinking about his injuries, each of his internal components taking a "roll call" and proving the CPU in his head with the results.
A Teasing Nibble This ever so short short story (23 pages) is a marvellous example of great writing.
