In this country, Sachin Tendulkar as a topic creates more passion than issues on poverty, corruption and crime put together. Nevertheless, people like me still indulge in this discussion.

Coming to the point, let us look at 4 best batsmen of this era who have dominated bowling all over the world without any execption for the last 10 years or so. They would be Sachin, Lara, Ponting and Inzamam. Five years back, Sachin would have been No 1, Lara No 2, Inzamam No 3 and Ponting at No 4. Now, I think the order should be Lara No 1, Ponting No 2, Inzamam No 3 and Sachin No 4 (here I am not talking about Rahul or Mohammed Yusuf and restricting the discussion on these 4).

Here is my reasoning. Lara is leading a not so good team with few players of international class and leading from front with scoring great runs and what more getting his team to win. Batting is not just about scoring runs, but helping the team to win. Lara scores all the points. Ponting on the other hand has gone strength to strength closing in on Sachin's records. The only reason he is behind Lara is that Ponting is leading a team full of talented match winners and his contributions are often under valued. Third in place, Inzamam is probably the best batsman against fast bowling is at best a sleeping giant. He is scoring runs in tons and is behind Ponting simply because of his contribution in winning the games.

Now the big question of Sachin. Unfortunately, he is neither scoring runs like Ponting or winning matches like Lara. I always got a feeling that all the great innings Sacin played are to prove a point or two. He also appears that he is running out of ideas and surprisingly for such a master, he is absolutely low on confidence so much so that he got out more than one occassion trying to leave the ball out side his off stump. Getting out playing a ball out side the off stump is lack of application, rashness, arrogance or what ever you call it, but getting out leaving the ball is sheer lack of confidence.

Now the answer, can he retire being the greatest, I doubt so. Not too many brilliant players actually retired with people wanting them to continue. One can look at Kapil Dev and most recently Steve Waugh. Sachin can only retire as the greatest if he can bat half as much as did in 96-2000.

The greatest ever in any sport discipline have retired when they are being regarded as the greatest...not when they were regarded as the greatest.......
