Ubuntu Linux Reviews

KERALA (Alleppey) India
Excellent but....
Dec 17, 2008 09:21 AM

Its really an act of humanity to all.I got Ubuntu CDs mailed for my desktop x86 machine. I appreciate their effort to distribute Ubuntu to all who like it free of cost. I like it since its an effort of many generous IT professionals and geniuses. I praise their work continuing with Ubuntu even though hundreds of other distributions are there! But the most irritating thing is that how can I get installable application packages for Ubuntu if I do not have an internet connection?

I installed it over 3 times hoping that I can substitute Ubuntu for Windows and searching for debian/rpm packages for Edgy Eft!In such as case, finding packages on internet and installing packages from source files (may not succeed) is extremely tiresome and tedious and disappointing. So however I have passion for UBUNTU, I am forced to install some other distribution that includes many needed software.

The least known wild mountain Goat

" Ubuntu " - For those people who think this sounds something like native African tribe dialect. You are right. Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

For those who are fed up with Windows but had hard luck trying out other linux favours. Ubuntu is one thing that you should try once and I bet there is no looking back.

Unlike other reviews which list out all the features available in Ubuntu I would just say one thing, There isn't anything that a normal user might not find in Ubuntu that already exists in Windows. Yeah there is one exception though you could be sure not to find the annoying security hassles and crash message that you often find in the Microsoft Operating systems. I was just amazed when the ubuntu I loaded had no hiccups recognizing the latest hardwares I attached to it. Be it a wireless router or a Canon DSLR almost all the drivers are already available and its matter of seconds before you can start using your stuff.

One of the interesting things about Ubuntu is the names it has for its releases, Ubuntu releases are also given code names, using an adjective and an animal with the same first letter.  With the exception of the first two releases, code names are in alphabetical order, allowing a quick determination of which release is newer.

Commonly, Ubuntu releases are referred to using only the adjective portion of the code name.

Ubuntu 4.10 - Warty Warthog

Ubuntu 5.04 - Hoary Hedgehog

Ubuntu 5.10 - Breezy Badger

Ubuntu 6.06 - Drapper Drake

Ubuntu 6.10 - Edgy Eft

Ubuntu 7.04 - Feisty Fawn

Ubuntu 7.10 - Gutsy Gibbon

Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron

Ubuntu 8.10 - Interpid Ibex

Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope

The ubuntu is available for download from its site ubuntu . com which you can burn into a CD and do the installation. Ubuntu also send free CD upon requesting this takes a while to arrive though.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes. And Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use.

I have the Hardy Heron Installed in my Laptop in a partition and am right now upgrading it to Interpid Ibex. Upgrading is as simple as its for installation and the intuitive update manager lets you know of upgrades and new releases as and when they arrive just as in Firefox browser. Upon your consent the upgrade is done, Since all these are for free you never need to worry about the upgrades.

Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), to be released on30th October  will be Canonical's ninth release of Ubuntu. It will be supported until April 2010. Ubuntu 8.10 has several planned new features including a new default theme (which has since been postponed again), improvements to mobile computing and desktop scalability, increased flexibility for Internet connectivity, a GUI driven Live USB creator , a guest account, an encrypted 'private' directory in each user's home directory and the inclusion of Dynamic kernel module support, a tool that allows kernel drivers to be automatically rebuilt when new kernels are released.

The desktop installation of Ubuntu 8.10 will include, among other programs, GIMP 2.4, GNOME 2.24, Mozilla Firefox 3.0, OpenOffice.org 2.4, and Pidgin 2.5. The server installation will include MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.2, Python 2.5. Ubuntu 8.10 will use Linux 2.6.27 and X.Org 7.4. Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

Master Linux Distro-Ubuntu Hardy Heron
Sep 05, 2008 02:31 AM

The best linux Distro I ever used.

Installed it over my XP and it worked rightaway.installed into the largest contiguous space in the D drive .needdn't create a partition.

. It has a clear UI with good system management features for admins. The themes and eye-candy effects are very good in this version.you will see many eye catching effects as you change the visual  details. It  has the win+tab window shifting and you can also enable the desktop cube(really cool and useful UI feature) by adding an  addon package from ubuntu package manager, which will show up as advanced desktop settings on the administration menu.

