After a series of good comedies in 2007, Aneez Bazmee adds his'Welcome' to the list. And to add, he gives out the weakest. yes, The weakest comedy of 2007.
Welcome has opened at overwhelming response through out the country due to its star value and the big bucks spent on its promotion and publicity, and is expected to take out its budget value which is approx. 12 Crores in the first week itself.
*Story:
To be frank, The story has nothing new to offer, same old concept of confusions, misundrstandings, helluva chases, senseless jokes and most of all The Paresh - Akshay duo.
Dr. Ghungroo [Paresh] has gained enough in life. The only thing he wishes to do before dying is get his nephew Rajeev [Akshay] married to such a girl, whose family has never been invloved in the smallest of criminal activities and they haven't seen a Police Station in there whole life. Now, Ghungroo in order to find such people, accidently finds Uday Shetty [Nana Patekar] who is one of the biggest mobsters of Dubai, mistaking his personality of a corporate worker, he agrees to marry his nephew to Uday's sister **Sanjana [Katrina Kaif].
Majnoo Bhai [Anil Kapoor] is a'Hafta Vasooli' guy, who keeps on collecting'Khokas' and if he does not succeed in taking them out, he gets busy in killing the non-payers.
Rajeev who is an auctioner, falls in love with Sanjana at the very first sight in a burning mall. [
The procedure of mall being on fire is so stupid that you can't help sayin'sh*t man'!]
Soon, Ghungroo gets to know about Uday's reality. And he becomes all set to refuse the offer. After some helluva confusion of families, who love's who? who is he? Both the families agree to get Sanjana and Rajeev married. On the day of engagement, The story takes an absolute U-turn when Ishika [Mallika Sherawat] enters into the scene, and claims to be Rajeev's already wedded wife. RDX [Feroz Khan] here takes the decision, who gets to keep Rajeev and who does not.
Who is Ishika? Is she really married to Rajeev? Why is she doing this? Who is making her do it?
*Well, Lots of confusion?. Want to find out?. If yes, then you will have to watch Welcome. Instead let these questions be unanswered and you will be happier.
Direction: Aweful. Is this the sameAneez Bazmee who gave'No Entry'?. If yes, then this guy has lost his comic timing somwhere in an ocean. Direction of the movie is so bad, that you can make out'Man, Locations Dubai, Sets Mumbai'. The special effects used are so dead!. you can spot better of those on kids soaps and serials. The story telling is not at all stylish, and keeps on looking low budget all the time, Not expected from a Nadiadwala venture, Atleast I always thought, they are the ones who spend most of the money on'Grand Sets'.
Performances:Akshay Kumar is decent, not in form. Katrina is fine. Paresh is equally compairable.
The show stealers are Nana and Anil. They really perform well, Nana in his one liners is superb. Anil Kapoor has a super accent, makes you smile when you hear him speak. Mallika is apt. Now the never ending cast has Vijay Raaz, Supriya Karnik, Feroz Khan, Snehal Dhabi, Adi Irani, Mushtaq Khan, Sherveer Vakil etc are good but only add more n more confusion to the lot. Suniel Shetty, useless guest appearance.
Positives: Performances of Anil and Nana. The movie makes you laugh in parts.
Negatives: Bad cinemetography except for the climax. Story absolutely senseless. Characterisation too legnthy, none of the characters are described nicely. Many scenes remain incomplete, start, half way pause, scene change. [For eg. The steering breaking scene, aweful]. Songs are the major disadvantage, end credits track is the ONLY hummable track. Most of the humor in the film has a double meaning and same jokes are repeated over and over again.
Overall^. Welcome is an absolute mass materialistic entertainer which is definitely worth a miss for your 200 bucks. Instead go watch Taare Zameen Par, installed at the very next screen.
