D-Link Internal Modem Reviews

Motorola sm-56k internal modem(D-Link)
Dec 12, 2004 12:14 PM

Hello Friends!!

When did you last have an uninterrupted, stable internet connection, the chances are you might not be able to recall, don't lose heart. I will provide you with some of the coolest ways to tweak your modem for optimal performance.

Firstly, it is important that you check the modem chipset.

some of the common chipsets are the following

1)Motorola SM56

2)HSP

3)Lucent modem chipset

I am giving details only about the motorola modem for now.

1)Motorola sm56

The motorola sm 56 chipset is the most popular chipset.

Here are few init strings that you could try

The Motorolla SM56 Modem also has problems while trying to connect to a dialup server. It disconnects shortly after establishing a connection. Here are a few init strings to try:

+ms=v34 (connects at 33600 BPS)

+ms=k56flex,1,300,44000,300,44000

try these

Modem Speed: 9600bps

Command: %B6

Modem Speed: 14400bps

Command: %B9

Modem Speed: 28800bps

Command: %B16

Modem Speed: 33600bps

Command: %B18

The above information is a bit cryptic for a novice, just remember the Command values...

This string has been tested and it works fine, it always connects at 33.6kbps, this is the optimal speed with stable connection.

''AT&F%B18 ''(Set connection speed to 33600bps)

Note: add values excluding the quotes

Q.Where Do I put these strings??

Ans: It's very simlple

Follow these simple steps...

step1) Goto start->settings->control panel.

step2) Click on the modems icon.

step3) Select your modem type in the list and click properties.

step4) Goto Connection tab in the modem properties.

step5) You will find two options

a) Port settings

b) Advanced settings

step6) Click on the advanced settings and add the init strings in the extra

settings box.

add this string:- ''AT&F%B18 ''

there you are!! its done just connect and have fun

*Note:- Most modems claim to connect at higher speeds but that's not true. A lot depends on the dialup connection and the ISP. What I have found is that the ideal connection speed for stable connections is 33.6kbps. However most modems show different connection speeds when connected...

Still facing problems???

just comment!!

Whoz done it ? motorola or D-link ?
Apr 29, 2004 08:24 AM

1st of all I am a kanjoose internet user.. count evety hour I sit online.. n more.. I always try to utilize the BANDWIdTH by downloading something all the time, never let my modems idle just for chatting [ even ritenow I am downloading zone alarm update as I am writing this review hehehe]

I have two modems, 1 ] d-link sm 56 internal[ motorola chipset]

2 ] gvc 56k speakerfone external...

I , myself has worked as a computer assembler for a while now, so what I have experianced abt sm 56

Many people always complain about internal modem... but there never be a problem with modem.. for internal modems...

1]it should be PROPERLY INSTALLED..

2] SM56 IS BIT DIFFICULT TO INSTALL WITH WINDOWS 98/ME.

3] WORKS BEST with windows 2000/xp... no saperate drivers for xp are available.. 2000 drivers works for xp.

4] this modem has the best error control hardware, so , it never disconnects while working.. plus always gives steady performance.

I get the same download speed for following conditions... [ aprox 4.5 kbps]

When my internal modem is connected at the speed of 33.2kbps or

When my external modem is connected at 48.8 kbps speed

Good na? sm 56 is really a good performer...

Best part of internal modem is need no external power supply... consumes no extra space... plus you get one com port free .. good benifits na ?

But sm 56 if not properly installed [ specially in 98/me] is little problem some in disconnection... sometimes fails to disconnect n keeps your line busy, otherwise it always takes 3 to 6 secs to dicsonnect.... I dont know why, so I will really reommend this modem for you as I have seep poor performances of other internal modems.. I suggest you that please please please dont buy mercury, quantam internal modems....

Rocksteady!
Apr 25, 2004 02:26 PM

Hello!

I have D-Link internal modem with Conexant chipset (56kbps) since a year now...

I'm very satisfied with it...no driver problems ever....

