Poetry Reviews

Unsatisfied
Aug 12, 2023 07:30 AM (via Mobile)

I had wrote many poems from 1997 to 2010 on poetry.com. When poetry.com started back again they want money to send an email and use their website. I can no longer access my work and wish I knew how to get it back. Yet they want $1 to send an email or your email is concerned SPAM. How do I get my work that I wrote from Mild-School up to adulthood back, when they are unwilling to help?

Pointless website
Apr 10, 2008 08:16 PM

Why even waste time on such screw-ups? It'd rob your dreams.

Better, publish in the Little Magazines and establish yourself. It will also give you a good foundation of getting enough honest feedbacks. Poetry.com's feedbacks, as one can obviously see, are meant to please you so that you spend for your own efforts and make them pointlessly rich.

And use good free online libraries to read good literature(such as https://webliterature.net for classic novels and poems). Make the best use of internet instead of getting scammed.

That should make you a happier person - not crappy websites as this one.

[And now I feel like saying DAMM to mouthshut.com - as I try to post this review, it cribs and refuses to accept my feedback saying that I must write 150 words to post it. Why do I need to invent a story just for the heck of it! I have already said what I wanted to say, have I not?]

Yes a fantastic site...write a poem on Jack and Jill and it probably will be accepted.

Your poem will be up for print within a fortnight and youll receive an artistes release form authorising its release and along with that an oppurtunity to buy the compilation of many such budding poets from around the world.

Better still you might receive an invite to a function for which youll have to pay thru your nose to attend and in every likelyhood will be hard to do so.

Have been misled by this site ....so have many other friends I know specially this young vain Lady who went all out to the local press and announced that her poem has been awarded/accepted. By the way she's now become a full time poet :-)

So much for the pep and enthusiasm this site has provided her.Every phrace she

now writes , she considers it poetry .Guess as friends we have to bear the brunt of it.

I would like to reach out to all school children to post their poetry on this site , feel pepped up to get a good review and then maybe from the lot at least a few would emerge as good poets.;-) in future.

Truth in between
Dec 14, 2005 03:44 PM

Hi all

Like always the truth here too is in between.

While it is certainly wrong on the part of a publisher to ask for money from the author to get his work published, even publishers like macmillan are doing this.

Here are a few facts

  • I have received an anthology of poems from poetry.com and I consider myself lucky on getting it. They are undoubtedly playing with emotions of the poets. However one argument is - why do poets need to see their name engraved in so called anthologies- why can't they just write and keep writing - the way I and many others do

  • I also agree that never should a poet pay for getting his work published. In the worst scenario - he may not get anything apart from a few sample copies

  • Poetry is not read much in a nation like India where many people don't get enough to survive or exist

  • Very few of the educated lot understand poetry or rather have the time to go through it and appreciate it. Everyone is tied up in daily affairs, buying home, building career etc.

  • Publishing poetry becomes a risky proposition for publishers

to all poets out there - pls keep writing and dont bother about others' perception about your work - the purpose of poetry is to unleash your emotions and give a vent to your feelings

So Chill!

What A Scam
Jun 06, 2005 04:39 PM

I, like countless others, submitted one of my works to the poetry.com. I was not interested in the contest, but my girlfriend thought I should submit one just for the heck of it. Well, of course I got thier letter informing me of being a finalist, and of course being published in the Who's Who Of Poetry. I thought this sounded kind of funny as how they were wanting to publish my work, and wanted me to pay them. I did a little investigating and found that 20/20 had actually done an expose' on this site. The link to the article is https://windpub.com/literary.scams/abc-nlp.htm . I myself, just went ahead and set up my own site, with my own works on it. It is mainly intended for my girlfriend, so that she can have an online library of the poems I have written just for her. I hope that someone eventually does something to stop the endless scamming of people on the net. But, then again, if people would stop and look into what they are doing, alot of these companies would simply fade away.

A HORRIBLE SITE
Apr 25, 2004 03:31 PM

This site has most likely broken the heart and souls of thousands of aspiring poets (I know because I was one). We all have the dream of one day becoming famous for something we love, and this pitiful excuse for a site played on this. The operators of this site must have no morality,. they must not care that they make so many people feel as though they have accomplished something, yet in reality they have justed been jerked around with to ween a few dollars out of them.

Never should a site where YOU win force u to pay money for a book u appear in! that was my first warning sign, and the next was going to this site and reading all these reviews about the incredible scam this site is.

DO NOT TRUST THIS SITE, obviously many others have learned the hard way! any website that does not have an email address where u can contact them is a bad sign. I searched for a customer service email address so I could ask about the details of my ''semi-finalist'' status. Lo and behold all I say was a mail address and a phone #. why would a web site have no absolutely no way for its customers to contact them? odd heh? I thought so too.

