Destiny Farmstay, Nilgiris Reviews

Bangalore, India India
Beautiful location- pathetic service
Sep 25, 2017 02:16 PM 1482 Views

We had booked Destiny Farm Stay from Little Earth group for a 2-night weekday package from 18th-20th September 2017.As an add on we also booked 1 night at their Bandipur property Mangifera for 20th September 2017.

We arrived in Ooty town on 17th evening and stayed ther1.16e for a night thinking that we would go to Destiny the next morning and reach early to enjoy all the activities offered in their package. It was raining and very windy in Ooty and we hoped for better weather.

On 18th morning we got a call from the Destiny front office staff-Mahalakshmi to check our arrival time as well as give us directions to get to the property. We informed her that we were already in Ooty and would be arriving by 12.30 at their parking. We left from Ooty around 10.45 after breakfast. Around 11.15am we got a call from Rajesh from the Little Earth central reservation Team. He wanted to inform us that it was raining and very windy In Destiny and we could change our booking to one of their 2 properties in Ooty town if we wanted. When we declined, he advised us to carry warm clothes.

The Package in their Ooty town hotels was INR 5500 less than the Destiny package and didn’t include any activities. No compensation or refund for the extra amount was offered.

We arrived at the parking lot- the last 500metres of drive was on a path which was only rocks and cannot be called a road- ideally, they should have picked us much before that place as no car can go up that road without damage, unless it’s a four-wheel drive jeep- in fact our car did get damaged. We drove a VW Polo. Anyway, we were picked up from the parking lot and taken to the resort in their truck which was like an Army Canter/Truck.

Mahalakshmi helped with the check in formalities and showed us to our room, after giving us a long list of available activities and explaining our package. The room was very good and so was the location and ambience of the resort.

After lunch(we had brought it along, not being sure of the time of pick up) I took my daughter for Glass painting as it was raining and windy. As horse riding was scheduled for 4.30 pm and I wasn’t too keen on the cattle farm and Agri farm visit in the rain(never happened anyways) I decided to go for my complimentary foot massage- The massage was decent- I would rate it 7 on 10.

When I went to check for horse riding at 4.30 there was no one at the location and no information about the same. It was drizzling, so I went to the reception to check about the same. When I told Mahalakshmi that there was no one there she said maybe it was because of the rain as the horses are not taken out in the rain. Fair enough! She said I could take my daughter for the Cow milking at 5.30pm. So, I went back to my room and waited. At 5.15 we walked in the drizzle towards the dairy farm and on the way, we saw the stable manager who offered to show us the horses. We saw 4 horses and by then it had stopped raining but was still windy.

We went to the dairy farm and there was no one there. We went back to the stable and the manager came with us to the dairy farm and showed us the cows but informed us that they had already been milked. We walked back with him and on the way, he told us that if the weather was windy like it was then it was fine and they could do the horse riding, but he never offered to take us riding then,

From now on nothing went as per their activity schedule. The hot water which was supposed to be available between 6-10pm was lukewarm(we can drink hotter water) We didn’t complain as we considered the bad weather. Karaoke was to take place between 6-7 pm- didn’t happen, Campfire- and fun games-7.30pm- didn’t happen. The front office had informed me when I enquired that in case of rain they would light a fire in the lobby area instead of outdoors.

Dinner- Chicken 65- pathetic- it was anything but chicken 65- some pieces of chicken dipped in some tasteless cornflour paste and fried. The dal and phulkas were ok. We went to bed disappointed after washing up with the lukewarm water, praying for good weather the next day.

When I woke up the next morning it was not raining though still quite windy. At 7.30am I called the front office to check about the horse riding and morning trek scheduled for the morning. Was told that they would check with the stable manager and call back. When I didn’t hear back from them till 7.45 I called them again only to be told that the person who had gone to check had not returned. Waited till 8am and called again. By now I had lost it. They said they were still waiting, and I said that I could walk faster. Then I was put on hold and someone else got on line to say that horse riding was not happening as it was too windy.

I went to the reception and told them that I wanted to cancel my package and wanted a full refund. They had used rain as an excuse the previous day and today it was not raining but they still had excuses. The stable manager that specifically told us that as long as it was not raining and just windy the horses could be ridden.