And the biggest surprise I got was when I noticed that the driver cd which came with it had drivers for RedHat Linux!! (both rpm package and source tarball!) Hadn't seen drivers for linux ever before on a commercial cd for a modem...or for that matter any other hardware..you either have to download these drivers from manufacturer's website or something else like linuxant.org

I was worried about not being able to find linux drivers for this modem...but this cd surprised me!!

and conexant website has drivers for other popular distributions of linux as well!!!

so all in all..this modem is not only rocksteady in performance, the customer support is great too!

a closing note...slow internet connections are usually due to bad phone line or heavy load on the ISP server, and not because of some fault in modems...

unless ofcourse you break some capacitor on the modem! ;-)

What else to write on a good modem??

Have fun online!

Hi, If you are having a PC at your home and if you want to be online with a bit of download, a bit of chat, a bit of browsing, and if you are not ready to pay much for the modem, this is the one to go. Really a good product. Very ecomonimica. Comes in half the price of the external one and it works to the same effect as the external one does. Very easy to install. Anyone who can open ur mini tower can install it. No hazards while installing. Just start ur computer and it gets automatically installed. Just dont forget to put ur CD into the drive(haha). Dont worry about anything. Just start browsing after a restart. Simple as that. So why pay more for the same thing. Just go for it

You can troubleshoot your Modem
May 24, 2003 03:16 PM

Hi guys, Im back again with new tips on computer hardware...

This time I would like to write on Internal Modems.

THIS REVIEW IS NOT WITH RESPECT TO ANY PRODUCT.... ITS HOW TO SOLVE THE ISSUE WITH INTERNAL MODEMS

I think by the time you reach this article... ur modem should be working fine.

But there are few tips to check weather your modem is using optimum power, or is it reliable... well lets not waste time.

First of all check there is dial tone in the phone line.and also make sure that you properly seated the phone line in the Modem Jack...(LINE).

The first thing you need to check is ... weather its properly seated in the slot on the motherboard... if not please reseat the Modem.

also check a different slot if available.

So check the proper driver is installed in the device manager ... You can get the driver in the Driver CD that is shipped with ur modem.

Once you are done with that....

The best way to reinstall the driver is .... uninstall completely the previous driver. and go with a fresh installation.

And now once you install the driver .... check the modem properties in the Control panel>Phone and Modem>Here you need to be quite technically sound. or use your common sense :)

In the Modem Properties tab click on the Advance TAB and ...look for a tab called QUERY MODEM. Once you click that The system automatically check weather its working or not.

And also make sure which ISP you are calling... I mean check the phone number you are dialling out.

If its a Windows ME or Windows XP(HOME or PRO).

The best way to troubleshoot is run system restore(YOU CAN USE THIS IF YOUR MODEM WAS WORKING FINE EARLIER AND SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING AFTER SOME TIME---MAY BE YOU MADE SOME CHANGE UNKNOWINGLY)

How to system restore..... Click on start>program>accessories>system tools>system restore.

This has a user frendly GUI... its very simple and teaches how to do it ... step by step.

hey guys...

I love to troubleshoot Modem ... no matter its a Internal, External, Or a Cable Modem.

Please mail me the issue.. I will send you the solution.

here's my mail id. abhishekna@rediffmail.com

Some times cant hear dial tone while dialing
Feb 22, 2002 07:51 PM

The Modem performance is very good, but the only problem I find is sometimes I cant hear the dial tone and so totally unaware of the status, because some times auto dialing starts and we are unaware of it. speed wise it is good. The modem is also dead cheap compared to external modem and no bother for adapters. Also I found this modem not so easy to install as all my Bus are full with various cards. I could also find the Driver files for The modem easily on the internet. It also works fine with standard modem driver files in setup.

Good deal
Mar 26, 2001 10:25 PM

There is much hype made about using an internal modem, but after using the d-link internal modem for over an year now, I have found nothing unusual or awkward about it. An internal modem works exactly the same the way as an external modem and there is no difference in the data transfer speed or connectivity. The only difference that is there between these two is that you cannot switch off an internal modern, a drawback that comes under consideration only when there is bad weather outside.

The sole risk in using an internal modem is that whenever there are the voltage fluctuations there is a chance of damaging the computer due to the fluctuations. But practically speaking, the slightest chance of this thing to happen is when you use the modem even when it is raining and lightning outside. So, in my case I just avoid using the modern in such conditions thereby saving almost 50 percent of the money.
