The most awaited movie of the year - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Since the trailers came out, all one could think about was this movie. People became crazy watching the promo and once the music came out, this movie was like some sort of frenzy. Everyone had high expectations, everyone knew for sure that this movie was gonna rock the box office. And who wouldn't.....with such an awesome star-cast, some really brilliant tracks and a promising trailer ??
So it was with high, really high expectations that I sat for this movie yesterday afternoon - and what came out as a result was a strictly average movie wounded around a faltering plot. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying hat the movie is bad, but now I know - as one should never judge a book by its cover, similarly - Never judge a movie by it trailer.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE PLOT.....??
The plot...?? Really, how can someone expect the director of Wake Up Sid! (Ayan Mukherjee) to make a movie on such a common plot...?? Studious girl meets cool boy, falls for him, the cool boy has to care for his cool-dude attitude and not for the girl, then later he falls for girl also and all is well that ends well!! There was hardly any surprise element or a moment of unpredictability in the movie. A long 159 minutes, this movie drags on with deathly slowness with a boring and predictable plot, and to be very frank, doesn't leave you satisfied.
There are mainly three things shown in the movie :- The trek (which also portrays their friendship), Ranbir's job and marriage.
1st Half:
The trek (and their friendship): . Naina (Deepika Padukone) is currently studying medical and meets Kabir a.k.a. Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) and his two best friends Avi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) while going on a trek to Manali. She joins them and the movie has a fun-filled start. Trekking, some cheap flirting, laughter and beautiful Manali keeps you engaged for the 1st half. Also, Naina falls for Bunny but doesn't succeed in declaring her love. In the end of the 1st half, Bunny gets a scholarship at some University in Chicago. So, he leaves and with him leaves the till now entertaining movie.
2nd Half :
Ranbir's job: Bunny here is basically a guy who loves traveling and thus, also loves his job which requires a lot of going around the world. Due to this, a certain distance is created between his family and friends in India and himself. This distance is soon covered when he is called back to India to attend Aditi's wedding.
The wedding: From here on, the whole movie takes place during the wedding. Certainly the longest wedding in history! - this movie drags on for so long that in the end, I was literally itching to get out of my seat and leave the hall. Unnecessary scenes, stupid dialogues, some not-so-funny jokes is what makes the 2nd half a real let-down. The story here is simple enough - Bunny comes back to India, meets the suddenly changed from spectacles-to-sexy Naina and with time, falls in love with her. Naina isn't ready to accept Bunny as she has her clinic and living with Bunny (and being always on the move) would never suit her. So, Bunny decides to leave but finally comes back for her.
The story remains simple enough but the director has gone ahead and made it such a long movie. If they had wanted to make such a long movie, they could've added more story and shown something new. But no, the same old story added with extra melodrama.
The only things which saved the movie from being a complete disaster are the cast performance, the music and the direction.
Cast performance : So, Ranbir and Deepika, the hot ex-couple back again on big screen....?? And oh! what a sizzling couple!! Lovely chemistry, really awesome acting by Ranbir Kapoor and he has proved himself a rockstar yet again!!
Ranbir plays the role he's best at - the cute, super-cool and flirtatious chocolate boy. His cute expressions, some seriously good acting keep you glued to the screen for a considerable amount of time.
Deepika looks really cute with those specks and gives a brilliant performance as the the studious Naina, and the changed, matured one in the 2nd half.
Kalki Koechlin plays her part wonderfully - the tomboy, who has a crush on Avi. Even the parts where she is half-drunk are done beautifully. I just wish she had some more role in the movie.
Aditya Roy Kapoor has given a good performance too though I thing the other three were better.
Music: Everyone has heard the tracks and knows what I'm talking about. For more, you can read my review on the songs here : https://mouthshut.com/review/Yeh-Jawaani-Hai-Deewani-Songs-review-nnptlmmlrr
Personally I don't like Ghagra much but hey! there's Madhuri in it! She dances beautifully and this is another thing to watch out for in the movie.
But yet, I would say don't waste your money in watching this film - it's not worth it. And even if you go, don't keep your hopes because you will be disappointed. The movie doesn't provide us with anything new. It's not bad, but it's not something good either. There is no really special thing for you to watch in this movie.
If you're a Ranbir fan, then definitely you won't be disappointed but other than that - no need to watch this movie. A one-time watch (actually, I had difficulty even watching it for 1st time) YJHD fails to meet up with our expectations.
My rating : 2.5/5