They said they would have to wait till 9am to talk to the management and get back to me. I said I wanted to talk to the Management, Went back to my room- no hot water as usual. The trek guide came to my room to offer to take me on the trek- I said the trek time was 7.30 and not 8.30 and now I was going for breakfast as I had a small child who needed to be fed. Also told him about the hot water problem and he sent someone from the house keeping department who came an checked – then went out and came back in 5 minutes and voila- suddenly there was boiling hot water. When I asked him what the issue was – he said that since only 1 room was occupied in our block the valve had been turned off to very low pressure and that he had opened it fully now- Can you imagine how angry I was!

I went back to the front office to blast them- why take bookings and offer packages if they can’t deliver or rather don’t want to deliver because of low occupancy. They should close the resort for the monsoon like some others do. They called their main office and connected me to the girl- Nancy who had made my booking. She connected me to Rajesh-(same guy who had tried to get me to change the booking to their OOty town hotel) I asked him for a full refund and he said he needed half an hour to check with the management and get back to me.

We went for breakfast which was ala carte- no buffet as only 3 rooms were occupied apparently. The breakfast quality was mediocre- sambar was neither dal nor sambar something in between. Chutney was pathetic and so was the dosa. As for the tea- well I couldn’t believe we were in the Nilgiri hills drinking such sad tea. After breakfast, suddenly everyone started coming to our room- The executive chef, the stable manager, the trek guide and also the front office manager. All of them were extremely apologetic and trying to pacify me and were offering all the activities at my convenience. I said I would first talk to the management as I had had enough of their excuses about the weather and staff being on leave etc.

Finally spoke to the GM of Little Earth group who directly refused to give any refund and said that we should give him a chance to make it up to us – offered a room upgrade- all activities according to our convenience and also complimentary full body massage. Since we had no option we had to agree. Suddenly everything changed- we were called for every activity- taken fishing.(because of us the other guests got to do it too). Then we were shown the Deluxe and Superior rooms and asked to choose which we wanted- my daughter was offered the painting and other indoor activities unlimited number of times. The Executive Chef came to our room personally to ask us what and how we wanted our lunch cooked. We were given complimentary desserts to make up for the previous night’s bad dinner. We were given finger bowls and mouth fresher after the meal as opposed to the previous night when we had to go outside to the washroom in the rain.

Horse riding arranged only for us, visit to the stable and feeding the horses for my daughter- walk to the stream. The front office girl offered to baby sit my daughter while my husband and I went for our complimentary massages. We were asked if we required extra water bottles, towels- you name it!

If only all this was done from the beginning without us having to fight for it. We had paid for a package and expected them to arrange everything accordingly. I had even asked for a room upgrade when we checked in telling the staff that it was done in many hotels when occupancy was low(we were the only ones when we checked in and had a small child with us- they could have offered us a room with a heater but they didn’t in spite of the weather)

I don’t understand why we had to fight for what we actually deserved and paid for. Yes the weather was bad- they couldn’t control it- but they could have worked around it and arranged whatever possible activities during the gaps in between when the rain stopped. As for the indoor activities- I don’t see why they couldn’t be arranged! It was just sheer laziness on the part of the staff who had a readymade excuse of the weather to not do anything especially because of low occupancy- just 1 room occupied in the afternoon and 2 more check ins by 7pm. This was totally unexpected from the Little Earth group who are now resting on their past laurels and the advantage of the beautiful location. The MD’s response in all this was only to offer a room upgrade and some complimentary spa treatment.

Anyways Day 2 was better also because it didn’t rain much and the weather was better. We checked out on 20th( not before fighting with the manager for billing us for the so called complimentary massages offered by the GM- which they finally deducted from the bill)and headed to their Bandipur property- Mangifera- this was a complete let down- it was like a regular farm house taken over from some locals and the rooms were revamped and a swimming pool was made in the centre. Definitely not worth even the discounted rate of 3975/night- no air conditioning in the rooms- the fan was far away from the bed and it got really hot at night when the power failed twice and the babk up took too long to come on.

