Very poorly managed service
Feb 04, 2013 09:54 PM 7742 Views

In the past I have asked a few questions. I stopped once I asked one about if there is an application or method to "wake up" the power off state of monitors(power saving) when you sit down in front of the computer(ie, by detecting movement via camera or something). It sounded like a good concept, and then after one answer that had nothing to do with anything(someone posted something like "very interesting thoughts"), the question was then removed and missing when I came back to it to see if anyone else said anything. My other few questions were indeed answered before that though.

I felt it was odd it was deleted but didn't want to waste the effort of typing out detailed questions like that again with the risk of it just being removed. So I figured to pass time I'd at least answer a few others since a few of mine were indeed answered with solid answers.

Sorting through the questions that weren't posted in good faith to find properly asked questions, I only had the chance to answer about 5. These were simple questions like how to access certain features in an application(i.e., how to access a settings menu in a graphic application), or how to accomplish something in Windows. My answers were short and to the point. Another question I remember was where someone could find something online(product), and I searched for a few things and replied.

Then all of a sudden I get an email from Yahoo that my account was suspended(a true email, not one of those fake/mimic'd emails). I replied back patiently asking if there was something I have done as I assure them I haven't broken any rules or stepped on anyone toes. They answered the next day with a swift text-book answer without obviously researching the few answers/questions I have ever made, saying:

(QUOTE)

You have posted content in violation of our Community Guidelines or Yahoo! Terms of Service. As a result, your account has been suspended from Yahoo! Answers, and you will no longer be able to access this service. Community Guidelines exist to keep Yahoo! Answers a safe and useful community.

While your access to other Yahoo! services is not affected, if your account is flagged again for a Yahoo! Terms of Service violation, your account may be terminated without further notice.

(END OF QUOTE)

I tried to give it some thought and couldn't come up with a reason as I have never posted anything rude, vulgar, sarcastic, off-the-topic, spam or any form of adult-graded topics or material. I figure obviously someone must have flagged me in error or someone was abusing their flagging system. I responded with such and they had no reply. Instead they make me feel like some kind of unwanted criminal.

So at this point I have even decided to expire my usage of all Yahoo! services as that was concerning. I have been using Yahoo since the late 90's it was nothing but a search engine. Now I fear if I spend the effort to do anything anywhere else on Yahoo they will just simply delete me there as well without even asking questions.

Meanwhile, they have people posting questions that make no sense, questions that blatantly talk about private parts for kicks, answers they don't make sense, people posting rude comments about other people's answers and so much more.and that's ok. But when I respond to a tech question with a simple to understand and straight to the point answer or help someone track done a product they are having trouble finding.I'm removed from the picture without any question, research or jury.

After a decade and a half of using their services, I firmly stand on my decision to no longer use Yahoo.

STAY AWAY FROM YAHOO ANSWERS - HACKERS
Oct 17, 2012 09:15 PM 7475 Views

Just wanted to warn people - USING YAHOO ANSWERS IS NOT SAFE. I participated in Yahoo Answers Russia section and my email was hacked as a result.

Furthermore, the hacker actually threatened me using yahoo answers. Questions appeared containing my personal information - name and address. When I sent a letter to Yahoo Abuse they responded with a generic message explaining how to close my account. They did nothing to the hacker who is still active and waiting for another victim.

The site is not moderated. Using abusive language is allowed. Trolling galore. Most answers are answered by trolls. If it happened to me - it can happen to you too. Stay away.

ASK A Q IN YAHOO ANSWERS-THEY'LL DELETE ENTIRE A/C
Apr 17, 2011 01:12 AM 7642 Views

Did you just sell itself to Saudi Sheilks or pakistani moslems or irani aytollahs, after  being unable to cope up with Google better innovative products? apparently seems so .

Yahoo Answers is a moderated forum. Many other forums are moderated BUT this forum is moderated by VERY LOP SIDED MODERATORS

For abs. NO justified reason, at the WHIM OF A MODERATORS SUBJECTIVE DECISON MAKING YOU CAN LOOSE YOUR YAHOO ANSWERS A/C AS WELL AS YAHOO MAIL / STOCK EVERYTHING A/C .

e.g. you ASK A Q ON  BOOK KEEPING OR A PAINTING.SOME ONE FEELS ITS "INSULTING".THEY FLAG IT DOWN. ANSWER GETS DELETED.MODERATOR OR YAHOO ANSWERS TEAM OR WHATEVER THE HECK ITS CALLED.SENDS YOU AN AUTOMATED EMAIL TO YOUR ALTERNATE ADDRESS. FROM THIS DAY ON ALL ACCESS TO YAHOO MAIL IS DENIED BECAUSE YOU VIOLATED THE TOS OR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES. YOU APPEAL. YOU GET BACK AUTOMATED ROBOTIC RESPONSE - COPY PASTED STUFF.READ THE COMMUNITY GUIDLINES TOS YA DA YA .

