Five Best Television Hosts or Personalities Tips

Shut Up!Class in Progress...
May 20, 2009 11:34 AM 4540 Views

I am an uneducated chap.I know almost nothing.Whatever I have learnt is by watching some stimulating TV shows. These fabulous TV hosts have opened up new horizons for millions like myself who are probably perceptive but kind of lack the means. To get formal education that is.But to these amazing men and women who are experts in their fields. They are highly educated, sometimes even Ivy League passouts.

They are good-looking they are articulate. For the most part they are in charge of their subject. They know it threadbare and can and will share the knowledge free with the eager junta. It takes a rare combination of erudition, of clarity and not to forget ready wit to be able to achieve this.So here goes:

1.Anuradha Sengupta(CNBC):The host of Storyboard she probably can disseminate Advertising like no one else.Equally at home talking with local channel heads, market analysts as well as international figures like Sir Martin Sorell.Simplicity is the secret of her astounding success.

2.Prannoy Roy(NDTV):Moderation and precision used to be his watchwords though lately he has been tom-tomming certain untruths.Still, the best speaker by far on television with a great grip on the queen's language.

3.Udayan Mukherjee(CNBC):Whatever little I kinow about the bourses has been learnt by watching his lips move.He seems to have endless knowledge of the stock markets and each lecture brings forth a new aspect.Just too good!

4.Vir Sanghvi(Discovery Travel & Living):He is always conversational whether in print or tv.And never ever at a loss for words. Is a great authority on almost everything including gourmet food.

5.Rajdeep Sardesai(CNN-IBN):Is a highly-educated man.Is still the most rooted of all the others. He never loses sight of the common man's concerns. Is a great authority on the indian psyche.

One and only one is best : Rajdeep Sardesai

I will only write about Rajdeep Sardesai , as he is the best and many notch above other journalists such as Karan thapar, Prannoy Roy, Barkha Dutt etc.

I am very tired and it’s around 12.43 am, and my eyes are fixed on the CNN-IBN channel watching Rajdeep commenting on the Income tax deptt troubling Amitabh Bacchan. My eyes are burning because of lack of sleep due to soccer, India tour of West Indies and of course blogging. I am tired, but I am helpless. I am helpless because I just can’t stop myself writing about the fiery and the most talented of the lot of Indian journalists, Rajdeep Sardesai.

I am sure all those who have watched Rajdeep, must be highly impressed with him. And, for all those who are missing this action, stay away from home land, Rajdeep is the chief editor of CNN-IBN channel and presently the best Indian TV journalist. Before joining CNN-IBN which is a joint venture between CNN and TV 18, he was hosting one of the most popular programmes of NDTV, “The Big Fight” and was equally impressive in that.

I hail from an economically backward but politically motivated state of India, and I remember watching Rajdeep during the Mandal and Kamandal (Ram Janmbhoomi) era. He was first seen on T.V, covering the Advani Rath Yatra and then the subsequent elections together with Pranoy Roy. I remember him as an average journalist at that point of time, and was more impressed with other journalists such as Pranoy Roy and Vinod Dua. But with the passage of time and wisdom of grey hair, he has become an ace journalist who has got a dynamic screen presence on the T.V medium. His choice of frequent phrases like; somewhere down the line, fair enough etc. keeps the viewers under a tight control and makes them guessing , that he is going to come up with some real exciting and valid argument. His choice of words, catching the politicians and the guilty on the wrong foot, passing witty remarks, believing in journalism with valid arguments rather than creating noises and scandals makes him the current face of emphatic and matured Indian journalism.

He is witty, has got a band of young vibrant team who seems like are following Rajdeep footsteps and all this makes a pleasure to watch the CNN-IBN news which is significantly different from other Indian news channels such as Star News, Zee News, NDTV etc.

Looking in his past, Rajdeep is the son of the former Indian Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai and Nandini Sardesai, an activist in Mumbai and head of the Dept of Sociology, St Xavier's College; He attended the Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai, St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He also worked for the Times of India in various positions before joining television.

