You need to know your photography before you can criticize any camera. Enthusiast's cameras need to be taken down to the manual mode and played to get SLR-quality photos. Such cameras are not something which you'd use as a point-and-shoot in auto mode.

That said, the H2 is a milestone in Sony's prosumer range of cameras, but it's potential gets unleashed only when it's used in a manual mode. Of course it has been built keeping a wide variety of users in mind. Give it to a newbie and he will handle it just fine with the auto mode, but that will never match the photo quality what an experienced person can bring out with Tv / Av / MX modes.

Under manual usage, it gives very low noise levels for low light photography and long exposures(5 seconds and above) turn out with exceptional detail and clarity. The camera itself is quite tough and under my use, it was subjected to a lot of extremes including falls, rainfall, foggy weather and lots more. It took everything without a flinch.

The battery consumption is very frugal for a camera of such standards. Top it up with a duo of AA-size 2500 MAh cells, and it's ready for a day of heavy shooting(without flash usage). Just to compare, it's direct competitor, the Canon Powershot S3IS takes 4xAA batteries and lasts approximately the same.

Excelent camera

I had been using this camera for around 18 months. this is too good cam to start with. The manual setting is excellent. The photo quality is excellent.

12 x optical zoom rocks. Battery life is ok like not too good not too bad. Macro photography is excellent. Flash is also nice. Various settings really matters not like other cameras where even if you change the setting they don't cause much difference in photos but here in sony H2 the setting really works as expected. Video quality is also excellent. I bought this camera from korea airport, one of my friend bought it for me.

Good for amature professionals

I am using this camera for last 1 year. Its good enough for a beginer professional hobbyist.

It has limited but usefull manual settings. Manual shutter speed, aparature and focal length, ISO control is good to learn in this camera. Macro mode is also helpfull to get real close up pictures.

Price is a bit high but the picture quality is good.

(check some of my pics in https://picasaweb.google.com/dipayan.aich)

6MP is enough to get started and get 5x7 prints. Zoom is good and precise and steady shot helps to get the image sharp while you use the zoom or you are using the camera under low light or you got really a shakey hand.

But under low light you can see grains in pictures. Flash is powerfull,

which is good at times but sometimes it spoils the picture with over

brightness.

LCD display is clear and can be visible under all lighting condition. the EVF is also as good as the LCD to find the focus. Its supplied batteries(AA rechargeable) are good enough to get around 300 pics with out flash while fully charged.

Main disadvanage of this camera package is it doesnt come with enough memory and any casing.

Its size is also a big concern. But its ok for a camera with near SLR features.

A very Fine Camera
Oct 30, 2006 10:53 PM3710 Views

A good camera from Sony. I just bought it 3 weeks back. Excellent zoom which gives very fine pictures. So many features packed in a small camera. I was using a Ricoh SLR earlier and it's a nice change. I am yet to get hold of all that I can do with it. A good value for money.

Try to get a good deal on the net. I saved around 5500 bucks.

Tried using the zoom feature and I could read a small poster on the wall 150 metres away.

Accessories do not include a camera case which is a pity.

The included USB cable and software make it easy to view pictures on PC and uploading on the web.

An AV cable (supplied) enables watching pictures and videos on TV.

With a 1 Gb Sony ProDuo stick (bought separately) I can take 340 odd pictures at 6MP resolution. Otherwise a 12 minute video can also be recorded.

Waste of Megapixels and Your Money

Purpose of this review is to share my experiences with the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H2 with others who may be thinking of buying it. The camera was used four weeks before returning back to Sony.

I was looking to upgrade from my Canon G5 to something with a little more flexibility and features for a vacation I was going to take. Although tempted, I decided not to leap to a DSLR. Based upon research and initial reviews, prior to its release from Sony I ordered Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H2 and its full range of accessories (Telephoto, wide-angle, micro-lenses, etc). Initially I had few problems, but on the first full day of my European vacation the DSC-H2's Shutter Button disintegrated making the camera completely useless for the rest of vacation. I regret buying it and if you buy this camera so will you.

Pro

None: The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H2 fell apart before I could find any.

Con:

So what were the problems I encountered when trying to use DSC-H2?

1). Batteries Problems: Two Sony Stamina NiMH batteries that came with the DSC-H2 were defective and would not take a charge. I had to buy my own batteries before I could even begin to use the camera. DSC-H2 seemed to drain batteries at a higher rate than what specifications stated it would. Length of battery charging cycle seem excessive.

2). Extremely flimsy construction. Several weeks after receiving the camera, on the first full day of my vacation after only three pictures, the DSC-H2's Shutter Button completely disintegrated. No Shutter Button and no pictures. When Sony refused to deal with this problem at all, I was forced to buy another digital camera in Europe to take my pictures. Being completely useless for taking pictures, the DSC-H2 and all of its accessories just took up space and remained in my luggage. See my comments about Sony Customer Support on trying to resolve this and other problems associated with this camera.