The pool was dirty and only cleaned after we told them that we would be using it. The lunch was decent- no menu- just a 4-course meal. The dinner was pathetic- first of all it was sent 30 minutes late(they forced us to have it in our room citing mosquito problem at the restaurant. When it finally arrived the aloo mattar was raw. The gravy was the same for both egg curry and aloo mattar and that too the same as the chicken curry from lunch. We sent the food back and ate some of our own snacks and went to bed as my daughter was hungry and sleepy and couldn’t wait another hour for fresh food to be cooked.

They did send a replacement dal after 30 minutes which we didn’t even touch and this was made into sambar for breakfast the next morning.

When we checked out from here I refused to pay for the dinner and was asked to pay for the room though I had already paid for it 10 days before. When I asked the reservations for the confirmation voucher I was informed that since their MD was traveling he had not checked and confirmed whether my payment had come in but my room was confirmed.

Finally they called and got the confirmation that I had already paid for the room. I heaved a sigh of relief and left the place.

All I can say is- when you charge like a 3-4-star property then you should give the same kind of service. If you want to manage the place like a family run farm then you charge at that level. Yes, the Destiny property was beautiful and although the service didn’t live up to the amount charged at least the location was worth it. But Mangifera was not worth the location, the service, the food- Nothing!

Excellent place to stay

By: Travopia| Apr 03, 2012

Destiny Farm Stay is 3 kms away from Destiny Parking Lot. The road is so bumpy that cars will not pass through. So, they take guests in a closed army truck(modified with seats inside). The adventure starts here. You will literally move all 360 degrees, trust me:) Kids will love this 3 kms of drive in army truck at 10 kmph.

Once you reach Destiny Farm Stay, you will be welcomed with a drink and at least 5 people to welcome you and take care of your luggages. There are 3 variants of room - Standard, Deluxe and Luxury. I would strongly recommend to take either Deluxe or Luxury rooms. Picture below is a luxury room that has HUGE balcony. Every room is named after a book, you will see the book and the author's picture in your room. Luxury room has a fire place, you should experience this at night, just too good to experience it.

I have written a detailed review along with pictures at: https://travopia.com/2012/04/destiny-farm-stay-avalanche-ooty.html

Destiny was an awesome discovery.Definitely didn't know India has some untouched areas still left.It is serene and beautiful and relaxing.A great spot for inner healing and meditation.A time to be one with nature."Rustic farm world charm" if you could use such a term.

It is definitely not for the restless. One must be relaxed and not demanding in order to enjoy such surroundings.Go with the flow would be the apt term to use.Time sort of stands still......

It definitely is a must try for a person who appreciates nature and who is not too obsessed with the modern world. Not for the soft and faint hearted!!!!!

The outdoor activities are quite vast and varied.Caters to a wide spectrum of interests.Horse riding, valley crossing, rock climbing to name a few of the activities. The farm tour is educational too.

The evening bonfires are romantic to say the least. The rooms have such fabulous views of the hills and the water that one can sit out in the balcony for hours.Reading is ideal too.The nights bring out the stars and boy are there millions of them.

Amazing Place
Oct 13, 2009 03:37 PM 4335 Views

We visited Destiny in the first week of Oct and found the place to be amazing. The drive up there is pretty bumpy and we were wondering what we were in for during the 10 minute drive from the parking lot to the farm. However when we got our first glimpse of Destiny , we were awestruck by the beauty of the place.

All the rooms face the lake with mountains all around. One can just sit in the balcony of the room for hours and see the beautiful setting but of course we did not as there was so much for us to do. The early morning trek is not to be missed as you can cover all the lakes in the area.

We also enjoyed the fishing (my wife cought a big one but I was not so lucky (: ) as well as the evening bonfire and barbeque. On the second day that we were there the staff conducted some fun games and we really enjoyed mixing with all the other guests over a friendly game of football. We also tried Valley crossing which was very exciting

The staff were very friendly and made sure that we had a good time. Food was good. There was a good mix of Indain , Chinese and continental dishes. We gave a suggestion that they could introduce more farm grown vegetables as they look so fresh in the fields

We found this to be a very different experience from the usual resort. Very special and enjoyable .We do recommended this place for an unusual and great holiday

Destiny is HELL in the heaven surrounding it
Sep 25, 2009 10:38 AM 5801 Views

I would start by saying HORRIBLE SERVICE and ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMER CARE.

