Broken Arrow -Super Action

Virks in the Rig Veda According to the Jat historian, Bhim Singh Dhaiyas book "Aryan Tribes and the Rig Veda", a prince named Dasyave Vrika, is mentioned in the Rig Veda (Vlll/51/2, Vlll/55/1, Vlll/56/1). He can be identified with the Virk clan of the Jats and also with the Virk people in the Iranian history, who gave their name to the province of Varkania /Hyrcania in Iran.

Virks in other ancient texts

According to the Patanjali Bhashya (4.6-114), Ashtadhyayi (l-6-155), Mahabhasya( 4-2-154) and Kashikavarti (1-1-175), Raja Virk Vardhan built forts in:

Kasrud (present-day Mandsor) in central India Shakil (Sialkot) Sosaph Dathaaprastha Naudipur Koak Kandewa Mula Pava Datt Karkar Virkgary.

According to Thakur Yugendrapal, the Virks are the Vahilkas (they are believed to be the founders of Bahawalpur) who are mentioned in the Mahabharata and who took one-sixth of the income of the King Shalya, who was the king of the Madras and ruled over Madradesa (modern-day Sialkot). In the 4th century AD, they had a powerful kingdom. They were the contemporaries of the Gupta rulers. According to Brij Indra Bhaskar, in 428 AD, the Virk rulers performed a big Yagya near Bayana and constructed a pillar, on which they mentioned themselves as Virks. Rock inscriptions of Yasodharman have been found in Mandsor. Their reign in Malwa came to an end in 462 AD.

Physical Attributes

Historically, the Virks had unique physical attributes. In the history books, they have been described as tall, muscular, courageous and loyal. These physical and mental attributes made them ideal candidates for recruitment in the armies of various Kings and Maharajas. They served in the British Army, and still comprise a sizeable portion of the Pakistani and Indian armies.

They don't make movies like these anymore
Jun 02, 2007 11:13 PM 2286 Views

I just happened to see Broken Arrow after a long time today and it thrilled me as much as thrilled me before. A typical 90s Action Thriller which does not lose momentum. They do not make action movies like these anymore, even if they do. they show too much emotion and cliche'd dialogues which disturbs the whole momentum. Even James Bond movies nowadays have become a drag.

Coming back to the movie, Major Deakins played by John Travolta is a frustrated army officer who steals nuclear weapons and blackmails the US government for money or he'll activate the weapons while Captain Hale played by Christian Slater tries to stop him with the help of a park ranger Terry Carmichael played by Samantha Mathis. I will not reveal the plot much.

The plot is very intelligiently laid out and Travolta's character as a deranged genius is very well-defined. The action sequences are as good as any movie I've seen. It is a very absorbing movie which is also well edited. The one-liners are nice and the two main characters played by Travolta and Slater are constantly shown to outdo each other like playing a game of chess.

If you like action movies and if you like thrillers. this is a must watch movie.

Boom boom bang bang!

John Woo's Broken Arrow starts out swinging, and quickly develops into a fast-paced action thriller that never lets up until its explosive conclusion. The plot is constantly moving forward, building momentum, and barely leaving time to catch a breath. Sure it has a few totally unbelievable plot twists, like a most convenient escape from a nuclear blast in a mine. But if you just hang on, and go along for the ride, you will have a very entertaining time indeed.

In the best action role of his career so far, Christian Slater stars as USAF pilot, Captain Riley Hale. His fellow pilot is Major Vic Deakins, played by John Travolta. The two men are in constant competition, with the older Deakins usually coming out on top. They are assigned to fly a B3 bomber armed with two nuclear bombs. While on a night mission, Deakins attempts to kill Hale and take over the plane. Quick reactions by Hale, saves his life, but Deakins manages to eject him from the plane. Deakins releases the two nuclear devices, which parachute to earth, and then ejects himself, leaving the plane to crash land.

Deakins as supremely confident, riding on the edge of madness. He has planned the theft well, and is aided by a group of mercenaries, led by former Raider Howie Long, ready to recover and move the nukes. Meanwhile, Hale has picked up a partner in the shapely form of park ranger Terry Charmichael, played by the spunky Samantha Mathis. The pair is all that stands between Deakins and his plan to ransom the weapons back to the US Government. Hale and Deakins clash, and continue to match wits all along the way, elevating their personal competition to one with much higher stakes.

Slater is engaging as the lightly regarded youngster, battling against overwhelming odds. Teamed with Sam Mathis, they are an energetic one-two punch, that look great together. Park ranger Chamichael never backs down, and is cool and competent under pressure.

Broken Arrow is Hong Kong action director John Woo's second American feature, and it has the masters' usual touch. Guns, bombs, explosions are all standard fare, as are the slow motion shots. Yes it is definitely a matter of style over substance, but it is such an entertaining and appealing style. Simple things like following a thrown hammer hitting someone's head become so much fun. Woo also seems to favor blowing up choppers, and no less than four wind up in flames in separate incidents. A terrific action picture from beginning to end. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is a plus. This one is just meant to be enjoyed without too much thought. An interesting little menu, is wasted as the only extra is a trailer. Recommended without reservations to any fan of action movies.