My departing words are steer clear of the COMPLETE SCAM and get famous the old fashioned way, working at it and putting your work out there, not in some obsurd contest. Don't let yourself be dooped like I was, and many, many others as well.

Poetry.com SCAM

They accept 100% of their applicants and feed off the money of parents after over exciting their poor children. Try eliteskills.com instead, it's a wonderful poetry community(submit your poems and get comments). First off they send you a letter that says you are the semi finalist in their ''international poetry'' competition. Then they say you're good enough to have your poetry on a cd. All for a ''minimal price'' of course. Your poetry will never be read! These books are not sold in book stores and the only people that will see your works are the ones that where also duped. The people running the site are evil. I still don't see how this site can still be running because of such moral corruption. They make so much money off the broken hearts of young writers, it's disgusting. They continue to increase their wealth to this day, rich as can be with their pockets full of children's tears.

Poetry.cheaters
May 21, 2003 06:17 PM

I have given 3 of my poems to poetry.com ,well a month later I got a letter from them saying that my poem has been selected for a coffee table edition and they want my consent to get it published. I was all excited and suddenly I got the airs about myself that Iam an international poet, started dreaming that now finally I am going to earn through my talent but all this ended when one day I came to know from a friend of mine that they(poetry.com) send these kind of letters of appreciation to every second person who gives them their poem. The selection of words in that letter is so flattering and makes you feel so good that they get what they want from you , an affirmative yes to get the poetry published.Later on I recieved a letter saying that I have won myself $1000 for the best poem of the month.Well that $1000 still did not raech but I have spent around 1000 rupees writting letters to them.Guys if you are already associated with Poetry.com dont be flattered and if you are thinking about it STOP thinking

WARNING !!! THIS SITE CONTAINS UNAPPROPRIATE ...
Apr 29, 2003 01:13 PM

WARNING !!! THIS SITE CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT IS CONSIDERED UNAPPROPRIATE FOR INTELLIGENT PEOPLE !!!

Enter only if you have no brains …

Terms of agreement:

  1. You are an aspiring poet (enthu)

  2. You don’t have any common sense

  3. You haven’t read reviews on Poetry.com at MouthShut.com

  4. You like to get cheated

  5. You are a stupid

I want the above to be the index page for the POETRY.COM website. For I made the same mistake two years ago… A friend of mine one day asked me what to do with 1000 dollars, I laughed over him saying that I only knew of Murugan Dollar that one can get at the Palani temple! Then he opened a huge postal cover over which it was printed POETRY.COM and a small verse from Robert Frost’s poem. I was shocked to see the stamp … “US Postal Dept.” Oooops !!! It’s real man !!! Inside was a somewhat nice poem, “You” signed as “V.Karthikeyan”, my friend. The people at poetry.com said that they liked the poem and wanted to include that in their book of poems also they will include it in a tape if he agrees…

I never tried writing poems till then, but having the above mentioned qualifications (Terms of agreement) at that time, that night I sat and wrote a beautiful poem (atleast for me), “Queen of the Night” and submitted on Poetry.com. I was impressed by seeing “Please wait, searching over billion poems …” on the website and was delighted. A month passed and I almost forgot about the matter, but suddenly I got the same postal cover and I jumped here and there for nothing …

What is wrong about this site? Nothing… it does nothing and u gain nothing (except for the post). It is not even worth a fraction to the MOUTHSHUT.COM. It seems these people are just cheating you. Even if you submit “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star…” You are likely to get the post ! (exaggerated) You don’t even get any opportunity to share your poem effectively among people and receive any comments on it. Then what is the use of this sit?

But I found ONE BIG ADVANTAGE !!! It has grown in me a passion for writing poems and I still continue this. If you like to read my poems, I’ll send you if u mail me at jazzyabis@rediffmail.com hope u’ll like it. Other than this there is nothing on this site. Even though it has interesting competitions like motion poetry etc. I fails to thrill and lacks substance and character, I doubt they give any prizes. Now that you have learnt about this site try to keep away from it and being goofed. Recently they have also removed INDIA from the list of Nations, thanx INDIANS wont get baffled any more. BEWARE !

One more suggestion: I think everyone at MouthShut have a beautiful language, why not we have a poetry page at mouthshut.com ?