All those people , who want to read Rajdeep’s column , can visit the CNN-IBN blog on:

I thought and thought what next I can write on. I do not listen to music so the option on writing on music albums, best songs etc is not available for me. I haven?t watched any new/old films so that makes the movies review option null?I better stop beating around the bushes and come to the point?the only thing I do everyday is watch TV?so why not write something about it then?so here I am?raking my brain to list down the 10 best hosts/anchor or personalities on TV( n not 5)?you all are free to disagree, debate or support me on whomsoever you wish to?

To begin with, I would only be focusing on the Indian Television Industry as it is growing each day by leaps and bounds... Nowadays, it is not difficult to be on TV? if you have a phone (a mobile phone preferable to send all those sms?s), internet connection, some money and a little/no talent?you can dream of becoming a TV star?acting is no big deal when it comes to TV as we see hoards of young aspirants being shoved in and out each day?but even in these mad race?there are some genuinely good TV stars who are their because of their sheer talent?and my review desires to bring them to the limelight ( like if they didn?t have any!!! )

  1. Vir Sanghvi ? He is one of the best in the business?both on TV and on the print media? He is the editor of the Hindustan Times (Delhi) and his articles are a delight to read? Similarly his interviews and shows on TV are informative, interactive and a pleasure to watch. He has a great command on the English language and the only time he gave a show in Hindi?it was a disaster?nevertheless he is one of the respected lots in the business?

  2. Barkha Dutt - A lady who has carved a niche in whatever she did?be it news anchoring from the cozy air conditioned sets in Delhi to the dimly lit bunkers in Kargil?you can?t have another Barkha?she is too good when it comes to news anchoring?the respect and accolades are all well deserved?NDTV will be lost without her?n she is tough gun with a heart which is humane?never shows her biasness or emotions on screen?and has worked her way to all the inner secrets of the major political parties?which is tough by any standards?

  3. Rajdeep Sardesai - With his ruffled hair look, he is the best political analyst and anchor you can get on TV?for once, I will show my personal biasness towards this man?( I have a big time crush on him )?he was the right hand of Prannoy and gave NDTV the start it wanted?his shows were always well rated and he was the best?interviewees had a tough time with him as he didn?t give them a leeway?the elections are always so much more fun and informative with him?the respect, the admiration is evident from the amount of awards he managed to get as a news anchor and the media coverage he got when he quit NDTV?a journalist still belonging to the old school?sting journalism is a no for him?

  4. Karan Thapar - He is a veteran on TV?with his endless shows, interviews and articles ?he is never out of news?with his impeccable style of interviewing, you can just pity the poor interviewee?he doesn?t grill them fast n quick?it is a slow painful process many a times?n who can forget his ?the famous tie? which he got as a gift from our mushy dear (I mean Musharraf for the uninitiated)?he was all in the news?yet again!!!

  5. Roshan Abbas - He has had a successful stint on the small screen?I don?t know if most of you know him or seen his shows?he is a good theatre actor and has a good experience while hosting game shows and some interviews as well?one of the few people who is good in both English and Hindi?a well read person who has a good screen presence?

  6. Shekhar Suman - You can?t ignore this man?with his humor, punch lines and continual shows?he is a name to reckon with?personally I prefer him for talk shows and as a stand up host?his serials were good, different and worked well with the masses?excellence in Hindi and English is his biggest asset and the ?I don?t care?attitude gives him an extra edge?.ripped apart quite a few of the biggies on his shows?a great watch, anytime!

  7. Cyrus Broacha - Now who hasn?t seen him or heard him?he is by far the best on his channel?his jokes are not below the belt, sometimes difficult to comprehend but most of the time funny?his wit is now and then subtle & on the face? a distinctive brand of humor?as an anchor, he does his job well?interaction with people on the day to day basis makes him more normal or abnormal?your take! ? a good time pass always?n he makes sense as well?irrepressible sometimes?

