My early years
Like many others, I have been brought up in a typical South Indian Brahmin family where we are supposed to follow our customs but where we are not offered satisfactory answers as to why we are supposed to follow them.
And like many others being brought up in a metropolitan I have had my share of rebellion. I used to argue a lot with my mother but she could never answer me much....she has always been a "cow" - adhering to rules not understanding what it meant....
Now
Time flew by. Today after so many years.... I find that some of those customs did have reasons. Our culture was never meaningless. If we were asked to pierce our ears, there was a reason for it - acupunture. If we are asked to wear bindis, that too has reason. By putting bindi, we press our forehead which is an important nerve centre.
I have actually started respecting our tradition and wish to keep learning more on it.
While I was searching for some answers through google, I came across this wonderful site called "MAILERINDIA.COM". I have never seen a more richer site on religion. All the questions that I have been asking regarding God, regarding our culture, regarding the "WHY" of certain customs we follow has been answered there. Also, you will find Most of the shlokas and their meanings there.
I am basically a type of person who is not too orthodox to follow all the customs religiously but at the same time not so liberal to keep my mangalsutra aside. I am into software technology but still I am God fearing and find solace when I pray or go to temples.
To me, this site was like a box of chocolates given to a kid. I have still not been able to completely go through the site cos there is so much still remaining. You will find topics like vratas, their significance, meanings of the various Gods, the Dos and the Donts of many of our customs and so on and so forth. I enjoy my time when I visit this site and would recommend it to all the readers who like spiritual readings.