After some tweaking with that tool and installing a couple of themes.my ubuntu desktop is quite comparable to vista in terms of looks and UI capabilities. and all this in just minimal h/w requirements(dual core1.6, 512 mb ram)

Its perfect for a basic user with an older desktop who doesnt play games. I dont know about its wireless capabilities but the interface to configure wired is really better then KDE's version.

This version of ubuntu 8.04 even has LTS(long-time support) from ubuntu.com repositories to get free updates and files.

Some laptop brands like Dell vostro are giving ubuntu pre-installed these days.so I guess it must be good with the notebooks too.

Ubuntu - A real Operating System!
Apr 03, 2008 09:31 PM

It was the logo of people joining hands that catches the eye first.  As an after-thought, better than the Hats and animals around!  The next thing that caught my eye is boot from CD option. I burnt an iso image of Ubuntu on my cd and popped it in my CD drive.  Started the system - the wunderful Ubuntu Linux environment popped up on screen after necessary resources were uploded to memory.  It had most of the reqired untilities for basic system fuctions.

I was impressed and gave it 4 GB space on my Hard disk and did a complete installation of the same.  There it ran along with my windows XP. It detected all off my USB components plugged in.  The look and feel, I need not mention to anyone - reminded me of the mac os.  It looked and felt exquisite.

In the end I logged off with a good feeling. First time afer trying out a lot of Linus OS's at home.  Anyways I was back and feeling right at home with my Windows XP.  You see it takes time to get used to the ways of another operating system!  I would rate Unbuntu as tops in Linux.  Something that comes free and offers such powerful computing is worth a review for sure! Cheers.

Are You Ready for the Ubuntu ?
Nov 02, 2007 02:40 PM

African word "Ubuntu" is currently the craze in the linux world & on the search engines. Many windows users are migrating progressively to this operating system. So whats up with the ubuntu? Ubuntu is the free linux operating system with debian kernel underneath. Many debian derivatives are using "Ubuntu" kernel due to its stability & package management. It is more successful Desktop linux than fedora, mandriva, knoppix, mepis and even than its parent OS "Debian".

I'm using ubuntu since its version 4 and currently testing the released version "edge".I've heard the waves about the linux as it is not ready for the desktop yet but if you take a look at "Ubutnu" then you'll realise that ubuntu is already spreading its tentacles arround the world.Comparing ubuntu with other distribution will backfire the concept of linux. So i'm avoiding the comparison here.Every linux distro has its own good and bad sides, but all are contributing to same purpose" freedom".So let's explore the world of ubuntu.

Choosing version

In addition to Ubuntu, you can get the other 3 flavours to install.Xubuntu with xfce, Kubutnu with KDE, edubuntu for kids and also newly released gubuntu.Choosing out of them can't be easy as every window manager has its own benefits.Ubutnuforums suggests newbies to install ubutnu first then later add more window managers from repositories, if required.

Getting ubuntu

Ubuntu is 100% free of cost operating system. You can request free cds from shipit Or even downaload the DVD image for yourself. If you request Free CD from shipit then you'll able to run the OS from and within the disk and also use the same disk for the OS installation.

Installtion

Ubuntu is improved on it's installation part as previous installers (5.04-6.04) were command-line(Codenamed "Woody" for debian).New version has guided interface, that'll ease few things out.If you're unsure about paritioning then you should take a look at resources mentioned at end of this article. Also be patient while ubuntu installs.

Bundled Application

Ubuntu is packed up with almost every alternative windows application that you get by default on windows.Ubuntu includes the Evolution email client and Firefox Web browser, the OpenOffice.org office productivity suite, various multimedia applications, and a full suite of accessories, small games, and system configuration utilities.Ubuntu has reputation for better driver support than other debian derivatives. With "Synaptic" you can install more softwares from cds or even repositories on the internet. Repositories are like online update you find in windows but with more options and multiple resources.Like windows you can get add/remove program that will install add/remove software for you.Sometimes in new releases you may find some previously installed software missing, it might be due to restrictive licensing policies.

i18n

Ubuntu supports wide range of languages. We have a lot of languge translators at launchpad, working hard to translate every application that comes with ubuntu. To select your languge click System > Administration > Language Selector. You'll able to use ubuntu in your own language.

Getting Help

To get help for system related components, hit lifesaver icon on the system tray. It'll open up the ubuntu help system, from there you can get your answers for most frequent problems. At ubuntuforums.org Alternative ways to get help is to check the various blogs maintained by ubuntuforums users. If you want to get in touch with the develoeprs or want to know the happpenings of ubuntu world the you must consult the list https://lists.ubuntu.com/ .For official documentation check out the wiki pages https://wiki.ubuntu.com .