THIS HAS HAPPENED  TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE ASKED THE MOST INNOCENT QUESTIONS E.G. HOW TO MAKE VEG BIRYANI( APPARENTLY SOME PEOPLE FELT THAT INSULTING BECAUSE, ALL BIRYANI'S SHD CONTAIN MUTTON)  OR HOW TO MAKE TENDER PORK( SOME ISLAMIC FUNDA. PEOPLE FEEL THAT'S INSULTING .).AND OUT GOES YOUR A/C.! BELIEVE ME .ITS HAPPENED MORE OFTEN THAN AN EXCEPTION. YAHOO IS SELF DESTROYING ITS A/C .

THIS ESP HAPPENS TO PPL WHO POST MATERIAL ON ISLAMIC TERRORISM OR ANYTHING THAT GIVES A POINT OF VIEW THAT CONFLICTS ISLAMIC THINKING. IN EFFECT YAHOO ANSWERS IS MODERATED - BY HIGHLY BIASED AND BIGOTED(ISLAMIC) RELIGIOUS FANATICS.

LIKE SOMEONE SAID .DONT MAIL WITH YAHOO ANY MORE.

YOU CAN TRY LIVE MAIL OR HOTMAIL OR GOOGLE MAIL BUT DO NOT MAIL WITH YAHOO BECAUSE THE DAY WONT BE FAR WHEN YOU WILL GET SUSPENSION NOTICE, FOR ABS. NO HECK OF A REASON.

I was  on Yahoo Answers trying to expose the link between the political  party in India called the Congress Party ( and their  mafia boss Rahul  Gandhi aka Raul Miano )  and a huge nexus of undercover agents from  pakistani ISI, whose whole and sole purpose was to use India as a money  laundering  node , profits from which are used directly for the cause of  islamic terrorism globally – afganistan (where so many US troops get  sacrificed at the mercy of  suicide bombs ) , pakistan , iran etc.

The  role of congress party politicians like Rahul Gandhi Miano , sharad  paware who are bought by islamic mafia from pakistan and saudi

EVERY TIME I GAVE FACTS AGAINST ISLAMIC TERRORISM, MF’S YA MODERATORS  DELETED MY Q IMMEDIATELY AND NOW MY YAHOO ANSWERS A/C IS SUSPENDED.

YAHOO has been policing people’s thought  process , and tramping on  our  Freedom of Speech under the guise of Community Terms and TOS nonsense.  Its challenging our basic liberty that America Stands and Fights for  till today.

PLUS , its mail service has turned third rate, off recently. In yahoo  mail classic , when you send emails ….you no longer get confirmation  that its sent. Instead there is a dull boring message “Loading…….”  …loading what….? WTF loading…

and then their email search facility has shut down. in Yahoo Mail  classic , it pretends to be there but does not do anything….in the “new  improved Yahoo mail” ..its absent.

YAHOO is no longer the innovate Yahoo it was in 2000's . Its going to  DOGS. GET off Yahoo mail…ASAP ..forward all your emails to GMAIL. Its  1000 times more efficient. Gmail search is EXCELLENT. They store emails  via threads..very easy to locate. You can make FREE PHONE CALLS via  gmail to anyone in US ( later on they might charge ) .

Gmail Labs is awesome. Yahoo looks like a piece of USED TOILET PAPER in  front of Gmail and REMEMBER YOU ARE ALWAYS SUSCEPTIBLE TO LOOSE ALL  ACCESS TO YAHOO – MAIL STOCKS ANSWERS ETC IF SOME PIN-HEADED ISLAMIC  BIGOT OF A YAHOO ANSWERS TEAM MODERATOR,  FEELS THAT , YOU  VIOLATED TO  TOS. NO FURTHER EXPLANATION IS GIVEN. COPY PASTED REPLIES IS ALL YOU  GET….SO WHY TAKE SUCH A RISK

Have you ever felt so bored with life that you have no Idea what to do? Do you have that extra pent up creative energy that you could use in putting up a blog but think that would be too much of an hassle? or do you just want to increase you knowledge and wikipedia is just not rewarding enough?

Well then look no further than Yahoo's community driven portal Yahoo! answers. Being functional for more than 2 whole years now it has finally began to take shape as a genuine forum for increasing knowledge or just ask and answer silly questions. The format is pretty nice and quite unique. the main page has all the questions that people post and expect an answer for and the whole site is divided and sub divided into categories and there are enough categories to narrow your search down and limit the number of question you might like to answer hence decluttering the screen.

BONUS: If you have a genuine question to ask or a doubt to clear you can do it with a high degree of accuracy.

Yahoo answers, a solution to your problems

Yahoo Answers goes into the social Q&A competition with one huge

advantage: it's heavily promoted elsewhere on Yahoo.com sites, which

collectively attract more visitors every day than any Web destination

except MySpace. The site, which is only one year old, has become the

second most popular reference site after Wikipedia. It has 60 million

unique users, as well as the largest collection of answers of any

Q&A site: more than 160 million as of late November 2006, up from

70 million in June 2006 . Some 60 million of those answers are in English; the rest are in a mix of world languages.

The site has a clean, attractive, and simple interface. The point

system is nothing out of the ordinary, but there is a very convenient

"My Q&A" page where users can track their points as well as the

questions they've asked and answered. One fun twist: users can choose

and customize their own cartoon( also known as an avatar) self-portraits, which appear alongside

their questions and answers and give the site a surprisingly jaunty

feel.