...And I used to think Terminator was my fav action flick...

The arrow hits the bull's eye!

John Woo is a film maker known for making action movies that thrill all sorts of audiences. Even audiences that aren't big fans of action are aware that John Woo has the potential to make the type of action movie that has the power to keep them glued to the screen. There are several reasons behind this expertise of Mr. Woo. Numero uno, one can't forget that in all his movies, such as FACE/OFF, he incorporates emotional bonding in the action drama. Besides, characters are portrayed in a manner that looks straight out of life. Third, the movies are high on technique: the stunts, the thrills, the camera work, the screenplay, the lovely background music, and most importantly, editing is so crisp that not even one scene looks wasted and forced into the narrative.

So when Broken Arrow came back last decade, there were a lot of hopes from the movie to deliver. And rightly so, from day one of its release the hype showed. All over the question was, ''Did it work?'' While one has to say that APPARENTLY some critics wrote it off by no major praise, one also has to say that BROKEN ARROW clicked big time with the majority of the audiences. When a regular cinegoer enters the theatres to watch a movie, entertainment is the most important thing that viewer is looking for. Logic, as many critics suggest as an important ingredient for a success, takes a back seat when lights go off and the action rolls in, at least at times this happens (logic taking a backsteat)! Unless of course you're watching a Tom Hanks movie, there's no use to expect a lot in terms from any movie in terms of logic, especially when Hollywood makes an ACTION movie.

Still, after watching Broken Arrow, I realized that John Woo had delivered the goods, much better than many of the makers' counterparts do when they make their ACTION movies. John Woo sticks to his typical style of film-making and directs a thriller that goes places into the hearts of the viewer, especially a viewer with three sorts of mentalities. One, mentality of being a hardcore action fan. Two, mentality of being a John Travolta fan. Last but not the least, three, being a Christian Slater fan. If you've got even one of these mentalities, BROKEN ARROW is a treat to watch. Even otherwise, it is worth the time invested in it. In one line, ''IT THRILLS YOU!''

For me, an action fan, BROKEN ARROW is probably one of the best movies made in Hollywood. But as an objective reviewer, where speaking for others is equally important, I would still say that BROKEN ARROW is at least a movie worth watching. Even one scene in the movie isn't forced in. The proceedings are highly enticing and moment after moment there's a mini-climax giving a U-Turn to the proceedings. Although the main climax, obviously in an action movie like this, is predictable, one can easily say that its execution is twice as good as the expectations from it. Besides, as mentioned in the first paragraph of the review, the movie meets all the qualities that every John Woo movie, including FACE/OFF, has!

The most thrilling part of BROKEN ARROW is the awesome performance given by each and every artist in the movie, from Travolta to his gangmate who he threw out of the jeep---everyone is way above average and adequate in their part.

The movie, inarguably belongs to John Travolta. The extremely efficient actor carries the movie on his shoulders with immense ease. He hardly shows that he's worked hard for the movie, since he's always busy doing some work in his career. Yet he manages to deliver a performance that easily rocks the socks off the viewer. His boxing sequence in the beginning, the action sequence in the climax, and all the comic and sarcastic scenes stand out in the viewer's memory even ABOUT a decade post the movie's release! Kudos to Travolta who proves yet again that he's one of the best, or arguably even THE BEST Hollywood has to offer!

While John Travolta does steal the show, it is definitely an overstatement to say that no one else is noticeable. Christian Slater is another actor to watch out for, DEFINITELY! There are plenty of reasons his fans can be pleased, myself being one of them. Firstly Slater should be proud for pulling of a role, that though of the main positive lead, is still nowhere compared to Travolta's in terms of quality and charisma. The way Slater does his part is what makes him stand out. His pulling the stunts, his comic timing, and his chemistry with all his co-stars demonstrates how under-used this power-house of talent is. A performance which is a treat for Slater's fans and a reminder for top-notch makers to cast him! Samantha Mathis too looks graceful in the role of a park ranger. Besides she even gives an adequate performance. The supporting cast too succeeds in doing their job well.

Overall, BROKEN ARROW works for all the reasons mentioned in the review---great technique, crisp editing (Below 2 hours length of the movie), top-notch action direction, and high-profile performances. Watch it if you haven't, and it is safe to say that satisfaction over this recommendation is guaranteed!

Wooow... Attitude .. !!!
Oct 05, 2003 10:01 PM 2548 Views

There are movies, and then there are movies with attitude. If you like movies with attitude, you are gonna love broken arrow. In short, the story goes hence ...

John Travolta is an ace pilot, who flies stealth planes loaded with nukes. Christian Slater is his junior. Travolta has a bit of a problem with authority. And he gets really mad when he is passed up for a promotion. He decides to get back. On one of his sortie missions, he manages to crash his plane, of course, before dumping his payload of two nukes at pre-designate sites, and then bails out. Slater is his co-pilot, and somehow manages to escape before the crash. So, now we have a race where Travolta has to get the nukes to the buyers, and Slater is trying to stop him from doing that. In the process, Slater enlists the help of a female park ranger. Although the ending is predictable, let me not go into any more details. To say it in short, the movie is a treat for Travolta fans.

