ZNMD is a movie which gives two simple yet powerful messages that
1)Life should not only be lived, but it should be celebrated.
2)Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear –not absence of fear.
I was looking forward to watch this movie because the Promos looked quite appealing to me(mainly due to its fresh casting) & also I had liked Zoya Akhtar’s first film - Luck By Chance.
ZNMD kick starts with Abhay Deol getting engaged to Kalki Koechlin. Before getting married Abhay Deol decides to celebrate his Bachelor's party with his two best friends in Spain - Farhan Akhtar (A copywriter in an Advertising Firm & in pursuit to meet his Biological Father) and Hrithik Roshan (A successful financial Broker whose only Aim in Life is to make Plenty of Money & get retire at 40). However Abhay Deol finds it difficult to convince both of them initially as in the past Farhan Akhtar has fallen in love with Hrithik’s girlfriend and also Hrithik is busy with his project but finally Abhay Deol convinces both of them and thus begins their Adventurous road journey which changes their lives forever.
Their first adventure is Underwater diving which Hrithik is afraid of doing but under the guidance of their instructor Katrina Kaif he does it. The adventure is beautifully shot. In the process Hrithik and Katrina who plays a short yet powerful role fall in love with each other.
Their second adventure is Skydiving which Farhan is afraid of doing but eventually does it.
Their Third and Final adventure is the **Bull Sport and it turns out to be one of the highlights of the film.
Strengths of ZNMD:-
~ Top Notch Direction, Excellent Cinematography(It’s a visual treat to see all the locations of Spain so beautifully shot especially all the Adventures)
~ Excellent Performances by the Starcast.
~All the three main central characters are given equal weightage.All the roles are well defined which includes Naseeruddin Shah’s cameo.
~Refreshing Music & the Climax
~Narration of the scenes in the background in Farhan’s Voice through beautiful Poems and Shayaris is Top Class & Heart touching.
Weakness of ZNMD:-
~Talented Actress of Deepti Naval’s caliber is simply wasted in the movie
~The movie paces slowly and appears dull in the 2nd Half and doesn’t maintain the same excitement level throughout.
~Abhay Deol’s telling Hrithik and Farhan at the end that he loves Kalki but doesn’t want to get married to her now is contradictory to the first scene and does not completely justifies what exactly he wants.
Performances:-
~ Abhay Deol’s is Lovable & Specially his Act in Playing Pranks on others, Farhan Akhtar’s looks supercool with his spontaneity(specially his tongue in cheek monologue & flirtatious nature and funny dialogues), Hrithik Roshan’s is refreshing which showcases him in an Ambitious Avatar to be Successful. Katrina Kaif looks stunning throughout but can’t say the same about her acting.She had a short yet powerful role but she was okay in it though she could have done it much better.She needs to still work on her expressions.Kalki was okay as an over-possessive would be wife.
Some of the Highlights of the Movie:-
~Picturization of the song “Dil jaise dhadke dhadakne do” where Abhay, Hrithik and Farhan pack their bags to leave for Spain, “Senorita” and “Ik Junoon” –Tomatina Song highlights the culture of Spain beautifully.
~Scene where Hrithik repetitively says “Ye bhi likha tha” & Kalki sees Abhay holding Katrina is hilarious.Also the scene where Kalki sings an English song is fun.
~All the adventure scenes – It’s brilliantly shot.
~The Narration of the scenes with Beautiful Poems and Shayaris in Farhan’s voice in the background.
~Naseeruddin Shah’s and Farhan Akhtar’s scene is beautifully shown
~Scene when Hrithik cries after performing Under Water Diving is brilliant.
My Rating & Verdict:
~Among the Movies that I have seen until now in 2011, ZNMD is the Best
~My Rating: 4/5
~ This movie reminded me with its visual demonstration, SRK’s immortal lines from Kal Ho na Ho, “Aaj…Aaj ek haseen aur baant loon…Aaj ek dua aur mang loon…Aaj ek aansoo aur pee loon…Aaj ek zindagi aur ji loon…Aaj ek sapna aur dekh loon…Aaj…Kya pata, Kal ho na ho!
~ Don’t miss this movie at any cost kyuki Aisi film milegi Na dobara.
