Pritam does it again !!. Review on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Songs

Wow, wow, wow!! Here he comes again......with some of the awesome-est songs ever made!! Really, after last year's intoxicating Cocktail soundtracks and the simply heart-touching songs of Barfi!, I never had imagined Pritam could make better songs. But he's done it again, made some spectacular songs and I don't care whether he's been "inspired" by other songs - nothing else matters but just the fact that this album is one among those, in which Pritam is at his best!!

Though, of course none of the songs other than Badtameez Dil and Balam Pichkari could create the magic the first two songs did. I should also mention here that when I’m talking of the album as a whole, my review will be largely influenced by these two songs and the flaws or shortcomings in the other songs may be slightly overlooked. But no worries, I've reviewed each song here separately. The music is fantastic and the lyrics (written by Amitabh Bhattyacharya), though not making much of sense are still fun to hear. The singers are fabulous and put all the more life and joy into the songs.

The songs –

(1) Badtameez Dil (Benny Dayal, Shefali Alvares): The first song released of the album and oh! What a song! The song has energy, great music, foot-tapping rhythm and fabulous singers. The lyrics are a pack of gibberish sung wonderfully by Benny Dayal and it’s really funny to hear it. This song can get anybody into a dancing mood and is sure to rock dance floors in coming days. The female part of the song (sung by Shefali Alvares) is good too but Benny Dayal clearly overshadows her lines in the song.

Chikna kameena dekha

Chaand ne cheater hoke cheat kiya toh

(2) Balam Pichkari (Vishal Dadlani, Shalmali Kholgade): The best song (according to me) of this album! It has this I-am-feeling-crazy feel to it, the perfect song to dance upon and the music is just fabulous!! The singers are another highlight of the song – Vishal has all the naughtiness the song requires and Shalmali has done a good job too. Though the lyrics don’t make much sense, this song overall is a perfect 10.

To lattoo padosan ki bhabhi ho gayi……….? (What does that mean?)

(3) Dilliwali Girlfriend (Arjit Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan): OK….so this is where the album starts degrading slightly. Don’t get me wrong – this song is nice, has a catchy tune and I love the singers’ work. It’s only that after hearing the first two songs, the expectations set by Pritam are so high, that you by default expect the other songs to be as fabulous as them. And still, this song reaches nowhere near either Badtameez Dil or Balam Pichkari. Arijit Singh, after the widely famous Tum Hi Ho, has come out with a totally different type of song and it’s hard to believe that it’s him when you first hear the song. Sunidhi, as usual, is a rockstar!!

(4) Illahi (Mohit Chauhan): This song is beautiful. Unlike the other three songs, this song isn't exactly the to-dance-on type songs – and neither is it one of those slow-paced romantic ones. It has got a breezy air about it and I so LOVE Mohit Chauhan’s voice in the song. The lyrics are good and so is the music, it’s actually better than Dilliwali Girlfriend.

(5) Kabira (Rekha Bhardwaj, Tochi Raina): This, I am assuming is the “tragic song” of the movie (most movies of the type have one of a kind). So, to be honest – nope. Not that good a song. Average, so-so types and doesn’t give you that sad-sad feeling which such songs are known to create. The singers aren’t much commendable either. Overall, not worthy to be heard more than once. The second version (sung by Arijit Singh and Harshdeep Kaur) is slightly better than the first one.

(6) Subhanallah (Sreeram, Shilpa Rao): This is another beautiful song and falls more in the category of the “romantic love songs”. I love the music of this song – it’s soothing and wonderful to hear. But the best part is Sreeram. What a voice and what singing! No restraints, no nothing – he has got a fresh and soothing voice, everything is perfect but……..what goes wrong?? Shilpa Rao. This song just so doesn't work for her. Thankfully, she doesn't have much part in the song. But overall this song is just awesome and I recommend this to everyone.

(7) Ghagra (Vishal Dadlani, Rekha Bhardwaj): Ok……..so, this song just doesn't work out. I don’t know what Pritam wanted it to be, but really…..I didn't even listen to the whole song – I stopped it in between. But what really spoiled the song is Rekha Bhardwaj’s voice. I don’t know why Pritam couldn’t take some other singer, maybe the song would've worked then. Vishal tries his best to somehow handle the song single-handedly but fails miserably due to Rekha Bhardwaj. Strict no-no to everyone.

So, overall, a brilliant album with two mind-blowing songs. Other songs were good too but some failed miserably. I think, looking through all aspects, the music, lyrics and singers – each had their own moments to shine but then, each also made serious blunders due to which some people may not be very pleased. For me, other than Kabira and Ghagra, all the songs were splendid and I’m all praises for this album.
