SMS for free in India from email
Dec 08, 2003 02:31 PM 13493 Views

Sorry for choosing wrong product for this article...i didn't find the suitable heading for this article...i requested though to MS for posting this under new ''SMS'' heading but unfortunately didnt get any positive response....anyway...

Many of the Cellular Operators in India are offering Email2mobile service. Unfortunately very few of us know it.....This article should especially b very useful for those who stay abroad and want to contact their pals on their cell in india for free from their email eg. yahoo, hotmail etc

tips on how to use-

  • check out the name of mobile service provider of your pal in india.

  • go to COMPOSE section in ur mailbox and try to keep ur message less than 150 characters(including spaces) for reliable delivery of message.

  • well for sms on cells in other countries apart from India, I’d suggest rather suggest this site https://1rstwap.com/partners/go.to/1rstwap u just need to sign up for first time that all !! but I don’t think it will b free for long...but then options keep popping up on internet..(ICQ sms' too have stopped working since quite sometime now !! )

  • I didn’t find any way to sms on bsnl,reliance,tata,mtnl....hope these guys too come up with email2sms service.

  • if somebody has any suggestion/correction or something to add. please do so in the comments section. I will try to update it on the article as soon as possible.

happy SMSing !!

I Came across this site crazyalert.com which is a portal for sending free SMS in india. it is a free service which has been provided by the company. they let us send up to 100 charcter in sms. God knows what they want to do with the remaining 60 charaters. Any way unlike few other portals. this site does deliver the sms to the recipients.

It is simple to use. Over all a good utilty for people who are into smsing a lot. They also provide with free alerts for various occasion like birthday, anniversaries, Bill reminders etc. The site is failry simple to navigate and use. I think they should have added an inbox also where I could sotre my incomming sms messages.

One of the best site to send sms to anyone in the world. It was quick and approx within 10 seconds the msg would reach to concerned person atleast in India.

Though there are many other sites for sending sms but this was undoubtedly the best and No. 1. I used extensively few months ago till it was free. Since last around 6 months they started charging in dollars. Honestly, I do not know the service today, but it should be the same and even better after they have made it paid. It should be worth trying. But one drawback is they charge to the person at the international rate of messaging directly to your inbox on this site. This results in one way communication at times.

Better than the others

In a free text panic last summer I registered for mtnsms. I found it through a search engine and used it a few times, it was handy. I was on holiday in the summer and popped into an Internet cafe to catch up on my email. There on the desktop I spotted a familiar icon... mtnsms. The cafe used Internet Explorer and there was no facility to log directly into AOL so I decided I’d send some free texts to friend’s back home using my old pal.

Basically mtnsms.com is a website for sending free text - yup free text messages. A few adverts on the homepage allow this to happen. They’re small and unobtrusive – no pop-ups! :-)

Firstly you have to register! In the olden days this was easy peasy, but at the moment the register link takes you to a partner site, so you register there and then have to work your way back to the mtnsms site before you can access you’re account. It’s not difficult, but it’s a little tedious to say the least.

The concept is very straight forward – you join, you send free text. But there IS a little more to this site! You can create a list of your friends, so that when you go to send your message you just select their name from the drop down list rather than trying to remember all your mates numbers or fiddling with your phone book! You can also pop them on a touch database. To be honest this doesn’t have any real function! You select how often you text your mate and when you’re on the site a black arrow appears next to their name to remind you to text them – as if you’d forget!

To send your text you select smsXpress from the menu at the bottom of the page, choose your mates name or pop the number in straight off. The character limit is fairly reasonable at 123 per message.

You can also choose a message ending to suit yourself.

Once your message has sent your are presented with a page which allows you to opt to send another or track the message has sent. If you choose to track it your are taken to your outbox, where the last 20 messages you have sent are stored. Next to each message there is a coloured blob and a note to tell you it’s status. The green blob denotes received, the mustard blob shows sent and the annoying burgundy blob shows it has not been sent. Occasionally messages are not sent or not received. This is due to one of two factors, the message has expired, this occurs after seven days, so maybe they left their phone turned off for ages. The other reason is allegedly an invalid mobile format, god knows what this means, I have emailed the site to ask but haven’t yet had a reply.

A wonderful little facility is your inbox! Message receivers can reply to the number you sent from e.g. your personal mtnsms number and the message will go into your inbox on the website. Very useful!

There are also a few forums where text addicts can chat and leave messages for each other – oh wow!

The site is a little basic and bright (a stunning canary yellow – not good when your hungover!) but it’s easy to navigate and use... and after all it is free so who am I to complain?

There is 5 text a day limit now, which is a bit of a pain now so I am more inclined to use genie for my pc to mobile texts. Genie texts give you the sender’s number to reply to the message but then it’s a bit fiddly, whereas with mtnsms you can reply straight away and the message will go into the senders inbox. Plus there is the added bonus of the delivery status with mtnsms. However, at the end of the day it comes down to reliability rather than all these extra niceties.

Fast and Free

This is a new site which I came across recently and would like to share with all of you. However,I think that many of my friends might already be aware of it.

What am I talking about ?

The site http://www.mtnsms.com sponsored by 'Airborn' provides free messaging messaging from your PC to your friend's mobile and any remote location. You can send as well as receive messages and yes track your messages to find out whether the person has received it.

The site is pretty simple but it has all the important functionalities it requires. 'Simple living High Thinking' is what the site is about.

The home page is pretty simple and you have to register with your mail address. Once you have registered you have the option for your PC to remember your password so that you dont have to login everytime you start your machine.

The key features of this site are:

Smsexpress

This appears in the form of two combo boxes where you can select your friends or type the mobile number and type your message in the edit box.

On typing the message you just have to click on the smiley face blindly and your message is sent instantly.

Note : Make sure you type the country code before the number if you are sending message to friends in other countries. If you are sending messages locally type in your country code before you type in the mobile number.

Friends

Well this works like the usual address book functionality. This stores all the numbers of your friends. You have got the option to manually add the numbers and email addresses and edit the numbers.

There is a touchbase functionality by which you can mark the number according to your frequency of sending messages. It will mark that number accordingly and the arrow will indicate that you need to send a message to that friend. Basically you can choose how often you would want to message your friends.

Inbox

This behaves as any other inbox but it is a simpler version of the mail system inbox. This inbox will display all the replies to your messages. You have the facility to receive the messages in your Inbox.

You have the option to save the message as a copy in your mail system.

Outbox

This feature displays all your outgoing messages.

Tracking messages

You can track your messages. Until it is received your message will be indicated with a yellow box. When the message is received, the message will be indicated with a green box.

You can delete the received messages by selecting the messages and clicking enter or clicking on the Smiley face.

Forums

You can chat with people in the forums and yes also ask TLC ( thats their customer support service ) if you have any problems. They have a forum for that too and its fun reading the replies. This person is humorous and well does a good job of replying to queries.

Moods

This is a cute feature. There is a flower with multi coloured petals at the bottom left corner of the page. You can click on any of the coloured petals according to your mood and the background will appear in the selected colour.

Advantages

It is a cool service and is pretty fast if you send one message at a time and it is free. The site loading is also pretty fast and well maintained.

Disadvantages

You can send messages only in English. There might be some problem in sending messages outside your country but I think that error will depend on your connection.

This service is best viewed in Internet Explorers. There might be some problems with other explorers

My suggestion

Stop paying for sending messages and you definitely need to try out this service if you send and receive lots of messages.. great way to send sweet nothings to your wife (husbands)/fiance(e)s/girl(boy)friends. :):)