The reason why we went there in August 2009 was because last year in Oct 2009, a large group of my friends had a corporate outbound visit to this place, and they were extremely ecstatic, because of the activities that they were able to carry out there with an outsourced trainer.

Well, we reached Ooty by bus at around 6 am in the morning, We were told by the owner of the property that we need to come on our own till KingsCliff resort, one of their properties in Ooty, and from there, they will provide us a drop till Destiny. We were promised the drop at 8 and it takes well above 1 hr to reach Destiny from that place.

We were in KingsCliff at 6:30 and waited it to be 8 or so for the cab to arrive. When it didn’t arrive till 8:35, we called up the owner Meetha and she talked to us with such a ignorant attitude and said – “how does it matter, its only a few minutes late. It will be there by 8:45 as we thought you are going to have breakfast in KingsCliff”, which we never told them and they assumed everything.

We reached Destiny and the part of journey was covered in an Innova and last couple of kilometers in a military truck. As soon as we landed Destiny, no doubt location was heavenly, but we faced a cyclone. We got down and asked other people about the weather and they told that they have been facing similar weather since yesterday. We reached to the manager there named Molly, to ask her if the weather has been like this since yesterday with a warning of cyclone, then they could have informed us and we could have probably postponed the trip. She told that the weather is like this since last few hours and she called up another manager there Christine and asked us if we want to stay here or not. If we wish, we can leave asap. WE were also made to sign a disclaimer which mentioned that the reort wouldn’t be responsible if we get hurt or even die doing any activity there(remember its an activity resort), and we also didn’t even see remotest sign of medical care there. What the HELL is this for a hospitality that you receive in a star resort?

We have been travelling 320+ kms to come there to a star activity resort, just to receive such inhospitality from the staff and the owner herself.

We decided to stay hoping that the weather might clear in a few hours and we could enjoy some of the activities there. We got fresh, had tea and then a mediocre lunch. We then tried to go on a small trek with the guide, who was very helpful and understanding.

It was really very cold with strong cyclonic winds all over, and we requested tea from them, which they served cold. Along with the tea, they didn’t serve anything hot, and gave us stale bread sandwich(which included side bread pieces, which we throw away to dogs at home), with a few milligrams of butter in it and one piece of cucumber and tomato. The staff was very rude and didn’t know what to talk. Every time we had to call Molly to have a look and she herself was very irritated as if we were asking everything for free. Another family with us there had a small kid and wanted some hot milk with Bournvita. The staff told that the glass of milk is complimentary but if we put a spoon of Bournvita in it, you will be charged Rs 50…….wow…

By the time it was evening 5 pm, we were very frustrated with the service and decided to talk to the owner Meetha Prabhu. She didn’t pick our call from the cell number she now knew was ours. Then we had to use another cell number and she picked instantly.

We had a ling 25 min chat with her over the phone complaining about the discomfort we were facing, and she kept on yelling to support the staff for the whole time. She herself admitted the staff isn’t well trained. At about 6, she asked us to leave. We got all the more furious over this – remote location in hills, with cyclonic weather, cold, families with kids, and it’s almost dark. We told her that our group had visited this place last year and they were treated well because it was the matter of a huge sum of around 1.5 lakhs, but now we will make sure that we don’t come back here and also whoever we know, never comes over here. Then she said, ok tell me WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE YOUR STAY HAPPY. What sense does it make after such an attitude?

We demanded full refund of our advance we had already paid, and a drop to the hotel of our choice in Ooty, which she agreed to, may be after the fear of badmouthing.

We were dropped to a hotel at about 8:45 pm at night.

So guys, if you plan to visit there, make sure you are in a group of atleast 4-5, otherwise they will do whatever they wish to and make your visit more horrible. The scenery around is no doubt very pleasant, but it’s all the horrible service that they provide, made our stay there almost horrible(we managed to have some good time the next day in Ooty city)

We will never wish to go to Destiny again, as such a horrible attitude, and inhospitality isn’t expected after paying so much for a star resort, on a holiday, which we were supposed to relax on.

MOST PATHETIC RESORT AND SERVICE YOU EVER FACE. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED.

Do make sure this is in YOUR Destiny

“I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be.”

