I like to use schezwan sauce a lot, for 1 big reason, it has loads of garlic that kills icky bugs and has the reputation of being god's own medicine along with ginger root.
Garlic improves blood circulation, counters bad cholesterol and reduces the risk of blood pressure and heart disease and as I said kills pathogens, bacteria and viruses . Studies even link it up with better sexual performance in men .
The ginger+garlic duo augment hunger and aids digestion .
Among natural anti-biotics, I can immediately think of ginger, garlic, turmeric and cayenne pepper . Some of them are anti-inflammatory too eg, ginger and turmeric, I am not sure about garlic and cayenne pepper in that aspect .
According to Andrew Weil, M.D. Indians have the lowest instances of Alzheimer's disease in the world, and it can be attributed to the consumption of high concentrations of turmeric by Indians in their food .
The Del monte sauce was something that I Brought only for the sake of reviewing the product as no one had till date done it.
Well I was unpleasantly surprised . The product had the wrong consistency, was too runny actually, had too much sodium and was low on the hot, spicy, pungent feeling I get from garlic, the ginger flavour was completely missing .
On checking the very small lettered ingredients list, after I needed to procure my reading glasses.as the print is too fine on this 190g bottle, my suspicion was right, no ginger used at all, plus onion and garlic used only as powders in chilli sauce .
I sorely missed the minutely chopped garlic and ginger pieces, that I so much like, they also ensure a thick consistency, which was missing here .
The flavor was of red paprika, weak garlic component and the taste is dominated by too much sodium and even the sour component seemed overdone while the color is too intense, no idea why, maybe some colorants were used.
The sweet component from sugar was also completely missing, the extra spiciness and sourness needs to be countered with very little sugar and that's how schezwan sauces are made . I also found that this one from Del Monte used lesser oil, it's important to use enough oil as its acts like a preservative just as in pickles .
This 190g bottles sells at an MRP of Rs 45, though I paid just Rs 40 when I got it off D'Mart Store.
The verdict then is very clear- The flavours are all out of whack, ginger was not used at all and onion and garlic have been used as powders . The sauce is too runny or watery and feels more like red chilli sauce . I think its a very ordinary product that will never get my nod again and I will stick to its counterpart, closest cousin or rival - Chings Schezwan Sauce .
But this sauce is no good stand alone as a saucy condiment or for indo -chinese recipes as an add-on.