The movie is full of slow motion action scenes, absolutely typical of John Woo films. Travolta is brilliant. Whether it is his action scenes, or his one-liners, Travolta carries it off with aplomb. As a matter of fact, he is so good at times, that you dont even notice that there are other people in the movie. Slater is good too, in the role of the determined rookie, hell bent on stopping his corrupt senior.

Some of the scenes that stand out in the movie:

  1. Where Travolta is smoking in front of his senior, and his senior disapproves of it. Travolta actually puts out the cigarette with his fingers.

  2. The fight between Travolta and Slater inside the cockpit of the plane.

  3. The detonation of the nuke inside a mine deep below the earth, and the resulting copter crash.

  4. The climax.

The scenes are very well shot, against the stark background of the desert. Dialogues are good, and the attitude absolutely suits Travolta's mean cut in the movie. And did I mention, the soundtrack is very very good, perfectly complimenting the slo-mo action scenes. Overall, a must watch for all action fans, John Woo fans, and above all, Travolta fans.

Broken Arrow - Better Than People Think.
Jul 15, 2001 10:54 PM 3086 Views

Broken Arrow - 1996 - Twentieth Century Fox

Starring - John Travolta, Christian Slater, Samantha Mathis, Vondie Curtis-Hall.

Director - John Woo.

First Impressions - I first saw this film on TV. I hadn't really noticed it existed until then, however I taped it and enjoyed it very much. I then did what I normally do, go out and buy the original video and added it to my collection. Since then I have watched it many times and even though I rate it as a good film, I can honestly say that it is not the best. Don't let this put you off though, it is a good film to watch when you want a night in with a few beers, or when you are bored.

Minor description of plot - The film starts in a boxing ring in a USAF base in Utah. The two main actors in the film, Vic Deakins (John Travolta) and Riley Hale (Christian Slater) are pilots in the USAF. They are having a sparring match to fill in the spare time and keep up their levels of fitness. Deakins is a lot older than Hale and thus means he has been boxing a lot longer. You will now know the winner of the sparring session.

This follows by the two pilots going to the briefing room in which Hale finds out that the two of them will be piloting a B3 stealth bomber armed with nuclear weapons. This is because the air force are worried about the fact that, even though the stealth is undetecable to radar, the weapons may give off low radiation. They pursue to the aircraft where they take off on their mission.

The next thing you notice is that there is a lot of activity in the Utah national park, this is actually Deakins team that he has got together because he is intent on stealing these weapons.

After they have completed the mission and go into autopilot mode, Deakins fools Hale into looking out of the window, pulls a gun on him and after a fight Hale has to eject. This leaves Deakins to drop the bombs to the ground and then eject himself.

The next morning Hale recovers and wakes up, not knowing where he is, or where the plane or Deakins is. He is then confronted by the park ranger Terri Carmichael (Samantha Mathis) who is not bothered what he says, she is just intent on arresting him. After a tussle, he convinces her that, although he cannot tell her what happened, he needs help to fulfil the mission of getting the weapons back.

That is all I am prepared to say about the film but I hope that from what I have wrote, you will be prepared to watch the film.

Plus points - The acting is quite good, John Travolta was in the process of making several films when he made this. This doesn't show and he puts all of his effort into this movie.

John Woo making sure that it would be hard to make a sequel from this film. I don't think that this film was quite respected enough for a follow up.

I would normally say here my comments on the special features of the DVD but unfortunately I only have the VHS version.

Samantha Mathis looking lovely as aver.

Minus Points - Like I have said, even though I regard John Woo as a very good director, I think he should concentrate more on the martial arts side of his movies. However, the fight sequences are well choreographed.

I thought some parts of the film were predictable and how did Hale know where Deakins was going. If you have seen the film you will know what I meant by that.

Technical Wizardry at it's Best
Apr 09, 2001 06:05 PM 2552 Views

This is another typical John Woo film. It is simply excellent. It stars John Travolta and Christian Slater. Travolta a senior officer in the army is disgruntled because he gets passed over for promotion. He decides to get even. He manages to steal two nukes. Slater who is a protégé of Travolta has to stop him. He is helped by a Park Ranger who is the female lead in the film. In the end he manages to prevent the sell off of the nukes. But that’s beside the point.

The stunts in this film are superb. Travolta sets off a nuclear bomb. The bomb is placed in a mine 2000 feet below. The explosion has been shown wonderfully whether it is the trembling of the earth and the ripples or waves created as sand layers run over each other. It is terrific. All electronic equipment as we all know cannot work due to the radiation. This results in the crash of a helicopter. The highlights of this film are the technical finesse and wizardry. Apart from that lover boy Travolta from Grease plays a baddie for the first time. Christian Slater looks cool as ever. The climax sequence is slick. The entire movie sort of floats along without any jerks. There are the usual wisecracks and all.

Overall it is a must see.