Why ubuntu?

When you consider that many computer users really just need an email client, Web browser, and maybe a word processor or even media player, you can see where a no-cost solution like ubuntu starts to make sense. So if we consider these type of desktop users then ubuntu is much better option over windows. For intermediate users or even developers, they get more appreciation and recognition, rewards for their work under linux than in windows. At last, If you badly need your windows application in linux then you can try win4lin or winehq can be useful to use windows application inside linux.Almost every Vista GUI effects and features are released for linux window managers 2-year earlier than vista released, so you loose nothing if you switch to linux. In short don't listen to rumours of windows fans and ignore linux, give it a try.Trust me you won't be dissapointed. To know how much you can trust windows in futur.

Linux for Human Beings
Oct 06, 2005 11:52 AM

This article is meant for computer hobbyists, especially those interested in linux. Those people who have not used linux before may find this article difficult to follow. In case you are interested in linux and don't know how to use it, feel free to contact me.

If you use computer as a hobby instead of being forced to use it for your job, you must have heard about linux.

There are many ''flavours'' of linux. The most popular flavours in india are Fedora, Suse, Mandrake and Debian. Debian Linux , also known as ''the mother of all linuxes'' is a HUGE OS. The current version comes on 14 cd's. Fedora Suse etc all come in 3+ cd's

They are a nightmare to configure and install, eat up lots of space and contain bloatware ( yes even linux is getting this problem now.)

This is where Ubuntu Linux comes in. IT IS THE MOST DOWNLOADED LINUX CURRENTLY (according to distrowatch.com)

Salient Features

1) Single CD - aka Windows. You just pop one cd in, install everything and you still have (almost) all the things that you would normally require. (More on the multimedia stuff later)

2) Ease of use - Although the installation is text based, it is easier than debian or many other such installers. Also, there is no need to swap cd's during the installation.

3) Terrific Support- Ubuntu is completely FREE, but has better tech support than windows. Please dont expect support via telephone, but otherwise you will find 1000s of people willing to help you via email, forums and live chat.

4) Has a live-cd version- Want to try out Ubuntu without going through the fuss of installing it first? Download the live cd. It's a lovely thing: Pop the cd in, boot your computer and you are in Linux. Take the cd out , reboot, and you're back in windows or whatever OS you where using.

5) Terrific Package Management- Want to install that piece of software? Go to Synaptic Package Manger, search for the software you want to install and click yes. It will download it from cyberspace and install it for you with the correct settings!

Ubuntu uses the apt package management system, borrowed from Debian.

The lame-duck equivalent of Synaptic on windows would be the ''Add/Remove Programs'' in Windows. However Synaptic is far more capable, faster and easy to use.

6) Huge software respository- You'll never have to install any package by compiling it from source code. You can even use Debian's software repository.

7) Very Good Security- Logging in via root is disabled by default! you have to login using a normal account and use ''sudo'' to accomplish all system administration tasks. It is very difficult to make some stupid mistakes with your OS in Ubuntu.

8) Excellent Hardware Recognition- I have personally installed Ubuntu on over 20 different machines , and on all of them Ubuntu has detected the hardware and installed the correct drivers automatically. there's no need to go driver-hunting like in windows.

9) ITS FREE- You dont have to install any cracks, or pay anybody. Its also not the ''lite'' or the ''personal'' version. Its the full-blown stable OS, with all the features.

Drawbacks

1) No mp3s, no video, no DVD- support for all these format are disabled by dDamn Smallefault (due to licensing restrictions). You can of course enable it, but you need to have internet access.

2) Net is required.- for those pc's without internet access, Ubuntu is not very useful. you require the net to get new software, security updates, patches etc.

Suitability

1) For office use (as workstation) - EXCELLENT

2) For Home use (watching movies, playing games, doing homework, and browsing the net) - VERY GOOD, but some amount of familiarity with linux required

3) For use as Departmental / SOHO servers: EXCELLENT

Verdict

Download and use it if you are familiar with linux, especially debian. You are guaranteed to love it. If you are a first -time linux user, I would recommend Fedora or Mandriva. You can also try the live-cd of Ubuntu, to get a hang of it.