Con site
Apr 28, 2003 07:41 PM

I first came across poetry.com around two and half years back when one of my friends very excitedly told me he was going to go to the US. initially I was very happy for him but I soon turned sceptic when I heard the details. he said that he had just started writing poems(due to some obscure inspiration)and was scouring the net for poetries when he came upon this site. he then wrote a poem and posted it there. lo and behold! within 2 weeks he had received a letter to attend a conference in Washington where his poem would be read out and to buy a book where his poem would be printed. well my scepticism turned to certainty that there was something wrong when I read his poem. although he is my friend, I can say that monstrosity he called a poem can never be printed; much less read out in an international conference. he was however determined to make the best of this opportunity fate had given him and go to the US. thankfully an ill timed exam schedule stopped him from doing so.

the second time was a year back. one of my friend's mother very proudly showed me the letter her son had just received from poetry.com. I somehow convinced her not to spend on the book and that it was a fraud.

poetry.com is a ingenious method of fraud. it uses the power of the net. it does not cost nething for the site to host the poems on a freeserver site. its revenue model is simple it earns from the book and also I presume from travel of those unfortunate to go to its fictitious seminar(although I havent been able to verify this). its however surprising that such a fraudulent site should exist for such a long period. seems like there r a lot of beleivers.

Poetry Scams
Apr 28, 2003 06:53 PM

Who wouldn't know poetry.com and ILP? All the people who posted there probably received by now an email from dear Nigel Hillary at Noble House Publishers.

After falling for the trick of ILP I instantly got this tickling feeling in my stomach when I read Mr Hillary's email.

I started doing my own little investigation and got stuck on their website. Tracing a phone number from there was easy, but then the whole thing started to get difficult.

Check at https://poetryin-e-motion.com. In the journal of stupidities you find poetry scams, part I-V, in which I wrote exactly how I dealt with it.

Interesting outcome!

Poetry On Poetry.Com
Mar 10, 2002 02:20 PM

I agree with many others in here that poetry written on poetry.com is a scam to get poems out of people without actually having to pay for them. If you want to get paid to write you should try writers markets. You can write articles for magazines, or books. I like poetry not as a try at winning some big time reward over my poems, but most of all having the opportunity to get more creative with my writing instead of being alone with it. Poetry.com gives me a chance to read other poems and flex my imagination in writing better and more poems that meet a certain punch line. I like to draw the audience into my writing like a maze and let them decide which way is out. Poetry.com will truly motivate you in writing poems, but it is not a good place to look for some get rich way out of writing. It takes allot to get cash out of writing and this is not the easy way out. Don't press your luck on contest when you know you have a talent. Go forward and find yourself the right publisher and make a start at it. One thing to keep in mind when you write is that not only is it easy to manipulate the audience, but it is also easy to lose track of what you are talking about. Writing is an art. It is up to you to find out how to use it!

Don't be fooled
Aug 11, 2001 05:10 PM

Poetry.com will accept a poem 20 lines long and everyone one I know get accepted and told they are a finalist.

They send you a draft to proof and send back and that is all fine and dandy and supposedly it goes into a book of poetry which you will never see unless you pay for the book.

Any company that is on the up and up pays you, you don't pay them.I have sent in good poetry and bad poetry to see what would happen and they all got accepted.

If you want to be accepted for publication on anything you write get yourself the latest version of writers digest in which it will tell you all the markets to sell to, prices, what they expect and so on. You can send quiery letters to some and in other cases you can just send in your work but make sure it is in the form they ask for. These are all well known places and when accepted they pay you.

Don't be discouraged if you get a rejection letter or two as we all do but if you keep trying and market what you write in the right place you will be on your way.

So don't waste your time on these places that want you to pay them.

Many of you I know from other sites are writers and already know about this. There are other online publications for writers outlets and there are some sights online to write for. Be sure you retain your copyright when writing on line and keep a hard copy. If these sights go out of business and you don't have hard copies you will lose all your work as I learned the hard way.

Don't trust this site!!
Jul 13, 2001 01:30 PM

Poetry.com is one of the biggest scams going. Send then a poem (free to enter!) it must be less than 20 lines, so that they can squeeze the larget amount of poems possible into an anthology costing around £60, that they hope the many contributors will buy, just to see a copy of their work in print! Poets are told that all poems may be entered into thier annual competition with big prize money, and then EVERY yes absolutely EVERY poem entered receives an Email informing the poet they are through to the semi-final, and guess what...the poem is going to be included in their forhtcoming anthology, if you would like to see your poem in print, please send large cheque, you can even include a short biography, just send an even larger cheque!! These people will accept ANYTHING!

It has been extensively proved by the many legitimate poetry organisations. (One even had a shopping list through to the semi-final and accepted for publication!) If you write poetry, and want to see your work in print, the best place to start is the small press magazines. Not all of these are able to pay, but even if you have to buy the magazine it will only be about £2-3. Some pay with complimentry copies, most run competitions with prize money, or have one poem each issue that is awarded money, but perhaps more importantly than that, to get published in even a small press magazine, you muct have at least some talent. The editors make informed decisions and only accept poetry they feel will enhance their magazines, so unlike poetry.coN!, you can have a real feeling of accomplishment when you look at your work in print. Therefore I request all of my friends not to trust this site. Hope you all have liked my review , PLease feel free to comment on my hinderances. Bye for now... Mann