'Destiny' is a Farm Stay Concept created by Little Earth Group who also own/run other properties near Ooty. Destiny is unique amongst them. Primarily because it is hidden or far away from the Town and the 'Approach Road'(eh.What Road?) is inside a Forest where all Vehicles are not permitted.

They have a Parking Bay from where you may park your vehicle & a WW2 Military Truck takes you to the Farm. There is no road nor is there any chance of getting one in the next thousand years. It's a dirt track. This guy moves at a Max speed of 10 KM P/H & By the time you reach the Farm Shaking and Twirling inside this machine.

You are suddenly in Form for the Farm Experience as your Marbles are stuck in between your Vocal Cords and you are despo to get off the truck & fall on the grass. If you are an outdoor person this holiday is just for you ! If you are an indoor person you can have fun watching the outdoor guys.I'm Kidding, on the contrary your stay here will transform into an outdoor person.

Thus having kickstarted your adventure, Team Destiny will ensure to get your mind off everything that would normally bother you in your daily life and give you a pleasurable, adventourous and a different holiday. The fragrance and memories of which will linger on for a long time. After the customery welcome you are ushered into your room. Each of the rooms are named after the Cowboys of Wild West like Butch Cassidy, Jesse James, Buffalo Bill and so on.The rooms are small and compact. The Bathrooms are fresh & clean (Normally the first thing some of us would check ! ).

There are activities that can keep you busy during the day. Fishing, Trekking and Rappling for instance, of course not necessarily in the same order and also on the same day, can pep up your mood.Since Destiny is a farm stay concept they also have a Cow Barn, Horses and Rabbits not big but just enough for your little one's to see and enjoy.Evenings are for Strolls and Horse riding while clouds roll on the hills near by.Kids can enjoy a game of Table Tennis or some out door games. The Kitchen works overtime and delivers a decent buffet spread everyday. They take pains not to repeat the menu and ensure variety. The late evening Bonfires with Nick Nacks & a Patialas are a big hit. They even have a Dance Room although they prefer to call it a Discotheque.

Sounds Good. I thik you have almost made up your mind to go there, But Hello - THERE IS NO TV.So, No Saas Bahu or Jetha Laal for you here.YOUR CELL PHONE MAY NOT WORK HERE.So your Mom can't call you here. But Is'nt it something you always wanted to get away from ? (Any ways serials are re-telecast and your Mom will still tell you what she wanted to tell you once you reach home).

It would be rather unfair on my part to end this monologue without giving credit where it is due- to the Team which takes so much pain to make your stay comfy, that is, to The Boys mostly from Darjiling side, who are very committed and are very courteous and understanding.Ramesh, Vishal and others do a great job and so does the Manager & the front office....Cheers.

Amazing is not the word!!

Sometimes I wonder, how creative and enterprising some people are and why don;t everyone thinks like that? This place I found out on the net- very few web sites talk about this - visit little https://littlearth.in

I have my daughter 3.5 years old and if I wished to show her what is nature and what all we have seen in our lives in childhood, there cannot be a better place than this. She practically saw Old McDonald’s farm which she has been mugging up for last 6 months. All the parents of a toddler might have understood what I meant.

I saw many honeymooners, young couples, old couples relaxing and enjoying the calm, pleasant beauty of the place. Coming back to actual- this place is 27 KM from Ooty on the way to a valley where 2-3 dams are there- Avalanchi, Emerald & one more..I forgot the name ;-)

This place has 3 start luxury rooms, decent service, good buffet breakfast, lunch, dinner. This place is very remote, no roads. You will have to park your car in their parking and they use their own junk vehicles to take you to their facility but it is fun. Entire facility is facing a valley, it has a farm house which has 5-6 real real good quality horses, 20-30 jersey cows and breeding center, couple of sheep, lot of hen/chickens, rabbits, geese - your kid would just love it. Entire facility is without any civilization, secured by electrified fence (as written there, I don;t believe).

For a normal room package, I paid Rs 2400 per head per night. Bit on the higher side but justifies the fun. There are costlier package than this too ( probably a fireplace inside the room). One needs to follow driving direction really well. You should ask for Avalanchi road from Ooty. I made mistake there, despite being cautious about driving directions. Their vehicle was ready for us as we called them up after reaching ooty. it take 45-60 mins to reach there from Ooty. As already explained, facility was good.

