Located on the most crowded roads of Bhendi Bazaar is a restaurant, that's got food to serve one and all, The Shalimar Restaurant! It is one of the finest restaurants of South Bombay, serving veg and non-veg food, perfect ambiance and hygienic and tasty food, what more to ask for?
I stay at Santacruz, but my maternal family resides near Bhendi Bazaar area. I visit my granny's place once in two weeks and there is not a single time I miss on going to Shalimar. My cousins and me go there either for lunch or dinner or just to eat my most favourite Chicken Shawarma. Sometimes our "youngsters ka toli" is joined by elders also.
About the food-
Shalimar Restaurant serves a vast variety of tasty and hygienic food, both veg and non-veg.
Moughlai- The Moughlai food is the specialty of Shalimar Restaurant. They claim that their guests have all the rights to be as demanding as the Moughals. They also claim that they grind their own masalas so that they have a distinct taste and flavor for their food.
Non-veg- The non-veg Moughlai food of Shalimar is cooked well in combinations of variety of spices, that make it very tasty and mouthwatering. My favorite dishes are chicken patyala and chicken tikka masala.
Veg- as compared to the non-veg the veg Moughlai food is not as tasty.
Chinese- Though Moughlai food is Shalimar's speciality , but it also serves an array of savory Chinese dishes.
Non-veg- I love the American choupsey, it tastes amazing and definitely satisfies the taste buds well. The chicken chilli and hakka noodles also leave you asking for more. I don't like the chicken fried rice, it does not have any taste.
Veg- I have not tasted any veg Chinese dish from Shalimar.
Fast Food-
Shalimar serves delicious Fast Food as well. It has a wide range of pizzas, burgers and shawarmas.
Non-veg- The pizzas are tasty and filling albeit not like the canonical Pizza hut or Dominos. The burgers are not at all good.
Veg- I find the non-veg fast food more tasty than veg, but my mumma likes veg in this section.
Chaat-
Shalimar does not stay behind in this one also. There is a vast variety of Chaats on the menu. My most favorite is Basket Chaat. It is a dainty potato basket filled with crunchy mixture of 'sev', topped with 'imli' chutney, green chutney and curd. It tastes awesome and is very filling also. I love it!
Desserts-
Shalimar offers a huge range of desserts, like rasgulla, rasmalai, varieties of ice-creams, falooda rabdi, shahi tukda and many more. I like all these desserts at Shalimar they are made and garnished very well.
Ambiance-
Ambiance is good, making it suitable for friends and family. Shalimar covers a huge space of Bhendi Bazaar area. The entire restaurant is divided into sections which are named as White House,
Dastarkhan, there is also a huge waiting area and a general eating space within in AC and Non-AC. There are also separate party halls. Dastarkhan is the best part of the restaurant. This section is divided into compartments where we can sit with our family in isolation. Basically, this section is divided into big and small rooms, where one family or one group of friends can eat at a time.
Flaws about the ambiance is that is that in spite of such a huge area under it, the place becomes very crowded and noisy. There is no proper parking space outside the restaurant.
Service-
The service is poor and very slow. If we want something the waiters have to be reminded again and again. No doubt the place gets crowded even on the week days.
Shalimar also offers parcel facility with the help of which we enjoy its delicious food at home also. Again here, the service is extremely slow. We have to order at least an hour before we are actually hungry. One more flaw here is that they don't deliver fast food at home on weekends.
Shalimar also caters food for parties, get to gathers or marriages, with no compromise in the taste.
Costs-
It is the best restaurant in its area, no doubt the price are on the higher side. But if we want to enjoy tasty and hygienic food price should not matter.
Goods-
1) Hygienic and tasty food.
2) Vast variety of food to select from.
3) Food is very well garnished.
4) Quantity of the food is also filling.
5) Ambiance is good.
6) Thumps up to the dastarkhan section.
Bad-
1) Veg food is not as tasty as non-veg.
2) Very slow service.
3) No parking place
Overall-
Nice place to go with friends and family. Taste of the food with the hygiene level is perfect. In spite of some of its flaws we enjoy being here because of the quality and quantity of the food. Nice place to be at. A thumbs up to this place!
