Hi,

?This is Mrs Punitha A. I'd been going to rainbow childrens hospital, bannergatta road( Hospital where expecting mothers, infants, toddlers and kids visit) since my 7th week of pregnancy, where I was consulting gynecologist Dr Geetha Belliappa. As advised by my gynecologist I've gone through all the blood tests, scanning in the timely due and the reports stated everything is fine. In the last scan which was done 3 weeks before delivery the weight of the baby was 3.1 kg and stated that estimated weight after the delivery would be 400 grams more. On October 31st by 1 a.m I started experiencing labor pains and arrived to hospital at 6 a.m. I was shifted to labor room at 8:30 a.m. I was given epidural as it was a very long labor and by 12 p.m Dr Geetha came to labor room, pains were extreme and my delivery was nearing. I was told to push as much as possible, I tried pushing very hard putting all my energy which went in vain. But then I still tried and also the doctor used vaccum and forceps to get my baby out. Finally my beautiful baby daughter weighing 3.46 kg arrived at 12:35 p.m. My husband was called to see the baby who was so over whelmed seeing her, it was moment of joy though I was in pain getting my stitches. I was told to rest. Me and my baby were left in the labor room without any staff. After I could urinate without any difficulty I could get out of the labor room. It was 2:30 p.m, yet none of the staff arrived to help me get out of the bed. After 10 minutes of shouting there comes one nurse and told me her duty is over she would send the nurse who works in the that time shift. I was out of the labor room at 3 p. m. My whole family was so eagerly waiting to see her, they were so happy seeing? her, I wish that moment would be freezed there. I was shifted to ward. Parents, in laws, friends, relatives started coming to see the baby. Husband and parents were happy, sharing the news with friends and relatives. Me, my husband and mother in law stayed back in d hospital as I was supposed to be discharged 2 days later. My mother in law very keenly observed the baby's movements, activities. She told that she hasn't noticed the baby moving her left hand. Me and my husband were like nothing like that, if anything doctors would have informed and told her not to worry. We were assigned a pediatrician Dr Altaf Jameel Pasha, who came for rounds, checked the baby and told the baby is fine. Around 11 p.m the baby started crying as she could not get enough breast milk. So the nurse took the baby to formula feed and told they would keep her in ICU for few hours for observation if she's crying for any other reason. That was the only night I slept peacefully after my delivery. On Nov 1st early morning by 5 a.m got my baby back to the ward. Around 8 a.m Dr Altaf came for rounds and checked the baby, told the baby is fine. My mother in law asked the doctor why the baby is not moving her left hand. And the doctors reply was' yes, I've noticed it when she was in ICU last night. But I thought of not telling you, so that you might panic. She is affected with a syndrome called erbs Palsy( affected hand remains paralyzed if not treated early). Since the baby was weighing more, delivery was not easy, doctors had to pull her and while pulling her nerves are stretched, damaged or might be torn also". I wonder how irresponsible a doctor more over a pediatrician can be for not informing the syndrome cos we might panic. What if my mother in law had left the baby's hand unnoticed? Dr Altaf would not have told us her condition at all which would have lead to permanent deformity of the hand. We were left in that confused state not knowing what exactly has happened to the baby, what should be done for recovery. No doctor came and diagnosed. Immediate physiotherapy was required, the saddest part is there were no physiotherapists in the most famous hospital. Most of the ladies think delivering a baby normally is God's gift, treat normal delivery as a boon. But in my case I felt I was cursed to deliver normally after seeing my baby's hand deformity. Happiness didn't last even for a day. The late growth scan itself stated that the baby would weigh around 3.5 kg, if that weight of my baby was difficult to deliver normally I was ready for a C-section. I had not denied a C- section nor had forced her for normal delivery. Dr Geetha after delivery didn't come for my post partum rounds for the entire day, called her from the hospital and informed the situation. Yet I was left unattended in the hospital. The baby was not even given a bath, left undiagnosed. Next day i.e on November 2nd Dr Geetha was in the hospital early morning, but again left unattended. If not the treatment part from her side, we were expecting the moral support atleast. Which proves the irresponsibility again. It was the nerve that was damaged for the baby, a neurosurgeon was supposed to be suggested to us. Instead we were suggested to consult an orthopedic doctor which is meaningless. And it was supposed to be my discharge on the same day. My husband was called for the discharge procedures, he told that he would pay the bill only if the baby is diagnosed and cured. But we were left helpless as he had signed the terms and conditions as per the hospital administration rules which stated that hospital or the staff is not responsible for anything. It was 7:30 p.m I was getting ready for the discharge cursing my fate and finally Dr Geetha made her mind to visit me. Then I got a discharge summary, Which stated that baby is mildly affected with jaundice for which she has to visit the hospital again on November 4th. It was November 4th and we went to hospital, Dr. Altaf insisted the nurse to check bilirubin level in the jaundice meter. It was 15.6 which would eventually reduce. He prescribed a blood test as well and we got it done. Tey took a syringe full of baby's blood. We were told to visit again next day. Most of my relatives told tat most of the new born babies are jaundice affected and giving sunbath is enough to get it cured. It was November 5th, Even though it is difficult and not good for a newborn to travel daily, we took her to hospital. Checked bilirubin level again, blood test again, a syringe full of blood again. We asked for doctors opinion about how effective is sunbath to cure baby's jaundice. He was like no no it wont work out, Come again next day. Its November 6th and we went to hospital again. It is the same procedure again. Taking blood from a newborn baby and finally told us jaundice is increasing if you want you can admit her and get photo therapy treatment or u can take her home and come again tomorrow for blood test. He told us there is some physiotherapist in marathalli, get the treatment for baby's hand deformity there since the hospital physiotherapist comes only weekly once. Is this the way a pediatrician treats a baby. We are new parents and we don't know what exactly has to be done and the doctor is so careless. Finally we decided to take a second opinion. We consulted Dr. Hanumanth Rao in fortis, which was the best decision for our baby. There were no jaundice meters, no blood tests. He told just give sunbath and meet me after a week. November 14th went to Dr. Hanumanth Rao again and jaundice is cured. He referred us a pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Vykunta Raju in Sagar Apollo. On November 20th we visited Dr. Vykunta Raju, he diagnosed the baby and told physiotherapy should be started immediately and referred Dr. Varija for physiotherapy. Once the physiotherapy treatment started baby started recovering day by day. Initially she could not even move her hand, it was in a paralyzed state. Now she is 5 month old and now she can hold toys, lift them, play with them, roll over. I sincerely thank Dr. Hanumanth Rao, Dr. Vykunta Raju and Dr. Varija for both medical support and moral support.