What is the best way to make a grilled cheese sandwich? I didn't

bother to post this question on Yahoo Answers, since the site already

contains more than 100 questions and thousands of answers relating to

grilled cheese sandwiches. I can't begin to list them all; just go to https://answers.yahoo.com and type "grilled cheese sandwich" into the "Ask tab"

1. You are hunting for some notes for that important lecture at college and you have searched all the books in the library and still haven’t found it. You have scoured the internet for hours at a stretch and still haven’t had any success. Where do you turn to?

2. Your girlfriend/boyfriend is not on talking terms with you. You have tried your level best to get him/her to talk to you. You have apologized for your behaviour and have done all possible sweet talks but it did not yield any success. What do you do now?

3. You are about to move to a new town about which you do not have any information. Lack of time does not permit you to take the trouble of personally investigate and find out more about the new town. Who do you turn to now?

4. You are planning to buy that laptop that you’ve been eyeing for the last 2 months but websites like mouthshut/epinions/etc do not provide you with proper user feedback. You are confused. What do you do now?

The answer to all these(and many other) questions is unanimous – Yahoo! Answers.

Yahoo! Answers was started on Dec 13, 2005. It allows users to ask questions and seek answers for them while at the same time it encourages the users to answer the questions posed by others as well.

It was a community created for the users of Yahoo and was modelled on the lines of Google Answers with the exception that unlike Google, Yahoo! Answers was a free service. The fact that Google Answers was a paid service meant that their community, although searchable through search engines, had a very small user base, and predominantly based in the North America and to some extent Europe as well. Google Answers has since then closed down. Yahoo! Answers on the other hand, has flourished into a popular service for its users.

Starting off with Yahoo! Answers is very simple. Sign in with your Yahoo! Id and create a public and private profile for yourself. You are allowed to choose a different screen name from the one you use in your Yahoo! Chat or Mail. There is complete protection of your privacy, you are given the options of allowing people to add you directly to messenger or to send mails to you(your email address is never revealed). You can upload your own picture or use your Yahoo avatar, the same that you use for chat and email. Now you are all set to go!

The Yahoo! Answers community has a point system and each new user is given 100 points to start with. Each question you ask on the forum takes away 5 points while each answer that you give to reply to others’ questions will fetch you 2 points. Every question is open for a limited period of time and you can post a reply to it during that period only. There is an option for extending this period if you are not satisfied with the replies you get. You will get an email alert for each answer received by your question.

Answering a question is quite simple. Just hit the answer button just below the question and post your reply. You are given a search box which you can se to search the internet using Yahoo search or Wikipedia and find the appropriate answers. You are then given a preview of the answer before it actually appears on the question page.

The more you answer, the more points you can amass. The more points you amass the higher you get on each level. In other words, Yahoo! Answers has a system of various levels with restrictions upon the number of replies you can post each day or the number of questions you can ask, depending upon the points that you have amassed. You get more privileges as you get up to higher levels.

Some may wonder what these points are for. Can they be redeemed? Well, the simple answer is No. The points are there for nothing. You can only boast of getting as many points as you have. They are displayed on your public profile as well. The most important purpose of the points system is to encourage people to be more active on the community, because of the lure of getting to a higher level and get more privileges and be promoted as one of the featured users on the Answers community blog.

Since its inception, the community has seen various new and innovative changes as well. One of them is the thumbs up or thumbs down system, using which you can promote good answers and discourage people from giving bad answers. You can even keep a watch on some questions by starring them.

A question is usually open to accept new answers for 4 days though it can be extended as well. Once you are satisfied that you have received sufficient number of answers you can put them up for voting. You can yourself choose the best answer among them and once you do that, the question is resolved and is closed. The person whose answer is chosen as the best answer earns a cool 10 points for it. So far I have posted more than 200 answers myself on this community and about 20% of them have been chosen as best answers.

A recent innovation is the creation of networks which I find quite similar to the Mouthshut Trusted Circle. You can add people who give good answers to your network and block people who give irrelevant replies.

The Yahoo Answers community has been established in many countries, including India. Country specific links can be found at the bottom of the homepage.

While there are seemingly endless number of questions and answers, one major issue with this forum is that many a times questions tend to get repeated by people who are eager to find quick replies. Therefore it is a good idea to use the search mechanism to first find out if the information you are seeking is already available on the community or not. Another criticism is that people, especially in the developed world, often use this medium as a quick fix solution to get school home work done. Often you find people saying that the first person to reply correctly will get best answer, almost as if they are conducting a quiz rather than seeking a solution. It should be avoided at all costs.

Many a times you can find celebrities and important people asking thought provoking questions. Last year our President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam also asked an open question which generated a whopping 29000 replies! Some of the people who answered the question included Dr. Kiran Bedi and Leander Paes.

As an endnote I would say that the Yahoo Answers community is good options to turn to if you want answers to some specific questions, which may involve seeking the opinion of others rather than finding out facts about a place/object/historical event/etc. This in my view is the best use of the community in a positive way.