3). SanDisk 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo "Reinsert memory card" error . When looking at the camera I believed Sony statement that DSC-H2 was compatible with SanDisk 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. I bought three of them for a vacation to Europe. They were completely worthless. It must be assumed Sony had tested the DSC-H2 and was aware of this defect before market and sold the camera to general public. See my comments about Sony Customer Support on trying to resolve this and other problems associated with this camera.

4). Super SteadyShot® stabilization did not work 20% of time. Some images so blurred you could not tell what they were.

5). Image Noise. Some at ISO 200. Noticeable at ISO 400. Noise levels at ISO 800 made most images unusable.

6). Zoom Pixalization. Use of zoom caused a significant degree of pixalization which was especially noticeable at 10x and up. I don’t care how big your telephoto capability- if it is distorted or you can not use the image- what good is it.

7). Wide Angle Lense Chromatic aberration and distortion. When using Sony wide angle lense experienced purple fringe and peripheral distortion of images. Some is to be expected, but this was excessive.

8). Autofocus: In short time I had and used camera, some minor problems developed with autofocus (it would intermittently stopped working and I had to do it manually). With this starting to occur with the DSC-H2 brand new, there is no telling how extensive it would have become over time.

9) . DSC-H2 Ergonomics: Camera fatigue quickly becomes a problem. I found the camera awkward and difficult to hold. With the bulk and weight close to that of a DSLR, but with none of the advantages. The lens adapter is very cumbersome. The various control and function buttons are oddly placed and most are difficult to access and use.

10). Flash takes longer than normal to recharge. The result was missing a number of what would have been some great pictures.

11). Small LCD monitor 2.5 inches. It was very difficult to see in direct sunlight. Made image composition rather difficult.

12). The primary reason you buy a camera is for the images it will take. DSC-H2's Overall Image Quality? I can sum it up in two words- Extremely Disappointing! Based upon initial reviews I had a certain level of expectation. But when I compared several images of Swiss mountains that was taken at the same time and under same light conditions, my daughter’s 4 megapixel camera produces equivalent and in some cases better images than 6 megapixel DSC-H2. When compared with my old 5 megapixel Canon G5, there can be no real comparison. DSC-H2 is not even in the same league.

13). When you buy a camera you purchase not only the hardware, but the support behind it. Sony Customer Support- Based upon over 20 hours (5 of which were spent calling long distance from Switzerland) of dealing with these individuals during the process of trying to resolve this problem I found that when it comes to Sony and product support you are on your own. If you have a problem with their products- its your problem and not theirs. I found Sony Customer Support to be incompetent, lazy, purposely provide you with misinformation, out-right-lie to you, high degree of ignorance, empty promises and refusal of mid-level supervisors to do their job, supervisors who seemed to be on a power trip, frustration. Etc. etc. Instead of trying to help solve problem- they became a major part of the problem. They tried to wear you down and make you give up.

Conclusion

I had great hopes for the DSC-H2 when I bought it. But because of all of the above, The day when Hell freezes over will be the day I buy another Sony camera. Until then I will stick to Canon and plan to buy a PowerShot S3 IS.

The best in its segment

I just bought this one last week and am really amazed at the clarity of pictures that this camera produces. Transferred some of it to my pc and was wonder struck. The 12X zoom allows you to take pictures otherwise you could only imagine of. I took a picture at 12X zoom and those words that aren't visible to the naked eye are also easily captured in the camera. The image stabilization feature really works because even the slightest movement of the hands at full zoom will produce a blurred photo. I got a decent photo at full zoom me not having very stable hands :-) The Carl Zeiss lens is really awesome. One more advantage is that it has internal memory 32MB and whenever you run out of memory stick space, you can also use this internal memory for that extra photos which you would have otherwise missed. I'll follow up this review in more detail after I start using it extensively. It doesn't come with a memory stick and so have ordered one. I'll be receiving it in a couple of days time and after that I'll be exploring the innumerable features of this great camera.

I'm editing this review now. Went on a summer tour to east india and of course my close companion was the Sony-DSCH2.

Simply to compare my old camera Sony-DSC-P72 and this one I asked my dad to carry the old one along in his pouch. After returning from the tour and transferring everything to the pc, I was really amazed at the quality difference. So much life and color on the pics clicked with the h2. And I experimented with a portable tripod (Sony brand) in twilight mode I took pictures of the moon. If anybody wants send me an M2M i'll mail u the photos taken without tripod and with. You can compare and see for yourself. There was so much satisfaction in the final outcome. The flash as I had already said was excellent. Upto 10metres in pitch darkness, the photos have come very clear. Sony claims upto 16m. Will have to try such a long distance yet. Some of the SLR-like features like varying the focus point area were tried out. The same photo taken twice with different focus points looked different in different aspects. Ppl if u r a novice/intermediate photographer and don't want to invest in an dSLR this is just the right one for u. Right size, Right Price, Right quality, Right functionality.

I even tested macro photography from within 5cm range. If you want I can send the sample pics. I'll let the picture do the talking. Just M2M me.