Normal activities which you can enjoy with your kid are - horse riding, fishing, horticulture visit, calf feeding time, horse bathing, geese pond etc. You can see strawberry plantation, carrots, cabbage, fresh taken out from the farm for you. Young couples can enjoy scenic beauty, pleasant cold place, bonfire, dance floor in the evening, and soothing warm rooms ;-)

There are bunch of adventure activities also conducted by them are paid and my personal opinion is - this place might turn out to be costly if one opts for that. Like, Valley crossing using a rope- Rs. 500, trekking 500, jeep safari- 1800, night camping 1800 etc etc.

Helpers are good natured. Few things one needs to be cautious: Mobile signals are very weak. You need to go to a hill (within facility) to talk. If you want to get dropped to their own parking lot (1.5 KM away), they charge you 500 bucks- most ridiculous thing I found. Don;t go to visit Ooty's traditional tourist spots, it is waste- better stay in such outskirts.

PREGNENT LADIES, PEOPLE WITH SPONDLYTIS, BACK PROBLEM, INJURIES MUST MUST MUST NOT TAKE THE RIDE FROM PARKING LOT TO THE FACILITY. IT CAN BE DANGEROUS. They can walk but again they should not reach there while it is evening/night or raining.

Other than that it can be a very good weekend destination for people in Chennai and Bangalore. Specially those who want to show their kids- what is nature!! I wish if somebody could have thought about similar place near Bangalore.

Hidden Heaven in Nilgiris

Destiny farmstay belongs to The Little Earth Group, the same group which owns the Kings Cliff and Sherlock’s End in Ooty. The unique concept, the picturesque landscape, the luxurious rooms, the great food and service makes Destiny an ideal weekend getaway.

Destiny is located in the outskirts of Ooty in a place called Avalanche or Avalanchi, as known by the locals. Ooty is a very popular tourist destination and thus has become way too commercialized, but Avalanche which is approximately 28 kilometres off Ooty is almost untouched. After arriving in Ooty you can take a cab from Kings Cliff to Avalanche. The last two kilometres stretch to Destiny is perhaps the most exciting part of the journey, because that is where you have to leave the cab and take a truck. There is no proper road, thus only trucks or heavy 4WD would make the last 2km drive. For those 20 minutes on the dirt road, there is only one thought that strikes your mind “how did they manage to build the farmstay here?” In fact it took the management four years to build the farmstay, and they are still not finished.

Destiny FarmStay is situated right beside the Avalanche Lake and is spread over almost an entire hill. The landscaping has been done beautifully and they have for most parts let nature work its magic. The main two blocks in Destiny consists of 18 rooms and a dining cum living room. The rest of the area consists of acres of vegetable farm, stables, geese pond and some areas are left untouched for guests to explore. Owing to its spectacular location, the entire area is so serene that the management has kept telephones and televisions out of the rooms. There is a possibility that you might not even have cell phone reception here.

The rooms here are named after the robbers in the West, such as Jesse James, Buffalo and Bill. The rooms are nothing like the rustic outdoors, they are very plush and luxurious. Destiny offers buffet breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner to its guests. The food is mostly Indian, if you want something specially cooked that is not in the buffet, then that can be arranged too, of course at an extra cost. As of August 2007, the bar in Destiny was being constructed, but one can always carry their own liquor.

Go for a trek in the virgin woods, try your hands in fishing, take a horse ride or an agricultural tour. Just pack some food and drinks and hike to the untouched meadows near the lake and feast your eyes on the panoramic view. Take a stroll in the huge campus of Destiny, which is safeguarded with electrical fencing because the place is home to many wild animals, including leopards. The staff in Destiny arranges for a barbeque and bonfire in the evenings.

Destiny farmstay charges approximately Rs 1500-2000 per day, per person, depending on the season. October to April is peak season. The price includes the stay and all meals.

If you want to catch the glimpse of any animal, then winters(Oct-Jan) is the best time to visit Destiny. However, I feel Destiny is an ideal weekend getaway anytime of the year. Although it is very close to Ooty, Destiny is a piece of paradise hidden in the Nilgiris.
