I bought this cool and stylish laptop in winter 2006 when HP had just lauchied new designs.. Going by ratings on US websites, I decided to buy this. I was very proud of its looks. Also, this was bit cheaper compared to intel counterpart with no compromise on performance. This came with 1 year warranty.
I was very excited and everything seemed to fine until one day when I could no more play a DVD borrowed from a friend. Immediately, I took this to service centre in indiranagar. After confirming there is problem with DVD writer (faulty), they promptly replaced it. This happened within 4 months of purchase !!
After 9 months, I observed that laptop was giving battery backup less than 30 minutes. Again, I headed to service centre and got it replaced with new battery pack. Today, after 2 years it gives approximately 1 hr backup.
Approximately after year and half, sound card stopped working abruptly when I was watching a movie... .!!!!! I was scarred to visit the service centre for this problem becuausei know the people there would just be waiting for bakra to come w/owarranty (you are fully exposed now !) & swipe his credit card forATLEAST 2000 for ?
In a week or so, I got call from HP service centre with offer for extended warranty. .. Yaaaa..hooooooooooo... But, my happiness was just short lived when she quoted Rs. 5, 000.00+ ONLY for just 1 year extended warranty !!! I had just finished paying the EMIs, (remember Rs.53, 000.00 purchase price). Now how does this sound to spend 5000 for 1 year warranty extension. (thats more than 15% of current market price of laptop). I just rejected the offer w/o second thought.
Other than above, laptop si perfectly fine (no crash with XP) and good number for features (bluetooth, card reader, wlan etc etc).. I liked the compact size fo screen (14"), keyboard layout.
Summary: Till now, I have had 3 hardware related problems in less than 2 years of purchase. Oh forgot to add one more.. now a days, this laptop I use as heater .. I mean it gets heated up in 15-20mins of boot up .... This means I can no more use my LAP for LAPTOP !!!!..
This basically means HP compaq has just fitted cheap and low poor quality stuffs inside thier laptops. Only outside looks are attractive. Ideally, one should be getting warranty extended whenever a manufacturer defect is detected. !!! but I have no time to fight with HP/Compaq guys.
All problems resovled for free untill you have warranty !! After that god save us !!!!! My suggestion would be to look for DELL or any other good brand.. I did not buy DELL because, dell was selling laptops online w/o any local dealership at that time.
By the way, a USB sound card saved my life at cost just Rs.250... Just that laptop is no more fully portable.. (internal speakers and mic does not work !!).
Still if you have decied to go ahead and buy HP/compaq product, remember incase you are workign professional, HP service centre is open only during your office hours (mon-friday) !! :-)