  8. Sajid Khan - His comic timing is good?I was not a keen watcher of his shows earlier but now I am?he leaves no stones unturned to dismantle the top notches of the Indian film industry and does a good job too?he has no fineness in one language and his weapon is the ?aam junta?talks he does?he can carry of a stand up act pretty well but no acting please?a person who has managed to prove his mettle?finally?

  9. Derek O brian - If u watch a quiz show, chances are you will see him hosting it?he has an inherent sense of charm that excludes on screen every time he speaks?an excellent orator with dollops of intelligence?no wonder he is the best in quiz show hosting?suave is thy name?

  10. Amitabh Bachchan- I couldn?t have let him go?nope?he revolutionized Indian television?what can I say about an icon?the warmth, the love and genuine exhilaration that contestants show when they meet him?says it all?a person who has touched the skies but his feet are firmly on ground?a show host, a quiz master, a great actor?done everything with élan and proved the critics wrong?every time?

Now that is a list that may raise quite a few brows or admirations?both are welcome?to add more fun to it?I will ask for some favor as well?those of you who read the entire stuff and even manage to reach the comments section?do rate the listed people on some of these points?out of 10 please!!!

  1. Screen Presence

  2. Dressing Style

  3. Command on language( English/Hindi or both)

  4. Confidence Quotient

  5. Worth a watch again

Thanks in advance!

Pah...

Tuesday morning blahs. A bird has built its nest in my air conditioner and I cant turn it on, a bunch of monkeys are aping around on the tree outside my office room and some bees have been staring at me for the last 10 minutes...

Tuesdays reek...

I'm going to pick only Indians on this one... and I'm picking just Four... with a special mention for the fifth...

Four Best Television Hosts/Personalities

----------------------------------------------------------------------

In no particular order....

Harsha Bhogle: The man with that infectious smile. He started off as a radio commentator and made it all the way to the top in sports journalism. As a cricket commentator he's sharp and lends that much needed touch of professionalism and vibrance. He's the balancing factor between a Navjot Singh Sidhu and a Geoff Boycott.

Harsha Bhogle has hosted cricket talk shows as well Stumped, the school level sports quiz show. Yup, he deserves to be one of the five best.

Barkha Dutt: This woman is nothing short of INCREDIBLE. She is the one journalist that everyone aspires to be like. She attained fame during the Kargil war for her fearless reporting. She has interviewed a slew of personalities covering a wide range such as politics, entertainment etc.

The woman has an aura. She knows her job better than anyone else. And she commands RESPECT - from EVERYONE!

Siddarth Basu: The Numero Uno Quizmaster! He's been asking those questions for many a year and he's been asking them in style. He has done quiz and game shows for channels ranging from Doordarshan to BBC. No questions locked but you better be sharp during the buzzer round...

drum roll...

Amitabh Bachchan: I was contemplating on excluding his name from this list mainly because of the man's persona but KBC2 is back and he's back to kicking the backsides of every other show and TV personality... so... Amitabh Bachchan!

Nothing to say about the man... that hasnt already been said.

Dedicated to the friendly folks in the comments section:

  • Prannoy Roy - the NDTV head honcho. Probably the best political analyst and election anchor in the country.

  • Derek O'Brien - the Bournvita Quiz Contest quizmaster.

  • Cyrus Broacha - the spaced out one man mayhem machine.

Special mention: Diana Hayden does a sweet job on History Channel's Biography. Standing ovation for Diana...

I have avoided Karan Johar and Simi Garewal because their shows are too sugary and pretentious... too much vitriol too...

Got some name you want to add? Thats what the comment section is there for :)

Phew... the bees have left... I know what you guys have to say ''Please go and watch more TV!''

~finis~

The booby prize goes to Navjot Sidhu for dominating everyone and not letting anyone get a say... bad sidhu... very bad...
