Some movies entertains you, Some Inspires you, Some touches your heart & Some teaches you to Stand Up and Do Something. SWADES is one of the rarest movies that is very necessary to be seen as it evokes a feeling of giving something back to the society and thereby the country that has given you so much.

Swades for me should be seen by All Indians & specially the NRI’s. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker of the super hit Lagaan & Jodha Akbar fame, this movie touched my heart instantly and since then made an everlasting impact in my mind.

The film starts with the character of Mohan Bhargava (Played by Shah Rukh Khan) who works as a Project Engineer in NASA, USA.He decides to return to India to trace his childhood nanny, Kaveriamma (Kishori Balal**) so that he can bring her back to USA and stay with him. He traces her down to Charanpur; a remote village in U.P. Mohan finds himself in a world that stands as the polar opposite to his American lifestyle.

Within this glum paradigm, Gita (Gayatri Joshi) toils hard, teaching at the local school, hoping to create some sort of change for the better. Meanwhile Kaveriamma ponders over Mohan’s request that she go to America with him. Gita stands as the lone hindrance, refusing to let go of the lady who was also a mother figure to her.

In a desperate attempt to force a solution, Kaveriamma assigns Mohan a simple task - to collect overdue rent from a poor farmer who has leased Gita’s land.

Thus starts the journey of realization & self actualization which alters Mohan’s relationship to this world of passive people who yearn for a leader to initiate a progressive step. Mohan decides to lead these neglected people in a simple battle against disunity and dependency, with the sole aim of powering a light bulb.

The highlight of the movie is the Simplicity and the Performances by All. Shah Rukh Khan delivers a powerful performance and is a treat to watch. I am not a SRK fan but for me in terms of his performance as an actor I would rate Swades as his best followed by Chak de India. I loved the character of Gita played by the debutant Gayatri Joshi as she inspires Mohan through her own example, to lead and create change.Dayashankar Pandey stands out as Mela Ram, the local chef who dreams of opening dhabas on American freeways, but eventually helps Mohan realize that one needs to “light the lamp” in his own house before lighting up the neighbor’s.

Highlight of the Movie:-

~ Brilliant Story Telling & Direction

~ Simple Interpretation with Excellent music by A.R.Rahman (Yeh jo Desh hai tera, Swades hai tera my personal favourite)

Swades” must be seen by every Indian, not to be educated about his or her country’s problems, but rather to be reminded about a responsibility to act and make a difference. Patriotism has a new face.
